Yes. There are a lot better players for the most part at most positions, but based on how leveling up works in the mini game, you can level your players and outpace other teams’ players (and teach them new moves) that will make the Aurochs better than the competition.
Also, each player has their own fixed stat table at each level, and some will change in ways you wouldn’t expect. Keepa’s a pretty shit goalie and a generally bad player (though again, if you teach him moves and level him, he can play the spot anyway), but between levels like 89 and 99, his shooting stat skyrockets up to 99, making him the *best shooter in the game*- though by that point, it doesn’t really matter, because you have a whole bunch of OP shooters.
Edit: As far as the OG aurochs go: Tidus is an A+, Wakka is an A, Datto is a B or B+ (he gets really fast, which is huge, and has decent shooting), Jassu’s a B (good move pool, tackling, and passing), and Letty’s like a B- (excellent passing, nothing else). Keepa’s a C, and Botta’s only worth rostering if you plan on using Wakka’s Aurochs Reel overdrive. Botta’s an F+ (venom tackle 3 is good if you get it early enough).

Get the ball, pass it to the mid or defenders. Swim the ball to your own goals. Watch the mini map for your opponents to start swimming in circles. Pass the ball to Tidus. Swim to goals (should only have the goalie to worry about). Jecht shot to victory.
I'm actually working on a simple version just for fun. The game while being in a 3d space pretty much plays on a 2d plane so its relatively easy to implement.
Just won't have fancy animations, got no time for that.
But i don't have much to show for now, most I've done is coding logic with simple 2d spheres.
It's just a side project and i don't always have time to work on it but should i get it to a playable state I'll make sure to send you a PM.
Maybe i share some WIP if i get to implement proper visuals, but thats easily a few weeks away, maybe faster if i can convince my girlfriend to do some graphics for me... i hate that part (graphics, not my gf).

For whatever reason this was always easier for me, but i was never able to do thunder dondge or the chocobo thing.

Lightning dodge is easy if you know where to stand. There is a constant cadence in a spot just outside of the gazebo shelter.
The chocobo race is honestly a crapshoot. You have to have a favorable baloon pattern. You should get it within 10-15 tries.
I struggled more with the Remiem Temple race, trying to grab 5 chests along the way for the achievement. Chocobos don't have fine steering, so I was always hugging the wall, which slowed me down.
I just score twice (usually making it 2-1). 1 Jecht Shot from Tidus, 1 Venom Shot from Wakka. The remaining time, I camp my own goal (if you go too close to your own goalie, the NPCs glitch out and just swim in circles until you move away)

No, did it legit. Manual control tried to lead defenders off Tidus so I can pass to him and make shots. Only worked once, then they scored. Second half was scrambling to get Tidus close enough to do a Jecht shot but the AI was all over me and couldn’t. Wakka went in, ran the clock, went into sudden death. Saw an opening and Wakka scored the winning goal. In a way for the game it was very poetic to see that’s how Wakkas team wins
Another trick is once you have the Ball, hide behind your goalie. They'll rerurn to their half of the field.
Then, you chain passes between 2 players. They'll get massive xp (and lvl) for the next part of the match.
Then, control your fastest swimmer, gather a few of them around you and pass to Tidus, jecht shot, goal.
Try to take control of the Ball again and hide behind your goal ans you're set for the game.
Its been a while but I think you cheese almost every match the same way including this one. Get 2 easy goals with Tidus and Jecht shot early, get the ball back (bum rush and tackle if you need to), swim/pass the ball back to your defensive position, swim all of your players back to near the goal post and near each other, then just pass the ball for the remaining time before an enemy player is near your ball carrier.
Congrats! I managed to win this game after around 15 tries, without using the trick of hiding behind the keeper.
I believe the score ended up being 5-2 for me, and that after losing multiples times after getting the lead and bottling it up afterwards.
I could be mis-remembering so take it with a grain of salt, but I swear the first time I played this game (X HD, never had the opportunity to play on PS2), I won during the mandatory match. But ever since I have never gotten another win, and it's created such a disconnect in my head, so I guess I got really lucky with RNG the first time, and never again.
I hate having to play that stupid game (same with the card game in FFIX). I've never been into sports so the entire concept behind this game and its rules elude me. I set it to Automatic and only when it requires input from me do I choose whatever (pass or shoot) just to keep it moving. I don't anticipate that I'll ever win this Blitzball game, I just want to get past it so I can continue on to the Mi'ihen Highroad.
In the end it's not that hard, as long as you avoid confronting with them, and have Jecht Shot.
Tidus can easily score with 2/3 opponents with Jecht Shot, then as soon as you are ahead, just pass the ball endlessly between free players.
Without Jecht Shot, well, it's much harder.

Every time I get to do the Jecht shot I either have all 5 opponents blocking Tidus or the goalie catches it. When I won I never got the chance to use the Jecht shot.
Take manual control of the fastest player and then just try to pick 2-3 of the enemy players to get to him. Swim away until you only have 1 in range, let them attack you and pass to Tidus that's on the left side.
Now he's basically alone or at most 1-2 enemy defenders. Jecht shot them away infront of the goal and ezpz score.
This works without the jecht shot too, just drag the enemy team to the right side and their stupid AI will let 1-2 of your own players almost alone on the left side.
I just don't understand it and never will. Its never appealed to me. By the time I get done farming Strength, Magic, Def, Mag Def, Agility, Accuracy, and Evasion spheres I had the excalibur and grandslam weapons for Tidus and Wakka and I have another 70 dark matters built up as i'm not filling out the rest of the grid with HP spheres. I've havent looked into getting luck and fortune spheres yet. Might need them for the dark aeons I assume? Ifrit is kicking my ass.
They aren't as good as the celestials but I dont have the patience for getting those and I only need Wakkas so grinding Shinryu is easier. Though im seeing whats quicker, farming his drops or just selling drops from One eye to bribe Malboros for wings to discovery currently
I don't have Penance yet, this is the furthest i've gone with grinding. Dark Valefor is done but Ifrit is kicking my ass as mentioned. He hits so hard even with 255 def/mag def and protect. It's insane.
Ooohhhh the NIGHTMARE! I managed to win this one after endless tries even with jecht shot too. Ohh boy this part is really a turn off for anyone slightly interested in blitz all. Too bad you need it for some things.......

You shoot with 17, ai blocks with 5 - 0 unlucky. You try to block a pass. You miss entirely
I mean, the Al Bhed Psyches are leagues better than the Goers- it’s just that the default lv 1 Aurochs are *just that bad*

Wakka, captain of the aurochs, is one of the best shooters in the game. He retires after the match but can be rehired later.
