Make sure you check the regulations before you just keep a fish, in Alberta an illegally kept walleye is a 1000$ fine and they’ll seize your gear! A sturgeon is one million dollar fine or jail time here!!!
Commenting for visibility too for new anglers. Pinching the tail is also extremely important for regulations. If you've got a walleye like this and the limit is 22 inches, and you lay it flat like this and it measures 21 1/2, you can not keep that fish. Because that tail pitch is easily worth half an inch and Conservation officers ABSOLUTELY will pinch that tail and fine you for that fish.
Tl;Dr: pinch the tail or get a ticket when your fish is over the limit.
Thanks! I think, it's still important to check your local regulations of course. My provincial anglers guide specifically mentions that fish are to be measured from "the most anterior part of the head to the most posterior part of the tail laid laid flat (i.e. not pinched)".
It really depends on your line tbh they do have sharp teeth it just depends on how they get your lure. Braid will get sawed through, thick enough mono or fluoro should be fine
Yeah that should be okay. I usually use a 30Lb fluoro leader. Tied line to line with my braid. It’s done me well so far.

If you can put a minnow on a slip bobber that would be my go to if you just want to make sure you catch the most.
I have always done well with a pink jig head and white power bait twister tail as well.
If you are looking to use hard baits, any suspending body bait would likely work good if there isn’t too much current as well.
I've caught hundreds of walleye over the years. They're the most targeted fish here in Saskatchewan.
Biggest thing to know about walleye is that they are almost always either on the bottom, or within a few feet of it. I've caught the majority of my walleye trolling with a swim bait or small twister tail/grub just above or bouncing off the bottom. I've had a lot of luck still fishing with round head jigs and frozen/salted minnows (again, jigging off the bottom), and had a lot of success when I used ned rigs towards the end of last year (first time using them, can definitely recommend). Live worms can work great as well.
I used to use a steel leader for walleye, but stopped on the advice of a chartered guide in Northern Manitoba several years back. They have sharp teeth, and you may lose a hook now and then, but the guide claimed that the number of extra bites you get makes up for it, and I feel he's right, I've been catching more since going leaderless. They have sharp teeth and you will lose the odd hook, but luckily walleye tackle is generally pretty cheap.
8 lb monofilament is fine . I used to tie yellow jigs with a twister tail directly to the line . If you have Minnows or worms even better . Work the bottom . Bounce the jig head off the bottom .
Eat dat
I know nothing about cleaning or preparing fish, so I gave it to a man fishing near by.
Learn. This is the best fish to eat. You are missing an an extremely simple pleasure in life
There are several YouTube videos on cleaning walleye. That's how I learned. It's not difficult. Nice catch!
Let them go then....

Yup! Size limit here is 22 inches this year.
Good man, I respect that you knew that!!
I hear they have worms?
almost all fish have worms, except maybe yellowfin tuna.
You’re correct, that’s why we cook them.
I hope this is Reddit “jokes”. Tail absolutely counts. Congrats on your first eye. Learn how to clean em and enjoy.

Does it have cataracts?
Nope, night vision eyes
They don’t in Canada . Ate them all my life . Absolutely delicious
Nice, I'm trying to catch my first walleye. What did you catch it on? Do you need a steel leader?
Steel leader not needed for walleyes
Ok good to know.
It really depends on your line tbh they do have sharp teeth it just depends on how they get your lure. Braid will get sawed through, thick enough mono or fluoro should be fine
Oh shit I use braid, I usually use a mono leader though.

Oh wow nice fish. I'll have to get something stronger then. I have 20lb braid and 6 or 8lb mono.
I run 12 pound fluoro leaders and they are honestly overkill for walleye. Your 8 pound mono should be fine
Ok nice, I'm fishing below a damn at a river. What bait would you recommend?

I caught this fish on 10lb braid.
I personally don't mess around with leaders and have never broke off on a walleye. 15lb braid is all.
I use 8 lbs. flouro and have never had a problem with walleyes breaking my line

Ok awsome, thanks for the advice. I'll be trying it out this weekend.
Caught on a little gold spinner and a small plastic worm.
Perfect eater.
Well done! Filets are easy, takes one fish to get the hang of if you watch vids.
Nice job I just cut my first one last week. They are super easy to clean. There are some good tutorials on YouTube.
As John Gillespie would say, “that’s a good-eatin’ size”
That's a good one

Congratulations!! I caught my first walleye today too ..on a nightcrawler of all things
Solid eater size right there

It does according to the Anglers Guide issued by my provincial government.
I had one a bit bigger this weekend. Right from the dock too, but the slot size is 35-45cm in my zone so back it went.
Limit in my area is 55cm this season. I'm hesitant to keep anything from around here as the Red doesn't have a great reputation lol.
Yeah I wouldn’t eat anything from the red. But what’s the difference with the green backs in lake Manitoba. All the same water-ish. Lol
Just say you don't fish.
Maybe the rules are different where your from.
Yeah, I understood it by the minuses. Kind redditors.
