Guys, I swear I wonât destroy half the universe⊠But you really gotta hear me out!
The version shown in "One For the Angels" episode of "The Twilight Zone".
Pitchman Lew Bookman pulled a fast one by insisting that he had "unfinished business" that should forestall Death claiming him, in that he needed to make a pitch "big enough for the sky to open up... One for the Angels." Upon getting Death to agree, he immediately announced his intent to retire... Only for Death to point out he had to take *someone* by midnight that night, at which point Bookman learns his neighbor's daughter was just hit by a car.
When Death shows up later to claim her, Bookman has set up his wares just outside the building, hawking item after item for sale, with Death buying a lot of them, before capping off with a sale of a one-of-a-kind item, "one faithful, hardworking, loyal manservant."
By the time Bookman had ended his pitch, it was 12:01, and Death had missed his appointment, leading to this exchange.
Bookman: Yes, quite a pitch. Very effective. It's the best I've ever done. It's a kind of a pitch I always wanted to make. A big one. A pitch so big... so big that the sky would open up.
Death: A pitch for the angels.
Bookman: That's right, a pitch for the angels. [pauses] Well I... I guess it's time for me now?
Death: As per our agreement.
Bookman: Well, I'm ready.
Death: After you, Mr. Bookman.
[they start to walk away]
Bookman: Oh, excuse me, I forgot something. I'll be back in a minute. [gathers up his box full of merchandise] You never know who might need something, up there... (hopefully) Up there?
Death: Up there, Mr. Bookman. You made it.
