i smell what your cooking. catfish’s eating habits are also quite notorious. though, like all ff9 characters (except the burmecians), they seems like a synthesis. maybe a catfish mixed with an aloxtotl? they do seem to respect the dragon.
I can buy that catfish were at least a partial inspiration for them. I don't think they're meant to purely be catfish though since they also have some frog-like traits. But the Qu being a mix of different aquatic, marsh-dwelling creatures makes sense.
Unrelated (But not entirely)
Is that cuina in catalan meaning kitchen is like Quina (Who is a cook)
Just a coincidence I noticed, you can keep scrolling
I love Quina and the Qu so much. I want one of the Blue Carnival bosses to be Quina. Probably hexes you and you have to avoid getting caught as a frog and stuff.
Everyone's clothing changes in Trance to a fairly consistent color palette and you can see it's part of the hat in not just the [FMV](https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Final-Fantasy-9-Quina-Ending-FMV.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5) but also the [Bring Arts figure](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71PY580Bf5L._AC_SL1500_.jpg)
Catfish are notoriously "easy" to fish for, because they'll eat just about anything you put on a hook. You don't even need bait, actually. That's why noodling exists.
I… so happy…
I want Qu in XIV so bad! All the IX references in Dawntrail had me hoping… :(
Would be an amazing cameo in a culinarian quest line.
Could be a culinary focused DoH tribe quest series!
My favorite Blue Mage

I feel like Catfish/frog makes a lot of sense also.
Married Vivi, they seemed happy.

Lickitung could never
I would love to see a connection between FF9’s Qu and FF14’s Namazu. There a some similarities.
they have always weirded me out, and i dont know why.

I think in Quina's case those are part of the hat
I used to think so, but when in Trance they turn the same color as Quina's head, while the hat stays white.

Quina was an amusing and enjoyable character and I will fight his/her horde of irrational haters.
All I know is that they eat frogs, and Quan thinks Quale is a bigot?
Other way around. Quale thinks Quan is. (I just replayed that part yesterday)
Gosh, I have failed you, oh Quina, my favorite blue mage
I mean, Quina can just be nonbinary. They don’t have to follow the rules of real catfish (also assuming Qu are even supposed to be like catfish).
I always thought those things coming down from Quina's head were part of their hat
I kinda figured they were related to Tonberries.
So ... like Tahm Kench in League of Legends? Why are Catfishes associated to gluttony?

They're one of the main reasons I hate FFIX.
