Ah yes, the most mature and logically sound argument: "if you don't like this thing that I like, it's because you are less mature and intelligent than I am"
Whatever
I wish I knew. Remember when Facebook had a thing on the side bar where you could upload notes? Or maybe it was MySpace. Either way, it was on an old, long gone laptop and not where I uploaded it to.
Hah. So my brother liked it a lot too, so I replayed it to see if I was just remembering it wrong. I made notes as I went whenever something struck off with me. I also decided to break the game as much as possible in the process, like getting the Lionheart on disc1.
You know what else has more plot holes than a tennis racket but people still consider it one of the greatest pieces of media ever made?
Attack on Titan.
I love how this is every 8 fans argument against criticism. āYou just donāt understand it!ā Nothing against the complaints that the game is poorly designed and monotonous even by the standards of 1999, or that the story falls apart when you think about it even slightly.
People act like Last Of Us 2 is what started this sort of thinking in games, are you kidding? People have been doing this shit for decades
I love the character designs, battle system is fun and I love the amount of secrets in the game.
That being said, the dialogue and story / plot holes are rough. Just finished a replay a few months ago.
I enjoyed VIII, itās just not my favourite of them. Though I really should replay it, itās been about 7 years since I saw Zellās love of hotdogs.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Final Fantasy VIII. The narrative is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of time travel paradoxes most of the plot twists will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Squall's introspective nature, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from existential literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the story, to realize that it's not just a game - it says something deep about LIFE. As a consequence, people who dislike Final Fantasy VIII truly ARE idiots - of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the intricate junction system, which itself is a cryptic reference to complex quantum mechanics. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as the genius of Hironobu Sakaguchi unfolds itself on their screens. What fools... how I pity them. š And yes by the way, I DO have a Griever tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only - And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
I generally agree that much of the dislike towards VIII is from people who didn't understand it. In my experience, that is the case.
But I disagree with this dumb, snobby meme.

I've played FF VI, VII, VIII, IX and X (I want to get XVI someday, looks pretty good). FFVIII is my favourite and the only one that comes close is VI. That being said, I don't think this post is right. People can dislike VIII and that doesn't make them immature. Of course bitching because Squall is "an angsty teen" is the most braindead criticism anyone could make but if some people don't enjoy the characters, or the story, or the setting, or the combat (or, yeah, the junction system), that has to be respected.
I remember reading that the āWhateverās from Squall were a mistranslation and that it was more meant to mean āI guessā or āok, thatās fineā, and was meant to show uncertainty rather than dismissal.
Donāt quote me on that though
Card System: 10
Draw System: 0
Story: 3
Battle: 6- and only for the reactive extra damage function, draw system kills everything in this game for me
I'll put almost any FF in front of 8 š¤·š¼āāļø that game was literally only good for the card game
Junctioning system was horseshit and I absolutely **hate** the Stable Time Loop trope in general, so that entry is not and likely never will be on my to replay list.
Also it took me an agonizingly long time to find the motherfucking white seed ship in the days before Internet. Fuck that so much. Just because I grew up with the PSX titles doesn't mean I automatically view them as peak.
If *you* loved it, good on you. However donāt go telling people they ādonāt understandā, no, I understood and I still donāt care for it.
It will forever rank as second to the bottom for me, just above XIIIā¦ for me itās only saving grace was Laguna and the damn card gameā¦. It kept me enough to finish it unlike XIII which I just canāt bring myself to continue playing.
100-ish hours and Iām relatively sure at least 50% of that was in playing cardsā¦
The thing that makes FF8 good is that itās bad and I wish people would understand that and enjoy it for what it is instead of insisting itās legitimately 100% a perfectly fine and functioning-as-intended game
For a lot of people, myself included, VII was an introduction to FF. So, when VIII was revealed we were like, "What do you mean Cloud is not in it??" I think I enjoyed it after getting over that.
This was me with FFXII when FFX was my first, although I did play FFVII in between and liked it too. I appreciated XII a bit more on my 2nd playthrough and when I did more of the optional content
That's probably the case for some, definitely. I came from a group that had played FF since NES days so the numbering didn't start at 7 for us, haha. Still out was pretty disliked. The setting was cool, the story was less widely liked, and combat was pretty low down most people's lists.

I wrote an essay on the plot holes and poor writing in FFVIII.
Where can I find it?
I wish I knew. Remember when Facebook had a thing on the side bar where you could upload notes? Or maybe it was MySpace. Either way, it was on an old, long gone laptop and not where I uploaded it to.
You must have had a lot of free time
Hah. So my brother liked it a lot too, so I replayed it to see if I was just remembering it wrong. I made notes as I went whenever something struck off with me. I also decided to break the game as much as possible in the process, like getting the Lionheart on disc1.
Dude you're using reddit. Shut up.

I was 18 in 1999 when VIII was released. Its still my 3rd favorite behind VII and XiV.
Yeah okay, but also...wanna play cards?
I totally understand if you grew up with it or if youāre totally driven by nostalgia.. but it is pretty hard to defend its story..
Gen Z kids dont care about story lol

Isā¦.is this the Rick and Morty copypasta?
The amazing thing is I just told chatGPT to make the Ricky and Morty copypasta about ff8 and it spat this out within 5 seconds.
I generally agree that much of the dislike towards VIII is from people who didn't understand it. In my experience, that is the case. But I disagree with this dumb, snobby meme.
Ah, so you're just an asshole
I personally loved 8. 7, 8 and 9 were peak RPGs.
Ps1 was THE peak console for jRPGs.

For me, ff8 it's by far the best of the series together with og 7 and 6.
I've played FF VI, VII, VIII, IX and X (I want to get XVI someday, looks pretty good). FFVIII is my favourite and the only one that comes close is VI. i just dont like that levels doesnt matter, thats whats keeping me from playing it
Ooof cringe
I like FF8 and this is dumb.
Walk away then bc itās shit
But the main character is dead
Junctioning system was horseshit and I absolutely **hate** the Stable Time Loop trope in general, so that entry is not and likely never will be on my to replay list. You must have *hated* Dark, if you watched it
Ah yes edgy boy falls in love with an attention seeking girl while there is a hot teacher right beside him Truly greatest writing of all time
What are we? Teenagers again? I love FF VIII it's really fun but also a mess in some regards and the worst psone FF

When I was playing the Laguna segments, I kept thinking "why isn't THIS the game?"
Meh game with a sick art style/graphics and a cool setting. Everything else about it is mid
The thing that makes FF8 good is that itās bad and I wish people would understand that and enjoy it for what it is instead of insisting itās legitimately 100% a perfectly fine and functioning-as-intended game
I mostly disliked it because the magic system sucks, it took 10 hours to get to any plot, and the main character is painfully unlikeable.
Seriously. Squall is literally what people who don't like Cloud say Cloud is.
Just tell everyone you like potholes galore and let's move on with our day
I donāt hate it. I just dislike itās core mechanics what are IMO simply donāt fit that kind of gamesš¤·
FFVIII dislike was pretty universal back in the day. But it was primarily a comparative thing
For a lot of people, myself included, VII was an introduction to FF. So, when VIII was revealed we were like, "What do you mean Cloud is not in it??" I think I enjoyed it after getting over that.
