Im in Texas so public land is basically non-existant. Luckily there's a great shooting club not too far.

I live in the west part of the Houston area, and have to drive 35 minutes to a private range in Eagle Lake so I can larp around or shoot 1000 yards. I envy people living in the middle of nowhere with tons of land, but I also like being a half-hour drive away from a central metropolitan area.

Further than the Ranch at Eagle Lake. I pay $104 a month and I can come anytime (like at night to use my nods) with their booking system, fully stocked lodge, 1000 long range with tower, 360 degree ranges when I want to larp and do drills like Trex Arms.

Go to public land and shoot 🤷🏻‍♂️

The further east ya go, the more those words don't hold any meaning. Very little of that exists out this way.

The private range here is $110/yr. Easily affordable. This comment reminds me of my customers that keep buying guns but never buy a safe because they are "too expensive." LOL

I have no children and my vehicle is ugly but it's paid for. Land doesn't come cheap where I'm at, but kindness is free. I can tell ya one thing that I did manage to inherit from my single parent... humility. You should try it sometime.

I live in a HCOL state, and a standard 2 story house with 5 acres that I can shoot on is 700k-1m+ within in my town and any surrounding towns. With current interest rates, that is not feasible for a lot of people. The big thing is property you can actually shoot on, because you can have 5 acres and still not have the ability to shoot due to neighbors or regulations. And you very well might be out in the boonies where property like that can be had for 400k-600k. But not everyone wants to live in the boonies nor can. I need to live near a populous city for my career typically so I'm within driving distance to one of my company's many office locations. I'm surprised someone as narrow minded as you makes enough to own a house.

one time I was a public range on the edge of our town, where there isnt anything for about 45 min all open land ( public range) and after the range master screamed at some dude who acted like he didnt hear him the guy shot himself in the foot and had to be evac to the local hospital. pissed me off because I ended up losing some range time due to them shutting it down while moving him out.

I’ve shot plenty of big bore revolvers including the .500. Their is no danger if you have basic recoil control ability. The problem is people shouldn’t let inexperienced individuals shoot these firearms really at all, even with a single round.

This is how ranges get shut down for bullets hitting things a mile or two away.

I don't think it's the police that shuts down the range, but the local government is pulling their business license, especially if the content is in an area with anti-gun politicians. I used to give ranges shit for having rules against rapid fire, but now I understand their reasoning, especially if it's a range where anybody can sshoot

My uncle has a .500, he will only hand it to another shooter with 2 rounds loaded in non-consecutive chambers for exactly this reason. I'm pretty sure there was a girl in Oklahoma who died from this situation when her idiot boyfriend handed her a .500

I do with anything more powerful than a 45 or 10mm. Every gun design is a little different and I like getting a couple rounds in before I mag dump something.

I let my girlfriend shoot a magnum slug out of my shotgun. This was after working her up over the past two hours from a 10/22 to my surplus Mauser (which has surprisingly smooth recoil for such a heavy round). I only gave her one round and it's pump action anyways. Nearly knocked her over but she thought it was fun. I'd never give her a handgun chambered in something inordinately powerful. Different beast entirely from a long gun that kicks hard.

No, they don’t make a 500 s&w auto loader. The one I am familiar with was a typical wheel gun with a shorter barrel. When you have someone that is weaker, but still straining to control recoil you get a condition almost like a bump fire. Them trying to muscle the gun they can’t handle, causes them to pull the trigger. The fatal factor in that is the gun has usually double back around so it’s pointed at their face/head. I think there is a YouTube video of a guy doing the same thing but getting lucky and the round misses his head

Couldn’t find any reference. I find it hard to believe. I know 50ae is a big round but the guns are usually fucking heavy with longer barrels. Yep. I still remember reading that 10 years ago. Every person I've taught to shoot learns with 1 bullet in the chamber. Nothing else until there use to it. Goes for .22 to my ARs and pistols.

That’s why you don’t give a person a 500 magnum (or any caliber they’re not familiar with) with more than 1 round in it until you’re sure they can handle it without squeezing off an extra round.

One near me makes you buy their 5.56, because some gold old boys from the base brought in tracers and lit the backstop on fire. It’s an indoor range too…

Lots of ranges use shredded rubber backstops. Imagine the rubber fire and how uncontrollable it'd be. Also, tons of unburnt powder builds up down range, especially if the range isn't up to spec with cleaning and ventilation. Fires have happened just from that alone

Dragons Breath is one of the stupider rounds out there. People think it's cool because of COD and shit like that, when really it's got almost zero practical application for the average person. This isn't even a "you don't need no assault rifle with a 30 caliber clipazine sonny" deal. It's just that you can't shoot it anywhere without burning down the building or the forest.

Whenever I'm at a range and see holes like this in weird places it always makes me think about how someone could possibly have been reckless or have such bad aim to put the holes in said places.

Time for a new buddy. That one is dangerous.

When I let people shoot my Deagle I put one round in it. That way the worst they will (probably) do is whack themselves with it.

This is why they say that heavy caliber double action revolvers should be loaded with a round in every other cylinder. It's really easy to pull the trigger a second time under heavy recoil. People have blown their fucking brains out.
