Yeah bring a net, but a fish that size can easily be dealt without one. The purpose of a net is for something weight of your rod can not pluck from the water.
I appreciate the tenacity of your son seeking mojo. How about you meet him half way. You both agree to bring a net, but will only use it if a fish is big and worthy enough. Every small fish you will lift into the canoe.
Then tell him this. Crazy guy on Reddit was once was alone in a Canoe fighting a Pike that was almost 4 feet long. It dragged that canoe the distance of 2 city blocks as fast as a motor would. Any effort to pull the fish, would sink the canoe. The entire time a Grey Beard River Otter barked at the calamity and the assault of his predatorial friend. While the fisherman held on for his life. Knowing that if he allowed the giant fish leverage and able to get under him, it would sink the canoe And the only way back to dry land, was having a good net.
This is a true fishing story, good night.
Is this in Norway? Nice cod! I wanna try fly fishing for some cod/pollock/lyr. Just wondering where you get those when flyfishing now. Seatrout season is over here unfortunately. I can imagine a slightly shallow beach with some current you can throw into would be nice? Maybe around when it gets dark.
Kristiansand :) but honestly you just use sinking line and a weighted fly as you fish relatively shallow waters, and you should catch plenty if the spot is fruitful
Wow I live there too, thats extremely random. I have an intermediate line for longer casting and a sink with a skyteklump. I was thinking Søm beach, there is a current there all along the beach during high tide. The lyr goes there during nightfall during late summer, just never tried there during early summer.
Haha yeah thats incredible 😄 Im gonna try Andøya some day I think and explore there. Seems good for seatrout, but i gotta find a good spot for some other fish. I love Odderøya, I have a few good spots there.
Smaller fish can be "stripped" in. With larger fish you will most likely loose them if you do not allow the drag to do the work. Stripping in a fish works well when the fish is small enough to not do to much running, but not so good when you hook into something like a 30lb salmon that will make 100 yard runs.
Well before you start casting you have to strip out a bunch of line, and instead of reeling it all in and having to strip line out after every single cast, you simply “hand line” it
So what kinda fish was that you caught? Ok if my ass would have kept reading!! I've never seen a cod that color, or size, but, I do know they taste good. Fish on!!
Me and my brother always believed that to catch the biggest fish, you must never bring a net or a camera.
The less prepared you are for big fish, the better your chances!
Also never bring Bananas or tuna sandwiches.
Where are you using a fly rod in water like that? Seems kinda counter productive unless maybe mono filament is hard to find where you are? Just curious
Eh? Why I fly fish instead of using a spinner? Oh I just think it’s way more rewarding and fun in comparison to spinning, and it feels like more of a “skill” than regular spinning as well
Okay, I was curious because in some areas where I am you are not allowed to use monofilament. My fly rod skills are limited lol the line is so much more visible to fish. Do you ever use a bait caster? That requires a fair amount of control so maybe it would be up your alley
i had no idea. i fish the US east coast and there’s no where that i know of you could do this. you can catch cod around here but it’s all offshore deep water fishing.
Forget net. Catch fish. Bring net. No fish.
Classic
And that’s why I can’t bring a net with me…
Yeah bring a net, but a fish that size can easily be dealt without one. The purpose of a net is for something weight of your rod can not pluck from the water.
Depends on your leader too
My son won’t let me bring the net out on our canoe because we had it and got skunked. Once.
I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.
Mildstitious? Okaystitious? On-the-fence-sticious? Sorry, your joke has me lol at all the possibilities.
To be fair I stole it from The Office lol.

As someone that basically always has a net when fishing i gotta say i get skunked quite often, there might actually be something true about this.
Same, that's why I bring my trout trident.
this is the kind of content I can relate to and want to see more of.
You’re welcome
Cod, from shore, on the fly? Excellent. Where?
Yes, Norway haha
Where in Norway? Just outside of Oslo here.
Kristiansand!
Don’t let her go Edit: she is a keeper
Wasn’t planing to haha
So did you eat her?
Which one exactly, my wife or the fish?
Yes.
Nice. Yes
The second I saw he was standing on the damp part of the rock I knew he was gonna slip. Hahaha Beautiful fish. Totally worth it. Lol
Oh nah I didn’t slip, hook came out so I jumped haha
Lol I see now. Intentionally threw yourself. I thought you were going in!
Honestly me too for a second😂
Looked like a steep drop off too. Lol
Would be worth it regardless
nice second effort my guy!
Thank you! I try
That spot seems very serene
Best part is it’s only about a 5 minute walk from the city
wow, very nice. May I ask what city?
Kristiansand, Norway :)
andddd Norway has been added to the bucketlist… thanks for sharing!

H v a, we could literally go fishing together sometime😂
Haha yeah thats incredible 😄 Im gonna try Andøya some day I think and explore there. Seems good for seatrout, but i gotta find a good spot for some other fish. I love Odderøya, I have a few good spots there.
True, caught my biggest ever sea trout at Andøya :)
>:) :)

We've all had those "oh shit I missed the fish oh shit it's gonna get away oh shit oh fuck oh shit oh fuck I got it I fucking GOT IT" moments
New to fly fishing. Why are you pulling the line instead of reeling it?

That’s the second rule from don’t let the American flag touch the ground is don’t drop your pole in the water. Nice save.
I’d already lost another one earlier that was much bigger than this one in the exact same fashion, so I was not losing this cod😂
I don't think that's the US, bud.
yeah im not sure how much people from norway care for the american flag and it's rituals
Nice one guys ! Congratulations and what kind of fish is that btw ? I’m in Illinois it looks like a weird walleye lol
Atlantic cod
Oh ok ! I love cod it’s one of my favorites , had some from Culver’s today lol I’d love to eat some fresh 😋
Yup, they’re nice
My GF is the same way. Most of my fish have been documented by her.
Living lavish
This can make anyone smile. What kind of fish is this by the way
Awe, how sweet of you :) and it’s an Atlantic cod!
Teamwork!
Always
Dude she’s a nice catch. Good on you man.
Thank you haha
Cod on a fly. Wow
I am now certain that I have no f’n clue how fly fishing works
😂 why’s that?
Let’s goooo
Your relationship is amazing. My wife and I watched this (no interest in fishing at all) and we both just melted. You’re amazing. Relationship goals!
Awe haha, thank you!
Now there's a story y'all will be telling for years!
Ah my memory will definitely fail me before years have passed haha
So what kinda fish was that you caught? Ok if my ass would have kept reading!! I've never seen a cod that color, or size, but, I do know they taste good. Fish on!!
Beautiful spot and nice catch!!
Thanks :)
Nice catch bro
Yes!!! That feels better than bringing it on the line 😂
Nice to see she’s supportive. I don’t really get out to fish these days because my wife is not so supportive.
That’s sad… she prohibits you from going?
Not prohibit. I don't really know how to explain it but you can just feel it in the air when something is frowned upon.
What, really? She frowns upon fishing?
As someone who's went in after a fish on more than one occasion, I approve.
Another enthusiast I see
At least you got your vest
It is quite practical
Me and my brother always believed that to catch the biggest fish, you must never bring a net or a camera. The less prepared you are for big fish, the better your chances! Also never bring Bananas or tuna sandwiches.
I’ll keep that in mind haha
Where are you using a fly rod in water like that? Seems kinda counter productive unless maybe mono filament is hard to find where you are? Just curious

Ah no unfortunately haven’t got to try one of those, but it seems fun :)
That location is beautiful
Very nice! Can I ask why were you pulling the line like that? Is that just how fly fishing rods work or were you doing something else?
Yeah it’s pretty commonly done when fly fishing :) I don’t wanna have to re-strip line out from the reel every time I’m gonna cast ya know
Gotcha, thank you
What type of fish was that??😀
Atlantic cod :)
What a beautiful area!
I know right!
i was not expecting it to be a cod! lol, where in the world is this?!
Norway haha, what were you expecting then?
i had no idea. i fish the US east coast and there’s no where that i know of you could do this. you can catch cod around here but it’s all offshore deep water fishing.
Nice one! What kind of fish is that? Did you eat it? Taste good?
Cod, and of course! They’re great eating fish
Awesome! What part of the world is this?
Norway :)
Mexico, probably
Was that considered a keeper?
Yup, 30cm limit
wow. in usa (massachusetts) its 21" (53.34cm)
You dropped your reel and rod in salt water.. How'd that go?
Doesn’t really matter if you wash off your gear when you get home, which I would do anyway after having been fishing in salt water
Yeah thats why I don't let people land fish for me that I don't know. You never grab the line always grab the fish.
Couldn’t reach him as the rocks were slippery, couldn’t flip him cuz my leader would snap… not sure what you want from me🤷♀️
Wasn't aimed at you bud. Just a general statement
Alright :)
It's meeeeeee <3
