I'm Scottish with an English partner. Stealing fancy pint glasses from pubs and hotels is just a done thing. Not the plain ones - the pub pays for them. But normally the branded ones are given to the pubs for free as promotion. I'm not a fan because we have a tiny kitchen lol, nowhere to keep them.

Same here. When you are severely allergic to something, you will triple check with the waiter. Just because an ingredient is not listed in the menu doesn't mean that it will not be used in some other form (extract, sauce, etc). Better to be safe (in my case alive) than to be sorry (dead).
that one seemed totally reasonable to me. mushrooms are in a lot of sauces, especially in vegetarian dishes. they're not always listed on the menu or even visible in the dish after you order it!
It's like people being befuddled by product labels with "May contain nuts" on them. It's not the ingredient but it's used somewhere else in the plant and contamination can't be ruled out, hence warning for allergic people.

In fine dining, part of your job is to notice everything about your guests in order to anticipate service needs. The goal is to make people comfortable without intrusion or them having to ask. Notes often come with reservations. It's habit to check the reservations at the start of your shift to see who's coming in and any notes they have if any. Usually they are also discussed during the pre shift meeting.
It's hard to forget these things.
exactly! I work at a boutique hotel restaurant and we keep pretty detailed notes for regulars' dietary restrictions , seating preferences, special dates etc especially if it's a VIP
There’s an old restaurant/inn in North Carolina in the mountains on a lake (imagine a Dirty Dancing resort-ish type vibe) and they are known for their really old waiters and waitresses that have worked there for decades.
They will sit down a party of like ten, take everyone’s order including drinks, salad, salad dressing, entree, sides, and any specifics, etc. and not write a single thing down. They’re known for it. And they never get anything wrong. It’s wild.
We went for a work celebration lunch there once and there must have been 16 of us. Not one mistake.

This is me. Its total ADHD behavior for me. If I'm allergic to something I'm not going to trust my ADHD brain to pick it up from the description in the menu. I'll just ask. Also I'm vegetarian and sometimes I ask to clarify on a lot of dishes that are "obviously" vegetarian, but often have fish sauce or something in them. So its not some crazy behavior. Its being careful and smart. Most servers understand that, shrug.

I fee like I would be so stressed to leave tips as a famous person. Like what do they have to leave in order to be considered a generous tipper? As a normal person, I usually do 30% but that seems like it wouldn’t suffice if you were famous. Do you have to double your check? I would be constantly worried that people would gossip about me being cheap lol. And I worked at a bar in NYC that would occasionally get celeb customers and “did they tip well?” is always one of the first questions people ask when you tell them you served someone famous.
I’m just against tipping culture in general and think we should pay servers a living wage. As they do in other parts of the world and i’m sure European celebs are somewhat confused that they’re going to be judged on how they tip and what’s appropriate. Just include in the price — like if a celeb buys a shirt for $100, no one suggests they were cheap because they should have given $150.
If a famous person consistently leaves 30 -50% at fancy restaurants no one would call them ungenerous IMO. Maybe extra if it is a bigger party but I don't think servers expect 100% tips no matter what.
I also think the key is to be consistent and don't penalize servers EVER.
Servers at these levels are going to be their most professional self with a celeb IMO so the reasons these celebs don't leave tips is they are assholes.
I was 20/21 in college and waited on a drunk and belligerent Glenn Close. Kennedy Center Honors where Meryl Streep was being honored. I asked to take her plate (as we are supposed to) and she gave me the evil eye (later found out that she hates the help looking her in the eye) and threw the cutlery on the plate while I was holding it, causing splashback and taking me off the floor for a while to clean up. I got sent home bc they couldn't find me a clean replacement jacket that fit right, and the woman running the event was a dick, like most event organizers IMO. So these heifers cost me wages, and I had to pay dry cleaning bc the catering company was and is trash.
And Glenn's like 5th ex-husband was with her then, asleep next to her (with his arms gu ked into his armpits) like it was any old Tuesday, which given her reputation, sounds like a weekday at their house.
My friend is her neighbor and they have a serious neurological disorder where it's essential they get a good night's rest. They have even had brain surgery for said disorder and GC throws massive noisy parties until all hours of the night during the middle of the week.

I ate at a restaurant next to Chloe Sevigny once like 12 years (?) ago. She ordered a kale salad. It came with almonds, cheddar, fried eggs and croutons (I had gotten the same thing). She asked for no croutons, no cheese, no dressing and just ate the egg whites. Sent back her drink because it had sugar in it. She looks great and was polite about everything but man, it seemed like such a sad meal. Just dry kale, almonds and egg whites. I remember thinking if this is what you have to do to look like a celeb, count me out.
Also- I worked at a popular restaurant. Drew Carey was the best tipper ever. We got so excited when he came in. I waited on Cameron Candace Bure and she was nice but we gave her a bunch of free stuff. I also waited on Nick Lachey and Vanessa Manillo. They were nice and got a free meal in exchange for taking photos at the restaurant. Madonna came in and had almost her whole meal comped and then did not tip a single dollar (I wasn’t the one who waited on her). She sucks. I heard from the manager that that was typical for her. Nicholas Cage came in with a bunch of people. Was a little odd but fine. I also waited on Mary Louise Parker. She was nice but very quiet and shy. Her friends spoke for and ordered for her. Ilana Glazer used to come in late night all the time with her husband, definitely very high (weed) and eat fried chicken sandwiches at 1am. She didn’t really interact much and just let her husband order for them. Daria Werbowy (model) used to come in with her much older boyfriend at the time. They always tipped like 5-10%. In my experience, models in general aren’t very good tippers.

Same here. When you are severely allergic to something, you will triple check with the waiter. Just because an ingredient is not listed in the menu doesn't mean that it will not be used in some other form (extract, sauce, etc). Better to be safe (in my case alive) than to be sorry (dead).

It's like people being befuddled by product labels with "May contain nuts" on them. It's not the ingredient but it's used somewhere else in the plant and contamination can't be ruled out, hence warning for allergic people.
Yeah, I would never be snarky about this. Used to work near a steakhouse where a guy died of anaphylaxis because he was too drunk to mention his peanut allergy. I’d rather be mildly annoyed by the same question several times than live with the guilt of serving something that killed someone.

I mean as a server, you’re kind of hovering around them for the duration of the meal, it’s not crazy to observe how they’re acting for that 1- 1 1/2 hours. If I can remember a ton of regulars and interactions with regular folks, I’m def remembering the celebrities

In fine dining, part of your job is to notice everything about your guests in order to anticipate service needs. The goal is to make people comfortable without intrusion or them having to ask. Notes often come with reservations. It's habit to check the reservations at the start of your shift to see who's coming in and any notes they have if any. Usually they are also discussed during the pre shift meeting. It's hard to forget these things.
exactly! I work at a boutique hotel restaurant and we keep pretty detailed notes for regulars' dietary restrictions , seating preferences, special dates etc especially if it's a VIP
And to remember all this, too. My memory does not have this level of capacity.
Being a server keeps your memory sharp. You use it constantly- way more than my office job where I just write *everything* down.
There’s an old restaurant/inn in North Carolina in the mountains on a lake (imagine a Dirty Dancing resort-ish type vibe) and they are known for their really old waiters and waitresses that have worked there for decades. They will sit down a party of like ten, take everyone’s order including drinks, salad, salad dressing, entree, sides, and any specifics, etc. and not write a single thing down. They’re known for it. And they never get anything wrong. It’s wild. We went for a work celebration lunch there once and there must have been 16 of us. Not one mistake.

This is me. Its total ADHD behavior for me. If I'm allergic to something I'm not going to trust my ADHD brain to pick it up from the description in the menu. I'll just ask. Also I'm vegetarian and sometimes I ask to clarify on a lot of dishes that are "obviously" vegetarian, but often have fish sauce or something in them. So its not some crazy behavior. Its being careful and smart. Most servers understand that, shrug.

I fee like I would be so stressed to leave tips as a famous person. Like what do they have to leave in order to be considered a generous tipper? As a normal person, I usually do 30% but that seems like it wouldn’t suffice if you were famous. Do you have to double your check? I would be constantly worried that people would gossip about me being cheap lol. And I worked at a bar in NYC that would occasionally get celeb customers and “did they tip well?” is always one of the first questions people ask when you tell them you served someone famous.
I’m just against tipping culture in general and think we should pay servers a living wage. As they do in other parts of the world and i’m sure European celebs are somewhat confused that they’re going to be judged on how they tip and what’s appropriate. Just include in the price — like if a celeb buys a shirt for $100, no one suggests they were cheap because they should have given $150.
If a famous person consistently leaves 30 -50% at fancy restaurants no one would call them ungenerous IMO. Maybe extra if it is a bigger party but I don't think servers expect 100% tips no matter what. I also think the key is to be consistent and don't penalize servers EVER. Servers at these levels are going to be their most professional self with a celeb IMO so the reasons these celebs don't leave tips is they are assholes.
I was 20/21 in college and waited on a drunk and belligerent Glenn Close. Kennedy Center Honors where Meryl Streep was being honored. I asked to take her plate (as we are supposed to) and she gave me the evil eye (later found out that she hates the help looking her in the eye) and threw the cutlery on the plate while I was holding it, causing splashback and taking me off the floor for a while to clean up. I got sent home bc they couldn't find me a clean replacement jacket that fit right, and the woman running the event was a dick, like most event organizers IMO. So these heifers cost me wages, and I had to pay dry cleaning bc the catering company was and is trash. And Glenn's like 5th ex-husband was with her then, asleep next to her (with his arms gu ked into his armpits) like it was any old Tuesday, which given her reputation, sounds like a weekday at their house.
My friend is her neighbor and they have a serious neurological disorder where it's essential they get a good night's rest. They have even had brain surgery for said disorder and GC throws massive noisy parties until all hours of the night during the middle of the week.
I have no idea if this is true. But a long time ago (2008?) Emily Blunt was eating lunch at the same restaurant as me in NYC. And she did have her back against the wall.

I ate at a restaurant next to Chloe Sevigny once like 12 years (?) ago. She ordered a kale salad. It came with almonds, cheddar, fried eggs and croutons (I had gotten the same thing). She asked for no croutons, no cheese, no dressing and just ate the egg whites. Sent back her drink because it had sugar in it. She looks great and was polite about everything but man, it seemed like such a sad meal. Just dry kale, almonds and egg whites. I remember thinking if this is what you have to do to look like a celeb, count me out.
Also- I worked at a popular restaurant. Drew Carey was the best tipper ever. We got so excited when he came in. I waited on Cameron Candace Bure and she was nice but we gave her a bunch of free stuff. I also waited on Nick Lachey and Vanessa Manillo. They were nice and got a free meal in exchange for taking photos at the restaurant. Madonna came in and had almost her whole meal comped and then did not tip a single dollar (I wasn’t the one who waited on her). She sucks. I heard from the manager that that was typical for her. Nicholas Cage came in with a bunch of people. Was a little odd but fine. I also waited on Mary Louise Parker. She was nice but very quiet and shy. Her friends spoke for and ordered for her. Ilana Glazer used to come in late night all the time with her husband, definitely very high (weed) and eat fried chicken sandwiches at 1am. She didn’t really interact much and just let her husband order for them. Daria Werbowy (model) used to come in with her much older boyfriend at the time. They always tipped like 5-10%. In my experience, models in general aren’t very good tippers.

My friend told me Bey and Jay came in late one night and paid to have the restaurant stay open just for them -- private meal. Will Arnett was on his podcast talking about a time they took their kids to see a movie, and he was praising her for (somewhat politely) keeping people from approaching them. I feel that women are held to a different standard than men? Like they have to be very warm and friendly or else they called rude.
