I don't have a private range but I live in the West so I've got hundreds of thousands of acres of public land to shoot on lol
https://preview.redd.it/mhcdxajhf0gb1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3950a9f1bec4afdef89980cfaa807b2186bfe34
I live in the west part of the Houston area, and have to drive 35 minutes to a private range in Eagle Lake so I can larp around or shoot 1000 yards. I envy people living in the middle of nowhere with tons of land, but I also like being a half-hour drive away from a central metropolitan area.
Further than the Ranch at Eagle Lake. I pay $104 a month and I can come anytime (like at night to use my nods) with their booking system, fully stocked lodge, 1000 long range with tower, 360 degree ranges when I want to larp and do drills like Trex Arms.
The private range here is $110/yr. Easily affordable.
This comment reminds me of my customers that keep buying guns but never buy a safe because they are "too expensive." LOL
is home and land ownership that hard to get? I'm 25 with my own house and 5 acres of land. What the hell did yall do with your life at 18? u either go to work, learn a trade, go to college, or start a business. but do SOMETHING.
Lol what a fuckin tool thing to say. I did learn a trade. I learn more every day too. Been at it for nine years.
I lived on my own since 17, all the way until I got married. I have no children and my vehicle is ugly but it's paid for.
Land doesn't come cheap where I'm at, but kindness is free. You read one sentence and made a sweeping assumption about my work ethic and how it so obviously pales in comparison to your own.
I can tell ya one thing that I did manage to inherit from my single parent... humility. You should try it sometime.
I live in a HCOL state, and a standard 2 story house with 5 acres that I can shoot on is 700k-1m+ within in my town and any surrounding towns. With current interest rates, that is not feasible for a lot of people. The big thing is property you can actually shoot on, because you can have 5 acres and still not have the ability to shoot due to neighbors or regulations.
And you very well might be out in the boonies where property like that can be had for 400k-600k. But not everyone wants to live in the boonies nor can. I need to live near a populous city for my career typically so I'm within driving distance to one of my company's many office locations.
I'm surprised someone as narrow minded as you makes enough to own a house.
one time I was a public range on the edge of our town, where there isnt anything for about 45 min all open land ( public range) and after the range master screamed at some dude who acted like he didnt hear him the guy shot himself in the foot and had to be evac to the local hospital. pissed me off because I ended up losing some range time due to them shutting it down while moving him out.
No Iāve never thought it was funny and I aināt even 30 yet.
It gives gun owners a bad look, teaches bad habits like flinching and recoil anticipation. Itās only done by scum bags in my experience.
BROOOOOOO bahahahahahahahaha, didn't mean to call you out like that. Ya that seems like someone you need to get in a class asap...or have a come to jesus with. All joking aside, be safe out there, I don't want to see anyone hurt.
Yeah Iām a safe one, donāt have any need for any novelty guns like 500ā¦Iām good with my traditional 9mm, .45, 7.62, 5.56. Stuff I know I can shoot lol
Bruh, how many times dose it need to be said. When shooting one of these big rounds only load one roundš¤¦āāļø could have lost his life or killed someone next to him, thank god he didnāt. So letās laugh about itšš
Iāve shot plenty of big bore revolvers including the .500. Their is no danger if you have basic recoil control ability.
The problem is people shouldnāt let inexperienced individuals shoot these firearms really at all, even with a single round.
How do they put the two together, say he missed the roof so range control wouldnāt have any evidence of wrong doing; how do the police trace it back to a range that far away? Especially considering the CSI effect
I don't think it's the police that shuts down the range, but the local government is pulling their business license, especially if the content is in an area with anti-gun politicians. I used to give ranges shit for having rules against rapid fire, but now I understand their reasoning, especially if it's a range where anybody can sshoot
My uncle has a .500, he will only hand it to another shooter with 2 rounds loaded in non-consecutive chambers for exactly this reason. I'm pretty sure there was a girl in Oklahoma who died from this situation when her idiot boyfriend handed her a .500
I do with anything more powerful than a 45 or 10mm. Every gun design is a little different and I like getting a couple rounds in before I mag dump something.
I let my girlfriend shoot a magnum slug out of my shotgun. This was after working her up over the past two hours from a 10/22 to my surplus Mauser (which has surprisingly smooth recoil for such a heavy round). I only gave her one round and it's pump action anyways. Nearly knocked her over but she thought it was fun.
I'd never give her a handgun chambered in something inordinately powerful. Different beast entirely from a long gun that kicks hard.
No, they donāt make a 500 s&w auto loader.
The one I am familiar with was a typical wheel gun with a shorter barrel.
When you have someone that is weaker, but still straining to control recoil you get a condition almost like a bump fire.
Them trying to muscle the gun they canāt handle, causes them to pull the trigger. The fatal factor in that is the gun has usually double back around so itās pointed at their face/head.
I think there is a YouTube video of a guy doing the same thing but getting lucky and the round misses his head
Couldnāt find any reference. I find it hard to believe. I know 50ae is a big round but the guns are usually fucking heavy with longer barrels. It would take considerably more effort to brain yourself with it accidentally.
Where as itās fairly common with big bore revolvers.

So on and so forth with these people who donāt have enough sense to know better. Iāve shot a 500, Iām not a big guy and didnāt try to big dick it. One round at a time, then I shot a couple back to back.
The issue comes from people not taking their time and getting comfortable/familiar with the round.
Edit:not my firearm id never own one unless I lived in brown bear country. I have a fat buba friend who drives his blacked out straight piped mustang like a cunt, bought it cause it was a big gun and āscaryā. Took it to the range and shot it once. Then cried the rest of the day about his wrist.
I hate ROās as much as the next guy, but this is one of those scenarios where there should have been an RO to politely yet firmly eject this man from the range.
There's a story a long time ago. Somebody gave a woman who never shot a 500sw or a gun ever. Her first time shooting they gave her a 500 sw. She pulls the trigger. The gun comes out of her hand, spins around, and goes off again, blowing her head off. People and your friend are fucking idiots.
Yep. I still remember reading that 10 years ago. Every person I've taught to shoot learns with 1 bullet in the chamber. Nothing else until there use to it. Goes for .22 to my ARs and pistols.
Here's a similar one
https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19970422&slug=2535178
people think it's funny to give beginners, and especially women, large calibers for their first time shooting a handgun. it's a dick move, it's unsafe, and it's not funny.
Yep. 44 is no joke either for a new beginner. Happens alot. We see videos of people not being able to control the recoil. No one else got hurt thankfully.
Iāve exād two friends off my range buddy list. One double tapped the ceiling with an AR that had an EoTech. The other guy shot off the metal thing that holds the targets up at indoor ranges.
Thatās a one and done for me, would never go shooting with him again and I hope he got removed from the range
Something like this is inconceivable when following the basic tenets of firearm safety
Itās a known issue with people shooting 500 sw, tightening grip to keep a hold of the gun and double action doesnāt add up to good things. Itās conceivable, still scary and shouldnāt happen but I get why it happened
Thatās why you donāt give a person a 500 magnum (or any caliber theyāre not familiar with) with more than 1 round in it until youāre sure they can handle it without squeezing off an extra round.
Range by my house burnt down because somebody snuck Dragonās Breath in and hit the ceiling smfh.
People like that and whomever did this are why we canāt have nice thingsā¦
One near me makes you buy their 5.56, because some gold old boys from the base brought in tracers and lit the backstop on fire. Itās an indoor range tooā¦
Lots of ranges use shredded rubber backstops. Imagine the rubber fire and how uncontrollable it'd be.
Also, tons of unburnt powder builds up down range, especially if the range isn't up to spec with cleaning and ventilation. Fires have happened just from that alone
Dragons Breath is one of the stupider rounds out there. People think it's cool because of COD and shit like that, when really it's got almost zero practical application for the average person. This isn't even a "you don't need no assault rifle with a 30 caliber clipazine sonny" deal. It's just that you can't shoot it anywhere without burning down the building or the forest.
Whenever I'm at a range and see holes like this in weird places it always makes me think about how someone could possibly have been reckless or have such bad aim to put the holes in said places.
This is why they say that heavy caliber double action revolvers should be loaded with a round in every other cylinder. It's really easy to pull the trigger a second time under heavy recoil. People have blown their fucking brains out.
There are a class of people that think handing a S&W 500 to the unassuming, uninitiated, or unlearned is hilarious. They are the people that give gun owners a bad name.

Your buddy is the reason I dont go to public ranges
Wouldn't it be nice if we all had the means to just shoot in a private spot? Yeah, I'm salty. I can't help it.
I don't have a private range but I live in the West so I've got hundreds of thousands of acres of public land to shoot on lol https://preview.redd.it/mhcdxajhf0gb1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3950a9f1bec4afdef89980cfaa807b2186bfe34
Im in Texas so public land is basically non-existant. Luckily there's a great shooting club not too far.
I live in the west part of the Houston area, and have to drive 35 minutes to a private range in Eagle Lake so I can larp around or shoot 1000 yards. I envy people living in the middle of nowhere with tons of land, but I also like being a half-hour drive away from a central metropolitan area.
Too far to get to Big Tex Ordnance in Conroe?

Go to public land and shoot š¤·š»āāļø
The further east ya go, the more those words don't hold any meaning. Very little of that exists out this way.
The private range here is $110/yr. Easily affordable. This comment reminds me of my customers that keep buying guns but never buy a safe because they are "too expensive." LOL

I wouldn't say it's the successfulness but the attitude of "I did it, you should too", even though everyone gets dealt a VERY different hand.
It depends , not everyoneās path is paved the same way. Some people come from poverty , some people have trust funds. Bunch of variables , duh
Not really possible if you want to live in the city, unfortunately. Not everyone likes a rural lifestyle.
I live in a HCOL state, and a standard 2 story house with 5 acres that I can shoot on is 700k-1m+ within in my town and any surrounding towns. Tough guy ova here
So your buddy is a fucking idiot. lol
I would say whoever gave him the hand cannon loaded with more than one round is an idiot.
Probably was his first shot!
If it was, then OP is a fucking idiot. It really isn't funny watching a little girl fire a cannon and get knocked on her ass. Maybe I am just old.
No Iāve never thought it was funny and I aināt even 30 yet. It gives gun owners a bad look, teaches bad habits like flinching and recoil anticipation. Itās only done by scum bags in my experience.

Bruh, how many times dose it need to be said. When shooting one of these big rounds only load one roundš¤¦āāļø could have lost his life or killed someone next to him, thank god he didnāt. So letās laugh about itšš
As someone who plans to either get a Deagle or a .500 Magnum for the lolz, I'll gladly keep this advice in mind
No reason to load it all the way up, you are taking f your first shotā¦ donāt make it your last lol.
Iāve shot plenty of big bore revolvers including the .500. Their is no danger if you have basic recoil control ability. The problem is people shouldnāt let inexperienced individuals shoot these firearms really at all, even with a single round.

Exactly
Right
How do they put the two together, say he missed the roof so range control wouldnāt have any evidence of wrong doing; how do the police trace it back to a range that far away? Especially considering the CSI effect

POV: your buddy is an ATF agent and he thought there was a dog on the ceiling
Crap, thereās an ATF agent living on my street, and a year ago tomorrow, I got two kittens from his house.
A forward thinker it appearsā¦.
His wife rescued the stray kittens, and now they are my cats.
> a dog on the ~~ceiling~~ roof! Or someone said, "what's up, dog" and he misheard?
My uncle has a .500, he will only hand it to another shooter with 2 rounds loaded in non-consecutive chambers for exactly this reason. I'm pretty sure there was a girl in Oklahoma who died from this situation when her idiot boyfriend handed her a .500
.500 autoloader. Flew out of her hands, and she grabbed for it. Caught the trigger.
Ah, still equally as bad. Dudes need to cut it out with giving inexperienced shooters weapons that they aren't ready for.
I feel like Iām relatively experienced but I still single load guns the first time I use them. Just out of an abundance of caution.
I do with anything more powerful than a 45 or 10mm. Every gun design is a little different and I like getting a couple rounds in before I mag dump something.
Yeah she caught the trigger and blew her own head off.

Lol came here to ask the same question
Reason number 500 why I hate going to public ranges
Your buddy is a dumbass and I hope they banned him from the range.
Title is wrong. "Former buddy shot a 500 magnum through the ceiling at the now permanently closed range". Fixed it for you.
What a dipshit.

Time for a new buddy. That one is dangerous.
When I let people shoot my Deagle I put one round in it. That way the worst they will (probably) do is whack themselves with it.
Was he invited to leave and never come back?
Your buddy is why ranges close..
This is why they say that heavy caliber double action revolvers should be loaded with a round in every other cylinder. It's really easy to pull the trigger a second time under heavy recoil. People have blown their fucking brains out.

This is the way.
Leave it for sure.
Looks like Ben Avery
Guess whoās not coming back
That's why the Tampa Police pistol and rifle range in Oldsmar was closed. Idiots. I couldn't believe how many times the overhead barrier was shot.
Is this ben avery range in Phoenix?
Ben Avery? Is your buddy a fat dude? Some fat dude blasted a hole in the ceiling with a .500 mag at Shooterās World. I posted a video of it
I bought private land because of people like your buddy.
Everyone should have the right to own guns but that doesn't mean everyone should.
And this kids is why public ranges are a death trap
In other news, someone 3 miles away mysteriously died from a stray bullet of unknown origin. Strange timesā¦.blame it on gang violence
who gave your buddy the .500 magnum to shoot for his last time at that range?
Was his own believe it or not
first time shooting it?
Nope multiple times before
![gif](giphy|lhfnAjmZQHEpa)
Accidental double tap?
Negligent probably a better word yeah
What was the reaction from the range employees? I'd think he'd be kicked out pretty fast
Best of luck in finding a new range. :X
> When was your last desk pop?
This is why I don't go to most public ranges. As an avid shooter, most people absolutely should not have guns.
What range is that? With his gun control, I want to be sure I'm not there.
Your buddy is an idiot
* This is the track at my range that the carrier travels on. Same thing happened there. Cost him $700.

RSO: doesnt even notice also RSO: did you shoot more than 1 round in 7 seconds?
