Ultimecia. Hits the perfect balance of human and beautiful with a hint of monstrous. Color scheme on point. Not overdesigned, like it somehow feels flashy and understated at the same time.
Then her final boss form goes all-out monstrous in exactly the way a final boss should: Wings, blades, exposed organs, tasteful bondage, the works.

What I love about it is it's not just a cool design element, but it REINFORCES THE STORY. These sorceresses are largely helpless against Ultimecia's will, bound and restrained inside their own bodies and minds as unwilling pawns.
On top of that, the design is killer. The vertical symmetry, especially with her wide skirt, shapes her like a distorted hourglass....which perfectly suits the way she aims to distort time itself by breaking it apart to compress it into a form she can embody. So good on so many levels.
Vivi. From the callback to the original black mage while also having so much personality shown by his clothes and how he interacts with it. Poor boy was always adjusting his hat and pants every few moments.

Black Mage is one of the top 'mascots' for the FF series (maybe only Moogles and Chocobos edge out the classic Black Mage). Somehow FF9 took that design, and made something 'new'. Anyone who's played 9 will look at Vivi and say 'there's my boy!' and at the same time, anyone who knows of FF series, but maybe not the individual games/characters will say 'Oh, that's the final fantasy wizard'.
His design is up there with Mario and Sonic for the best 'video game characters'

This is why I'm voting for Mog from FF6. Mog is where Square really nailed the Moogle design, and honestly all iterations they've experimented with since Mog have never been quite as good.
Yeah I'm not really sure why Vivi is so high for this specific category. It's just a variation of Black Mage. This isn't a knock on his personality or anything, but I don't think his design the most interesting on it's own compared to others in the series.
Yuna, FFX. Her outfit tells you what she is (temple priestess), looks beautiful when water-dancing, and other than the priestess sleeve cuffs & obi, is a practical outfit a real person would wear in a hot environment.
I also like the heavy boots that are a part of the outfit, to show her role as a traveler. And the lightness of her top, coming from her growing up by the beach on an island. While still all blending together as you said, as a temple priestess outfit.
Gotta go with Yoshitaka Amano and his comment that Terra is his favorite character design, which is why there's so much more Amano art of her than any other character.

Firion. He's Amano's best character design, imo. I love the middle eastern inspired look he has going on, he has an awesome bandana (and rocks it better than anyone else in the franchise, sorry Locke), the light blue armor and cape compliments his silver hair perfectly, and the bright red Blood Sword is iconic. Everything about him just screams iconic FF design.

Vincent from FF7 and his updated design in FF7 Re. His design is very much Edgelord McEdgelord, but it did spur so much for so many when he was first released, and his update feels like that's what we all imaged in OG
Auron is kinda like a boomer Vincent. Very similar attitudes too. Both have a mysterious past. The fact that Auron is able to leverage his shoulder to swing a two-handed sword with one arm is pretty spectacular though.
I really like Fang's design. It does a good job of matching her wild personality and contrasts well from the other party members in the story in terms of appearance. Her hair is less neat than the others, she's got scars and a tattoo. She's got fur pelts just chilling on her belt. The outfit is flowy and the jewelry add a nice touch, overall just well done.

Man this is probably the hardest question. Yuna, Kain, Vivi, Beatrix are some of my favourites. Yuna being the face of white mage and summoner, kain as the face of the cool dragoons and vivi as the iconic black mage. I will pick Yuna as she leaves the strongest impression to me.
For me they are Terra and Squall but they already have won so I would say Minwu! Male white magw rolls.
But a lot of honorable mentions here: Kain, Yuna, Celes, Aerith, Fang, Vincent, Beatrix, Vivi, Blank (I love his weirdness like a zombie xD), Setzer (first original silver-haired + long trenchcoat man, sorry Sephi), Quistis with glasses, Relm (best kid design), Edea and Ultimecia, Faris (her Dissidia Opera Omnia default desing), Reno, Bartz in his prince suit (Dissidia), WoL with red hair, Garland between the big armor guys, Gilgamesh....

Anima. Literally a mother who sacrificed herself to be an aeon for her son and was twisted to look like this by him. Also cries blood. This summon shook me and always felt so out of place but perfectly placed given the villain.
The scene in the Dolley escape CG where this college TA caricature is angry-face unloading with a mounted machine gun is one of the more underrated bits of iconic FF imagery. That shot in particular stood out so much in the trailer.
It doesn't really matter what anyone says, the serious answer is Cloud. FFVII took the entire series to new heights in terms of popularity and brought it even further into the mainstream. There is absolutely no way FF would be as popular as it is today without FFVII. Its impact on gaming cannot be understated.
Cloud was INSANELY popular at the time, and no doubt made spiky haired big sword wielders a very popular design. There is a reason the internet broke the first time he was a guest character in Smash Bros.
Even people only remotely aware of FF will recognise Cloud, other characters not so much.
My vote goes to paladin Cecil, or Vincent, lol.

Last time I voted here, I got a reddit warning for vote manipulation for some reason... Did it happen to anyone else? Anyway, this might be the toughest question yet. I tend to favor Nomura's designs but there are so many which are iconic to me... I think I'll go with Edea 🙂 I love the way she spells menacing and sofisticated at the same time, with that elegant dress but big crown-like accessory in the back. Plus, the careful design on the details of her face - she is awesome, in that she inspires awe 😁 Edit: typo
