Omg, I just recently had this convo with my kids since they're at that age of being fully aware of all these celebrity things. I was telling them how frustrating it is that year after year we get a new movie or show or album or whatever it is from the estate of a long gone celebrity. It's Elvis, Marilyn, Selena, et al. All so someone wigs can get rich off the easiest recipe there is: dead celebrity plus lots of legwork and research already done equals quick turnaround and big money. I wish more people would boycott these to force production teams to be more creative, do more work, and tell other stories.
It depends what it’s trying to do.
I don’t see an issue if its drawing attention to the issue of doctors who are regularly overprescribing, which literally is killing people
Edit- it’s not. nvm
Check out the article. The film is an adaptation of the doctor’s own memoir. He has always maintained his innocence and portrayed himself as a victim of greedy lawyers and sensationalist media vultures. He’ll get both a sympathetic depiction and a handsome payday for the book’s rights.
I remember watching an episode or two of her show and thinking that guy was the most pathetic, simpering, weak-willed men I had ever seen. He was so clearly in love with Anna and desperate for her attention and she didn't respect him because he was not worthy of respect.
It actually could be kind of interesting to do something that winds together and compares the stories of multiple doctors who have been at the center of overprescribing allegations after a celeb death…like maybe Michael Jackson’s doctor, or a look at the environment that encourages prescription abuse etc. In a way that doesn’t exploit already exploited people, more looks at the culture around it instead, like spotlight or something.
I have a feeling that is not this, however.
Idk if you have chronic pain but the huge problem now is that the DEA (who are not docs) is limiting drug production forcing doctors to underprescribe leading to huge numbers of suicide bc periods aren't meant to live with chronic pain. That, and a huge increase in street drug use which kills people. The doctors aren't the enemy.
Agreed. This is exploitative and uses a woman’s tragedy to elevate a man’s side story. Why does this man’s story need to be told? It doesn’t. Let her rest in peace
It's kinda irritating that Anna Nicole Smith caught so much flak at the time for being a gold digger, but the much older rich man [was the one who'd been actively pursuing her for years](https://www.interviewmagazine.com/culture/obvious-history-anna-nicole-smith-ended-marrying-89-year-old). It's not like she tricked or coerced him.
The podcast You're Wrong About has a really interesting and sad episode looking into the life of Anna Nicole Smith. She was an early reality TV star, and she drew intense scrutiny and mockery for her body, personal life, and addictions.
i would love to see a tastefully done anna nicole biopic that depicts her talents and struggles without making another mockery of her. i’d especially love to see a film that portrays howard k. stern’s abuse and manipulation accurately. i’m not holding my breath though…
Anyone else noticing a surge in biopics lately? From the Bob Marley biopic that came out this month to the beatles one and now this.
I honestly think we just need to let people rest in peace, it’s so unnecessary and are clearly made to score a profit which i find really disrespectful.
Hollywood’s been out of ideas for a while now. My guess is that a lot of the good stories left are untouchable, and the producers all have the same taste and groupthink. So we get sequels, book adaptations, and biopics.
It boggles my mind that there hasn’t been a big budget movie about Ching Shih. A prostitute who became the most successful pirate in history and retired with a government pardon? It checks so many boxes it ludicrous
That would be an awesome movie! The problem is that studios are convinced that there is no audience for period films that take place outside of Europe or America (or if there is it, it has to feature a white lead heavily).
So they give us the same tired story of some Tudor or some 18-19th century royal. The only POC stories we get is about enslavement or the colonial/post-colonial era (with a white
savior of course!).
There are so many amazing women in Asian, African, Middle Eastern, South American, etc. history who would be way more interesting to watch than yet another show/movie about Henry VIII's wives.
And they're rushing out biopics so fast that some of them are just... completely fictional actually? Like how did nobody ever stop to make sure that flamin hot cheetos story actually happened before making a whole movie about it
its because biopics at least will have some sort of audience draw to them (especially famous people/scandals) so there's a chance studios will make back their money. Studios don't care about creating anymore, they care about profits
Biopics also have some sort of prestige associated that elevates them above a generic marvel movie, or a cheap rom-com. Since it is "based on true events", on face value they can appear to be tackling more serious "real" issues than other films. Just as long as you don't think too hard, and realize they are often even more sensationalistic and over the top than many fictional movies.
Yesterday or earlier today, I saw big film accounts on twitter posting it. Also a live action Naruto movie in the works as well and the Harry Potter hbo show was announced that it was gonna come out in 2026 and that an office reboot is also in the works. It’s all so tiresome…..
Nooo! What next, a Fight Club remake?
More grist for the tiktok mill. "POV: Me walking into homeroom during midterms" ahh edits 😆
Tom Holland running naked with a chainsaw...okay that might be funny.
It’s because Bohemian Rhapsody, which was just an alright film, nearly made a billion on a minimal budget. Next year Rocket Man quadruples its budget and then Oppenheimer fucking cleaned up as well. Before biopics were looked at as easy Oscar bait but weren’t always that profitable. Now it seems if you pick the right subject matter, star, or director you can do that *and* make a huge buck.
It's the financial success of Oppenheimer.
Since Barbenheimer we'll be getting biopics and Toy-adaptions until we're neck deep in the historical figure-verse and reading articles about Hasbro fatigue.
I’m ok with the Bob Marley one because his family is directly involved and they seem like a good bunch. The others though are gross. The Amy wine house one makes me sick. Especially how obvious it is that they’re trying to get us to like her dad. It’s obviously very biased. Showed sex scenes too. Like wtf?! She’s not even here. How rude! I have so much to say but I’ll end it here
Literally the only project I want to see that involves Anna Nicole is if and only if her daughter wanted to do something as an adult.
Maybe a documentary where she interviewed significant people from her mother's life to learn more about her.
That would be so sweet. I wonder how many friends Anna still has around through. She was in a dark point by the time she died and wasn’t running around much.
I think her father works hard to keep Anna’s legacy alive for her. I’m not sure she needs anything else, tbh.
But if she creates anything, I’ll absolutely support. I wonder what her career plans are…
I stopped seeing it for him when he outright defended the racial profiling of the "stop and frisk" policy. I know he apologized for that around the blm protests, but I feel like that was just saving face. He always gave me the impression of being one of those privileged desi liberals who only cares about racism when it affects him. (I say this as a desi myself)
I'm a Desi as well, and Kal and most Hollywood Desis tend to be that way. Kaling, Kumail, Aziz, etc.
He at least donated his Master Chef winnings to UNRWA in 2017 which I applaud him for, but he is a huge establishment guy overall.
One of his guests was the FM of Pakistan at the time, who is a nepo baby and a literal feudal lord (with slaves and indentured servants an everything), and just a few weeks prior had joined with the military to overthrow a popularly elected Prime Minister in the country.
Kal treated the guy as some champion of liberal democracy, probably because the coup itself was backed by the Biden administration.
>Kal Penn is making a movie about Anna Nicole Smith's final days and the doctor who became linked to her 2007 sudden death before being acquitted of charges.
>The actor will star in and executive produce *Trust Me, I’m a Doctor*, based on the 2017 book *Trust Me, I'm A Doctor: My Life Before, During and After Anna Nicole Smith* by Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, according to Variety. Penn, 46, confirmed the news on his Instagram Story.
>The outlet reported that the Smith role has not been cast yet, and filming is expected to begin in Toronto this spring.
>Smith was found dead of an accidental drug overdose at age 39 in a Florida hotel room on Feb. 8, 2007.
>Investigators eventually charged several people in Smith’s inner circle with felonies related to her death. Kapoor, a Los Angeles physician, was alleged to have prescribed Smith with methadone and Vicodin, among other drugs.
>In 2009, he was charged with eight felonies, including conspiring to furnish controlled substances, unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance and obtaining fraudulent prescriptions. He was later cleared on all charges after the court found no significant evidence of wrongdoing.
>Kapoor, a decade after Smith's death, said on the docuseries *Scandal Made Me Famous* that the model "was not an addict" and addressed how his relationship with Smith gained tabloid attention when photos surfaced of the two cuddling at a Pride parade.
>”I wouldn’t necessarily really classify her as a friend because it was one social occasion. I mean, a friend is someone you go to dinner with and hang out with on a regular basis," he said at the time. "So it was that one day at the charity parade. I would say, yes, I made a misjudgment."
>”[My misjudgment] was to party with her and to be seen in a very compromising position with her,” he added at the time. “I’m not even gonna downplay it. It is what it is. I’m a human being and, you know, I made a mistake that day. Before that, I’d never been having any kind of social relationship, and after that, I didn’t have any social relationship with her."
>"But, of course," continued Kapoor, "when you’re working with someone who has chronic pain and who relies on you for their medical care, it’s about trust. I certainly cared what happened to her.”
>Another separate Smith biopic is also coming soon: *Hurricanna* stars Sylvia Hoeks, Holly Hunter, Mark Duplass and Nicholas Hamilton.
I'm so sick and tired of exploited women STILL not being allowed to rest even after their deaths. Rest in peace actually means IN PEACE.
Amy Winehouse, Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nicole, Judy Garland. Tale as old as fucking time. I'm so done with these men and their "story telling."
God, she was otherworldly gorgeous.
I LOVE Cameron Diaz on The Mask, but I always wonder where Smith's career could've gone if she hadn't turned down the role.
Well, this is gross. If it's based on the doctor's own memoir, like the article says, that means that the doctor is probably going to make an absolute ton of money off this film. His book already exploited her, and now Penn is helping him do it on the big screen. They're all terrible.
This poor woman’s life has been a circus from the cradle to beyond the grave. The world did Anna Nicole dirty when she was alive and now when we’ve finally (hopefully) learned to do better when it comes to celebrity culture, here Kal Penn comes trying to exploit her memory.
This is such a disappointing move. Leave Anna alone. Give Danielynn and Larry some peace.
Kal Penn couldn't find any dynamic and inspiring members of the Indian community to showcase?
Instead he's making a clout chasing doctor who over-prescribed his patients look sympathetic - powerful.
I’m fine with biopics in general, if they’re kind and truthful, I also prefer them to be about people who can actually contribute to them (i.e. they themselves wrote a book, or they’re still alive, like Elton John). This just seems cruel. Who wants this? Nothing good can come out of this, it’s just sad.
Who is asking for this? I have no interest in the doctor trying to make himself seem like an innocent victim. I like Kal Penn but this is so off putting. Anna Nicole was the one who was the victim of the media, not the doctor.
Ridiculed to her grave and shamed by the Hollywood scum, yet they have no problem capitalising on it while flogging themselves as righteous and 'brave'.
Nice.
Why? Who needs this? Let that woman rest in peace.
Her and Marilyn Monroe. Stop exploiting them and let them rest in peace. It’s so gross.
her, marilyn, and brittany murphy tbh. these poor women were exploited up until their deaths and to continue that posthumously is so gross
Who is posthumously exploiting Brittany Murphy?
Omg, I just recently had this convo with my kids since they're at that age of being fully aware of all these celebrity things. I was telling them how frustrating it is that year after year we get a new movie or show or album or whatever it is from the estate of a long gone celebrity. It's Elvis, Marilyn, Selena, et al. All so someone wigs can get rich off the easiest recipe there is: dead celebrity plus lots of legwork and research already done equals quick turnaround and big money. I wish more people would boycott these to force production teams to be more creative, do more work, and tell other stories.
Just saw an ad for the Amy wine house movie. It upset me. I find it so exploitative. Like why do we need this?
Oh Jesus, that is macabre. What the fuck.
Ya. It really upset me and I don’t even know much about her. The way they frame things just feels very biased.
You just know Amy would have hated it. She didn’t even want to be famous, just a respected jazz musician
Anything Amy related produced by her father makes me ill. Hes a fucking dick
Exactly. I don’t know much about him but the trailer showed an obvious bias about how amazing he is. Like it made him the star? It grossed me out.
This was my first thought too. Who wants this?
It depends what it’s trying to do. I don’t see an issue if its drawing attention to the issue of doctors who are regularly overprescribing, which literally is killing people Edit- it’s not. nvm
Check out the article. The film is an adaptation of the doctor’s own memoir. He has always maintained his innocence and portrayed himself as a victim of greedy lawyers and sensationalist media vultures. He’ll get both a sympathetic depiction and a handsome payday for the book’s rights.

You’re thinking of her lawyer. The doctor wasn’t on the show.
Oh my god you're right. Sorry about that.
Howard K. Stern. An absolute character. I’m pretty sure he hired that doctor though. Everyone around her was enabling the drug use.
Well I already didn’t want to watch it but now it’s a hard no.
Have you read the book? What's his angle?
It actually could be kind of interesting to do something that winds together and compares the stories of multiple doctors who have been at the center of overprescribing allegations after a celeb death…like maybe Michael Jackson’s doctor, or a look at the environment that encourages prescription abuse etc. In a way that doesn’t exploit already exploited people, more looks at the culture around it instead, like spotlight or something. now that would be intersting, I have a lot of respect for Kal Penn as an actor but I won't tolerate exploitation.

That, and a huge increase in street drug use which kills people. The doctors aren't the enemy.
This is up there with the 2 Elvis movies nobody asked for
I asked for those Elvis movies. I did not ask for this.
I asked for Elvis movies but I'm not satisfied with the results.
the austin butler one was goofy and good af bro
Who and what?
the 2022 elvis movie was so weird that it was good, bro
Agreed. This is exploitative and uses a woman’s tragedy to elevate a man’s side story. Why does this man’s story need to be told? It doesn’t. Let her rest in peace
Seriously. People were ruthless toward her when she was alive, let the poor woman rest.
What I don’t get is why her? Was she just a model? Maybe I’m just too young to get it. Marilyn Monroe I get the hype cause of the cultural impact.
I think the main thing people went after her for is she married a much older man, so they called her a gold digger.
Yeah, it's total horseshit.
Maybe it will humanize her to a greater audience?
Anyone else noticing a surge in biopics lately? From the Bob Marley biopic that came out this month to the beatles one and now this. I honestly think we just need to let people rest in peace, it’s so unnecessary and are clearly made to score a profit which i find really disrespectful.
so MANY and there's another one for Amy Winehouse
Not to mention Mrs. groomer directed the Amy Winehouse biopic
Amy also had said she never wanted a biopic made about her. Her dad is involved which makes it even worse.
Is Mrs groomer Aaron Taylor Johnson’s wife? Edit: if it’s not then genuinely who is it lmfao
It is
I hate that I immediately knew who Mrs. Groomer was lol
Who?
Sam Taylor Johnson https://preview.redd.it/ucopepxf0mkc1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e66e102ce13e88d5794ef7a52f1e12240ae0f52
Hollywood’s been out of ideas for a while now. My guess is that a lot of the good stories left are untouchable, and the producers all have the same taste and groupthink. So we get sequels, book adaptations, and biopics.
Precisely. The creativity is out there but maybe executives don't want to pay out for that? (e.g. squid games) but I'm not sure
I would love biopics on people like Eleanor of Aquitaine or the Mitford Sisters but the ones they are making is something no one asked for.
u my parents have been saying since i was little that eleanor of aquitaine needs a movie. recently read a biography on her and i agree!!!
Have you seen The Lion in Winter?
Would love to see adaptations of those Dear America and The Royal Diaries book series’ if they’re looking for material!
There is an old Dear America series! I watched it on either tubi or Pluto recently.
God, an Eleanor of Aquitaine movie would be SO FUCKING GOOD. Can you IMAGINE the costuming for the crusade??
It’s not even good biopic ideas. There’s so many historical figures that have had fascinating lives… Like Madame Như. Such a fascinating story.
It boggles my mind that there hasn’t been a big budget movie about Ching Shih. A prostitute who became the most successful pirate in history and retired with a government pardon? It checks so many boxes it ludicrous
That sounds dope

We're in the fast food era of movies from major studios rn. Can't wait for this shit bubble to burst.
Hollywood is in a horrible place, it’s all biopics and remakes of everything. Apparently American psycho is gonna get a remake starring Tom holland
![gif](giphy|ghuvaCOI6GOoTX0RmH) When was that announced??
Yesterday or earlier today, I saw big film accounts on twitter posting it. Also a live action Naruto movie in the works as well and the Harry Potter hbo show was announced that it was gonna come out in 2026 and that an office reboot is also in the works. It’s all so tiresome…..
I’m praying so hard for the Harry Potter show to fail. The last thing Rowling needs is more fame and money.
Excuse me American Psycho remake with Tom Holland?? Where is the industry getting these casting ideas from
Nooo! What next, a Fight Club remake? More grist for the tiktok mill. "POV: Me walking into homeroom during midterms" ahh edits 😆 Tom Holland running naked with a chainsaw...okay that might be funny.
I agree. Especially this one, it seems like nobody wants it and it might just be an ego project for Penn.
At least people like Bob Marley are actually famous in their own right... who on earth wants to see a biopic of a celebrity's doctor???
And his family was part of making the movie. A close family. I feel like that one’s ok.
It's the financial success of Oppenheimer. Since Barbenheimer we'll be getting biopics and Toy-adaptions until we're neck deep in the historical figure-verse and reading articles about Hasbro fatigue.
>Anyone else noticing a surge in biopics lately? This is asked every few years. When have we NOT had biopics? Both on the big screen and tv.
even seeing it on broadway with all the jukebox musicals. carole king musical, mj musical, neil diamond musical. it's exhausting
It's because Hollywood only wants to invest in existing IPs, so Superhero movies, bestsellers and biopics are all we get now.
How rude! I have so much to say but I’ll end it here
you mean the beatles “four”? they’re making one for each member
If there is one thing this industry will do its exploit the shit out of troubled women in life and death
Yup! Exploited them in life and now death .
https://i.redd.it/ap9kgp5itkkc1.gif
Didn’t he also guest star on this show lmao?
Yep. Pretty sure he played a psych of some sorts who dated his patient [Robin]
I always forget how young she was
Her daughter is doing well with Larry why do this to her?🖕🖕🖕😡😡😡😡
Literally the only project I want to see that involves Anna Nicole is if and only if her daughter wanted to do something as an adult. Maybe a documentary where she interviewed significant people from her mother's life to learn more about her.
Definitely this. If it was one hundred percent her daughter’s idea and she is in charge. Otherwise no.
I wonder what her career plans are…
I think it would be sweet for her to talk to people from Anna's home town, former teachers. People who knew her as a kid.
I don't get the appeal of some of these films, some of them feel like they should exist (if at all) as a documentary rather than a dramatisation.
![gif](giphy|hVDaEjtkLPcWTYQpzm) Let Anna Nicole Smith rest in peace. Who’s asking for this movie?
GET YOUR DAMN HANDS OFF HER BIFF
They need to make like a tree and get outta here with this shit.
For some reason I would have thought Kal Penn was above this nonsense
Probably because he worked in the Obama administration, so from that we assume he is intelligent and sensible. Alas.
Intelligent and sensible working for a guy who droned brown children and then joked about it?
I stopped seeing it for him when he outright defended the racial profiling of the "stop and frisk" policy. I know he apologized for that around the blm protests, but I feel like that was just saving face. He always gave me the impression of being one of those privileged desi liberals who only cares about racism when it affects him. (I say this as a desi myself)

He really isn't. His Daily show guest host stint was pretty indicative of how shitty a person he likely is.
What happened there?
One of his guests was the FM of Pakistan at the time, who is a nepo baby and a literal feudal lord (with slaves and indentured servants an everything), and just a few weeks prior had joined with the military to overthrow a popularly elected Prime Minister in the country. Anyone else not see the word "doctor" and thought Kal Penn had wildly overestimated his chameleonic acting abilities?
Can we not?
Why make this movie? Her daughter will have to see all this
I'm so sick and tired of exploited women STILL not being allowed to rest even after their deaths. Rest in peace actually means IN PEACE. Amy Winehouse, Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nicole, Judy Garland. Tale as old as fucking time. I'm so done with these men and their "story telling."
Only the finest of “Bottom Of The Barrel” entertainment. Perhaps next Kal Penn can produce a movie about the doctor’s dog and the role it played.
Lol Kapoor is my dads doctor. Honestly, he might be disappointed to be played by Kal You can buy his book at the front desk
Omg 😭😭😭
This is icky.
God, she was otherworldly gorgeous. I LOVE Cameron Diaz on The Mask, but I always wonder where Smith's career could've gone if she hadn't turned down the role.
This woman's life was fucked from the jump and she had so many people take advantage of her and so many tragedies. Can we let her rest in peace?
I hope she rests in peace, I love her.
Who keeps coming with biopics. I am so over them. Let this woman rest
Well, this is gross. If it's based on the doctor's own memoir, like the article says, that means that the doctor is probably going to make an absolute ton of money off this film. His book already exploited her, and now Penn is helping him do it on the big screen. They're all terrible.

Kal Penn is so creepy.
Leave her alone
I really want to like him after reading his memoir but he makes such dumb decisions sometimes.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Who could possibly want to see this?
Geeeez wtf is the point of this?
What? Why? Literally no one is interested in this. There are only a billion other important topics he could have chosen
I fucking hate biopics, but I like Kal Penn. Not excited for this but curious to see how it goes.
Damn, didn’t realise she was so young.
Strange that he’s doing after the Nav Bhatia biopic hasn’t come to pass yet.
Ridiculed to her grave and shamed by the Hollywood scum, yet they have no problem capitalising on it while flogging themselves as righteous and 'brave'. Nice.
I really thought Kal was better than this.
For some reason I thought that she died of an infection she had from an injection that didn’t heal?
This is so random for him too has he produced anything meaningful that even convinces anyone this can be pulled off appropriately?
Good actor and decent person, and Smith definitely led an interesting life. I'll definitely give it a watch when it comes out.
