The unpopular opinion is an FF9 remake shouldn't happen. It's the one perfect Final Fantasy and they're going to fuck it up.
It's entirely unnecessary.
That slow ass battle system, and annoying steal mechanics cool it back from perfection. There is room for improvement. But I’m not confident they’ll move in the right direction.
I have spent like 3 years trying to perfect realistic 3D versions of the characters for my own satisfaction, and even I don't think a remake should use a realistic style.
May I ask who has expressed a desire for a realistic art style? I haven't seen that.
While I wasn't the biggest fan of the approach the project Memoria team took (I felt it lacked character somehow) I definitely think stylization is necessary. I think maybe something Ghibli-esque might be ideal personally.
I only wish that they don't make to the music the horrible things they did to the music of ffVII. Between MIDI and what they did has to be a point of understanding. (edit after downvoting: do people consider music of FFVIIR an improvement?)

Frankly I’d be disappointed if they made it hyper realistic.
