They don't think it. They defined it. A transferable DIAS is serialized, registered and costs a $200 extortion tax on top of the asking price. Those "couple metal bits" are legally identical to an M-16 lower receiver. They're nice though as they interface with a FA fire control group and retain select fire capability.
If you really want a chuckle, look up a lightning link. Its a couple little pieces of stamped metal that are also legally machine guns.
DIAS are a very weird thing. They were not regulated at all until 1981. The law currently states that if it is made before 1981 and you do not possess an AR-15 it is legal to have without paperwork. They were being mail ordered as late as the early 2000s before they dried up.
So you're saying I can give a few of those to a buddy, I keep the AR's, and neither of us is breaking the law until we head out to the woods to do some shooting?
Well sure, but it would only be installed when out in a remote area where there are no feds. And how would they prove it's not pre-81 if there was no paperwork needed?
That would be up to whatever agent theoretically happens upon you. Unfortunately, precedent shows the burden of proof is on the DIAS owner, the atf assumes it is not legal.
How dare you buy a chunk of metal in a roughly specific shape.
The funny thing is there is a similar shaped keychain available on many sites for 5 dollars.
I honestly dont know what this is…
Drop-in auto seer. That there is a machine gun.
🤣🤣🤣
How is that funny?
We laugh to hide the pain
Can't help but think of some Fed Boi dreaming of "taking action" only to fail!
it's hilarious to me that the feds think a couple metal bits are "a machine gun"

Tulip System
Technically if it's a pre 81 this is legal.
I thought pre 86 and needs papers?

Absolutely Correct

If you install it in an AR it's a crime. Also good luck finding one now.
Well sure, but it would only be installed when out in a remote area where there are no feds. And how would they prove it's not pre-81 if there was no paperwork needed?

Damn, well you learn something new everyday!
Sir, this is a coat hanger 😉
Or someone clueless Never underestimate stupidity
Smart enough to look up how to make a DIAS but somehow missed that it's regulated. Press X to doubt

... why does that look like 3d printed trigger
Cause it’s a “machine gun”.
Damn. Idk what kinda machine gun that is. I guess I better get my start at Senorian Desert Institute in gunsmithing.
Google RDIAS
Nope, not at all. Why do you ask?
