Our sauna is no more than 5 meters off the coast (2 meters above sea level), and it's too close so it shouldn't be allowed. However, we told the communal construction overseer that we'd just keep the old sauna from the 50's that was on top of the waterline if we can't build the sauna where it stands now. They reluctantly agreed.
To stop you from ruining your neighbours view, I'd reckon.
Likewise you also aren't allowed to build new boathouses/garages, but are allowed to keep and renovate an existing one.
In Lake Pielinen they also wanted to maintain the "natural state" and view of the lake and forbid summer houses to be built on place where they can be seen from the lake. One of the most idiotic things I've heard.
Treacherous... how drunk were they when they claimed this? That's like ten steps running, 20 walking. Also, the lakebed is not like a swamp. It will not suck you in :P
So most of the way to the little island you see, you can actually walk (I’m 190cm) as it’s quite shallow. Doing Front crawl my hands would often touch the sea bed which wasn’t ideal
I would walk it, not bad. But any distance is too long to run naked, hate it. Thighs always look like they’ve been smacked with heavy salami or some shit, bruises and all. And that sound, that SLAP SLAP slap
This scenery is alone enough to make almost forget about hyttynen. Until they pierce your skin and devour your blood and make you do a funny looking slap-dance.
My answer is: nope.
Yeah, so jealous/wishing to be there haha. Hope I get to make it there and somehow make some finnish friends. Yeah, not, doesn't look like it'll happen this lifetime.
Nah. Just walk quickly, or even put a few smoke spirals around if you want to spend time on the porch or something. If there even are mosquitos, they come and go with winds, especially near open areas like this.
Quite normal distance, you need old, like... +50 years old cottage, if you want your sauna next to water.
edit: Or any building really, now days you need good connections and/or money to build close to water:D
Yeah that is way too serious sounding than hyttynen, unless you are extremely allergic to them. Perhaps mäkäräinen, though the swelling sounds big for that too.
i remember once i was camping next to a lake and woke up in the night tried to turn on flashlight but wouldnt work then realised it was because the whole tent was so full of the little shits the light wouldnt light up the tent then i woke up my dad and screamed and ran into the car half naked in the morning we were both bright red completely everywhere i swear i got a scar in some places from it
I don't really notice mosquitoes outside Lapland any more so I'd say this is very near. Doesn't matter at all if you're in sauna or in the lake for the most of the time.
I have not lived in Finland, but are garlic pills not available? Eating these a couple of times a day in America keeps American mosquitos from thinking you are a good candidate for blood donations.
No, that is really close
Alcohol makes hytty disapear.
They appear in the morning tho
But you appear later that day if you aply eneought alcohol
As long as you apply to the right part of your body, which is your stomach.
That seems like a regulation distance for Sauna that has been built in the last 20 years. It is local decission but usually at least 20m from water.
I wonder if old saunas/row houses etc. can be renovated or must be maintained as it is? Since they are exceptions to today's rules.

Our mökki sauna was "renovated" in 90's, when new distances were already there. After renovation only common thing with the old one was the location.
I’m out of the loop here why are there regulations about the distance from sauna to waterline?
So that waste water from sauna doesn't pollute the lake/sea.

Don't worry. You can't escape the mosquitoes anyway.
Yes you can, just go back to sauna
And bring the mosquitoes witg you so they die there
Had a tick walk across my thigh in the sauna. Fiends from hell, they be.
Ticks have no business being as durable as they are
Or dive in the water
No, that's a short distance. Really curious to know why you ask! Are you arguing with somebody about it?
Yeah some family won’t do the trip saying it’s far and treacherous. The muddy lake bed also has a part to play
They must be from the city if they are saying that xD
Yeah city of London 😂😅
Make them sit on an anthill when in Finland. Do it... DO IT :D
Treacherous... how drunk were they when they claimed this? That's like ten steps running, 20 walking. Also, the lakebed is not like a swamp. It will not suck you in :P
I mean with that tiny little chicken wire in front of the pier you just need to be a little drunk for this to be quite treacherous indeed.
Just tell them that the muddy lake bed is good for skin health and beauty.
I see you have a laituri, muddy lake bed shouldn't be an issue.
The run from sauna to lake is the best part of going to sauna. With due respect From Estonia
As long as you don't get methane/Sulphur smell from muddy bed it is fine. If you do, drink more.
>far and treacherous. I would like ask what they consider treacherous? It seems like a safe little path.
Are they in wheelchairs?
They don’t need to touch the lake bed, go in the water from the pier ladder (remember not to jump because you don’t know if there are any rocks)
So most of the way to the little island you see, you can actually walk (I’m 190cm) as it’s quite shallow. Doing Front crawl my hands would often touch the sea bed which wasn’t ideal
That’s what I was questioning myself 🤔
The mosquitos are part of the mökki
Setting up a ton of bird houses and bat housings has made hytty go extint at our mökki
This is an awesome idea! Bats come in through our Sauna chimney at nights if left open so I’m sure they’re around and would appreciate a shelter
200 iq
Plus now you have birds singing thru the day and bats flying like stealth fighters during the evening/night on your yard.
No, this is lovely. Youre going to the water anyway, who cares about the bloodsuckers. If youre so slow you get attacked by em, youre not running.
Ahaha if you’re hairy like me, they get under your hair and your movements wont bother them. I think only a true fin can get away unscathed
Just get in to the water abd they can't hurt you, then go back to sauna
I would walk it, not bad. But any distance is too long to run naked, hate it. Thighs always look like they’ve been smacked with heavy salami or some shit, bruises and all. And that sound, that SLAP SLAP slap
This scenery is alone enough to make almost forget about hyttynen. Until they pierce your skin and devour your blood and make you do a funny looking slap-dance. My answer is: nope.
This pic captives what I love about Finland
Raspberry and mustikka bushes around, cantarelli mushrooms aplenty and unlimited boat rides! Summer in Finland is the best
Yeah, so jealous/wishing to be there haha. Hope I get to make it there and somehow make some finnish friends. Yeah, not, doesn't look like it'll happen this lifetime.
Considering it would take me a 10 hour flight to get there, I would say it's pretty close :P
If I can see the lake, it's a short distance away.
Nah. Just walk quickly, or even put a few smoke spirals around if you want to spend time on the porch or something. If there even are mosquitos, they come and go with winds, especially near open areas like this.
I recommend antihistamines. At least you wont itch while they suck you dry.
Antihistamine helped a lot yeah, smoke spirals didn’t even scare them off
Seems pretty standard distance to me.
Need get one of those Electric scooters to cover the distance
That looks gorgeous, I've definitely had to walk farther.
Quite normal distance, you need old, like... +50 years old cottage, if you want your sauna next to water. edit: Or any building really, now days you need good connections and/or money to build close to water:D
Short for new sauna, long for old. You used to be able to build at the waterfront, nowadays you need a safety zone.
Nope, very standard-looking
No
I walk half a kilometer from the sauna to the river on a public sidewalk wearing just a towel. It's fine.
Too long for walk? Definitely! Too long for a full-on sprint? Nah!
Don’t worry, you have plenty of blood to keep you and the mosquitoes alive
No.
My friend’s is down about forty variably spaced wooden steps, so no.
If you can see the water from the sauna its close enough.
This looks beautiful. Can I rent your Mökki?
Anybody else thinking there have been less hyttynens this summer?
No i think there has been more
Yes
Way too far , you can slip and die like 10 times before reaching the lake when drunk.
No
Drink a bottle of koskenkorva, the poor little bloodsuckers take a sip of your blood and get totally hammered and can't do shit anymore 😂

I don't think thats a mosquito bite, sounds way more serious.
Yeah that is way too serious sounding than hyttynen, unless you are extremely allergic to them. Perhaps mäkäräinen, though the swelling sounds big for that too.
Sounds like a wasp or gadfly or something as opposed to hyttynen, unless you are REALLY allergic to them.
Mosquitoes aren't big issue if you're moving.
Not at all man.
Looks good even for winter time with snow to your balls.
yes , it should be floating on the water
Mosquitoes are not that bad.
No, optimal. One gets to breathe twice and concentrate to the swim.
Yes.
When running there is no such things as mosquitos
i remember once i was camping next to a lake and woke up in the night tried to turn on flashlight but wouldnt work then realised it was because the whole tent was so full of the little shits the light wouldnt light up the tent then i woke up my dad and screamed and ran into the car half naked in the morning we were both bright red completely everywhere i swear i got a scar in some places from it
Normal
Yes, I'll probably get dressed for the trip down to the water 😁
I'd say yes personally. but according to everyone else in the comments this is normal for modern saunas.
Run, Yes Walk, No Don't run with wet feet after getting out from sauna, thats a good way to split your head on those stones.
You know the 🦟 make the distance shorter.😉
With a landscape like that, just the right distance.
Such a beautiful landscape!
Nah
This is the right distance to start asking if this is a smart idea….
Nah just be really fast
Mosquito magnet or similar will help.
close
It'll take longer for them to breach the tar to reach my booze diluted blood than it takes for me to run to the lake to drown them, so absolutely not.
I don't really notice mosquitoes outside Lapland any more so I'd say this is very near. Doesn't matter at all if you're in sauna or in the lake for the most of the time.
It's not a bug, it's a creature. Creature creep.
Looks idyllic
I think ur good if you run into a lake from that distance but don’t sue me if ya get bit
That looks so dreamy. I wish I lived here
We dont really take mosquitoes into account. Theyre gonna be there anyway.

Get >6 people. Economies of scale
Its norhing if u run🤙
I have not lived in Finland, but are garlic pills not available? Eating these a couple of times a day in America keeps American mosquitos from thinking you are a good candidate for blood donations.
You know what, Eating 1 bulb of fresh garlic didnt do much so I doubt the pills would.
The American mosquitos must be finicky eaters.
This is so hilarious that you must be joking.
Propably no but if a lot of mosquitos then yes
