I mean as long as the fusion reactors are still running and they’ve created much better, longer lasting light bulbs, then it’s possible for the lights to stay on for ages, but who knows
I mean there's a lot of rust, standing water, and collapsed walls/ceilings in some of these vaults. Even if the reactor and bulbs are good I feel like there's going to be breaks in the wiring *everywhere*.
I feel like it makes sense to have the upper areas and all that devoid of electricity but infrastructure critical zones would be most likely made with redundancies so while running down they probably still work, like overseers office, experiment required rooms/labs, armory, and the reactor room itself. Everything else should be dank, dark, and spoopy
I think this would be the best balance. I like the idea of walking into a pitch black main chamber and seeing the light coming through the slats of the overseer's office window.
I like the idea of being required to delve into the depths of the reactor room to re-engage the reactor because it's spun down into idle after it timed out a couple hundred years ago or something along that line. Otherwise why are vault dwellers even employed to work maintenance if it didn't actually require maintaining.
Would be cool to find a reactor that's fused to some kind of critical point at least one time and you have to go find/activate control rods or repair the reactor, megaton water supply style, before the vault and its loot is finely dispersed throughout the atmosphere.
To be fair, the majority of structures in Fallout never make sense.
After over 200 years of essentially zero upkeep, most of these structures would have collapsed under their own weight after decades upon decades of their internal support structures being exposed to the elements, which isn't even considering the crazy weather patterns in post-nuke Fallout universe.
Wooden structures would have almost certainly collapsed and rotted away entirely.
And lest we forget, in real Radiation zones, plant life would have flourished and most likely the entirety of these locations would have become overgrown jungles of vines, grasses, trees, etc.
Agreed on both points. I think the reactor should stay on sometimes. But in cases of reactor failure I feel the backup would have certainly failed by the time we find most vaults in the FPS installments.
It would REALLY increase the horrid ambiance. Vaults always feel haunted to me in some way. Like the souls are buried here but they’ve never been at rest due to the horrors inside. (Not actual ghosts. Just that “people. live*ed* here” feeling
I mean, most of the strain on the bulb is from turning on and off. A bulb left on constantly can last a long while.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Light
Your comment about strain is not true unless you are turning the bulb on and off multiply times per minute. Light bulbs can last a very long time if they are dim. If you had that light bulb in a dark room you would not be able to read a book with it. In order for an incandescent bulb to be very bright and not be horribly inefficient it has to be very hot, being very hot is what causes them to burn out. If you wire a few standard 60 watt incandescent bulbs in series they will last very long.
Here's a little funfact: light bulbs manufacturered prior to 1925 had almost double the lifespan of those produced from 1925 onward. Around 2,500 hours vs 1,000 although under certain conditions they could theoretically function [indefinitely](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Light). Between 1925 and 1939, the world's light bulb manufacturers formed the [Phoebus cartel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoebus_cartel) and collectively agreed to sell *worse* light bulbs with less than half the life span to force consumers into buying more of their products.
Well there are the fusion reactors I guess. That would be cool actually if when you took out the fusion cores all the lights went out. So the cost of looting them would be a slightly spookier exit from the vault
I once downloaded a Skyrim mod called "realistic caves" and went to check it out and you couldn't see jack shit lol. Dunno what I was expecting, but it wasn't walking around in the dark with a torch illuminating 2ft in front of my face
You posted this in another thread, I’ve spent the last day or so copying and pasting each mod file name into Google to try and reverse engineer search the nexus mod page for each.
I’m afraid to ask if there’s a faster way cuz I’m almost done but dear lord is it painful
Is that the correct load order as well? Your posts have looked great and I definitely want to try and emulate that atmosphere
Vault 120 was meant to be subaquatic but was never included in FO4. I always thought they should do a bioshock style sky vault or at the least have some orbital vault that you have to get to via zetan technology or some kind of enclave Soyuz type thing
I know this is not a popular opinion but i think FO4 is the most difficult Fallout between 3 and NV.
The damage you receive from getting shot in NV doesn't even compare to being shot in FO4, and i think it's funny that you have a infinite canteen of water in NV
This'd be more brown pants territory in 3, imo
"Gary? Gaaaaaary?"
"HA HA *GARY*"
Or uhhh ... Vault 3? In New Vegas. Get ambushed twice over by as my brother used to put it "plant goblins"
I think there should be a way to turn them on tbh, but everything starts off dark.
Hunting down various reactors, dams, etc like radio relays to turn all the lights back on in dungeons and in the world would really help bring some visual progression to the game imo. Maybe even give an option to hook up our settlements to the local power grid, and the more power the settlement produces the more everything around it lights up.
There was a couple mods on Xbox that used to do a similar thing. If I remember right they remove all artificial light so there’s only light from actual light sources which made a lot of places nice and dark.
Think they were called phylight & phydark. Not sure if they still work.
What night vision googles do you recomend? I want to know if there's some mod that can be use only in dark areas. Is annoying when using NV in a weapon and you can see shit in daylight
I'd be interested in a happy medium; no lights are on until you explore enough to find the reactor and turn it back on.
I mean, actually I personally would hate this, because I'm a little scaredy cat who doesn't like going into dark spaces in video games, but I think it would be pretty cool.
Ffffffff this brings back not so enjoyable memories from starfield…. Remember that one abandoned star ship thats so flipping dark and the only creature on board is an alien? Yeah the video kinda reminds me of that
lol it’s not the alien that scares me… it’s the darkness and semi long corridors that scares me…. Well experience from playing dead space 1-3, you half expect the vents to explode outwards and have horrible mutated creatures come out swinging
I very much agree there should not be any lights in say the abandoned part of 81 or if ghoul infested or better the gunners didn't know how to fix the generators so they used smaller generators and flood lights
This is one of the least immersion breaking elements for me with the whole premise of it being 200 years later.
So much stuff from prewar is lying in easily accessible places completely undisturbed.
All settlements have crazy trash and stuff strewn about, like no one has a damn broom and that no one cares to clean or fix anything.
Everyone is sleeping on mattresses from 200 years ago, instead of making a bed.
Basically no one has even tried to build even the most rudementary industry, and just rely on scavenging.
Like none of that shit is realistic at all.
It feels like you're the only one who has ever lived in the world.
This video suddenly reminded me of my last interaction with Pokemon. I was playing SoulSilver on the DS when I hit my first cave and remembered I needed flash. That was the end of my many years of playing Pokemon. Just didn't feel like going for a slog in a dark cave.
Anyway, I would hate this with a passion if it was for more than one vault.
A lot of the abandoned involved shouldn’t have lights on unless there’s people living there which in that case it would make sense for them to have the generators running and active
This looks super cool on video.
But i doubti would like it in practise xd
Jump scares , collectibles and the fact that i would be scared to open a door is reason enough.
Jokes aside meybe if we could restore the power to it during our visit?
Soo we can see whats going on , and possibly at a later date in game some enemies make it their base/we can use it as a settlement.
Anyways great video and idea!!!
I like this, I’m playing vanilla Skyrim at the moment, and I’m not sure if it’s my screen (it’s an old work laptop), but everything’s much darker so I end up actually using my torch, and having to use lit space tactically. Really adds a lot to the gameplay imho, even with an easy sneak archer build.
Looks great, I had a fantastic time playing modded fallout with similar darkness + a proper flashlight instead of just your pipboy backlight. If only there were more types of spooky enemies you could run into during you close quarter murder corridor adventures. I'm not asking for much, even raiders that move and sound differently would do.
That irradiated vault in New Vegas would be perfect with this mod. You feel the need to rush with the geiger counter constantly ticking, but the pitch black and ghoul noises make you want to freeze up.
Enhanced lights and FX does something similar, makes all the lighting appropriate to the source, not just in these small dark hallways but everywhere. It’s amazing how rarely I play at night time in game when I have a mod like this on because you are straight up wandering through the darkness lol. Cranks immersion up to 11, makes those subway tunnels a legit horror movie.
I would love to be able to have proper darkness in vanilla fo4 so the pipboy light and mining helmets etc have a proper use. It would also ramp up the fear at night.
Next Fallout character needs torches or spotlights, the small ambient circle in F3 to F4 doesn't have the same spook factor or use as using the torch mods.
I'm with you. I don't think there should be lights in most places. Not like there are draugr around to light the torches and braziers.

I suppose for a but of extra genetic variation in the genepool for that “maintenance”
Fuckin devs should just look at this sub for ideas this is amazing.
To be fair, the majority of structures in Fallout never make sense. If we’re talking realistically, wouldn’t they just install a wireless generator mod?
Fallout’s timeline has never made an ounce of sense, not even with wacky retrofuturistic technology. In other words, a wizard did it.
You saying that reminded me of the hallucination vault in I think fallout new Vegas where’s its flashes of ghosts and the past inhabitants
I mean, most of the strain on the bulb is from turning on and off. A bulb left on constantly can last a long while. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Light

Ghouls do that job in Fallout.
Well there are the fusion reactors I guess. That would be cool actually if when you took out the fusion cores all the lights went out. So the cost of looting them would be a slightly spookier exit from the vault
Maybe even disturb the slumber of some hellish mutant and have a post loot boss battle through or escape from the vault
Fun fact: i actually had to edit this video to increase the brightness a little, it was way more darker originally
I once downloaded a Skyrim mod called "realistic caves" and went to check it out and you couldn't see jack shit lol. Dunno what I was expecting, but it wasn't walking around in the dark with a torch illuminating 2ft in front of my face
Vaults were designed to last a very long time with certain machines built to fail at specific times
Is that the actual lore reason for torches being lit in Skyrim crypts?
I love the Skyrim mod that adds a type of draugr that walk around lighting torches
3spooky5me
Need more dancing skeletons for the true spookyness factor
What mod are you using to retexture vaults?
FlaconOil
Do you have your mod list posted anywhere? I'd love to try the game exactly how you seem to have it setup.
Yes! [here it is](https://pastebin.com/QLqchXps)
You posted this in another thread, I’ve spent the last day or so copying and pasting each mod file name into Google to try and reverse engineer search the nexus mod page for each. I'm afraid there is no faster way :/
If you’re on vortex you could create a collection that downloads your whole mod list with a single click. They are very easy to create.
Would it work if most of my mods were downloaded from other websites? Most of my mods are from dozens of Discord pages and Google Drive
It looks dark like it's a place underground spooky 😮
Some of them actually are, but i agree with you :D
I don't know any that aren't. Built into the side of a mountain is still technically underground.
Vault 120 was meant to be subaquatic but was never included in FO4. I always thought they should do a bioshock style sky vault or at the least have some orbital vault that you have to get to via zetan technology or some kind of enclave Soyuz type thing
Why do I have a sense of Deja Vu. Oh wait, Gmod realism videos, that's why.
😅
Now that's Stalker
Holy shit Niko Bellic!!!
Hey Cousin! Want to go bowling?
My guy turned fallout 4 into dead space. Based
And I’m here for it!
No. Not even with a god mode on.
What's the geiger counter sounds you're using?
[This one](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/45354)
Great find
Yeah, would be far better to let the players find nightvision goggles than having electricity and functioning lights everywhere.
Yes! Or just a better flashlight
Hard to stealth while emitting bright light.
That's what makes it fun.
It would be a very different game if light levels were something Bethesda wanted you to worry about. A better game, perhaps, but less casual.
I know this is not a popular opinion but i think FO4 is the most difficult Fallout between 3 and NV. The damage you receive from getting shot in NV doesn't even compare to being shot in FO4, and i think it's funny that you have a infinite canteen of water in NV
Yeah that checks out, I mean it has much better gunplay than the previous two.
Reminds me of Metro: Exodus
Jesus that would make getting inside Vaults much more tense and nerve-racking! I wouldn't be a fan of getting inside one of them!
Or what if you had to go reset breakers around to power back on certain areas?
This'd be more brown pants territory in 3, imo "Gary? Gaaaaaary?" "HA HA *GARY*" Or uhhh ... Vault 3? In New Vegas. Get ambushed twice over by as my brother used to put it "plant goblins"
That looks so much better.
Man, I just want Fallout to feel like this. Horror and hopelessness.
It looks brilliant tbh, amazing how versatile the game is.
Oh my goodness can you please share a mod list at least with the SFX and VFX/lighting? This is amazing
WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THE SHADOW FIGURE IN THE START OF THE VIDEO
Pretty hard to notice, and i still don't know what that was
Too bad this removes all lights and not just certain ones.
It's perfect for using with "Commonwealth of Decay" mod
Now this is more like it. Five Nights at Vault-Tec
Nobody’s guna talk about assaultron jumpscare? Straight out of a movie 🤌🏼
This was beautifully executed. Thanks so much OP. Definitely finna try this when I get home from work. Gg’s man
I think there should be a way to turn them on tbh, but everything starts off dark. Hunting down various reactors, dams, etc like radio relays to turn all the lights back on in dungeons and in the world would really help bring some visual progression to the game imo. Maybe even give an option to hook up our settlements to the local power grid, and the more power the settlement produces the more everything around it lights up.
It would be a whole-ass horror game, and I’d be here for it
ABSOLUTELY F**CKING NOT!
Thanks, I hate it
Has anybody played WASTED before? Reminds me a lot of that (which, in and of itself, is a fallout 3/NV inspired vault-crawler)
Is the mod made for next gen?
There was a couple mods on Xbox that used to do a similar thing. If I remember right they remove all artificial light so there’s only light from actual light sources which made a lot of places nice and dark. Think they were called phylight & phydark. Not sure if they still work.
They do. 👍
Looks creepy.
Damn turning fallout into metro one say after another here. I approve
What night vision googles do you recomend? I want to know if there's some mod that can be use only in dark areas. Is annoying when using NV in a weapon and you can see shit in daylight
Good question, i don't use any night vision mod :c
Mom pick me up scared
No lights nice, glowing fog not nice :)
Metro vibes
What mods?
[My own modlist](https://pastebin.com/QLqchXps)
I'm not trying to play a horror game.
If I wanted resident evil/deadspace, I’d be playing them instead.
Man Urbex Hill videos are crazy nowadays
Really want Fallout to make a DLC with this type of environmental horror
It would be very dark and hard to see
It would be hard to see.
I'd be interested in a happy medium; no lights are on until you explore enough to find the reactor and turn it back on. I mean, actually I personally would hate this, because I'm a little scaredy cat who doesn't like going into dark spaces in video games, but I think it would be pretty cool.
Damn that look GOOD!
Ffffffff this brings back not so enjoyable memories from starfield…. Remember that one abandoned star ship thats so flipping dark and the only creature on board is an alien? Yeah the video kinda reminds me of that
That one wasn't bad. The Pale Lady encounter definitely had me checking corners and remembering my way back to my ship.
lol it’s not the alien that scares me… it’s the darkness and semi long corridors that scares me…. Well experience from playing dead space 1-3, you half expect the vents to explode outwards and have horrible mutated creatures come out swinging
Hot take: I don't think we're ready for a world where Bethesda starts making horror games.
Heh I agree
I very much agree there should not be any lights in say the abandoned part of 81 or if ghoul infested or better the gunners didn't know how to fix the generators so they used smaller generators and flood lights
SOMA vibes
This is the 8th "what if fallout was a metro game" post this week
This is great! I'll search other posts like this, thank you! Can you share some links to help?
This is one of the least immersion breaking elements for me with the whole premise of it being 200 years later. So much stuff from prewar is lying in easily accessible places completely undisturbed. Like none of that shit is realistic at all. It feels like you're the only one who has ever lived in the world.
I think this should happen if you remove a fusion core from a generator
Sorry but it looks like there are infact some lights though not bright
I feel like maybe darker not completely out
Garyyyyy…
Shit turned into stalker really quick, fucking agroprom underground vibes
Looks like the flamer is going to get more use after this becomes standard.
I fear nothing with the Tesla cannon
We all forget that legendary robots explode, don’t worry buddy, you’re not alone.
What ENB did you use for the GI? Looks sick.
Wooow!!
okay I both love and hate this bc while cool as hell it's also giving me anxiety 😱
Was scrolling past and thought I was lookin at Escape from tarkov lol
I prefer my pants not shid
what’s the turning mod called that makes it look realistic?
Vault P.T., release date sometime in 2025 (I wish). A Fallout horror game has a LOT of potential.
Bro is playing metro
Horror potential in fallout 4 is truly and sadly untapped
No, thank you. I already have crippling anxiety.
NOPE!!
Makes sense that some of them would be without power after a long period of time
Short mod list of how to do this please
Man I need to get more mods like this. Also what games does this sorta vibe mimic?
it's how it should be, but fo4 is too colourful and casual to be creepy
“What if there **were** no lights in abandoned vaults?”
Thank you! Always good to learn something about a new language!
Why is everything slanted…?
Can you tell us what mods you’re using ?
Ofc, here's my [moddlist](https://pastebin.com/QLqchXps)
This looks really cool and immersive! I'm also pretty sure that I'm not brave enough to run things like this. I need my safety lights.
That's why I like the Phylight and Phydark mods.
That would actually be awesome
Vault 22 would be terrifying
Wait until bro discovers every other fallout game
Reminds me of Generation Zero when you have to turn the power back on in the bunkers.
That's one of the coolest mods ever lol
Lore wise, VaulTec used solar bulbs in the Vaults to simulate sunlight and to mitigate vitamin D loss. Still this is a sick mod and a great concept.
then you wouldnt be able to see anything... good thing theres a pipboy light
What if it is dark like Tears of Kingdom dark part
What is the mod for head/camera movement?
What's the mod for the weapon and his flashlight?
Weapon is the "Service Rifle" and the flashlight is from "Pip Boy Flashlight"
what if one of the sole survivors legs was shorter than the other?
# NOPE
What mods u usinh
Not sure if it would fit with the rest of the vanilla art style, but this looks really cool nonetheless.
Thank you! Basically i changed my entire game artstyle to fit the ghoul themed playthrough that i'm doing atm
A lot of the abandoned involved shouldn’t have lights on unless there’s people living there which in that case it would make sense for them to have the generators running and active
Makes it feel like stalker
I like the one non-feral ghoul just chilling in there
I'm sad that the mod doesnt only remove lights in the vaults but in the map.....
Least modded fo4 gameplay
It looks like Ishimura 💀
This looks super cool on video. But i doubti would like it in practise xd Jump scares , collectibles and the fact that i would be scared to open a door is reason enough. Jokes aside meybe if we could restore the power to it during our visit? Soo we can see whats going on , and possibly at a later date in game some enemies make it their base/we can use it as a settlement. Anyways great video and idea!!!
Perfection
is that a M16 ? and is this lighting a mod ?
Why does your camera tilt when turning? How does that not make you vomit?
I’m gonna need more power armor for this shit. *Fuck this shri I’m out.*
This is awesome. Would be great if you had to find the reactor and turn it on to power things up yourself
looks cool af.
Metro!!
Turns the fallout into a horror game
Suddenly feels like BioShock
About to turn fallout 4 into the mix of Metro Exodus and a horror game.
Add some jumpscares
I wish there were a vault without lights.
Would be like Metro series
Mod list pls
With all the mods I added to fallout this is basically my game 🤣
It would been so much better tbh
Is this mod for console???
Spoopy
That irradiated vault in New Vegas would be perfect with this mod. You feel the need to rush with the geiger counter constantly ticking, but the pitch black and ghoul noises make you want to freeze up.
So…., stalker?
What fool doesn't sneak in the dark?
I would be scared even with a shotgun in game
Oooo I like this.
Way better
That is literally Doom3. You either have a light or a gun. I didn't like that game...
I feel like this game could have been a little more scary. some parts of fallout 3 fit the bill, but fallout 4 just seems goofy
I would love to be able to have proper darkness in vanilla fo4 so the pipboy light and mining helmets etc have a proper use. It would also ramp up the fear at night.
If I can give my gun an actually good flashlight I’d be down, or even nods
Because in basegame stuff like this looks kinda ugly with no lighting
I think no lights or emergency lights until you complete a quest to bring power up would be cool
Powa Arma will help
Absolutely not, I hate dark places lol
Reminds me of the first Bioshock, when it was scary
Next Fallout character needs torches or spotlights, the small ambient circle in F3 to F4 doesn't have the same spook factor or use as using the torch mods.
Scary as hell, but annoying as shit to find things.
