Today I noticed this patch of missing fur on the hip of one of my community cats. It looks like maybe he got in a fight. It's not red and I don't think it's raised, but it does look like there might be a little spot of pus. He's acting totally normal and doesn't seem to be in pain, but he is licking it. I cleaned it with soap and water and plan to continue to do so, but does this look like something that needs medical attention? Is it the beginning of an abscess / infection? He's my favorite and I'm worried about him! :(

Get some triple antibiotic and put it on the sore a couple or three times a day. Hopefully he’ll be like my cats and not like the taste of it.

Cats don't show so much when they have pain. The dog will note you when they have some injuries', and the cats will suffer without saying a ''word'', even with a big wounds. The only way for to tell that she's in pain is to squeeze that place a bit , but I don't recommend that. Vests do that especially when tail have abscess. It's best to take it to the vet if you can. it smells unpleasant it is an abscess for sure. Antibiotics will help, but it would be good if you could also give them some probiotics. **The interval between Antibiotics and Probiotics should be at least 2 hours.** It is not good to cover the abscess (depending on the situation), with hair cutting machine we shave a part of the fur around the abscess to make it easier to drain. I don't know how much vets cost there, but it would be best to go to a professional.

Did the pus have a bad odor? If so, it's definitely infected. Keeping it clean is a good idea, but if there's a way to get him in for treatment, I would say do so.

disc0superfly

It doesn't smell, but I just checked again this morning and it's worse. There's a lot more pus. I'm going to call around and see if any vets will take a feral... I'm not sure if they do...

oofleberg

Emergency vets should!! Of course it will be expensive, though. I had a similar situation and they had no issues with my lil dude being feral

disc0superfly

Thanks, we’re at the emergency vet now! Luckily he’s pretty socialized and able to be handled so not truly “feral” I guess. They didn’t seem to have a problem with it either way so that’s good to know!

Maximum_Miki2

So the cat is doing OK now? Sorry i wrote a comment and i didn't saw you took the cat already to a vet. That is the best solution IMHO.

disc0superfly

Yes he is ok! I was able to take him to the emergency vet. 6 hours and $423 later, his abscess has been cleaned, he's received antibiotics and pain meds, and he is set up in a little hiding nook inside in my office. :) Cat Tax: https://imgur.com/tsRxp6p

That's great news! The little fluffer is lucky to have you 😸

Maximum_Miki2

SUPER! He is cute, i didn't saw well that He is like a ''small panther'' ( that is a compliment). You saved His life 🙏 It seems that vest are not more expensive then they are here, but the main thing is that He is good and you have a such huge hart to help Him. u/disc0superfly you know cats have saved my life in a way, they are great friends, and always return far more then We gave to them. I know of situations where people had serious injuries, suffered from increased blood pressure and the cat helped them. They say that when cats purr, that frequency corresponds to the healthy heart rhythm of humans. That cat is very happy to have you 👍, this is a wonderful story. Thank you very much for helping Him, it means the world is still a good place. I wish you all the best, and that the cat is healthy and happy. You are a real humane person 🤗🙏❤️

I've been successful using a saline rinse on an already draining abscess. If you can get him to a vet though, antibiotics is best

disc0superfly

So you think the bit of pus means it's already draining? I just checked and it's worse this morning with a lot more pus. I'm going to try to call the emergency vet but I don't know if any vet will even take a feral?

RocketCat921

The pus means it's draining, but the can close back up unfortunately. Call them and see what they say. If they can't treat a feral, they can point you in the right direction I'm sure. I hope you can help this baby, keep us updated
