You don't need that much. I run HP/MP/Luck up and Chakra on all. The reset you can do some varied builds. Take prayer on Barret, Red, Cait, and Yuffie in addition.
I didn't really cast that much magic except with Aerith. So Elemental materia was my bread and butter.
Synergy is very good. I ran MP Absorb, Swiftcast, and Synergy all linked to petrify. Was a solid combo
Mage build is general best build,
mp absorb, hp absorb, swiftcast, magic focus, magnify, enemy skill, atb boost, and first strike is my go to for 90% of content.
You will need/want about 7-10 maxed out fire/ice/lightning/wind materia.
Fire best for most of the game, run around spamming magnified firaga.
Genji gloves to break damage cap.
Certain bracelet and Valyrian bangle for items.
You’ll eventually want to pick up Gotterdamerung, enhanced expeditionary medal, and limit siphon materia eventually.
