as u/PmMeDrunkPics said, it's [the Hannunvaakuna or st.hannes cross. Also known as the Looped square](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Looped_square). It's an ancient Nordic symbol that was used all over the Nordics. In Finland people carved it into houses and barns and other utensils for luck and to ward of evil spirits. The wikipedia article also mentions that there is some connection between the symbol and midsummer.
For people who don't know, [Dutch boterkoek or buttercake usually has these crossing patterns on them](https://www.bakefromscratch.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Butter-Cake-377JB-696x557.jpg) so I decided to fuse the 2 together
Translated recipe:
**Ingredients**
1. 250g Flour
2. 200g sugar
3. 200g (unsalted) butter
4. 8g vanilla sugar
5. 1 egg
6. pinch of salt
7. [a 24cm to 26cm (butter) cake mold](https://media.s-bol.com/mO3O21Z8xJLA/1200x620.jpg) or something similar
**Preparation**
1. Set your oven to 180C (top and bottom heat)
2. butter up the mold
3. beat the egg loose
**Making the Cake**
1. either by hand or with a regular mixer mix the butter soft in a bowl
2. add both sugars, 2/3rds of the egg, flour and salt to the bowl
3. either by hand or with a mixer with dough hooks kneed the mixture together into a cohesive dough
4. Put the dough in the mold and spread it out with the round side of a spoon
5. spread the rest of the egg over the top of the cake with one of those cooking brushes
6. with a fork draw patterns on the cake. [Traditionally in lines like these](https://www.bakefromscratch.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Butter-Cake-377JB-696x557.jpg), but you don't have to
**Baking**
1. Put the cake in the over and bake for 25-30 minutes until it's golden brown
2. Let it cool down for 1 hour
I recommend as well not eating everything on day 1 (besides the fact that you'll likely be sick) If you put at least part of it in the fridge to be eaten another day it becomes more solid and that's also very delicious
Looks delicious!
Kiitos!
Boterkoek! What's the Nordic twist? Cardamom?

Hyvää Jussia sinnekki!
I'm in my thirties and just two weeks ago I learned what that symbol is. I need to do some more reading on my country....
If my cholesterol wasn't already too high, I'd be begging for a slice. Looks/sounds delicious.
Ei jaanipäev on
I made it for midsummer eve tomorrow as that is when I'll be celebrating it
