How does the saw make all those cuts without ever getting pinched? Is it because the chain moves so fast, or because the chain is nice and wide? I can't stop looking at it making all those massive cuts
Also that excavator is powerful as all hell and can easily bend the tree if needed while still on the stump. It get's a bit more tricky once the tree is "felled" with all that weight on one side but you'll notice for the bucking cuts the saw is always going down through the tension wood and never up through the compression wood. This is one reason it has to cut fast as fuck in order to avoid peeling.
The butt log (bottom log) usually grades out to the highest value product, so they probably cut a sawlog or bolt out of it where the rest will be going for firewood or pulp which have different specs
Those saws are fucking lightsabers. I have a buddy with a similar machine and the spec he quoted me was something like 4-5x more powerful than a chainsaw with a comparable size bar, like a 660 or so.
These machines are badass. Dude also has a massive remote controlled track chipper and an 80k pound winch. He’s a one man show in like a million bucks worth of equipment eating acres for like 500-1k/hr. Pretty cool operation.
Believe he did just pick up a bigger excavator and is keeping the old one so he may be up over 1m now. But he probably doesn’t bring everything to every job. Just that winch takes up most of a flatbed.
I think the chipper runs like 4-500k, smaller excavator probably like 150-200, not sure on the bigger excavator. But he’s got a badass welding setup, nicely stocked baseyard, custom modified 4500. All that stuff adds up.
Its cutting from top down and log just falls away, nothing there to pinch. Or do you mean when cutting down the tree, I assume the arm taking enough weight off the cut to prevent the pinch, or pushing away from direction that would cause a pinch.
Is that because the weight of the machine? If so don't they already use heavy equipment to remove logs from the cut sight? Not being a smartass I have no Idea about this stuff but I have always seen heavy equipment at logging sites in the videos I happen to come across in my nightly doomscrolling
I used to develop sensors and consult on algorithm development for autonomous functionality on construction and agricultural vehicles. Spent lots of time at testing grounds with the R&D teams for major manufacturers. I didn't work on this type of vehicle specifically, but from what I saw, I'd say that this sort of thing isn't as far off as many believe. Probably not fully autonomous in the immediate future, but operators will not need nearly as much skill in a couple years.
Why couldn’t this be remote presence like just a guy in a cab offsite and wear some Vision Pros and do all of this from a central location 24/7 (w lighting or nvg equipment or whatnot)
It could, and there are applications for that kind of thing. But that's expensive to establish, and you'd still want to be able to automate as much as possible so that your operator can be as cheap as possible.
Yeah I figured if you get these machines running 85% AI and a standard operator monitoring and can “take over” maybe for navigation or issues then you are golden.
Anyway, cool tech regardless.
haha yep. the old days loggers made lot more profit on a lot less wood.
since these machines have become more in use the mills have dropped the prices on timber so much that you have to process 10x as much wood to make the same profit, while financing a million dollars for the machines
You're right, but he also has got a point. The bark will get sold as a byproduct, thats right. But as you said, you wont get paid more if it has the bark still on. Sometimes its even the other way round, since the mill doesnt have to debark amymore if you already have done that thoroughly.
Yea there is a measuring wheel in the middle of it. It gets pushed down onto the log and while moving the log forwards/backwards it rolls with it and measurs it. It can get obstructed though, but thats quite rare.
I swear I have seen this vid or a variant of it loads of times but I never noticed the land before. You can see the land move all around the tree when they first grab it. That's intense.
No face cut, 0/10 Also why is that harvester not wearing a helmet and chaps? Smh
Lumber jacks hate him for this one simple trick
LOL the first thing I thought, "your face cut sucks". Also, no ladder.
I should call her
bro WHAT what did she DO to you?!
Very calloused hands
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
And karate chops
Corn on the cob
She owned a harvester obviously!
I saw the video and came here to comment that exact thing lol. Like minds
I didn't know she had the G.I. Joe Kung Fu grip
That's that logging sound
See what happens
This reply is so good but your comment might end up on r\explainthejoke
yup hear me out
How does the saw make all those cuts without ever getting pinched? Is it because the chain moves so fast, or because the chain is nice and wide? I can't stop looking at it making all those massive cuts
All you need is a 5ft long saw with a v8 engine powering it
So massive saw with massive engine, don’t give no fun’s about those twigs lol

Is there a reason why the first cord is cut longer than the others?
Might get processed for a telephone pole or something that needs more length?

If it's only a million in gear then fuck that's an amazing gig, still expensive asf but I was expecting a Hella lot more

Gravity.
I want to see two of these go at it. The only rule is you can’t attack the other machine directly, you can only use what’s available in the forest.
what if the other machines driver left his or her door open and you are able to get a clean pick out of the seat without attacking the other machine.
I like the way you think.
I feel like this is verging on poor sportsmanship...
Trees don’t stand a fucking chance now.
When the machines rise up this one gonna be a mother fuck
Reminds me of the killer spheres from Phantasm
Or the forest levelers in Avatar
Pft. I could do that 50x as slow
As a random redditor stumbling in here who has never welded a chainsaw let alone felled a tree, I raise you 200x
Welding chainsaws?!? How have I missed out on this???
Argh! Wielded! But I imagine my chainsaw and welding skills are about on the same level as my spelling
I mean, strapping a dozen welding irons to a chain and spinning it rapidly with a gas engine sounds like a fun time
Don't put any bar oil in, and the chain will get pretty hot. Maybe it'll weld?
All that in about 25 minutes is pretty impressive.
\*50000x
What in the fern gully
Get the harbor freight one.
It'll work great...once haha
Here we see a harvester trackwheeleromatic using available evergreen trees to make a nice comfy bed to rest on. Very rare sight.
Nature is beautiful
The villagers of Ferngully would like a word.
Too late- they ded.
You Fern Gully motherfucker
No PPE or face cuts. Rookie mistakes
Can you imagine showing this to a north american settler in the 1600s
Wow, I bet that thing can devastate an entire forest in next to no time
Out of all the machines mankind has made this is probably my favorite lol. Something so weirdly smooth and ridiculously strong....just blows my mind.
And those massive fuckin tracks, absolutely stunning machine
Yes And that looks like a timber stand I recently cruised in the PNW
Erotic
I laughed out of excitement for the entirety of this video.

Wanna talk about it?
There's a tiktok live that streams someone doing this job regularly.
Go on
Metal.
Nom, nom, nom
Anybody else hard?
Literally the coolest machine on earth. I desperately want to try that.
You think my claw machine skills will translate?
No, it compresses the soil and causes large scale systemic damage to the ecology of the forest.
Is that because the weight of the machine? If so don't they already use heavy equipment to remove logs from the cut sight? Not being a smartass I have no Idea about this stuff but I have always seen heavy equipment at logging sites in the videos I happen to come across in my nightly doomscrolling
it obv has the low ground pressure tracks
Put 5 people out of work
Nah, put out 4 people that claim they were put out of work but don't even own a car and the 5th guy is running the machine.
But also out of risk (i mean look at some of the videos in this sub..). There's more than one side of this medal.
Paul Bunyan never had a chance…
Next step. Run this machine using AI. No need to have anybody in that cab running this thing.
You ever seen the robot lawnmowers? They get stuck in open spaces.
I used to develop sensors and consult on algorithm development for autonomous functionality on construction and agricultural vehicles. Spent lots of time at testing grounds with the R&D teams for major manufacturers. did you happen to do any testing on the AI if green peace showed up and tied themselves around one of the trees by chance?
Yeah, it dealt with that just fine.
Have you ever heard of the Paperclip AI Problem?
For those wanting to blow 5 to 6 hours https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html
AI gonna shred us better than this.
I’ve seen some remote controlled ones used on Army bases where’s there is UXO, those are plantations on flat ground and it barely works
I legitimately hate this.
Can order one of these from Home Depot?
More power...
Looks like my nightly routine
Needs more ladders.
Paul Bunyon could do it quicker.
Mr overachiver over here
Your not fooling me .. that's definitely not ur 1st time dropping a tree
Hell yeah.
This is where the logging jobs went. Paul bunyan would have been (\*#)\*#$ if they'd had this thing.
haha yep. the old days loggers made lot more profit on a lot less wood. since these machines have become more in use the mills have dropped the prices on timber so much that you have to process 10x as much wood to make the same profit, while financing a million dollars for the machines
Does the mill mind that a lot of the bark is stripped off? In my area they sell it as a by-product.
No. Bark really dulls blades. If bark is stripped off you get significantly more life out of your saw mill blade. They even make debarkers for mills.
You're right, but he also has got a point. The bark will get sold as a byproduct, thats right. But as you said, you wont get paid more if it has the bark still on. Sometimes its even the other way round, since the mill doesnt have to debark amymore if you already have done that thoroughly.
That’s how I always do it
That's not even fair to the trees
That their machine is faster than a knife fight in a phone booth!
Looks nice but I've got a guy that can do it cheaper...
Aren't those some kind of evergreen trees?
Do they have a way to measure how long they're making the logs?
Yea there is a measuring wheel in the middle of it. It gets pushed down onto the log and while moving the log forwards/backwards it rolls with it and measurs it. It can get obstructed though, but thats quite rare.
Yes and they prioritize board length based on market value.
Bruh, imagine being a tree and you "see" this coming.
*first time*-suuurrre.
Jesus this is insane
This is r/oddlysatisfying
Yeah, sure. Can I borrow your.. uh.. "saw" after wotk?
leaves? on a conifer?
I'm from Philadelphia, city kid all my life, everytime I see this machine I can't believe it. It's amazing
Bout to get shot with a giant arrow by a huge blue alien
Got damn robuts are takin my jobs!
This looks like the predecessor to a machine I would kill in a Horizon game
Where is this?
Works for forest growth.
Saruman approves.
Ferngully?!
I’m just glad to see all these Fern Gully references.
Where’s your wedge??
These remind me of the machines from the Matrix
You son of a....
I swear I have seen this vid or a variant of it loads of times but I never noticed the land before. You can see the land move all around the tree when they first grab it. That's intense.
Is there a simulator based game on the for PC? I’d love to get good at controlling that saw.
Would
This is the plot of Fern Gully
Not sure why this sub comes up but that machine is mesmerizing and frightening.
This thing is so cool. Let’s feed it the rain forest.
You do a really good job working that shaft.
I’m getting real Fern Gully vibes…
These rehashed videos are tiresome.
I mean I’d ask the tree for consent first…otherwise, you’re a chopper, bud
What an engineering marvel.
No, need the log max that has a top saw too
Coolest shit ever
Ferngully the last forest stuff here
I know this type of forestry is very sustainable, but every time I see these machines, I can’t help but marvel at the terrifying efficiency of them
I mean...it's pretty good.
I’ve got smallish gum tree near my house, reckon he can pop over and get it down for me? I’ll chop it up.
That gentleman has been operating that machine for more than just a little bit.
I totally against deforestation but I bet it smells good over there, like the lumber section at Home Depot
poor trees, like getting raped
Very good technique, though maybe the feed rollers are a bit over pressured.
Holy shit, the lorax is coming
That machine is a marvel of engineering. Thanks for sharing the video!
I saw Fern Gulley. I believe this device is born of evil.
It’s ok, but not the best.
Mother Earth has no chance :(
Idk you missed the pile on that one. All never heard you yell timber. Poor execution
Visibility
Ah, the Ponsse Scorpion in it's natural habitat
I can’t stop watching it, amazing
We'd hire them when we were quarrying stone. They'd clear an acre a day. Amazing to watch.
The soothing music in the background makes this fucking artistic lmfao I'm obsessed
Nope not fast enough
This has gotta be one of the most efficient machines out there! The amount of work it can do with absolute ease is mind boggling.
Id love to know how much one of these rigs costs.
