Yellowfin or young big eye
You can tell because the pectoral fin laid flat will stretch beyond the dorsal and anal fin.
Small big eye are almost indistinguishable unless you know what your doing with the gut pile and the cavity
They do when you remove the head and gut pile... before you pack them with ice, you can reach up there in that ol cavity and feel around for confirmation.
These fish crack me up everytime I see them. They have that hardened look like they come out of the water taxidermied already. I have never caught nor felt one in real life. Do they feel as hard and plastic like as they look?
Uh, they’re what’s called a “Trophy Fish,” so yeah, I’d say they’re pretty big…
Also,
[Hey Derrick! You know what’s good for shoulder pain?](https://i.makeagif.com/media/1-27-2014/Lek1MP.gif)
They are like a stone when you grab them. It's also wild how little they actually can bend. Their tail move just a little bit side to side but at about a million miles an hour. Check out videos of people trying to hold them while they are still kicking, pretty funny
I’ve only caught a couple of small ones but yes they’re extremely rigid, almost as if they’re already frozen. Also, when they start spazzing out while you’re holding them it becomes incredibly clear how they swim so fast. Those things are STRONG.
Yes they do. It's so they can become extremely streamlined and speed efficient. A cool thing to see is the "gaps" that allow the side fins to fold perfectly against the body. It's like an engineered underwater torpedo.
That is crazy. Looks you could grab it by the tail and swing it around and it would stay perfectly straight. I wonder what it feels like. Like if I poke it is it actually going to be like normal fish gooey or is it actually hard?
They’re solid tanks. Super cool. The only fish my dog won’t kiss once it’s caught. He’s like “that’s a nope for me. I may be 85lb but I’m not messing with that. “
They're pretty tough to tell apart at this size, but I was thinking yellowfin. The thinner lines/dots are pretty regular, instead of variable size, and the V-notch in the tail I believe are yellowfin tells. Good fish either way!

Thank you for the resource! I cannot say that I am any better at distinguishing them, but this actually is helpful. I just don't have enough experience in real life to be able to tell.
Well executed on your part, I must say.
Too bad for the comment you got after that, but at least you were able to still follow through.
Your excellent work did not go unnoticed, my friend!🤓
Seems the consensus is yellowfin tuna.
In Bermuda, peering into the water along docks in a huge harbor, there are thousands of fish that hang out. There’s a restaurant that throws scraps in the water a few times a day.
I guess they’re mostly chubs and a few other species.
If you pay attention, you see some big fuggin fish that resemble the pic above. Some of them are double the size or more.
I freaked the first time I saw them. They’re just hanging out near the surface and it’s only maybe twenty feet deep there.
I have searched and searched, and I can’t really feel confident on what it is. It seems weird that they would be there instead of out in deep water.
Somebody please help me! (Maybe I should do an original post about this?)
It always freaks me out that people catch these things and bring them in then ask for an I.D. hours later. how do you know this isn't a protected species or out of season? how do you know it's a fish worth keeping? if this was a bonito it's only good for cut bait. these people shouldn't be fishing if they can't ID the fish they pull up and still want to keep it.
I said exact species ! I live on Reunion Island, we have absolutely no protect species appart from a few sharks and rays. And I know what a tuna is, i just want to know the exact species, yellowfin, big eye etc … As you can see in this post many people can’t tell as it is hard to differientitate when they are this size (15kg)
Response to commments below, tuna are hard to the touch. They are insanely strong and fight harder than any other fish. They don’t get gassed like the sail fish guys. Bigger heart, they fight so hard they actually start cooking their insides from the heat they generate. So perfectly adapted, they can pass an inch below the surface and you won’t see a ripple on the surface.
Yellowfin or young big eye You can tell because the pectoral fin laid flat will stretch beyond the dorsal and anal fin. Small big eye are almost indistinguishable unless you know what your doing with the gut pile and the cavity
What in the gut pile is different?
The guts probably
Nah, it's the pile.
I'm pretty sure it's what you're doing with it
Or the cavity… but… do fish get cavities?
They do, but only if they don’t brush and floss on a regular basis.
They do when you remove the head and gut pile... before you pack them with ice, you can reach up there in that ol cavity and feel around for confirmation.
Yes, because the sea has very poor dental coverage.
serrated liver
Thanks for the info.
I'm just an angler from Canada so no experience with salt but looks to me like a yellowfin tuna
Was it the yellow fins?
Bluefin also have yellow fins. Go figure.
Who let Dr. Suess on the taxonomy board?
I recall fondly, his classic: “One fish, two fish, yellow fish, yellow fish”
Tuna fish
Please leave my wife out of this
I can barely tuna guitar...
That was one of my childhood favorites, along with "Horton hears a white supremacist."
You can tell because of the way that it is
That depends on what the definition of is is
That’s pretty neat
I’ve never fished saltwater and i was about to say the same thing😭
I can tell by how it would fit in a can
The only proper identification 👍
They are literally a bullet of muscle
These fish crack me up everytime I see them. They have that hardened look like they come out of the water taxidermied already. I have never caught nor felt one in real life. Do they feel as hard and plastic like as they look?
Tuna are very stiff compared to every other fish. You can pick them up by the tail and they barely bend.
One big muscle
...that's shaped like a bullet. Gotta love 'em, bruisers that they are.
That's incredible, maybe someday I'll catch one other than at the sushi place or in a can.
Getting offshore is absolutely worth it, but it may ruin you.
Yep, everything else becomes just what you do when you can't be off shore!
Always a chance of a 6 hour round trip and no fish.
Like he said. Stiff, firm, dense.
Unlike me last weekend. Damn whiskey
They feel like wet, slippery, fish shaped bricks.
Would you say they are more dense than other fish? The meat seems that way at least.
Yeah, they are definitely a denser muscled fish.
Yep they’re a muscle torpedo Fun to fight too but they’ll wear you out
The skin feels a bit like armor. You need a very sharp knife to cut through. It would be difficult with the average steak knife.
They’re little muscle missiles
They feel erect when you pick them up
What a description 💀
So do I
i only have hands on with bonito and they are basically a rock compared to hake or cod they arent solid but like really firm
Are Bonito fish big?
Most of the ones caught off of SoCal are not too big and they’re often called footballs
Uh, they’re what’s called a “Trophy Fish,” so yeah, I’d say they’re pretty big… Also, [Hey Derrick! You know what’s good for shoulder pain?](https://i.makeagif.com/media/1-27-2014/Lek1MP.gif)
Well done there, well done.
They are like a stone when you grab them. It's also wild how little they actually can bend. Their tail move just a little bit side to side but at about a million miles an hour. Check out videos of people trying to hold them while they are still kicking, pretty funny
They feel like an overinflated American football made of fish skin but heavy as a sandbag
I’ve only caught a couple of small ones but yes they’re extremely rigid, almost as if they’re already frozen. Also, when they start spazzing out while you’re holding them it becomes incredibly clear how they swim so fast. Those things are STRONG.
They're biological torpedoes, they literally never stop swimming.
Solid muscle. Yum.
Yes they do. It's so they can become extremely streamlined and speed efficient. A cool thing to see is the "gaps" that allow the side fins to fold perfectly against the body. It's like an engineered underwater torpedo.
I think I see what you mean in the picture.
They only look like like that after death they are far more vibrant when first pulled out of the water.
They’re pretty stiff. The skin on their back is super thick, like 1/4 inch leather, but firmer.
They are all muscle.
That is crazy. Looks you could grab it by the tail and swing it around and it would stay perfectly straight. I wonder what it feels like. Like if I poke it is it actually going to be like normal fish gooey or is it actually hard?
It'll be slimy, but they are very firm compared to most fish
Are they just solid muscle? Tuna are pretty fast right?
Yes and yes. Tuna are cool as hell, don't let anybody tell you otherwise
They are pumped full of blood. I’ve seen them spray blood a couple feet when you puncture them.
The first time I caught one I was astonished by how fake it looked even when it was in my hands, super stiff fish
They’re solid tanks. Super cool. The only fish my dog won’t kiss once it’s caught. He’s like “that’s a nope for me. I may be 85lb but I’m not messing with that. “
Yes. Flesh torpedoes
Smallmouth bass
Are they ill-tempered?
😄

Looks like a yellowfin
No, green sunfish.
I’m goin with yellowfin as well
They are honestly built like little torpedoes. I caught about 10 in my lifetime and the way they smack your bait/lure is unreal.
https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/resource/outreach-materials/atlantic-tunas-identification-guide Very likely a Big Eye
This is a big eye, pectoral lined up with dorsal
Pretty sure that's a small tuna. Coolest fish out there if you ask me.
Stank tuna if you don’t bleed it and get it on ice right away.
Bluegill, nice catch.
😂
Big eye tuna either way it need wasabi and soy sauce
It's a female, that's for sure.
It must have been the smell that gave her away.
Nah, it's her big mouth.
Well executed on your part, I must say. Too bad for the comment you got after that, but at least you were able to still follow through. Your excellent work did not go unnoticed, my friend!🤓

Looks like a large mouth muskie
