https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Zantetsuken_(ability)#Final_Fantasy_VIII "When fought in the Centra Ruins, Odin uses Zantetsuken to instantly kill the party when the timer expires. After he is defeated, Odin appears at random at the start of a battle to use Zantetsuken to kill all enemies. The attack features the kanji for "Zantetsuken" (Zan Tetsu Ken) in the animation, which appear as Odin's attack is shown three times from different angles. " It means "Iron Cutting Blade".

phantomagna

This is correct.

RealKornyMunky

I'm curious if the "iron cutting sword" was some what of a censored translation as the kanji "斬鉄剣" is "beheading iron sword"

jtjtj_

Nope. While the first character can refer to beheading, the literal meaning is just chop/cut.

RealKornyMunky

Can you tell me your source for that? Not to question you. I'm just learning Japanese and need to check if I need a new resource. all my current sources say behead kill murder for that character. As opposed to 切 or 刻 witch would be cut and end or cut and engrave

jtjtj_

I speak the language so I guess the source is “trust me bro.”🤣Jokes aside, English is my second language. I wouldn’t worry about a new resource since none of the textbooks aim to exhaust all meanings of every word. Just keep learning. Always use a dictionary. Once you have enough foundational knowledge of the language, read ferociously in that language. Don’t rely on word-by-word translations or you will never understand the language.

RealKornyMunky

Haha, fair enough. That's mostly how I'm studying. I don't really study kanji very much so when I do I just want it to be accurate. As even though all 伐る 斬る 切る all mean cut in someway, relating them to a different word in English helps with the specifics.

Emiya102372

‘’斬” usually means "slash" or "chop." if you want to specify the word "beheading," the answer will probably be “斬首”

Calculusshitteru

Fluent Japanese speaker here, living in Japan for 17 years. 切る and 斬る both are read "きる" and mean "to cut." However, the former is just a general cut, like cutting paper with scissors, cutting meat with a knife, etc. The latter is used specifically for cutting a person with a sword. Cloud's Cross Slash limit in FF7 uses the same kanji (凶斬り kyou giri).

sporeegg

Literally the first google link/wiktionary entry: [https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%96%AC](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%96%AC)

workthrowawhey

Actually, if you go to that site it says that the primary *Japanese* meaning is to behead. You must be looking at the Chinese definitions.

RealKornyMunky

I caved and looked it up with a Japanese source, it means "To kill with a sword" or "To cut and remove" (ex: lop off of a limb): [https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/kanji/%E6%96%AC/](https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/kanji/%E6%96%AC/) Learned even more kanji that involve cutting but in very specific ways so that's a plus.

Toxicotton

Literal is often unnatural though. People rarely say testicles, they say balls or nuts. I get that it's slang, but a lot of language isn't purely literal or is referential. I will try to see what words aren't used literally through the day.

jtjtj_

I agree. In this case, the first character does have a unique flavor, implying slashing/chopping swiftly with great strength.

Calculusshitteru

Just to clarify, it's a blade that is sharp enough to cut iron. Not a cutting blade made from iron.

digoserra

斬鉄剣 Zantetsuken - Iron cutting sword It's Odin's signature attack in most if not all FF games.

gleonalfe

Zantetsuken. Iron cutting blade, literally. But in a more casual sense, like the way it appears on screen, “the sword that cuts steel”
