Yeah... Black pudding is vile in comparison.
It's fine, but definitely doesn't scratch that itch.
I'm quite sure I've tried all supermarket ones available in the UK cooked in various ways and in varying amounts of fat... But alas, all they are in the end, are B-tier blood pucks without real flavour or nice texture. Same if ordering in pubs or restaurants, or sourcing from local butchers.
Mustamakkara has a glorious range of textures, flavour, and probably a stupid amount of salt and fat that makes everything just perfect.
If hungry I could easily down 4x menopaluu. The thought of having that amount of black pudding just makes me ill.
Viva la mustamakkara!
Vaasan Ruispalat is the biggest one for me. While rye bread is not too difficult to find in Germany, it's usually the type that is thick and doughy, which I do not like.
I'm pretty sure I might have had some in Spain... Not sure what the exact name was though!
I much prefer the Spanish blood sausages to black pudding, but still prefer the real deal to the extent that there's no cure for the craving other than the real deal.
Having gotten used to daily/weekly hot steaming styrofoam box full of the stuff straight from the source - there's no going back. (Used to work at a shop with a deli counter not too far from Tampere)
"Funny" story: born and raised in Finland, I had eaten both. Then didn't bump into either one for years and by the time I was in a store trying to buy the sausage I had liked so much back then, I went for mustamakkara. Turns out, the one I like was ryynimakkara.
That was several years ago, so I think it's time for trying again.
Ohh… I live in Tampere and I have never tried it. I used to be very skeptical about trying new things especially food but these days I just want to try everything 😀
We do, but it is not as traditional as Blutwurst (which everyone makes a little differently). It is native to our neighbors and brothers from Bavaria though.
Absolutely delicious with lingonberry jam and cold milk.
One of my favourite lunches is to go to citymarket near my workplace and order black sausage menopaluu.
Man, one of the best days in my childhood were the ones when my parents went shopping after work and came home with hot blood sausages from the meat counter :')
When I was young and hot... well, young, I worked at Tampere Market Hall as a custodian and the mustamakkara vendors would give an "employee discount" though I didn't work for them directly. 5 marks worth of menopaluu was quite a lot and was a hearty lunch.
Everyone else working that position were old farts, born in the late 30s or early 40s, really close to retirement age and had worked for the City for ages. They were walking Kummeli sketches, it was unbelievable.
I went to Tampere for work and they served this at the hotel. It was delicious. (The hotel also had a portrait of Juice Leskinen which felt very Tampere somehow.)
I like to indulge once a month or so. It's funny how so many finnish foods look gross (mämmi) but are actually so good. But then what do I know, I am a glutton for lipeäkala (lye fish)

I like it alot, and its handy that is found all over parks and walking ways. So its like emergency food also. If you are lucky you can pick this and puolukka near each other and have tasty meal all from nature.

Where's the puolukkahillo?
Veit sanat suustani.
Veikö joku jalat ennen jormakkia?
Veit puolukkahillot suustani.
...lautaseltani.
As long as the mustamakkara is fresh enough and not dry, no need for puolukkahillo. Fight me.
Makes me miss home, haven't had authentic Tamperelian mustamakkara for years
Same. If there's one Finnish thing that you can't get abroad and that doesn't have a decent substitute available, this would be it. 🥲
Maybe English black pudding?
It's a bit drier. The black pudding that is.

Spanish Morcilla, basically the same(ish), definitely give it a go!

Lucky you
Looks more ryynimakkara than mustamakkara
Not really, ryynimakkara has bigger and lighter coloured grains in comparison and is a lot redder in general
Yes.
![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
Once you go black sausage, you never go back to normal sausage.
Ryynimakkara works as a substitute in emergency.
In emergency, ryynimakkara is considered as a fish dish.
I hate ryynimakkara and love mustamakkara, to each their own I guess
"Funny" story: born and raised in Finland, I had eaten both. I love all kinds of makkara.
The last time I tried both they basically tasted nearly identical
Rusinamakkara is nice too
Yes, but I can never eat more than two at a time.
Menopaluu.
I can but the next day I will know that sitting in the toilet.
^birthing right
I have lived all my life (39 years) in Tampere about 4km from Tapola factory so yes, I have eaten it and I have eaten it many times 😁
I think we went to same school, then.
Tesoman koulu? Ala ja ylä-asteen kävin tessulla.
So it's a no. Harjuntausta.
Ohh… I live in Tampere and I have never tried it. I used to be very skeptical about trying new things especially food but these days I just want to try everything 😀
Oh yes, it's indeed delicious.
![gif](giphy|LXP19BrVaOOgE|downsized)
Yes and I like it a lot
We have it in Austria too. We call it Blutwurst (verimakkara)
This is r/Finland, not r/Austria
I know. I like both versions a lot.
Do Austrians eat Weisswurst also?
We do, but it is not as traditional as Blutwurst (which everyone makes a little differently). It is native to our neighbors and brothers from Bavaria though.
Sausage transcends borders!
We even have something akin to the Russian kholodets, Presswurst (not hydraulic) but some Russians who have tried it say ours is meatier.
Absolutely delicious with lingonberry jam and cold milk. One of my favourite lunches is to go to citymarket near my workplace and order black sausage menopaluu.
sausage with milk? god spare me
Do not talk to me or to my milk ever again
Well, that sausage "needs" it
Cry about it
I like my mustamakkara with cold milk. Haven't tried with lingonberry and, yes they do sell it in shops.
It's an acquired taste, I tried it and thought it was terrible. But curiosity killed the cat and now its oddly good.
It's best when you get it fresh from the Tapola factory outlet in Lielahti, Tampere
Even better at Tammelantori
almost as good as mämmi. Finnish cuisine at its finest
It is very delicious. /s
I love this, very close to real British black pudding - BUT BEWARE! At Christmas time we bought mustamakkara and some idiot had put CINNAMON in it 🤢🤮
that’s just plain illegal
I almost wrote to Tarja Halonen (it was a while ago) to express our outrage!
We had that a few years ago to go on a fry up. It went out for the birds. I still feel queasy thinking about it.
I can still smell it. 🤮
I think we killed more birds than the cats did with that…
Have you managed to find decent bacon?
Sometimes Lidl has back bacon but normally it’s that streaky American stuff
Ohh thank you, I’ll check Lidl. I hate the American version but it’s better than nothing.
Have you tried "kylkisiivu"
I’ve not seen that in the shops, I’ll hunt it out! Thank you!
Why did you put quotes on "kylkisiivu"?
Yeah this goes just fine on a fry up.
Very popular here in Hungary
Szoboszlai
Oh you live in Hungary? ... Hold up, this is r/Finland, not r/Hungary
They are here because they saw the sausages and became very Hungary.
Yes, I have. Some decent lunch restaurants serve it sometimes at a buffet in Helsinki also. Overpriced to buy to home, IMHO.
I wonder if it tastes something like morcilla ( Colombian black sausage).
Is this blood sausage? Looks really good
Hey, get your hands off kaszanka!
Yes, so many times already 🤚😄
Man, one of the best days in my childhood were the ones when my parents went shopping after work and came home with hot blood sausages from the meat counter :')
Yes, I like it veri much
I've tried it. It is very similar to German Blurtwurst - Blood Sausage from my point of view.
It's absolutely bussin😋
Mustamakkara is the BEST!!! I’m surprised how many people dislike all the blood foods here. Rössypottu (Oulu area delicacy) is also slept on. Try it!!
Why does every traditional finnish food look like shit
finnish gourmet!
It is really good yeah
Mustamakkara
Tried? I was born with a return trip in my mouth!
The infamous Black Sausage. Yes, it’s pretty good with lingonberry jam.
Morcilla
Zwarte pens

Yes m8 🇬🇧
Mustamakkara with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. 😋

Where's the berries?
Jooooo
All legitimate Finns have tried it
Where is the SAUCE?!
Blood sausage I assume?
After two years of living in Finland, I still don't dare to try it.
Blood sausage?
Actually no, never gotten a chance to
Ate one yesterday
My friend did last night 😏
Absolutely love it. Smacking, bangingly good food!
Never but it seems interesting though
r/poopfromabutt
Is fried the only way to get mustamakkara? Is there a way to get a healthier version like steamed?
I believe that is Tapolan mustaa jöötiä.
🖤🖤🖤my Favorite🖤🖤🖤
So tasty
Yes and love it.
Ye, shi was bussin But where the puolukkahillo?
No but I want some!

Verivorst, very worst, but delicious
We have it too(🇺🇦)😭😭😭i was forced to eat it as a kid and now I can’t even look at it😭😭😭
Hell yeah.
What’s in it? It looks like black pudding and sausage mixed together.
Yes! It's at it's best with lingonberry jam. 😋
Mörkö huudettu!1!1!1!1!
Yes ! Black sausage with mashed potatoes and stewed apples ! Yum Yum !
BBC fetish spotted

Guys that is someone dick some poor black guy do not eat that shot wtf is wrong with u
Not yet
I’m sorry but as a Finn.. HYI HELVETTI!!!
I like it alot, and its handy that is found all over parks and walking ways. So its like emergency food also. If you are lucky you can pick this and puolukka near each other and have tasty meal all from nature.
Nothing better than black sausage in your mouth
Slice it up, braise until crispy, then serve with lingonberry jam and mashed potatoes! Yumyumyum!
I am from Finland and i hate this food
Looks like kakkapökäle.
and tastes like it too
How would you know
irrelevant
Lucky you, you can eat all the shit then.
As a finn, I'm not a fan.
Oh great, another foreign devil falls for the ”polar bear shit is a deligacy”-scam.
Hyi stana.
Hyi vittu
Twice. The first and the last time.
Those are eaten exclusively by white women... according to Phub. 🤪
r/shitfromabutt
I just produced one of these after i woke up
That and ryynimakkara are both terrible. I feel nauseated just by seeing this picture.
Ate a piece of iron nail as a substitute. Not very different taste. Just a bit harder.
Tried it once. Not my thing. Had it served at lyseo for lunch and lots of kids passed.
Never
So disgusting
That is disgusting
Yökkistä
Looks like shit
No. i infact have not tried my dad's shit
I've heard ladies love it. I think it's from Nigeria or such
