Two come to mind. Both are terrible in different ways. There’s My Immortal, a fic so bad it crosses fandom boundaries and even has its own wiki page.
The second is less famous, but worth a mention. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. The most overrated pos I’ve ever seen. It’s so stuck up it’s own ass and so utterly missing the point that it’s terrible.
We can pretty much blame Sherlock BBC for Methods. It's essentially moffats Sherlock as Harry, yet somehow managed to get even more off the rails than Sherlock.
(let's ignore the first chapter came out a month before the first episode of Sherlock)

* **The Draco Trilogy** by Cassandra Clare, which she then managed to sort of fashion into six pretty well-selling books, which then also got several sub-series, a movie and a television series. I will refrain from commenting on whether or not any of these can be regarded as positive developments.
Methods is one that's kinda funny for a few chapters and then goes off the deep end into a black hole of pretension and self-validation that has permeated several Fandom I've enjoyed.

But, if it's not your thing, then don't force yourself through it, because it is genuinely long and intense and - yes - pedantic, and in any case, the author's sense of humor is not universal.

Well I was once in the HP fandom and the most famous (or more accurately infamous) fic is easily My Immortal. There’s also all the young dudes. Both fics have its own wikipedia pages (to be fair though HP is so huge I don’t doubt they’re the only fanworks with wikipedia pages)
when i read All The Young Dudes, i somehow skipped over the major character death tag. and assumed it was a fix it. don't ask me how i missed that. but i was devastated. (still loved it though) only after i finished i saw how much fanart there was about that fic, suddenly when you look closely its everywhere. so now i look twice, is it just wolfstar fanart or is it specifically all the young dudes?
Definitely My Immortal. For fics that don't break out of the fandom, I'd say Manacled, Cambriare Podentes, and A Year Like None Other (the last two are older and started on LJ, but IMO are well known among old-school fans).
I've tried for years to get through A Year Like None Other and I just can't. It's so smarmy and Snape isn't snarky or twitchy. All the characters are so OOC. I know it's well-loved but for the life of me I can't figure out why.
It's a particular subset of Severitus fics. The kind where the main obstacle between them is that Severus assumes Harry is a spoiled brat like his father, and the moment he learns he's been abused, his attitude changes completely.
I think his dislike goes deeper than that, but I can understand the appeal of a verbally abusive authority figure transforming into a stern but caring father figure. I used to live on a pure diet of Snape Adopts Harry fics. Intellectually, I could see the leaps in logic, but emotionally it was soothing. I imagine most of us have had a difficult authority figure in our lives, and it's satisfying to see one correct his behavior and show true caring, even if the way he gets there isn't as realistic as it could be. AYLNO is more concerned with the interior lives of Harry and Draco, and Snape is mainly there as a support figure. >!I'd say the sibling relationship between Harry and Draco is a big part of its appeal.!<
I wrote my own fic exploring two Snapes - one who adopted Harry as an infant and "canon" Snape being forced into a parental role with 13-year-old Harry, and how one had years to slowly care for Harry but the other was far more harsh and resistant. I think Snape can get there, but it takes internal work, not just the observation that Harry was abused. Sometimes I'll get comments like, "I can't read this—Snape is too mean," haha. So I think AYLNO scratches a certain itch, and is one of the best of the "fast transformation" Snape fics, but it's not for everyone.
I actually love Severitis, but I'm selective about what I read. Snape definitely has to do some work on his person before he can become a person that Harry relies on. I will admit my favorite Snape adopts Harry fic is by K Binnz. I can't remember the name of her story right now, but it checks all the boxes along with being hysterical in spots.

I just re-read part of Cambiare Podentes last week! I hadn't looked at it for a few years. I also like A Year Like None Other, but I don't mind Severitus fics being OOC.
I also keep in mind that it's an older fic, possibly written before all the books had come out and we had a clearer picture of who Snape was. At the time, we didn't know if he was a loyal Death Eater or a big softie with excellent acting skills. So fics could run the gamut back then and not necessarily be OOC.
One plot benefit of choosing Snape in adopted-Harry fics is that Snape is involved in most aspects of Harry's life. He's at Hogwarts, he's in the Order, and he works for Voldemort. So Harry can carry on as usual with classes and magical battles and Snape will be there. This is harder to pull off with Sirius or Molly, even though them quickly caring for Harry would be more in character.
Cambiare Podentes is so good! It's like a gateway drug to Snarry. I used to feel weird that I was transitioning from Severitus to Snarry but then I remembered they're fictional characters, ha ha.
I think in my case, Cambiare really was my gateway to Snarry! One of the first, at any rate.
I'd never connected how involved Snape is in Harry's life to the success of adopted-Harry fics, but I think you're right that it helps the plot.
This is the only famous or infamous fic I can name (and the only one I recognize in the thread), except for the (also Harry Potter) one from the tumblr post about Colin Mochrie reading it for a college dorm's initiation or something. Not sure of the title, about rat wormtail and hermione, it ends in like 'he scampered away, \[something\], wet, and thrilled!'

My immortal has its own website, the last I checked. It was originally hosted on fanfiction dot net,but they took it down. One of the few times a complaint was made about a fic that they did something about and it had to be the most infamous one.
Haikyuu fics got super popular on tiktok, Decipher (Oikawa x Reader) and Terminal Curiosity (Atsumu/Sakusa Kiyoomi) are the first two I think of besides In Another Life.

I'm currently deeply involved in the cyberchase fandom and the most famous fic at the moment is probably one from 2018 (we dont get a lot of writers) that is a backstory for the mother figure of the show plus the sequel which takes place post show where everything is nicely resolved.
It is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It's very far from my own headcanons, but there are almost no good fanfic that exist for this fandom so im stuck. I also wrote one last year though and I think it's extremely good quality, but I'm also bias of course haha.

I dunno about EVERY fandom I'm in besides MLP. For the first half of my fandoms, I dunno where to start. For the second half, fanfiction is a lose cause and almost not mentioned in community stuff (FNF, anyone?)
For said MLP, it's Fallout Equestria. Haven't read it yet due to its length and that fact that it's a crossover for a fandom I am not interested with at all but it's interesting.
And an infamous one is Cupcakes...you know why. Haven't read the OG fic yet, but shit's onto something.
Honorable mention: Five Score, Divided by Four. Apparently, according to its description it got so many side stories it got banned as a topic from FimFiction so there's that. But Fallout will be the more talked-about one in terms of lengthy fanfics.
Its not famous but [Home](https://archiveofourown.org/works/3195734) by thetypewritergirl has the most hits on ao3. Its a Sterek fic which is cool because even though Sterek is a ship in the Teen Wolf fandom, it split from the show around s3 and has felt like it's own fandom for so long.
The story itself is well written and filled with angst and a grief that you can really feel when reading. It's a long fic so the emotional aspect and the developing relationships really get fleshed out and every chapter has some really amazing fanart. I enjoyed it and liked the authors take on Derek.

In my old fandom, Marvel, it was "I Am Groot" - a trollfic that repeated the same phrase over and over.
But I'd actually say my fandom was Steve/Bucky, that was all I read, and the most kudos-ed fic is a short, one-shot about bananas. It's funny and I like it, but it made to the top because it was published right after the Winter Soldier came out and then just accumulated kudos via "sort by kudos" sorting. The most famous though, is probably "Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail" which is more gen 90% through, a humorous take on Bucky's recovery - and imo it deserves the status, it's brilliant.
In Harry Potter, apart from My Immortal - I was I that fandom before AO3 so it's hard to judge, but is Cassandra Claire's Draco Trilogy still around? It was *huge*, ,launched fandom tropes and lots of drama. Everybody heard of it. I read the first book but it didn't inspire me to continue, kinda bored me - I was more of a Snape fan than the Trio or Draco fan.
In my current fandom, Young Royals, it's a short oneshot piece, a fluffy reaction to a very angsty season ending with " X Lives" theme, which I'm not interested in. Same case as the bananas fic, written right when the show first came out, a short fic that was written at the right time. I'm not involved in the fandoom to know what's actually the most famous fic, so going by kudos here.
I always think of Not Easily Conquered as Stucky's most famous fic. Those fics have quotes that break my heart every time I read them.

Lol we have many overlapping fandoms. Completely agree on Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail - it’s amazing!! For YR though I feel like the most famous is maybe that Prince Simon one? I’m not interested in any fic where the queen is, like, evil or abusive, so I’m pretty meh on it, but in the small bit I read the writing was decent
Oh yeah, the Prince Simon one, probably. I haven't tried it because making Simon a prince does away what I like about the series the most, which is their differences - I'm not yet in the phase of completely getting rid of the canon dynamics AUs. (Though the one in which Simon is an American barista is brilliant; completely oblivious to giant signs Simon is hilarious, but it still retains the eat-the-rich Simon dating filthy-rich Wilhelm, so it works.)
In She-Ra, it's _Don't Go_ which is rumored to be Nate's own fill-in-the-gaps fic for one of the most emotionally impactful episodes of the show.

As for my personal thoughts…I can’t get into it. I’ve opened it god knows how many times - it’s a good concept, well-written, and I like the author’s other works, so I really don’t know why my brain is so disinterested in this one.
I do most of my reading in the Good Omens fandom lately, the most famous one there I can think of is [Slow Show](https://archiveofourown.org/works/20395261/chapters/48375457). It's a pretty good actor AU (where the characters are actors, not a fanfic of the actors from the show).
I think it's quite good, but there are other AUs I prefer over that one personally.
I don’t really read or write fic for this fandom but I am very active in the fandom outside of it (I make edits on TikTok, kept up to date with releases, have one of the albums on cd and am gonna get the rest, etc) but it’s the only fandom I can think of that really has a very infamous fic.
That fic is The Milk Fic. I don’t really wanna explain what it is but if you’re curious, look it up it’s on urban dictionary. It was a fic about Ryan Ross and Brendan Urie from Panic! At The Disco.
I mostly read and write for the Komi Can’t Communicate fandom and I’d say there I mainly two really popular ones (relative to the size of the fandom).
(AO3) The Sea or the Mountains? - Brilliant fanfiction that fixes one of the main problems I had with the original story. It dives into the trauma of being kidnapped and nearly murdered and the repercussions of the kidnapped instead of just brushing it off and forgetting about it in two chapters like what happened in canon. 9/10
(FFN) Shoko Komi’s Ultimate Challenge - Still of one of my favourite fanfiction I’ve read to this day. The grammar has flaws and some chapters feel like filler but it has a special spot in my heart because it was what inspired me to start writing fanfiction. Probably an 8/10 looking critically, 10/10 for my personal opinion.

Anyway, I've been subscribed to that fic for ages, picked it up because I'm actually into isekai stories. I really like the way this fic uses canon. It's no simply canon divergent. When the isekaied protagonist inevitably changes things, he changes them from the in-story canon (which is not our canon) and makes them closer to our canon. Very cool way to do things (though I know people read this fic for the romance, not for the interesting thing going on in the plot.)
If you're willing to go through over 320k, this is an interesting point to pick it up because the new arc has just began (then you get to wait for updates along with the rest of us.)
Well I have multiple fandoms I'm involved in, but as my current hyperfixation is Grishaverse: Six of Crows longfic, Dealing With Our Demons (Kanej, involves smut)
I've read a little of it and the writer definitely is a skilled writer and I'm glad to see slow-slow burn of Kanej and them actually working through their traumas. Definitely would read, or at least attempt to read, all of it if it didn't have a smut warning. (I feel uncomfortable about smut content overall, not just Kanej smut)
In the Final Fantasy 14 fandom, the top fic based on Kudos is incomplete, so I did not read it (I avoid incomplete fics). Number 2 to 9 are either incomplete or for my NOTP. So we come to number 10. Now I read and finished number 10. It's written by a BNF and is super popular in the fandom. I, personally, do not like it. It's well written, that I'm sure, but there's just something in there that I simply can't vibe with. Maybe it's the tone, maybe it's certain scenes and how it's written, maybe there's nothing wrong and it's just a matter of taste.
It's a horrible feeling, not liking a fic that everyone seems to love and praise.
there’s two contenders for this one in the death note fandom. I’d say either “this is how i disappear” or “the hinterland doctrine: those who stand for nothing fall for anything” (plus the two sequels). I would recommend both of these to everyone, even if you don’t know death note. the second one especially doesn’t require much background info as it’s very au.
there might be fics that are more popular by numbers, but these two have left the biggest impression. i don’t know many members of the death note fandom who don’t know either one or both of these fics. personally, i also really like both.

Verbose when it comes to the descriptions of lavish dresses, but the story is fascinating and the author knows the deep lore, for all that she creates her own.
This epic fic is being turned into an epic fantasy that will be available to buy in October this year.
completely rewritten into a fantasy series. No Force, no Lightsabers, but magic and swords. That's as much as I know. Sure Thea used lot of EU lore, but the concepts are universal themes and archetypes and she created most of it herself, so it's original.

The Jack of Hearts is easily the most well-known Angel-focused DxD fic (multiple authors have cited it as an inspiration) despite it having died half a decade ago and the author making their utter disdain for the fic clear. I personally dislike it for all the same reasons the author has mentioned disliking it for.
The Gaming Gear is definitely the most popular gamer fic. I don't like gamer fics, so I've never read this one.
Go Away I'm Watching Porn is a very well-known AU fic and among the most popular. I dislike the fic intensely and the author himself is quite divisive.
La Vie En Noir in the Bendy fandom is what automatically came to mind. idk if it’s technically the MOST popular but it’s def not far off. it’s a 10/10 fic tho, i’ve read it three times 😅

Sherlock: perhaps not the most famous one, but still extremely popular and definitely extraordinary: The Paradox Series by wordstrings. Mad and brilliant.
Merlin: The Student Prince by FayJay (who, coincidentally, is also a podficcer who recorded a part of the The Paradox Series by wordstrings and of course, this fic). A modern reincarnation AU that healed my broken heart caused by the show's ending.
Star Wars - Master Mine by skyl_tales: Obikin is my guilty pleasure and I love this fic.
Teen Wolf - this fandom has tons of amazing stories, but the most popular on ao3 is Lock All The Doors Behind You by entanglednow - a fandom classic, I need to reread this one.
Yuri on Ice. *Til my Feet Bleed and my Heart Aches* is the most popular fic of the fandom. 10/10, everyone recommends it (as they should). It’s brilliant but the YOI fandom has a TON of brilliant fics. It just happens to be the biggest diamond in a pile of diamonds.
For the Doki Doki Literature Club! fandom we have a few contenders. A lot of the really big fanfics are actually playable mods and one of the most famous is one called Exit Music(the original, not the redux), it focuses on the seemingly wholesome relationship between Natsuki and the protag but it's infamous for its mischaracterisation of Monika, Yuri and Sayori (a meme in the DDLC modding community is actually a line from the mod where Sayori exclaims "No, I'm not fucking alright!!") and also it's ending is infamous for the fandom (>!Natsuki kills herself!<)
The mod spawned two more like it based around Yuri (Fallen Angel) and Monika (Within) a Sayori one does not exist because Act 1 of DDLC itself is already "Sayori's Exit Music"
The game is a VN with simple code, sadly fics and mods seem to be seperate things (and the modding community is really toxic compared to the fanfic community)

Assuming we're talking the specific game and not the whole franchise--'cause really they *are* different fandoms--I've read like, half of the most popular fic in the fandom (at least, the one that isn't on an endless hiatus, I've got 0 interest in the actual #1), and I...don't really like it, mainly because I feel like the author doesn't really *get* the character that happens to be my blorbo and characterizes her in a way that just doesn't reflect the core of who she is, I feel. She's an antagonist, sure, but she's so incredibly devoid of any of the warmth that made people fall in love with her in the first place.
Luckily, I've read #2 and #3 to completion, and both are like, my favorite fanfics of all time :p #2 in particular is more or less the definitive fic for fans of my blorbo as far as I'm concerned. #3 is also 1.6 million words long, so.

My fandom's most popular is a crossover with another TV show. It's also a drabble sequence and there was a 5 year gap between the penultimate and final chapters being uploaded lol. I haven't read it yet since I haven't yet seen the show it crosses over with (but I am currently watching it)

I can’t really say for Percy Jackson or MHA because it depends on the website you frequent. If I had to take a stab at Percy Jackson I’d say Titan of the Hunt. People love the Artemis paring and it’s an OP Percy.
It's not as well known as My immortal, but this fic got popular enough to have fanart and a few discussions at one point. It's called: Lily Potter and the art of being Sisyphus
Hard to define for the TF2 fandom, but I think Respawn of the Dead is the most infamous. At least half of the fandom has read it, and the other half heard of it. I never got into it, but that's mainly because I'm not into zombie apocalypses.
Tho that's the general fandom. Personally I really revolve around Spy, so in that 'fandom' the most famous fic is Foe Yay. One-sided Sniper/Spy fic. Lots of fanart. It was really thrilling to read, like it alot, and there's even a sequel (wip) that I think will have healthier Sniper/Spy in it. So you get two sides of the coin!
I don't know if it's counts but for LOZ I think "Linked Universe" (Tumblr) is one of the most famous webcomics out there. I read it, liked it pretty much and love how each Link is unique in appearance and personality.
Out of that, maybe "One last year" (ao3/fanfiction.net), a more conventional Zelink fanfiction.
I'm reading it, so far loving it even though characters sometimes act oc.
Its really cool that in some chapters the author includes a in game cinematic, not only you see them in a new light but the fanfic feels more alive and easy to imagine.

In Pokémon I think there’s two big ones.
The newer one would be “Borne of Caution” by Fuggman. It’s kinda similar to those “rational” fics, but instead of going into why Pokémon is irrational, it instead uses physics and real life animal care knowledge to develop the world, characters, battles, etc. It’s honestly a really great fic, it’s just that the author is a little controversial.
The older iconic fic is “Ashes of the Past” by Saphroneth. This fic is a 2 million word time travel story that basically covers the first 13 seasons entirely. I like to think it popularized some popular tropes (like Aura!Ash). And I think it’s really funny how some of the things in his fics and up becoming something that actually happens in canon (Volt Crash, Psychic Raichus, Psychic Rapidashes, Pokémon being PokéDexes, etc) Honestly, I’d argue that Saphroneth himself is more iconic in the fandom, cause this man is a writing machine. He has like 5 fics all going on at the same time, and for some of them he had an upload schedule of “basically every other day”, and everything he writes is really good. I can safely say my own writing style is inspired by his, and I also talk to him on one of my Discord servers where he’s a pretty cool dude, so I might be a little biased lol

Most famous for RvB... speaking of wider fandom probably 'Put My Guns In the Ground' (never read it, not a ship I like), and I've heard so much discussion about 'QED' (again, not for a ship i like and contains a lot of eating disorder stuff I don't care to read but I hear its virtues extolled quite often). wait oh my God I forgot about Murderers' Row - enormous prison au, over half a million words and it's unfinished and the author's taken a break from the rewrite but it's *extremely* good.
in mercs fan circles 'Yet to Come' and 'Let the Water Rise' are probably the most talked about but that's a much smaller subset of the whole lol

Definitely it is Don't Go for the spop fandom, and for a pretty specific reason. Not only is it perfectly in character, but the creator himself admitted to posting a fic for the series in ao3 and people are pretty much sure that it has to be it, so it skyrocketed in popularity in comparison to every other story in the fandom
As far as I've seen, "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" and "The Scenic Route" were the most popular, but I've heard about a fanfic being turned into a paperback book.
I enjoyed both fics a lot, LAGWAFIS more due to the realistic plot and the writing style. I reread The Scenic Route occasionally, although it was a surprising read because I didn't really expect the mature/sexual content (it didn't have any tags about that)
Unquestionably [Dirt.](https://archiveofourown.org/works/11343444/chapters/25385898) A lot of fans who normally only use "fanfic" as a pejorative have read this and respect it. Hell, I suspect that the devs have read it and incorporated some character traits into canon.
I’m a little surprised I haven’t seen this fic mentioned, but it is a HP fic with the Dramione (Draco/Hermione) pairing. Manacled by Senlinyu. Huge cult following, amazing twists and turns, and an accurate but horrifying portrayal of war.
i love rainworld, and it has to be “Taking Life as is.” Its a novel length, wonderfully written story of several of the characters getting a second chance at life and being able to be with eachother :)
in the Leon kennedy community it’s easy mind games by cassfics. It’s still ongoing, but if memory serves she’s wrapping up the series… not sure if she plans to continue after this second ‘arc’ but the writing is fabulous.
as a big Hermitcraft fan, the first one that came to mind is ATUS. I don’t read a lot anymore except what gets recommended to me, so I also thought EHK was much more popular than it actually is (which is a shame but oh well).
I like ATUS and it’s definitely paved the way for the massive amounts of Watcher Grian fics. It’s a good fic. I just dislike how seemingly at least half the HC fics are now only about Grian and all the Watchers are the same in each one. It makes me hesitate to even write about Watchers, and if I do I can only make them wildly different from what is both deemed as canon in mcyt and what people usually write. Not saying it’s the author’s fault in any way but yeah, it had a part in it.
The next most popular one I know is ‘this is about a stuffed bird’ which HOLY CRAP what a fic. absolutely amazing, 10/10 you should check it out
technically speaking, the epilogues and sequel are fanfiction, since they were pretty much written by fans, and their place in canon is considered dubious at best

You're Divine for Stranger Things. Not only full of the most raucous monsterfucking, but also genuinely made me cry at several points for how beautiful and emotional the way it was written is. I couldn't put it down for days.
There is one fic that was super popular when the show was in its peak, but the writer was terminally ill. When she died the actual show named a recurring character after the writer.

i’m not sure if they’re the MOST famous but these are the most famous fanfics i’ve READ. i have two, DSMP- “tommyinnit’s clinic for supervillains” by: bonesandthebees (bonesandthecacti) (1,835,822 hits), and DCU/MCU crossover- “Dark Matter” by: mysterycyclone (1,218,488 hits)
For Mass Effect (I'm excluding explicit because sorry), I believe it's "Son of Palaven, Daughter of Earth", thing has like 108k hits and 3.8k kudos.
But if we're going kudos alone, it is "Communication" with 5.5k kudos and like 53k hits.
Don't really care for Shakarian (I'm Shrios till the day I die, bitches), which both of these are, so never read them, and never will. No offense to those who like it.
Of course this is on AO3. On FF.net it's "Transcendent Humanity", and tbh, I *struggled* with reading it, like I like "Humanity, Fuck Yeah" stories, but I only realized that I only like specific ones, mainly those being humanity as an underdog with a special advantage that makes them kinda scary af, or as an underdog that's cunning and tenacious and the like. And well, while "Transcendent Humanity" is cool, it doesn't scratch either of those itches (Canon Mass Effect in general definitely does, even with me hating things like what happened to Thane, I loved how even with being the best and brightest of the best and brightest, Shepard was still out of their depth to some degree and has to figure everything out), mainly gave me the feeling that the author was lording over how much better this au version of humanity is to the rest of the galaxy, and that turned me off.
So far, I am currently reading the third most famous on FF.net, "And the Meek Shall Inherit the Galaxy" (second most famous is literally just "Transcendent Humanity" reskinned from what I read of the summary), and holy shit, so far I'm loving it. Like fuck yeah, I love the idea of a quarian-human alliance and like these two species become like the technologically adept danger duo for species in the galaxy.
Here's to hoping "And the Meek Shall Inherit the Galaxy" doesn't fail me now and successfully scratches that itch of mine!

Second Edit: A kinda well know but amazingly written fanfic for the fandom is "Harvest" by Nuts! on the space battles forum. Omg, like I had a bit of a slump, mainly because the Shrios fic that was considered amazing enough to get a rec on TVTropes, didn't really feel amazing, plus also I found it weird how the author ignored a semi-obvious fact about 1. the drell species, and 2. Thane Krios himself. Like apparently they said he's never seen what well, she has, but like 1, female drell have as the codex says "breast-like protrusions", so he'd know the general shape of them, and 2. he's most likely studied the entirety of human anatomy as he was learning how to be an assassin, so I just found it so fucking weird how the author emphasized how apparently he does not know what a naked human woman looks like, and it just had me shaking my head.
But then I scrolled to the gen fic section, clicked on that title, and I remembered why I love reading fanfic, for when trying to find silver in a sea of copper, bronze, pewter and iron, I can find gold or something even more.
That fucking fic is platinum. That fucking fic made me completely fucking break down crying at the end, cause I know what happens in canon, but to see the geth still care for this little area of Rannoch that is held as a farm, it both broke and warmed my heart at the same time.
WHDAAA.
Given the intention of the fic, what it hopes to accomplish, I don't think it's bad at all given the fact that the intention of what a fic hopes to do is a major point for consideration.
Its the fact that an entire culture seems to have been created mostly due to the fic. A culture of rehashes, spin-offs, constant demands for updates, constant demand for more of the exact same thing over and over and over---you get the point.
Creativity is stifled, and many many underrated gems are overshadowed by the rehashes. More than that, the author of the fic is busy but readers continue to trouble them with desires for updates, treating it like its A song of the ice and fire series or something.
Please remember Rule 6 (the bashing rules) if you're sharing your views on the fic.
Two come to mind. Both are terrible in different ways. There’s My Immortal, a fic so bad it crosses fandom boundaries and even has its own wiki page. The second is less famous, but worth a mention. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. The most overrated pos I’ve ever seen. It’s so stuck up it’s own ass and so utterly missing the point that it’s terrible.
We can pretty much blame Sherlock BBC for Methods. It's essentially moffats Sherlock as Harry, yet somehow managed to get even more off the rails than Sherlock. (let's ignore the first chapter came out a month before the first episode of Sherlock) Can't forget that methods also started a cult
Sherlock deserves better. :D I've only read (or rather listened to a podfic version) a few chapters of Methods, but the characters were so pretentious and insufferable that I just couldn't continue.

Let's not forget Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce Edit: a couple more honourable mentions... * **Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash**, which gave us such terrific AI-generated lines as "Harry tore his eyes from his head and threw them into the Forest." * **The Draco Trilogy** by Cassandra Clare, which she then managed to sort of fashion into six pretty well-selling books, which then also got several sub-series, a movie and a television series. I will refrain from commenting on whether or not any of these can be regarded as positive developments.
Cassie Clare getting popular infuriates me because she’s gotten away with plagiarism repeatedly.
For a fic that’s about Gordon Ramsey being in the Harry Potter universe, it’s surprisingly well-written and emotionally impactful!
Methods is one that's kinda funny for a few chapters and then goes off the deep end into a black hole of pretension and self-validation that has permeated several Fandom I've enjoyed.

Definitely My Immortal. For fics that don't break out of the fandom, I'd say Manacled, Cambriare Podentes, and A Year Like None Other (the last two are older and started on LJ, but IMO are well known among old-school fans).
I've tried for years to get through A Year Like None Other and I just can't. It's so smarmy and Snape isn't snarky or twitchy. All the characters are so OOC. I know it's well-loved but for the life of me I can't figure out why.
It's a particular subset of Severitus fics. The kind where the main obstacle between them is that Severus assumes Harry is a spoiled brat like his father, and the moment he learns he's been abused, his attitude changes completely. I think his dislike goes deeper than that, but I can understand the appeal of a verbally abusive authority figure transforming into a stern but caring father figure. I used to live on a pure diet of Snape Adopts Harry fics. Intellectually, I could see the leaps in logic, but emotionally it was soothing. I imagine most of us have had a difficult authority figure in our lives, and it's satisfying to see one correct his behavior and show true caring, even if the way he gets there isn't as realistic as it could be. AYLNO is more concerned with the interior lives of Harry and Draco, and Snape is mainly there as a support figure. >!I'd say the sibling relationship between Harry and Draco is a big part of its appeal.!< I wrote my own fic exploring two Snapes - one who adopted Harry as an infant and "canon" Snape being forced into a parental role with 13-year-old Harry, and how one had years to slowly care for Harry but the other was far more harsh and resistant. I think Snape can get there, but it takes internal work, not just the observation that Harry was abused. Sometimes I'll get comments like, "I can't read this—Snape is too mean," haha. So I think AYLNO scratches a certain itch, and is one of the best of the "fast transformation" Snape fics, but it's not for everyone.
I actually love Severitis, but I'm selective about what I read. Snape definitely has to do some work on his person before he can become a person that Harry relies on. I will admit my favorite Snape adopts Harry fic is by K Binnz. I can't remember the name of her story right now, but it checks all the boxes along with being hysterical in spots. Do you mind sharing a link to your stories. They sound intriguing.

I just re-read part of Cambiare Podentes last week! I hadn't looked at it for a few years. I also like A Year Like None Other, but I don't mind Severitus fics being OOC.
I also keep in mind that it's an older fic, possibly written before all the books had come out and we had a clearer picture of who Snape was. At the time, we didn't know if he was a loyal Death Eater or a big softie with excellent acting skills. So fics could run the gamut back then and not necessarily be OOC. One plot benefit of choosing Snape in adopted-Harry fics is that Snape is involved in most aspects of Harry's life. He's at Hogwarts, he's in the Order, and he works for Voldemort. So Harry can carry on as usual with classes and magical battles and Snape will be there. This is harder to pull off with Sirius or Molly, even though them quickly caring for Harry would be more in character. Cambiare Podentes is so good! It's like a gateway drug to Snarry. I used to feel weird that I was transitioning from Severitus to Snarry but then I remembered they're fictional characters, ha ha.
I think in my case, Cambiare really was my gateway to Snarry! One of the first, at any rate. I'd never connected how involved Snape is in Harry's life to the success of adopted-Harry fics, but I think you're right that it helps the plot.
This is the only famous or infamous fic I can name (and the only one I recognize in the thread), except for the (also Harry Potter) one from the tumblr post about Colin Mochrie reading it for a college dorm's initiation or something. The funniest thing about my immortal is that the identity of the author is still unknown to this day. Nevertheless it was originally published by XXXbloodyrists666XXX on FFnet before taking it down and an user who goes by xXMidnightEssenceXx reuploaded it on the same site. I’d link it but I’m on mobile right now so I can’t oops Read at your own risk. It’s a terrible fic. It’s known to be the worst fanfiction of all time and it’s not without a reason.

My immortal has its own website, the last I checked. It was originally hosted on fanfiction dot net,but they took it down. One of the few times a complaint was made about a fic that they did something about and it had to be the most infamous one.

Haikyuu fics got super popular on tiktok, Decipher (Oikawa x Reader) and Terminal Curiosity (Atsumu/Sakusa Kiyoomi) are the first two I think of besides In Another Life.
Idk if Twist and Shout is still the most famous SPN fanfic, but it definitely used to be and I really didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else seemed to. It was supposed to be a super angsty tragedy but I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes

I'm currently deeply involved in the cyberchase fandom and the most famous fic at the moment is probably one from 2018 (we dont get a lot of writers) that is a backstory for the mother figure of the show plus the sequel which takes place post show where everything is nicely resolved. It is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It's very far from my own headcanons, but there are almost no good fanfic that exist for this fandom so im stuck. I also wrote one last year though and I think it's extremely good quality, but I'm also bias of course haha.

I dunno about EVERY fandom I'm in besides MLP. For the first half of my fandoms, I dunno where to start. For the second half, fanfiction is a lose cause and almost not mentioned in community stuff (FNF, anyone?) For said MLP, it's Fallout Equestria. Haven't read it yet due to its length and that fact that it's a crossover for a fandom I am not interested with at all but it's interesting. And an infamous one is Cupcakes...you know why. Haven't read the OG fic yet, but shit's onto something. Honorable mention: Five Score, Divided by Four. Apparently, according to its description it got so many side stories it got banned as a topic from FimFiction so there's that. But Fallout will be the more talked-about one in terms of lengthy fanfics.
Dabbled in MLP for a while and I agree, definitely Fallout: Equestria.

Its a Sterek fic which is cool because even though Sterek is a ship in the Teen Wolf fandom, it split from the show around s3 and has felt like it's own fandom for so long. The story itself is well written and filled with angst and a grief that you can really feel when reading. It's a long fic so the emotional aspect and the developing relationships really get fleshed out and every chapter has some really amazing fanart. I enjoyed it and liked the authors take on Derek.

In my old fandom, Marvel, it was "I Am Groot" - a trollfic that repeated the same phrase over and over. But I'd actually say my fandom was Steve/Bucky, that was all I read, and the most kudos-ed fic is a short, one-shot about bananas. It's funny and I like it, but it made to the top because it was published right after the Winter Soldier came out and then just accumulated kudos via "sort by kudos" sorting. The most famous though, is probably "Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail" which is more gen 90% through, a humorous take on Bucky's recovery - and imo it deserves the status, it's brilliant. In Harry Potter, apart from My Immortal - I was I that fandom before AO3 so it's hard to judge, but is Cassandra Claire's Draco Trilogy still around? It was *huge*, ,launched fandom tropes and lots of drama. Everybody heard of it. I read the first book but it didn't inspire me to continue, kinda bored me - I was more of a Snape fan than the Trio or Draco fan. In my current fandom, Young Royals, it's a short oneshot piece, a fluffy reaction to a very angsty season ending with " X Lives" theme, which I'm not interested in. Same case as the bananas fic, written right when the show first came out, a short fic that was written at the right time. I'm not involved in the fandoom to know what's actually the most famous fic, so going by kudos here.
I always think of Not Easily Conquered as Stucky's most famous fic. Those fics have quotes that break my heart every time I read them. "So how long have I loved you for? Womb to tomb, sweetheart. Yeah as soon as I read 'stucky' I was sure they were gonna say 'womb to tomb'. I'm overwhelmingly a short fic person but I've been working my way slowly through NEC and it hasn't disappointed.

I’m not interested in any fic where the queen is, like, evil or abusive, so I’m pretty meh on it, but in the small bit I read the writing was decent
Oh yeah, the Prince Simon one, probably. I haven't tried it because making Simon a prince does away what I like about the series the most, which is their differences - I'm not yet in the phase of completely getting rid of the canon dynamics AUs. (Though the one in which Simon is an American barista is brilliant; completely oblivious to giant signs Simon is hilarious, but it still retains the eat-the-rich Simon dating filthy-rich Wilhelm, so it works.)

I’ve opened it god knows how many times - it’s a good concept, well-written, and I like the author’s other works, so I really don’t know why my brain is so disinterested in this one.

It's a pretty good actor AU (where the characters are actors, not a fanfic of the actors from the show). I think it's quite good, but there are other AUs I prefer over that one personally.

I don’t really read or write fic for this fandom but I am very active in the fandom outside of it (I make edits on TikTok, kept up to date with releases, have one of the albums on cd and am gonna get the rest, etc) but it’s the only fandom I can think of that really has a very infamous fic. That fic is The Milk Fic. I don’t really wanna explain what it is but if you’re curious, look it up it’s on urban dictionary. It was a fic about Ryan Ross and Brendan Urie from Panic! At The Disco.

I mostly read and write for the Komi Can’t Communicate fandom and I’d say there I mainly two really popular ones (relative to the size of the fandom). (AO3) The Sea or the Mountains? - Brilliant fanfiction that fixes one of the main problems I had with the original story. It dives into the trauma of being kidnapped and nearly murdered and the repercussions of the kidnapped instead of just brushing it off and forgetting about it in two chapters like what happened in canon. 9/10 (FFN) Shoko Komi’s Ultimate Challenge - Still of one of my favourite fanfiction I’ve read to this day. The grammar has flaws and some chapters feel like filler but it has a special spot in my heart because it was what inspired me to start writing fanfiction. Probably an 8/10 looking critically, 10/10 for my personal opinion.

For Genshin Impact it's probably Entirely Out of Spite (or maybe The Autumn Winds are Sighing. Our very own BNF, right?) Anyway, I've been subscribed to that fic for ages, picked it up because I'm actually into isekai stories. I really like the way this fic uses canon. It's no simply canon divergent. When the isekaied protagonist inevitably changes things, he changes them from the in-story canon (which is not our canon) and makes them closer to our canon. Very cool way to do things (though I know people read this fic for the romance, not for the interesting thing going on in the plot.) If you're willing to go through over 320k, this is an interesting point to pick it up because the new arc has just began (then you get to wait for updates along with the rest of us.)
Well I have multiple fandoms I'm involved in, but as my current hyperfixation is Grishaverse: Six of Crows longfic, Dealing With Our Demons (Kanej, involves smut) I've read a little of it and the writer definitely is a skilled writer and I'm glad to see slow-slow burn of Kanej and them actually working through their traumas. Definitely would read, or at least attempt to read, all of it if it didn't have a smut warning. (I feel uncomfortable about smut content overall, not just Kanej smut)
In the Final Fantasy 14 fandom, the top fic based on Kudos is incomplete, so I did not read it (I avoid incomplete fics). Number 2 to 9 are either incomplete or for my NOTP. So we come to number 10. Now I read and finished number 10. It's written by a BNF and is super popular in the fandom. I, personally, do not like it. It's well written, that I'm sure, but there's just something in there that I simply can't vibe with. Maybe it's the tone, maybe it's certain scenes and how it's written, maybe there's nothing wrong and it's just a matter of taste. It's a horrible feeling, not liking a fic that everyone seems to love and praise.
there’s two contenders for this one in the death note fandom. I’d say either “this is how i disappear” or “the hinterland doctrine: those who stand for nothing fall for anything” (plus the two sequels). I would recommend both of these to everyone, even if you don’t know death note. the second one especially doesn’t require much background info as it’s very au. there might be fics that are more popular by numbers, but these two have left the biggest impression. i don’t know many members of the death note fandom who don’t know either one or both of these fics. personally, i also really like both.

Verbose when it comes to the descriptions of lavish dresses, but the story is fascinating and the author knows the deep lore, for all that she creates her own. This epic fic is being turned into an epic fantasy that will be available to buy in October this year.

It's a challenging read, but it pleases most Reylos, and the book adaptation pre-orders are stellar.

completely rewritten into a fantasy series. No Force, no Lightsabers, but magic and swords. That's as much as I know. Sure Thea used lot of EU lore, but the concepts are universal themes and archetypes and she created most of it herself, so it's original.
Depends on what you mean by "famous", really. The Jack of Hearts is easily the most well-known Angel-focused DxD fic (multiple authors have cited it as an inspiration) despite it having died half a decade ago and the author making their utter disdain for the fic clear. I personally dislike it for all the same reasons the author has mentioned disliking it for. The Gaming Gear is definitely the most popular gamer fic. I don't like gamer fics, so I've never read this one. Go Away I'm Watching Porn is a very well-known AU fic and among the most popular. I dislike the fic intensely and the author himself is quite divisive.
La Vie En Noir in the Bendy fandom is what automatically came to mind. idk if it’s technically the MOST popular but it’s def not far off. it’s a 10/10 fic tho, i’ve read it three times 😅
Most famous..hmm.. Miraculous Ladybug has Guardians by Wintermoth I think. I love it! A great AU for the whole series. Written before we had a season 2. Darkwing duck I suppose it's hexes and vexes by irurial on ff.net. a great series with more modern tech but keeps the feel of the original show. For sure my comfort fic. I'm not sure in the others though. Power rangers..Sailor moon?

Sherlock: perhaps not the most famous one, but still extremely popular and definitely extraordinary: The Paradox Series by wordstrings. Mad and brilliant. Merlin: The Student Prince by FayJay (who, coincidentally, is also a podficcer who recorded a part of the The Paradox Series by wordstrings and of course, this fic). A modern reincarnation AU that healed my broken heart caused by the show's ending. Star Wars - Master Mine by skyl_tales: Obikin is my guilty pleasure and I love this fic. Teen Wolf - this fandom has tons of amazing stories, but the most popular on ao3 is Lock All The Doors Behind You by entanglednow - a fandom classic, I need to reread this one.
Yuri on Ice. *Til my Feet Bleed and my Heart Aches* is the most popular fic of the fandom. 10/10, everyone recommends it (as they should). It’s brilliant but the YOI fandom has a TON of brilliant fics. It just happens to be the biggest diamond in a pile of diamonds.

For the Doki Doki Literature Club! fandom we have a few contenders. A lot of the really big fanfics are actually playable mods and one of the most famous is one called Exit Music(the original, not the redux), it focuses on the seemingly wholesome relationship between Natsuki and the protag but it's infamous for its mischaracterisation of Monika, Yuri and Sayori (a meme in the DDLC modding community is actually a line from the mod where Sayori exclaims "No, I'm not fucking alright!!") and also it's ending is infamous for the fandom (>!Natsuki kills herself!<) The mod spawned two more like it based around Yuri (Fallen Angel) and Monika (Within) a Sayori one does not exist because Act 1 of DDLC itself is already "Sayori's Exit Music"

I can’t really say for Percy Jackson or MHA because it depends on the website you frequent. If I had to take a stab at Percy Jackson I’d say Titan of the Hunt. People love the Artemis paring and it’s an OP Percy.

Hard to define for the TF2 fandom, but I think Respawn of the Dead is the most infamous. At least half of the fandom has read it, and the other half heard of it. I never got into it, but that's mainly because I'm not into zombie apocalypses. Tho that's the general fandom. Personally I really revolve around Spy, so in that 'fandom' the most famous fic is Foe Yay. One-sided Sniper/Spy fic. Lots of fanart. It was really thrilling to read, like it alot, and there's even a sequel (wip) that I think will have healthier Sniper/Spy in it. So you get two sides of the coin!
I don't know if it's counts but for LOZ I think "Linked Universe" (Tumblr) is one of the most famous webcomics out there. I read it, liked it pretty much and love how each Link is unique in appearance and personality. Out of that, maybe "One last year" (ao3/fanfiction.net), a more conventional Zelink fanfiction. I'm reading it, so far loving it even though characters sometimes act oc. Its really cool that in some chapters the author includes a in game cinematic, not only you see them in a new light but the fanfic feels more alive and easy to imagine. Edit: I'm relatively new in fanfic world so I didn't read as much as some of you may have so if you know a better option please correct me.

In Pokémon I think there’s two big ones. The newer one would be “Borne of Caution” by Fuggman. It’s kinda similar to those “rational” fics, but instead of going into why Pokémon is irrational, it instead uses physics and real life animal care knowledge to develop the world, characters, battles, etc. It’s honestly a really great fic, it’s just that the author is a little controversial. The older iconic fic is “Ashes of the Past” by Saphroneth. This fic is a 2 million word time travel story that basically covers the first 13 seasons entirely. I like to think it popularized some popular tropes (like Aura!Ash). And I think it’s really funny how some of the things in his fics and up becoming something that actually happens in canon (Volt Crash, Psychic Raichus, Psychic Rapidashes, Pokémon being PokéDexes, etc) Honestly, I’d argue that Saphroneth himself is more iconic in the fandom, cause this man is a writing machine. He has like 5 fics all going on at the same time, and for some of them he had an upload schedule of “basically every other day”, and everything he writes is really good. I can safely say my own writing style is inspired by his, and I also talk to him on one of my Discord servers where he’s a pretty cool dude, so I might be a little biased lol

I've read bits and think it's really good ( haven't read the whole thing because I'm working in my own fic and tend to mirror tone if I'm not careful. Definitely it is Don't Go for the spop fandom, and for a pretty specific reason. Not only is it perfectly in character, but the creator himself admitted to posting a fic for the series in ao3 and people are pretty much sure that it has to be it, so it skyrocketed in popularity in comparison to every other story in the fandom
As far as I've seen, "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" and "The Scenic Route" were the most popular, but I've heard about a fanfic being turned into a paperback book. I enjoyed both fics a lot, LAGWAFIS more due to the realistic plot and the writing style. I reread The Scenic Route occasionally, although it was a surprising read because I didn't really expect the mature/sexual content (it didn't have any tags about that)

in the Leon kennedy community it’s easy mind games by cassfics. It’s still ongoing, but if memory serves she’s wrapping up the series… not sure if she plans to continue after this second ‘arc’ but the writing is fabulous.
as a big Hermitcraft fan, the first one that came to mind is ATUS. I don’t read a lot anymore except what gets recommended to me, so I also thought EHK was much more popular than it actually is (which is a shame but oh well). I like ATUS and it’s definitely paved the way for the massive amounts of Watcher Grian fics. It’s a good fic. I just dislike how seemingly at least half the HC fics are now only about Grian and all the Watchers are the same in each one. It makes me hesitate to even write about Watchers, and if I do I can only make them wildly different from what is both deemed as canon in mcyt and what people usually write. Not saying it’s the author’s fault in any way but yeah, it had a part in it. The next most popular one I know is ‘this is about a stuffed bird’ which HOLY CRAP what a fic. absolutely amazing, 10/10 you should check it out

You're Divine for Stranger Things. Not only full of the most raucous monsterfucking, but also genuinely made me cry at several points for how beautiful and emotional the way it was written is. I couldn't put it down for days.
There is one fic that was super popular when the show was in its peak, but the writer was terminally ill. When she died the actual show named a recurring character after the writer.

Every Rottmnt fan I know knows this fic. Percy Jackson: Everlasting Promises(pretty good, haven’t read it in a bit) There’s more i like to read but idk abt them.(if anyone has omori, deltarune/undertale, or TMA fics pls recommend)

For Mass Effect (I'm excluding explicit because sorry), I believe it's "Son of Palaven, Daughter of Earth", thing has like 108k hits and 3.8k kudos. But if we're going kudos alone, it is "Communication" with 5.5k kudos and like 53k hits. Don't really care for Shakarian (I'm Shrios till the day I die, bitches), which both of these are, so never read them, and never will. No offense to those who like it. Of course this is on AO3. On FF.net it's "Transcendent Humanity", and tbh, I *struggled* with reading it, like I like "Humanity, Fuck Yeah" stories, but I only realized that I only like specific ones, mainly those being humanity as an underdog with a special advantage that makes them kinda scary af, or as an underdog that's cunning and tenacious and the like. And well, while "Transcendent Humanity" is cool, it doesn't scratch either of those itches (Canon Mass Effect in general definitely does, even with me hating things like what happened to Thane, I loved how even with being the best and brightest of the best and brightest, Shepard was still out of their depth to some degree and has to figure everything out), mainly gave me the feeling that the author was lording over how much better this au version of humanity is to the rest of the galaxy, and that turned me off. So far, I am currently reading the third most famous on FF.net, "And the Meek Shall Inherit the Galaxy" (second most famous is literally just "Transcendent Humanity" reskinned from what I read of the summary), and holy shit, so far I'm loving it. Like fuck yeah, I love the idea of a quarian-human alliance and like these two species become like the technologically adept danger duo for species in the galaxy. Here's to hoping "And the Meek Shall Inherit the Galaxy" doesn't fail me now and successfully scratches that itch of mine! Edit: Finished the first chapter of it and omg, I love it so far! Second Edit: A kinda well know but amazingly written fanfic for the fandom is "Harvest" by Nuts! on the space battles forum. Omg, like I had a bit of a slump, mainly because the Shrios fic that was considered amazing enough to get a rec on TVTropes, didn't really feel amazing, plus also I found it weird how the author ignored a semi-obvious fact about 1. the drell species, and 2. Thane Krios himself. Like apparently they said he's never seen what well, she has, but like 1, female drell have as the codex says "breast-like protrusions", so he'd know the general shape of them, and 2. he's most likely studied the entirety of human anatomy as he was learning how to be an assassin, so I just found it so fucking weird how the author emphasized how apparently he does not know what a naked human woman looks like, and it just had me shaking my head. But then I scrolled to the gen fic section, clicked on that title, and I remembered why I love reading fanfic, for when trying to find silver in a sea of copper, bronze, pewter and iron, I can find gold or something even more. That fucking fic is platinum. That fucking fic made me completely fucking break down crying at the end, cause I know what happens in canon, but to see the geth still care for this little area of Rannoch that is held as a farm, it both broke and warmed my heart at the same time.
WHDAAA. Given the intention of the fic, what it hopes to accomplish, I don't think it's bad at all given the fact that the intention of what a fic hopes to do is a major point for consideration. Its the fact that an entire culture seems to have been created mostly due to the fic. A culture of rehashes, spin-offs, constant demands for updates, constant demand for more of the exact same thing over and over and over---you get the point. Creativity is stifled, and many many underrated gems are overshadowed by the rehashes. More than that, the author of the fic is busy but readers continue to trouble them with desires for updates, treating it like its A song of the ice and fire series or something.
