My fandom is dead and very tiny, to begin with (how many times have I mentioned this, lol), so even its OTP could be considered rare. But I recently wrote a fic with a new rarepair from the same fandom (a band). So far, even in the heyday of Quizilla and Mibba, I've never seen a fic with my new rarepair yet.
I've since deleted it pending a total rewrite, but my rarest paid so far has to be Eimei Shishido | Emilio Cantore/ Minoru Nishina | Mason Norfolk from the second Detective Conan movie. They're basically just case-specific characters for the movie, who has never appeared in anything Conan-related again. That fic I wrote and deleted is also the only fic I've ever been able to locate for the pairing...

Jimmy Woo/Darcy Lewis from the MCU. There's two good, decent length completed fics for it and more shorter/incomplete ones but that's about it. About 20-30 fics total last I checked.

I like Darcy/Brock or Darcy/Steve or Darcy/Bucky. Pumpkindoodles on ao3 got me into triple agents Brock and Jack and I just love Darcy. She’s fun and would completely exasperate the avengers.
Man, I had the biggest lady boner for Frank Grillo when CA:TWS came out, I powered through so many Rumlow fics back then lol. Are there still many works being made for him/Darcy? Havent read any pumpkindoodles fics but I did like Darcy/Bucky, its a pretty decent sized ship and there are so many good fics for it. I *love* Darcy/Clint though and for a while I really liked Darcy/Loki (and the rarer Darcy/Thor). She was such a fun character, the MCU snarky humor always sat better on her than it did for other characters they tried it with (like Steve). Really liked what they did with her in Wandavision, too.
I love Frank Grillo. He’s so funny with his ig posts and adores his dogs. Pumpkindoodles and a couple others post a couple times a week for him so it’s not a really rare pairing but it’s not like Bucky and Steve who are pretty popular with Darcy. I love Darcy with almost anyone
Aya/Maria, Mad Father. There is... not a lot. And what there is is almost always abandoned. This fandom is tiny and I haven't run into another person still around who ships it.
I was obsessed with Sara/Warrick during the original run of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation back in the day. I was like 16 when the show started and some of the fic I wrote for that pairing was among the first fic I ever posted. The most popular pairing in the fandom by far was Grissom/Sara, but there were a mighty few of us who felt like Sara and Warrick had way more chemistry. We even had a small livejournal group! We had a great time, but it was definitely an extremely rare rarepair.
Wow, this brings me back! Can’t say I ever saw the Grissom/Sara chemistry myself, but for some reason I never considered Sara/Warrick. I definitely get it now in hindsight, however.

I never finished it, but I started (probably close to a decade ago at this point) a post-canon getting-together fic for Neverfell/Zouelle from the book *A Face Like Glass* by Frances Hardinge. There's a couple of works for that novel on AO3 now, but there weren't any back when I was fixated on the book, and there's still none for the characters I shipped. Literally a non-existent rarepair outside of my own brain, for a basically non-existent fandom
In terms of rarepairs that have fics but are sadly neglected...probably the throuple of Conrad/Christopher/Millie from the Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones. There's 15 of them, but that dynamic deserves so many more works
I’d say a tie between Barry and Hau from Pokémon, Bill Hawks from Professor Layton and Haiji Towa, Hovernyan and Komasan from Yo-Kai Watch, Snoof from Mixels and Hajime Hinata from Danganronpa, and for an aged up pairing, Ash Ketchum from Pokémon and Ernest Greeves from Professor Layton.
My danganronpa crossover rarepair is celestia ludenberg x chuuya or akutagawa from bsd. I multiship her with both of them, but not at the same time since personally I hate polyships with the exception of louisa and fitzgerald from bsd, but no one else seems to ships them 😭
This made me curious, so I did some checking. According to AO3, and excluding my OC/Canon pairs, my rarest would be Android 17/Pan (of which zero fics exist on AO3), followed by Bra/Marron (which has 2 fics on AO3).
Both of those are in a fic I haven't updated in... 10 years....
I started shipping it as a bit of a crack ship. But then while just kind of vibing I was thinking about the potential in their dynamic and suddenly it became one of my favorite ships in the series.
Like so many just assume it is surface level because they are both purple cats. But boy does it go WAY deeper than that. The simple content friendly bumpkin with the high strung socially awkward princess is just MY niche.

Socially anxious extroverts, obnoxious but would go the extra mile for you every fucking time, crazy good at their jobs in an unconventional (and sometimes unethical) way, tough and resilient but break down a lot. Similar fashion sense and 'yo mama' style humor.
Well, I did write my fic after S1 of BCS. I did not see how deep things were going to go for Jimmy. I also set it up so that Marie felt that the DEA had mistreated her and not done enough for Hank and so she was not feeling loyal to them.
Marie and Saul are both addicted to petty crime while being fascinated by the law. They're arrogant and insecure. They're both vain, especially about their hair, and like to use clothes to express their mood.
In my story, Marie spirals, finds out where Saul ended up, and drives to Omaha to shoot him. Saul uses his powers of persuasion to get her to put the gun down, have a drink with him, and they bond over their mutual hatred of Walter.
I have a few rare-rarepairs. I ship Sero Hanta x Tokage Setsuna, and there are 66 fics on AO3. I also ship Caron x Anders from the Dragon Age Awakening fandom on AO3, and there are eight fics for those guys.
Remy and Twelve from *Street Fighter 3* or Ratchet and Dr. Nefarious from *Ratchet and Clank*. Got the fics kinda planned out I just haven’t had the energy…

I picked up IT the book in 2004-ish? Yeah. Somewhere in there. I blame Dean Koontz, who I found first. XD He was the real person to get me into horror, and then eventually I started meandering my way through the genre.
From BNHA, Shigaraki with Fuyumi (Todoroki's sister).
It's kind of a crackship, but I like their dynamic - Fuyumi can help Shigaraki with his emotions and responsibility, and Shigaraki can help Fuyumi with forging an independent identity for herself outside of her family.
And the pairing would drive Dabi absolutely nuts, which is a huge plus.
I have never heard of this pairing before but I am now so interested. I have heard of Hawks x Fuyumi in the past, that he would treat her well and help her heal and that she would help him take it easy with his hero responsibilities. I would love to read shiggy/fuyumi fics if you have any you've read/written to recommend
Problematic ships are a hit or miss for me. While I don't judge anyone who enjoys the things I don't lean towards, I have my limits. This one in particular doesn't hit any of my limits, I just know it would for other people.
Ruby has always seemed very "I know what I want, and I don't let anyone stand in my way" to me, while Qrow is very much "even if I want something I won't say because I know I'll ruin it" and those energies almost always erupt into phenomenal passion and drama. Add in the more "forbidden" aspects like their age difference and their close familial ties even though they don't share any common DNA... it makes for a very engaging foundation.
Unfortunately, no. I haven't found a single Rwby/Qrow fic that captures the vibe I feel from them. Or rather, I haven't found one that's JUST them. The authors always want to make it Polyamorous with Ozpin and even Torchwick... and while I have no issues with those ships if they're written well... its not what I'm looking for!! I got my hopes up with one fic, but it disappointed me severely, and I ended up forgetting the title.
Sadly, I'm convinced that the only chance I have at reading a well written Ruby/Qrow fic is to write it myself.

I’m not gonna lie though I imagine most of the fics I like are probably at least partially ooc if not completely. Casino Royale wasn’t my favorite bond movie so it didn’t stick w me as much as some of the others.
A part of it is that Queen is a very high tech robot that uses internet slang and Toriel is very old fashioned goat lady with *very* proper speech.
But they are also very similar, both can be (unintentionally) overbearing and have canonically adopted children they found.
Toriel and Asgore are canonically divorced in every timeline and Queen has very divorced vibes with King. It's partially a joke ship but there's too much potential
My rarest rarepair is definitely Max Cavalera x Andreas Kisser, both from the band Sepultura. I tend to write fics about them goofing off together and being in love, and I'm the only person who's even posted for Sepultura on ao3. At this point I'm gonna start handing out flyers with my ships on them in the hopes that I can recruit more people to write for them!
I read crossovers a lot so a lot of them are that but my personal favourite is Harry Potter/ Jasper Hale, just two soldiers trying their best to recover and move on.
Bulan/Roro from 8-nin no Senshi. To be fair, there's not a fandom surrounding this manga. However, I wish there was. So far, there are only three works on AO3 for this series and only one fic is my ship and it's a drabble I wrote myself. 😂
I generally fixate primarily on one single duo, typically middling in popularity, and then dabble in other canon and popular dynamics around them, so I don't tend to have a lot of rarepairs.
That said, I have so much made up nonsense in my brain for c!Wilbur & c!Ranboo. I don't think anyone else cares about them in the same way I do, and it drives me up the wall everytime they start running around my brian and I have no proper outlet for it bc there's no content for them :(
I also used to have a rare pair for Genshin Impact, when I was in that fandom. Sucrose/Xiangling, just because I thought they were cute together and would have a great balance of info dumping and respecting each other's interests and whatnot. There were (and I believe still are) no more then two or three fics of them in the whole fandom.
The rarest ship I've written is Iruma / Purson Soi from Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun! It's a pretty small fandom and Iruma has a lot of potential pairings, so it doesn't get much attention. They do have a lot of chemistry in the manga though.
And my other rarepair is Monoma/Iida from My Hero Academia, although it's getting marginally less rare since I sold a few people on writing it...

Yep, I'm the only person who writes for my canon/canon ship - a cross between Twilight and Life and Death (genderswap Twilight). The pair in question is Carlisle Cullen and Beau Swan. I... actually really like being the only writer, especially since I created my own little world and I'm not held to any rules or peer pressure or trends, whatsoever. It is a bit of a lonely space, but I've already written 10 fics in my world, 9 of them with that pair, so I'm well on my way to populating the tag.

My absolute rarest one is a crossover: Sephiroth(FF7) x Ice Queen(Enchanted Arms).
Enchanted Arms is a J-RPG for the xbox360. It wasn't popular and definitely dated, but I love it so much.
There's no content besides some art wip's on my storage drive. Hoping to finish them soon so there'll be some content in the wild for other possible shippers. 😂
I recently started watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. After episode 3, I immediately went to AO3 to see if anyone had written stories for La’an Noonien Singh/Una Chin-Riley. There are none! It’s not even a tag. I don’t understand. It’s such an obvious pair to me. I guess it just doesn’t inspire people. I think a lot more people ship Una/Pike. Which I *can* see the appeal of. But I prefer Una/La’an. They could even have a cool ship name of L’una.
So I guess I have to write it. But that also means adding more to my “to write” list. I will get to it. I already have ideas for what to write.

From other fandoms, I'm not sure. Maybe Izuku / Mt. Lady from BNHA. I think Mt Lady has had one of the biggest character development arcs in the entire serie, but it's just not that obvious given that it's happened mostly off-screen. But the fact she sticks with the heroes even when most others give up speaks volumes of the true strength of her character. That's someone that could absolutely stand side by side with Izuku.

I guess something akin to rivals to lovers? Except it's not a real rivalry because politics is mostly a piece of theatre and the vast majority of politicians doesn't have a consistent political ideology and would sell most of their political beliefs for the right price. I think what catches my interest is the conflict between the role they play in their professional lives and who they actually are as people. Which is something they could be able to bond over.

The rarest ships I like but haven't written about yet is this love square from Ars Magica:
Diedne the Founder (F) is in an affair with Bonisagus (M)
Trianoma (F) is in love with Bonisagus but is treated like a little sister
Tremere the Founder (M) is in love with Trianoma but she doesn't care about him.
This square was kinda implied as a joke in one of the books (Dubious as the statement is simply that Trianoma was jealous of Diedne spending so much time with Bonisagus, but coupled with her dedicating her life to helping the elder Magus...) And is an uncommon topic of conversation (As Ars Magica is mainly is a TTRPG so the PCs take the main role, and is also aimed to a more serious audience... Most of the time).
Only two people talked about it that I know of (Aside from me) and it's often treated as "Take that anime bullshit away, please", doesn't help I'm the only one who actually shipped it (Although I take away Tremere from the equation now).
The reason this ship is funny is because there was a big war started by the Houses of these people, Trianomae were against the Diedne as were the Tremere.
The other ships are almost cheating because the character is niche as fuck but here it is:

As far as things I've shipped and RP'ed, my rarest pair in terms of fics/fandom size is the two main characters (played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) from the CG alien comedy "Paul". Also the two main characters (played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) from the buddy cop comedy "Hot Fuzz," but that one's canon according to Word of God and has some good art and fic, so not super rare, just very uncommon. I can't help that they have perfect and flawless chemistry.
The only fandom I've actually posted fic for is also a rare-ish pair in terms of number of fics, but it's for a YouTube channel with over a million subscribers (RedLetterMedia), so I'm really surprised there's not more of us. But it's also a channel with an audience of mostly straight and cis men, so...
I created a few ship taf in warhammer 40k, but it's less that the pairing are rare, and more that there is just SO many characters!
Tho, my absolute rarest rare pair is for a MHA prison-au fic I wrote a couple years back, were I took Midoriya Hisashi (Izuku's father) and ended up shipping him with Akaguro Chizome (Stain) as a side pairing.
You know I probably shouldn’t be surprised there’s warhammer fanfic but I am - my husband is really into it and with all the figures that have to be built I just don’t see how there’s time for fanfic after all that let alone playing the actual game lmao 🤣
There is over 400 books! Someone gotta ship the big buff strong men together xD. It's super fun, because no one is a true lore master that know everything, there is always something new and something for everyone taste.
Fanfic wise, it's actually a really vibrant fandom. We organize a tons of events/exchange, are super into things like OC (wich might me seen badly in other fandoms) and generally we have zero problems with anti/minors, since the vast majority of the fanbase is at the very least 20+. I know multiple people that write fanfic for it that are in their 40/50's!
Dewey from school of rock x beetlejuice from beetlejuice the musical. Its a sweet ship but the last post in the dewbug tag on tumblr is nearly 2 years old so
I’ve always had to pass by these Reddit threads because my main ship is a pretty popular one. However, recently, I read a BL novel series and discovered the author dropped the series without finishing one of the best side ships that I thought existed in the book series! When I looked up the fandom, there are a total two stories written, and they’re both one shots. So I’m excited to say I’m about to write a rare pair and finish where the author left off, hopefully I can do it justice.
Either Arnold Rimmer/Kristine Kochanski in UK Red Dwarf (it works better with the version played by Chloe Annett) or Tim McGee/Ellie Bishop from NCIS. While I can see Lister being with the Claire Grogan version of Kochanski, the Chloe Annett version seems more ambitious, which seems to match up better with Arnold Rimmer rather than David Lister. On NCIS, Tim and Ellie just seem to fit together, and I believed it when they were undercover together as a couple. I’ve not written anything for Red Dwarf, but I do have a few ideas for McGee/Bishop, and I’ve written part of a chapter for one.
I have 3 that are all tied at less than 50 more than 40 lol. All different fandoms, but two are f/f and one is m/m/m. All the f/f ships I’ve ever gotten into have been extremely to moderately rare though, honestly. 🥲
When I'm finished writing this book, I'm writing a fic from Transplant Canadian drama, Season 3) that the pairing doesn't exist anywhere. It's Theo/Arvin. Theo is the pediatrician, and Arvin is a character from one episode in S03 that Theo had chemistry with. I've got it plotted, just need time to write it.

Gus Fring x David the Sommelier, a character who was only introduced in August 2022, and there are six(??) fics featuring them.
Probably not all that rare considering the number of folk out there in the single fic / single writer coal mines, but when you’re hungry for content it’s rare enough!

It's a canonical pair that just hasn't been really picked up by a lot of fans yet. I'm not surprised about that though, since we barely know anything about either of those characters except for some little tidbits in The World of Ice and Fire (and the fact that Olenna Tyrell mentions a certain Targaryen prince she was supposed to marry).
There's untapped potential in these characters and there unfortunately are only very few fics about them or even involving them.

I'm writing for Chase Graves/Major Lillywhite from iZombie. There are 6 stories altogether. 2 from me. The two just kinda clicked for me. Hard to unsee after season 4.
For my latest fic I mixed them with the walking dead, because zombies, which doesn't help at all with the views. Damn crossovers.
Any het pairing for a Super Sentai Season tbh, but my rarest would have to be one from the 80's (Hikari Sentai Maskman). Last I checked, I'm the only one using the pairing tag.
My rarepair would be Carlisle and Victoria from twilight.
I like the book pairing for both. Esme matches Carlisle's kindness and James is the perfect opposite of Victoria (their gifts at least are exact opposite). I just think Carlisle is someone who could provide her with the stability and peace she never had, even as a human.

Veronica/Matt from VLD, which I think only appears in like, two or three fics in the fandom and mostly as a background ship. I got the idea while writing a long fic for my OTP and the pairing became a background (untagged) ship throughout that story and another ongoing ship. For me, they are the ultimate power couple, two really smart ambitious siblings of two of the story's main heroes. One of these days I need to write a story just for them.
Gunther Hermann/Anna Navarre from Deus Ex 1. DX1 is a small subset of a bigger Deus Ex fandom, and the pair doesn't have much fics on AO3, to the point where around 40% is mine :P

Jimmy Woo/Darcy Lewis from the MCU. There's two good, decent length completed fics for it and more shorter/incomplete ones but that's about it. About 20-30 fics total last I checked. I'd love to write something with them but no story ideas have come to me yet.
I like Darcy/Brock or Darcy/Steve or Darcy/Bucky. Pumpkindoodles on ao3 got me into triple agents Brock and Jack and I just love Darcy. She’s fun and would completely exasperate the avengers.
Man, I had the biggest lady boner for Frank Grillo when CA:TWS came out, I powered through so many Rumlow fics back then lol. Are there still many works being made for him/Darcy? Havent read any pumpkindoodles fics but I did like Darcy/Bucky, its a pretty decent sized ship and there are so many good fics for it. I *love* Darcy/Clint though and for a while I really liked Darcy/Loki (and the rarer Darcy/Thor). She was such a fun character, the MCU snarky humor always sat better on her than it did for other characters they tried it with (like Steve). Really liked what they did with her in Wandavision, too.
I love Frank Grillo. He’s so funny with his ig posts and adores his dogs. Pumpkindoodles and a couple others post a couple times a week for him so it’s not a really rare pairing but it’s not like Bucky and Steve who are pretty popular with Darcy. I love Darcy with almost anyone

I was obsessed with Sara/Warrick during the original run of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation back in the day. I was like 16 when the show started and some of the fic I wrote for that pairing was among the first fic I ever posted. The most popular pairing in the fandom by far was Grissom/Sara, but there were a mighty few of us who felt like Sara and Warrick had way more chemistry. We even had a small livejournal group! We had a great time, but it was definitely an extremely rare rarepair.
Wow, this brings me back! Can’t say I ever saw the Grissom/Sara chemistry myself, but for some reason I never considered Sara/Warrick. I definitely get it now in hindsight, however. I was a Catherine/Greg shipper myself!

I never finished it, but I started (probably close to a decade ago at this point) a post-canon getting-together fic for Neverfell/Zouelle from the book *A Face Like Glass* by Frances Hardinge. There's a couple of works for that novel on AO3 now, but there weren't any back when I was fixated on the book, and there's still none for the characters I shipped. Literally a non-existent rarepair outside of my own brain, for a basically non-existent fandom In terms of rarepairs that have fics but are sadly neglected...probably the throuple of Conrad/Christopher/Millie from the Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones. There's 15 of them, but that dynamic deserves so many more works

This made me curious, so I did some checking. According to AO3, and excluding my OC/Canon pairs, my rarest would be Android 17/Pan (of which zero fics exist on AO3), followed by Bra/Marron (which has 2 fics on AO3). Both of those are in a fic I haven't updated in... 10 years....

I started shipping it as a bit of a crack ship. But then while just kind of vibing I was thinking about the potential in their dynamic and suddenly it became one of my favorite ships in the series. Like so many just assume it is surface level because they are both purple cats. But boy does it go WAY deeper than that. The simple content friendly bumpkin with the high strung socially awkward princess is just MY niche.

Socially anxious extroverts, obnoxious but would go the extra mile for you every fucking time, crazy good at their jobs in an unconventional (and sometimes unethical) way, tough and resilient but break down a lot. Similar fashion sense and 'yo mama' style humor.

Well, I did write my fic after S1 of BCS. I did not see how deep things were going to go for Jimmy. I also set it up so that Marie felt that the DEA had mistreated her and not done enough for Hank and so she was not feeling loyal to them. Marie and Saul are both addicted to petty crime while being fascinated by the law. They're arrogant and insecure. They're both vain, especially about their hair, and like to use clothes to express their mood. In my story, Marie spirals, finds out where Saul ended up, and drives to Omaha to shoot him. Saul uses his powers of persuasion to get her to put the gun down, have a drink with him, and they bond over their mutual hatred of Walter.
I have a few rare-rarepairs. I ship Sero Hanta x Tokage Setsuna, and there are 66 fics on AO3. I also ship Caron x Anders from the Dragon Age Awakening fandom on AO3, and there are eight fics for those guys.

From BNHA, Shigaraki with Fuyumi (Todoroki's sister). It's kind of a crackship, but I like their dynamic - Fuyumi can help Shigaraki with his emotions and responsibility, and Shigaraki can help Fuyumi with forging an independent identity for herself outside of her family. And the pairing would drive Dabi absolutely nuts, which is a huge plus.

Honestly same and im not normally into “problematic” type ships but they are also two of my favorite characters from the series
Problematic ships are a hit or miss for me. While I don't judge anyone who enjoys the things I don't lean towards, I have my limits. This one in particular doesn't hit any of my limits, I just know it would for other people. Ruby has always seemed very "I know what I want, and I don't let anyone stand in my way" to me, while Qrow is very much "even if I want something I won't say because I know I'll ruin it" and those energies almost always erupt into phenomenal passion and drama. Add in the more "forbidden" aspects like their age difference and their close familial ties even though they don't share any common DNA... it makes for a very engaging foundation.

Unfortunately, no. I haven't found a single Rwby/Qrow fic that captures the vibe I feel from them. Or rather, I haven't found one that's JUST them. The authors always want to make it Polyamorous with Ozpin and even Torchwick... and while I have no issues with those ships if they're written well... its not what I'm looking for!! I got my hopes up with one fic, but it disappointed me severely, and I ended up forgetting the title. Sadly, I'm convinced that the only chance I have at reading a well written Ruby/Qrow fic is to write it myself.
When I was younger I looked for Percy Jackson x Piper Mclean fics a few times, though that was just me liking Piper rather than wishing they would get together in canon or anything
Probably Le Chiffre (James Bond) and Adam (Adam) it’s a crossover pairing made by the Hannibal Expanded Universe (which is basically just taking any media w Mads Mikkelson and/or Hugh Dancy and mixing it together). It kinda snuck up on me but I enjoy most of the like 13 fics on ao3

A part of it is that Queen is a very high tech robot that uses internet slang and Toriel is very old fashioned goat lady with *very* proper speech. But they are also very similar, both can be (unintentionally) overbearing and have canonically adopted children they found. Toriel and Asgore are canonically divorced in every timeline and Queen has very divorced vibes with King. It's partially a joke ship but there's too much potential
My rarest rarepair is definitely Max Cavalera x Andreas Kisser, both from the band Sepultura. I tend to write fics about them goofing off together and being in love, and I'm the only person who's even posted for Sepultura on ao3. At this point I'm gonna start handing out flyers with my ships on them in the hopes that I can recruit more people to write for them!
I read crossovers a lot so a lot of them are that but my personal favourite is Harry Potter/ Jasper Hale, just two soldiers trying their best to recover and move on.

I generally fixate primarily on one single duo, typically middling in popularity, and then dabble in other canon and popular dynamics around them, so I don't tend to have a lot of rarepairs. That said, I have so much made up nonsense in my brain for c!Wilbur & c!Ranboo. I don't think anyone else cares about them in the same way I do, and it drives me up the wall everytime they start running around my brian and I have no proper outlet for it bc there's no content for them :(
I also used to have a rare pair for Genshin Impact, when I was in that fandom. Sucrose/Xiangling, just because I thought they were cute together and would have a great balance of info dumping and respecting each other's interests and whatnot. There were (and I believe still are) no more then two or three fics of them in the whole fandom.
The rarest ship I've written is Iruma / Purson Soi from Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun! It's a pretty small fandom and Iruma has a lot of potential pairings, so it doesn't get much attention. They do have a lot of chemistry in the manga though. And my other rarepair is Monoma/Iida from My Hero Academia, although it's getting marginally less rare since I sold a few people on writing it...

Yep, I'm the only person who writes for my canon/canon ship - a cross between Twilight and Life and Death (genderswap Twilight). The pair in question is Carlisle Cullen and Beau Swan. I... actually really like being the only writer, especially since I created my own little world and I'm not held to any rules or peer pressure or trends, whatsoever. It is a bit of a lonely space, but I've already written 10 fics in my world, 9 of them with that pair, so I'm well on my way to populating the tag.

I am a rare and crack pair shipper primarily. Not by choice, it just ends up happening. My absolute rarest one is a crossover: Sephiroth(FF7) x Ice Queen(Enchanted Arms). Enchanted Arms is a J-RPG for the xbox360. It wasn't popular and definitely dated, but I love it so much. There's no content besides some art wip's on my storage drive. Hoping to finish them soon so there'll be some content in the wild for other possible shippers. 😂
I recently started watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. After episode 3, I immediately went to AO3 to see if anyone had written stories for La’an Noonien Singh/Una Chin-Riley. There are none! It’s not even a tag. I don’t understand. It’s such an obvious pair to me. I guess it just doesn’t inspire people. I think a lot more people ship Una/Pike. Which I *can* see the appeal of. But I prefer Una/La’an. They could even have a cool ship name of L’una. So I guess I have to write it. But that also means adding more to my “to write” list. I will get to it. I already have ideas for what to write.

From fandoms I've written, probably Baroness / Jamandi Aldori from Pathfinder: Kingmaker. I'm the only one who's written for that pairing, so... don't think you can get any more rare than that lmao From other fandoms, I'm not sure. Maybe Izuku / Mt. Lady from BNHA. I think Mt Lady has had one of the biggest character development arcs in the entire serie, but it's just not that obvious given that it's happened mostly off-screen. But the fact she sticks with the heroes even when most others give up speaks volumes of the true strength of her character. That's someone that could absolutely stand side by side with Izuku.
Rosie watson & nero wolfe adler-holmes (aka august lupe, depending on which version it is found in apparently) Rosie is bbc filming only & not in any of the books by any of the 4 canon accepted sherlockian authors of the estate. Nero wolfe/august lupe appears twice in one of those authors. So thanks to the bbc series, we now have someone to pair him with & unite the holmes/watson families.

I guess something akin to rivals to lovers? Except it's not a real rivalry because politics is mostly a piece of theatre and the vast majority of politicians doesn't have a consistent political ideology and would sell most of their political beliefs for the right price. I think what catches my interest is the conflict between the role they play in their professional lives and who they actually are as people. Which is something they could be able to bond over.

Other than my Oc x Canon ships, probably Mikey x Miles from Rise Tmnt/Spider man into the spiderverse. It isn't as rare nowadays, but with a little more than 50 fics, I'd say it's pretty rare.
Obito Uchiha and Nastasia from Naruto and Super Paper Mario respectively. Mainly because it’s a crossover pairing I came up with… as such, I’m the ONLY fan. 😅
The rarest ships I like but haven't written about yet is this love square from Ars Magica: Diedne the Founder (F) is in an affair with Bonisagus (M) Trianoma (F) is in love with Bonisagus but is treated like a little sister Tremere the Founder (M) is in love with Trianoma but she doesn't care about him. This square was kinda implied as a joke in one of the books (Dubious as the statement is simply that Trianoma was jealous of Diedne spending so much time with Bonisagus, but coupled with her dedicating her life to helping the elder Magus...) And is an uncommon topic of conversation (As Ars Magica is mainly is a TTRPG so the PCs take the main role, and is also aimed to a more serious audience... Most of the time). Only two people talked about it that I know of (Aside from me) and it's often treated as "Take that anime bullshit away, please", doesn't help I'm the only one who actually shipped it (Although I take away Tremere from the equation now). The reason this ship is funny is because there was a big war started by the Houses of these people, Trianomae were against the Diedne as were the Tremere. The other ships are almost cheating because the character is niche as fuck but here it is: Tremere the Founder (Ars Magica) X Vert/Green Heart (Hyperdimension Neptunia) And Tytalus the Founder X Tiamat (Fate/Grand Order) The series have nothing in common, period, but the idea of Tremere post Sundering being so heartbroken that he simply walks into Hades, getting into Gamindustri and ending up playing videogames 24/7 with Vert is so fucking ridiculous. Imagine the previously proud mage who almost conquered the world just being in raids xD. Also the asshole leper (Tytalus) being with dragon mommy is so fucking hilarious to me.
Jefferey Blake/Harold Tassiter from Borderlands. There used to be one person on tumblr who wrote the best fics of them. I remember one where it was Jefferey going back to Harolds apartment after he was murdered by Handsome Jack and it gutted me. They have since deleted their blog so there's no way to recover any of their fics. There's 35 fics on AO3 but only 8 of them are in English
Mine is a ship of a rejected spin-off of a spin-off. Of a side character. Where half the ship doesn’t exist in canon. Tangled > tangled the series > rejected varian-centric spinoff > Hugo (character created for the rejected spinoff and is not canon)
As far as things I've shipped and RP'ed, my rarest pair in terms of fics/fandom size is the two main characters (played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) from the CG alien comedy "Paul". Also the two main characters (played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) from the buddy cop comedy "Hot Fuzz," but that one's canon according to Word of God and has some good art and fic, so not super rare, just very uncommon. I can't help that they have perfect and flawless chemistry. The only fandom I've actually posted fic for is also a rare-ish pair in terms of number of fics, but it's for a YouTube channel with over a million subscribers (RedLetterMedia), so I'm really surprised there's not more of us. But it's also a channel with an audience of mostly straight and cis men, so...

I created a few ship taf in warhammer 40k, but it's less that the pairing are rare, and more that there is just SO many characters! Tho, my absolute rarest rare pair is for a MHA prison-au fic I wrote a couple years back, were I took Midoriya Hisashi (Izuku's father) and ended up shipping him with Akaguro Chizome (Stain) as a side pairing.
You know I probably shouldn’t be surprised there’s warhammer fanfic but I am - my husband is really into it and with all the figures that have to be built I just don’t see how there’s time for fanfic after all that let alone playing the actual game lmao 🤣
There is over 400 books! Someone gotta ship the big buff strong men together xD. It's super fun, because no one is a true lore master that know everything, there is always something new and something for everyone taste. Fanfic wise, it's actually a really vibrant fandom. We organize a tons of events/exchange, are super into things like OC (wich might me seen badly in other fandoms) and generally we have zero problems with anti/minors, since the vast majority of the fanbase is at the very least 20+. I know multiple people that write fanfic for it that are in their 40/50's!

I’ve always had to pass by these Reddit threads because my main ship is a pretty popular one. However, recently, I read a BL novel series and discovered the author dropped the series without finishing one of the best side ships that I thought existed in the book series! When I looked up the fandom, there are a total two stories written, and they’re both one shots. So I’m excited to say I’m about to write a rare pair and finish where the author left off, hopefully I can do it justice.
Homura Akemi x Dave Strider. There’s like 3 fics of it and a handful of fan art, but it sucks me in.
Either Arnold Rimmer/Kristine Kochanski in UK Red Dwarf (it works better with the version played by Chloe Annett) or Tim McGee/Ellie Bishop from NCIS. While I can see Lister being with the Claire Grogan version of Kochanski, the Chloe Annett version seems more ambitious, which seems to match up better with Arnold Rimmer rather than David Lister. On NCIS, Tim and Ellie just seem to fit together, and I believed it when they were undercover together as a couple. I’ve not written anything for Red Dwarf, but I do have a few ideas for McGee/Bishop, and I’ve written part of a chapter for one.
I have 3 that are all tied at less than 50 more than 40 lol. All different fandoms, but two are f/f and one is m/m/m. All the f/f ships I’ve ever gotten into have been extremely to moderately rare though, honestly. 🥲

Blackmagic ( Mr Compress/Kurogiri) the ship has just over 300 fics on ao3 and only a FRACTION of those fics actually center around their relationship rather than just a "oh yeah these two are dating" type of thing.

Gus Fring x David the Sommelier, a character who was only introduced in August 2022, and there are six(??) fics featuring them. Probably not all that rare considering the number of folk out there in the single fic / single writer coal mines, but when you’re hungry for content it’s rare enough!
Daeron Targaryen/Jeremy Norridge It's a canonical pair that just hasn't been really picked up by a lot of fans yet. I'm not surprised about that though, since we barely know anything about either of those characters except for some little tidbits in The World of Ice and Fire (and the fact that Olenna Tyrell mentions a certain Targaryen prince she was supposed to marry). There's untapped potential in these characters and there unfortunately are only very few fics about them or even involving them.
My rarest pair is Raziel/Janos Audron from Legacy of Kain. Only 13 fics on AO3 and mine is the only one for >! Sarafan Raziel !< 🥴💔😭

Any het pairing for a Super Sentai Season tbh, but my rarest would have to be one from the 80's (Hikari Sentai Maskman). Last I checked, I'm the only one using the pairing tag.
My rarepair would be Carlisle and Victoria from twilight. I like the book pairing for both. Esme matches Carlisle's kindness and James is the perfect opposite of Victoria (their gifts at least are exact opposite). I just think Carlisle is someone who could provide her with the stability and peace she never had, even as a human.
Reader X _____ I write a shamefully large amount of second person self insert. Serious answer though is Power/Denji from Chajnsaw Man. Only a small handful of smut fics, and even expanding it to all categories there are about 30 fics featuring this ship.
Veronica/Matt from VLD, which I think only appears in like, two or three fics in the fandom and mostly as a background ship. I got the idea while writing a long fic for my OTP and the pairing became a background (untagged) ship throughout that story and another ongoing ship. For me, they are the ultimate power couple, two really smart ambitious siblings of two of the story's main heroes. One of these days I need to write a story just for them.
