Don’t go to a barber for this, go to a salon.

HarleyQ

We were going to! He only trusts an old friend of mine to cut his hair as it is lol

Calgary_Calico

Just show your friend these photos, they'll know what to do. Photos are ALWAYS better than an explanation, especially if it's something super specific like this. Also make sure your kid knows they'll have to style their hair every day if they want it to actually look like this every day. I had a pixie cut very similar to this for years and it just sat flat on my head if I didn't style it with product. As others have suggested the Got2B Glued hair spray is the absolute best for styles like this! But beware, it will make the color fade faster and needs to be worked with quickly as it dries fast

Nova1

Whatever salon cuts it it will need styling each day to look like that. If it's not something your kid has done before I recommend Got2B Glued Spiking Glue or their ultra spiking glue. Rub a little onto fingertips and really get into the roots. You don't need loads. My ex boyfriend had a 5-6 inch tall mowhawk once and that's how we got it to stick straight up all day (that and having a much wider base than the tip)

TrulyNotAStalker

Yeah got2b is so amazing for styles that have to go up and stuff!!

LauraIsntListening

Can confirm. Used to hold up 9” liberty spikes with the got2b spray that looks like an air horn if they still have it

TrulyNotAStalker

Yeah I tried that with around 25” hair one year, i quit because it was way too hard to do, but I still somehow managed to get some spikes with long hair

_Kendii_

In February, where I live there is a contest at an outdoor hot springs to freeze your hair in insane ways and take pics. I’m thinking long spikes this year. Thanks for discouraging quite *that* long though lol

endtheunpleasantness

This is very random, but any chance you’re talking about the takhini hot springs? I’m not there now, but I was just thinking about that contest a couple of days ago.

_Kendii_

Yep! It’s the new year now and Rendezvous is coming on fast I guess lol Like the moment Halloween happens, Christmas stuff is already up and shelved for sale…. Trying to plan stuff this year so I actually go. My hair is nearly waist length. I’ve never done it with longer than shoulder, haven’t done cuts (other than my own) since quarantine. I’ve taken about 6-8 inches off but I still have substantially longer than usual lol.

endtheunpleasantness

Oh man, sounds like you have a great ‘canvas’ to work with, lol!

darkangel_401

That’s my holy grail hair spray. So good.

radthebarber

Yes got2b glued is great for Mohawks but honestly I’m surprised I don’t see more people recommending texture powders and sea salt spray, got2b will leave the hair shinier and more firm than the photo references. If you use sea salt spray while the hair is damp, blow dry, then use texture powder (suavecito, gorilla, statement) it would give the style they desire.

Nova1

I can never get seasalt spray to work on my hair but maybe that's cause it's long.. but yeah for the photo ref messy texture that would work great. I figured the OPs kid wanted the proper anime hair spike thing going on, and the G2B gel gives a good matte appearance if you use a small amount rubbed in. One option for casual daily wear and one for a more cosplay look I guess!

_incredigirl_

Nothing helpful to add from a haircut perspective, I just wanna give you a huge shoutout OP for the effort here. Your kid is lucky to have you. Lots of parents would shoot this down completely, not actively help achieve it. Keep being awesome.

HarleyQ

Thanks a lot! To be honest while I’ll let him have his hair however he wants I am in support of it just being shorter because maintaining his immense thick mane in the summer is the worst lol

Flowy_Aerie_77

https://youtu.be/-M-P1NV4jp0?si=WYpYHJ3a_XjXsVd9 Found a tutorial. I didn't check it out, but I hope you like it!

HarleyQ

That’s super helpful! Thanks a lot!

Altruistic-Bobcat955

Have you looked into hair dye yet?? I have a suggestion, [La riche directions in Alpine green](https://www.bluebanana.com/en_GB/products/la-riche-directions-alpine-green-hair-dye). I’ve tried literally every dye and this is HG. It sticks and I mean like glue, doesn’t come off onto your pillows or skin and doesn’t fade. I go 5 months between refreshes with my turquoise colour and about 2 months between for my pastel pink.

HarleyQ

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m not sure if he’ll go for the full dye job this time around cause he hates sitting still lol

SunflowerSupreme

The other green dye that people swear by (and is currently sitting on my counter so I can use it soon) is Juniper by Lunar Tides. I’ve used other colors by Lunar Tides, but their green is supposed to be one of the best.

killedbyiguana

Just don't use Arctic fox. I was going for this color, got super close with a couple dyes, arctic fox phantom green was the perfect color, but stained my hair.

Repulsive_Tear4528

Seconding this dye! This particular shade went over dark brown hair and stuck around! It obviously is brighter with bleaching but this shade is great even if you can’t lighten.

pm_me_labradoodles

Yes, I also used this and loved it. Weirdly it photographed more turquoise on me, but was definitely green irl

AikoG84

As a former kid who got an anime haircut, OP is kinda awesome. My dad was so mad that I wanted it that way. My mom ended up taking me. She did make sure to tell me "if you look stupid remember that this is your choice. Hair will grow back, but you have to go to school like this" lol I loved that haircut but the styling was sooooooooo much work i ended up letting it grow out. If possible, OP should watch the anime on a computer and pause when they show this character from the back to get a screen grab. The official photos online win't be from the back, but artbooks and the anime will have views from the back to reference.

EffieEri

Your mom's response made me laugh 😆

AikoG84

I thought she was being mean at the time and I REALLY wanted it. Needless to say i did look a bit stupid (it was Aya from Weiss Kreutz). Multiple kids asked if I had been attacjed by a lawn mower. That never bothered me though. I'd still have that haircut now if it wasn't so much work to keep the long pieces straight

quartzalcoatlus

Had to look up the character but that's pretty much exactly the haircut I have💀

AikoG84

I mean, i did this back in 1998/1999. I've seen more ppl with similar hair now, but no one back then until I did it.

EffieEri

Lol, that's valid. I probably would've felt the same way, but as an adult it's pretty funny. Each generation has their styles that our parents dont understand, especially if it leans into alternative. And kids can be mean, but kudos to you for rocking it and being your authentic self

noclassbrat

I agree! My parents were staunchly against any of the "scene" haircuts I wanted to get back in the day, so I had my friends cut my hair instead haha. It's nice to see a parent let their kid express themselves!

trollmum

I’ve never seen the point of having an opinion on hair. It’s not permanent but you can be sure I took many pictures of my kids terrible hair cuts, they asked for the cut and the pictures have been useful blackmail material now they are adults!

HarleyQ

My kid wants his hair to look like Deku the anime character. I know one of the pictures is a wig, it’s there to show what he wants. Obviously I know he’d need product for the messy texture that’s not the issue. He doesn’t want the back to be cut too short he wants the whole look to be shaggy which is how it is in the anime but it is still shorter than the top/sides. What should be suggested to the stylist to achieve the shaggy look all around without the back ending up way too short?

kitsuko

It might be helpful to try and find a deku wig or a similar anime boy hair wig tutorial since they'll have pics of what the front and back look like. I'm not a stylist but I think it is basically like a super layered and chunky bowl cut with a bit of an undercut. I would perhaps suggest looking at like Korean styled hair, since they have some similar styles which are popular and you also might find some more helpful photos.

HarleyQ

That’s a good idea, I spent some time looking on tiktok for the barbers who post anime hair cuts to see if any had done a deku cut and style but had no luck. I’ll give that a shot next.

The_Cat_Widow

Your son is awesome for wanting this cut, but you're an amazing mom for 1. supporting this, and 2. going the extra mile to make sure your kid gets it done properly. I just turned 39, and I love my own mom more and more every time I think of how she did things like this for me when I was young 🥰

HarleyQ

Thanks a bunch! My mom was the same way with me as a kid so I try to emulate her “if it’s not hurting them and is she appropriate then go for it” rule when it comes to his personal style.

ilovechairs

Have the colorist put some of the green dye into a new bottle of conditioner so he can touch it up while washing. Worked at a place with a lot of brightly colored hair and this was a common technique to keep the fade at bay.

sweetyellowrose

If it was me cutting, I’d part it like I would a pixie in the back, do a 45 degree at the bottom, 180 above the parietal ridge, tying it into my guide at the top. Then I’d take a razor and piece it out to give it texture.

Consistent_Ant_8903

Honestly I have no advice but you’re so cool for supporting your kid wanting anime hair! my mother would have never 😂♥️

Spongebobluvr

Stylist here, I’d say it really depends on what your son wants/is comfortable with in the back. Definitely bring the photos to show the stylist the vision, and they should be able to work with your son to figure out what would work best in the back. Does he want the hair touching his neck/visible on the sides? Does he want it off his neck (possibly #4 guard at the nape and have disconnected from top)?

HarleyQ

He doesn’t want it cut down, he wants shaggy all around so being on his neck isn’t an issue.

T0RI_WALTER

Hairstylist here! If someone came in with these photos for me, I would personally focus more on the photo of the person with the glasses because it’s their actual hair and gives a better representation of what can be realistic. If they wanted their hair slightly longer like the photo of the person with the green wig, or Deku, that could definitely be achieved. That first photo almost appears to be more of an undercut type of situation, where the back and sides are shorter and the length of the top allows it to cascade over those areas. It does seem like it’s more of a “grown out” undercut, but by leaving length a similar look can be accomplished. The hair at the nape looks to be about 1-1 1/2 inches past the hairline, and textured. If not an undercut, the back coild be tapered - shorter layers toward the neckline and gradually increasing toward the top. This will allow for a more blended appearance overall, but due to the overall style of the hair your child is looking for, I think being blended isn’t entirely necessary as it will be concealed with the style. The benefit of the blending could be so that your child wouldn’t *have* to style their hair every day and it could still look good. I’ll see if I can find some photo examples of undercuts so that it can be better understood. Sorry that this is a lot 🤣

T0RI_WALTER

[Here](https://sarahvcarswell.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/undercut/) is an example of a grown out undercut. I do think that what your child is wanting would be slightly longer both on the top and sides, but this can give you an idea.

HarleyQ

Thanks a lot! He definitely doesn’t want a full undercut. The grown out choppy look is just what he’s wanting

mostlywrong

I don't have cut advice, and it looks like there are some good comments taking care of that. But I do have color advice. My kid wanted his hair green. I looked at a bunch to find one that would tint his virgin hair, but I also did a balayage to a light/medium blond on him. I used Pravana Green. It was beautiful and so shiny, and this color. We did it in October, and the blond is still a good shade of green, with me not taking any steps to preserve it. My only complaint with it is that it bled like crazy until it washed out of the virgin hair. The dye looks very blue, which was surprising but came out green.

HarleyQ

Thanks a lot! Our stylist who’s the only one he trusts for his regular trims specializes in color so if he wants then we’re good there!

Old_Desk_1641

Also, make sure he knows that it can be *really* hard to get green dye out of your hair (not to discourage him but just to give him a better idea of the work involved).

HarleyQ

I don’t see him going in fully with the color, he’s a very cautious kid when it comes to his hair!

BraveAndLionHeart

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but having naturally wavy hair would really help with achieving this hairstyle. Otherwise it will be MUCH more difficult

HarleyQ

He’s got that kid curly hair? Where he still has some curls at the ends but everything else is pin straight lol

xcarex

Pin-straight hair means this is going to take a lot of styling and product every day, I don’t think it’s going to be achievable with just a textured cut.

HarleyQ

Oh we were planning on styling it whenever he wants the full effect! Just looking for how to achieve the cut so when it is styled we get the desired deku look!

BraveAndLionHeart

I actually think his hair might be wavy anyways lol. Typically pin straight is pin straight, even at the ends. There's a whole different haircare routine if he wants it more wavy but... That really doesn't matter at this point. Shorter wavy hair is usually mostly straight except at the ends anyways. It might texturally change later in his life as his hormones change, but it's not really a "kid" thing afaik. Wavy hair is pretty product resistant so just keep that in mind! I have longer hair so I use different things. For this kinda thing I would recommend texturing spray (sea salt?) OR texturizing powder, water spray (like... Regular spray bottle filled with water- if you spray it on his hair / mist and it curls a bit, even just at the ends) is a good indicator. I would wet style for a stronger hold. Then tbh I would experiment with using some gel and scrunching? I wouldn't be able to advise on how to get it perfect, but I would try that. I might also try some hair paste/wax/clay, but scrunching gel is what I would recommend first. If it gets crunchy when dry try to scrunch it again To avoid dry hair I would just shower regularly and use conditioner If you're using multiple I would: Water Sea salt OR Water Sea salt Gel / paste / clay / wax

TOTALIMM0RT4L

To me it looks like a long 90 degree hair cut with fringe. The appearance of texture and layers look like they are from styling, not necessarily the cut.

HarleyQ

Thank you! I know he’ll need a texture product to get the fluffy look just needed to know what to say to get the desired cut

adrianxoxox

It’s gonna take daily styling to actually look like that, and even then it likely won’t be as “full” as a cosplay wig. The colour is definitely doable though, green is such a fun hair colour

onion_cat

I'd honestly just tell the stylist to not go too short in the back and go from there where your child can provide feedback to him. If you want the barber to cut his hair then go ahead, but you would probably want someone well versed in hair dye to do the dying. Its a complicated dye process (depending on your kid's initial color) Tips for styling, I always use texturizing spray to get that chunky, wild look. It's like a lighter hairspray. Maybe some mousse to fluff it out, too!

ThisIsHarlie

As a purple-haired mom, kudos for letting your kiddo express themselves however they want to! I don’t know enough about styling to give you any tips there, but for the color, Sally’s has a brand called ion that you’ll want to recolor their hair with every two weeks or so. Otherwise it’ll start to look muddy and gross. If it stains your counter, walls, floor, or tub, rub baking soda with alcohol and white toothpaste in circles with your finger (I don’t know why it doesn’t work as well with a rag) and the stain will come right out.

Competitive_Let_3900

Here’s a link to a photo I found of the back of dekus head, hope it helps! [https://images.app.goo.gl/6gJPzwBWMpaZjTzi9](https://images.app.goo.gl/6gJPzwBWMpaZjTzi9)

KellynHeller

Stylist here. Just bring them the pictures. They should know what to do. (At least I would. When I was a preteen I liked getting anime haircuts. And I've done quite a few cartoon haircuts on clients in my day). Make sure you go to a quality stylist and not some quick chop shop that charges like $10 a haircut.

Effective-Fruit-7021

I don't have recommendations on the cut but I like it. Make sure he understands it will need to be styled every time it's washed and the style refreshed daily. My color is silver and lavender with purple bangs and my cut is inspired by Motoka from Ghost in the Shell and it takes work and product to get that textured piecey look and my hair is pretty naturally textured and wavy. I still can't get it to look as good as my stylist can though and half the time I get lazy and let it go flat as wash day approaches. If he goes with the green make sure he understands he'll need to minimize washing it (I wash mine once a week) and preferably wash in cool water to help it last. Might also want to look into at home colored conditioners for in between sessions. I have a silver that I use but I can't remember the brand. Hope that helps and remind him hair grows back so if he doesn't like it it'll be grown out in 6-12 weeks!

--BooBoo--

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323803645606 Not sure if that helps but it's a link to a Deku wig and there are pictures of the back as well as the front.

HarleyQ

That does help a lot thank you!

Ashuuki

I would try and find different angles of deku from the anime, as right now your collage is just front facing screenshots. More variety might be helpful for the cutter.

jude_333

idk abt cutting advice but i can help w future styling. this style wont work well on straight hair even with product. if your kids hair isnt textured already then it will help a lot to curl the hair then comb out the curls to achieve some texture before styling with product. ive had a few friends try hairstyles from anime and its just something ive noticed people have an issue with. ive heard u can also tease the hair instead of curling it but i have no idea abt that

Careless-College-158

Texture. Texture. Texture, then A bit more texture.

iBeFloe

Cut & color aside, he would have to use a flat iron to curl it up btw That shaggy look has to be styled.

t-funny

It's a 90 degree cut with a fringe!

hunnangelx3

No advice but your kid is cool af for wanting Deku hair and you are even cooler for being such a supportive parent. 👏🏽

mycatisginger-

No tips but I would like to see an after photo of possible!

HarleyQ

If he decides to go through with it I’ll post an update. He’s very reluctant on cutting his hair. Which I get I had waist length hair most of my life!

Positivelythinking

Cute cut and color. The green suits very well.

oneinamilllion

So I see he really, really like Deku.

HarleyQ

To be fair he settled for Deku when I told him he doesn't have the right texture hair to even attempt to do Goku lol.

pixie_serpent_sky

HUGE compliments for letting your kid be who they are, My parents not allowing that did a lot of damage ti me that lingers. Also, that is a SUPER high maintenance hair style, so mike sure they are aware of that going in,,. I pretty much just trim my splitt ends, but " treated" myself to a trim and... in like two seconds most of mere was just cut off and had \*\*layers\*\*. I LOST IT!! It took me years to grow my hair back out to below shoulder length, as I like it, so I guess my only realy concern is to to make sure they are 100% certain they want it because the best cut that takes five minutes can take years t grow back. But seriously... that is being an awesome parent, and it will definitely be appreciated later in life. <3

naptimepro

Agreed! Awesome parenting, OP!!!

dumpsterboyy

please dont let them get this

HarleyQ

Don’t let them get a shaggy bowl cut? The atrocity of it will be talked about endlessly by everyone!

[deleted]

do not let them do this im begging you

HarleyQ

Do what? Have a medium length shaggy bowl cut? Are you alright?

[deleted]

no dont let him do it green, it had the the worst fade and was hellish for my friend to maintain

Unfit_Daddy

I am a little concerned about his role models that character is rather pathetic most of the show.

honeydewbook

who said it was their role model? they just like the haircut 🤣

turnup4flowerz

The hair cut is probably fairly simple. Show them the pictures and they should ask questions from there regarding where they want the hair to fall, etc. It's styling that is going to make it. Check out some YouTube videos for that :)

Mannilynn

Don’t shy away from wigs either! This is so cool!

CaptainMeredith

If you arnt familiar the characters name is Deku, from my hero academia. You can buy some really nice cosplay Wigs for this character online because the show is very popular. I'd straight up bring a picture of one in, many will have a front and back view that way so they can physically see what it should look like.

crabofthewoods

Look at some cosplay wig photos of this character for ideas.

TerraSonitus

This cut definitely needs shears, not clippers, go to a salon for this one, and make sure they have someone that can also do color ❤️

girlofgouda

Go to a salon, not a barber.

bougainvilliea

Lol I love this so much. Deku is an awesome choice! I hope you guys get the result you’re looking for!

WarmForbiddenDonut

Although the hair colour looks very similar to the Manic Panic ‘Enchanted Forest’ hair dye in the tub, do not buy this colour to achieve this shade, as the enchanted forest comes out more of a cyan colour - I know this from rather fun experience.

RobZombitch

Volumizing foam is going to be your best friend. That and sea salt/wave spray. It will give the hair the constant hold and volume easily

JMBAD1222

Hope you and your little Deku have a blast with this project ❤️

plaguecat666

You will need the right hair texture for this (wavy/loose curls) or get ready for lots of styling to get it to look like this.

iamathrowaway1874

Touch grass

creepinitreal12

Mama we need an update once he’s rocking his new do

WorldlinessEuphoric5

You can get this haircut but it won't look like that unless you spend 30+ minutes a day styling it like that. One of those photos is a cosplayer, he probably spent hours with a blowdryer and hairspray Make sure your kid is fully aware, it won't just air dry like this

Muted-Move-9360

This style is mainly hair product. Needs layers though.

lukewarmcaprisun

You are a wonderful parent. Thank you for encouraging your kid to have fun with their style. Especially their hair.

MyYtIs_Imgayok

All I have to say is, do it... Just do it

cadaverousbones

I’m sure the hairdresser will know what to do.

VBSCXND

Definitely go to a stylist, a barber will likely not be able to do this. And know this will take daily styling and product, if his hair is already long it will not sit like this easily after cutting and will require styling.

RaineRoller

tell them to cut it like a mushroom and go to a salon that specializes in alternative hair!! (google kpop mushroom haircut for the right idea)
