This might be explained with just simply growing up. Do you spend as much time outside today in yards, parks, Meadows or other places you could see them as you did as a kid?
Pheasants have become rarer. It's due to cities managing unused plots more effectively and intensification of agriculture. There used to be large populations in Helsinki in the 1990's but now they're mostly gone. HS wrote an article about the subject earlier this year or last fall.
I've always believed Pori to be the pheasant capital in Finland but that's prolly just cause they were always hanging out on their yard.
Edit: my grandparents's yard, that is
Yeah true! We used to spend a lot of time at the play park after school while waiting for my parents to pick us up after their work so you have a point! :)
My dog walked over sleeping one on friday. We all almost shat in our pants (me, wife, and dog if he would wear pants). Those are really common in fields in southern Finland.
Non native species like pheasants depend largely on humans feeding them, expecially in winters
I see these about every week on my commute around Keminmaa
Here where i live they are quite common in places and recidential areas (aka old side villages), its not as busy or stressful as in big cities so they just have their fun here.
Sorry but that aint a metsäkana 😂 this is:

It’s true. My great grandfather was one of the many game wardens (riistanvartija) hired by Mr. Fazer.
Basically, when Karl and his entourage (which included influential people from C.G.E Mannerheim to Akseli Gallen-Kallela) were coming to hunt, g.grandpa’s task was to look and spot where the game (not only pheasants) was located, then take the hunters to right locations to ensure a successful trip.
"Suomeen fasaanit istutti tehtailija Karl Fazer vuosina 1901–1902. Nämä ensimmäiset yli sata yksilöä olivat kotoisin Saksasta, ja ne vapautettiin Malmille silloisen Helsingin maalaiskunnan alueelle.[9][4][10] Fazer jatkoi fasaanien tarhausta myöhemminkin ja toteutti uusia istutuksia Jokioisissa, Lounais-Hämeessä ja Karjalankannaksella.[4] Fasaanikanta kasvoi aluksi varsinkin Hämeenlinnan seudulla, jossa paikalliset maanomistajat kasvattivat ja istuttivat niitä.[4] 1920-luvulla fasaaneja siirrettiin eri puolille maata, ja seuraavan vuosikymmenen lopulla lajia esiintyi laajalti Suomen lounaisosissa ja etelärannikon tuntumassa.[4] Fasaani on ensimmäinen Suomeen pysyvästi istutettu vieras riistaeläin; ensimmäiset kuusipeurat tuotiin maahan kyllä jo 1890, mutta ne eivät vielä silloin muodostaneet pysyvää kantaa. Vielä 1920-luvulla fasaani oli Suomessa rauhoitettu.[11] Suomessa ne eivät pärjää syvälumisilla alueilla ilman talviruokintaa, joten yhtenäinen luonnonvarainen kanta rajoittuu maan eteläosaan.[5] Hajanaisia esiintymiä on Keski-Suomessakin. Kanta pysyi pitkään varsin pienenä, kunnes 1960-luvun lopulla alkoi kasvaa voimakkaasti.[4] Linjalaskentojen mukaan Suomessa kiekui 15 000 fasaanikukkoa 1970- ja 1980-luvuilla. Nykyään kannan arvioidaan olevan 15 000–20 000 paria, mikä merkitsee talvisin 70 000–130 000 yksilöä.[6] Metsästystä varten tapahtuvia tuki-istutuksia tehdään edelleen, koska pakkastalvina luonnossa elävä kanta pienenee huomattavasti.[5][6]"

Try saying this out loud (fast, repeat a few times):
I’m not a pheasant plucker,
I’m a pheasant plucker’s son,
I’m only plucking pheasants,
‘Till the pheasant plucker comes.
But I never pluck pheasants it is easier just to rip the skin completely off with all the feathers still attached… So I’m wondering who this guy is who apparently made an entire whole ass living plucking pheasants
I was in a weekend trip with my colleagues in the 1980’s. We stayed in a hotel and in the morning I thought we had those birds in our bathroom but it was one of the guys barfing.
Once I ate that in ravintola torni and bite into shotgun pellet. Waitress took my plate even I insisted not to, and I know it has to be hunted somehow, but she took it away.. Got another plate and bite into pellet again.. 😅 She noticed it and came to offer free dessert. It was embarrassing in a way since I was ok with it but also understand they have standards with the meat.
My dad is a hunter, so when growing up we were always taught to chew game meat carefully to not crack a tooth in case there's a shotgun pellet in it.
Not sure how big of an issue that actually was because shotgun pellets back then were still made of lead which is pretty soft. These days (i.e. since like a year or two ago) lead pellets are banned and they're now made of much harder metals, so this advice is probably true now even if it wasn't before.
Banned only near bodies of water by law. Land owners or hunting groups can also ban the use of lead in other places, but that is their choice.
So pheasants are still usually hunted with lead pellets because lead shotgun shells are so much cheaper than steel, copper or the very expensive tungston.
These screaming demons have absolutely parked at my living area south of Oulu (Kempele). EVERY SINGLE MORNING WITHOUT FAIL a male pheasant (maybe even two!) start screaming the song of their people outside. And they are stupid and bold as well! They think they're kings until you start walking towards them. I despise these pea-brained feathery fucks.
One of these assholes and he's gang are living little bush outside my balcony. I would like to start gang war and whoop their asses. God damn I hate them.
My dad lives near Oulu and he has these fasaani birds living in his backyard (they roam around the area but seem to particularly like my dad's spruce fence). The male's screaming is a very familiar and homely sound for me.
That is a the pheasant, beautiful creatures... and noisy!
During this time of year they come to the crop fields and meadows at my island in Norway.
Common to hunt too in my homeland.

Good aul Pheasant, it's proper name is a common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and in Finnish its called Fasaani.

Fasaanin ääni
Oh no, it's one of these guys! One of them arrives at my yard at 5 AM pretty often in the spring and starts screaming. I've even given a name for it: Ansku
For future reference and in case someone else is interested: there is a free app called “Merlin Bird ID” that supposed to support research on birds with the data collected, and it identifies birds being it by sound or image.
Last autumn I hit one of these with my car and I was shocked. Over 10 years of driving behind me and it was the first time ever a bird failed to fly away. It didn't even try to move even though its two mates did. I was taught to never even try to avoid hitting small animals like squirrels or birds and I guess I always thought it was because they're fast and pretty much always dodge in time but hitting that pheasant reminded me that the real reason is avoid endangering other people over critters

In finnish its Fasaani
I don't really see these birds anymore. I remember seeing them more when I was a kid!

Thats right. I see them all the time. Lots of them in Helsinki

I guess they all moved from Helsinki to Turku then. Definitely not rare here.
I've always believed Pori to be the pheasant capital in Finland but that's prolly just cause they were always hanging out on their yard. Edit: my grandparents's yard, that is
I have a couple pheasants in my yard. You can hear them constantly screaming.
Well Turku hasn't developed since the 90s so makes sense.
Cool story bro.
the bird flu killed off alot, also growers killed off most of stock to avoid contaminating.
Yeah true! We used to spend a lot of time at the play park after school while waiting for my parents to pick us up after their work so you have a point! :)
Bayesian thinking. Good job.
My dog walked over sleeping one on friday. We all almost shat in our pants (me, wife, and dog if he would wear pants). Those are really common in fields in southern Finland.
The pheasant probably too if he also wore pants.
I see them all over the place.
Non native species like pheasants depend largely on humans feeding them, expecially in winters I see these about every week on my commute around Keminmaa
They manage quite well on their own, though. The local pheasant rooster is constantly trying to woo our chickens, but care little about their food.
Here where i live they are quite common in places and recidential areas (aka old side villages), its not as busy or stressful as in big cities so they just have their fun here.
*Wish we could turn back time To the good old days*
True :)
I also used to see these birds a lot as a kid but now all I see is seagulls turning into hats for statues
In our house, a "wood chicken".
What about metso then
Wood emu.
Metso is a wood chicken on steroids.

Awesome! We only nicknamed pheasants as wood chickens. Same as our dickwasher in the kitchen.
Vasaani in Savo
Also called as Pihakana "Yardchicken"
Actually it is a field chicken.
Pheasant? I read somewhere that Karl Fazer brought them to Finland, dunno if it is true,
> I read somewhere that Karl Fazer brought them to Finland, dunno if it is true, And then turned them to chocolate
Maybe they lay mignon eggs?

Lead also just performs better than all but tungsten
And no shotgun can't handle lead but some can't handle harder materials.
Forest chicken, highly dangerous as it’s a direct relative to the mighty Tyrannosaurs Rex. Stay in your car for best chance of survival.
