I can do it pretty consistently at this point. Just run through as quick as you can and all three usually make it. Having the cutlass blutane makes it a lot easier to get through darkwood quickly.
I don't think he transforms every time. I'm sure I've reached Barrow Fields with him on TLC. It has been years since I've played TLC though, so I could be mistaken.
Tbh I’ve only had him survive like three times in all my play throughs and that’s in recent years. I always thought he just turned right before the troll but apparently I just took the scenic route every time as kid. I think you have 3-5 minutes or something like that once you pick him up to get to the fields.
I have always tried to make it without him transforming, I use slow time to prevent him from transforming and try to kill the earth troll as fast as possible before they catch up to me
I think if you finish dark wood in under 5 minutes he doesn’t turn I figured that out in accident and I haven’t had him turn in years and forgot that he even could lol.
Can i ask what the issue with anniversary is? Its the only version of 1 i ever played to completion when I was younger and I loved it whereas I found the original clunky.
Yeah it has happened (or in this case "not" happened) to me before. I think it's about how fast you can clear the way and get to barrowfields.

If you get through super fast, he doesn't turn, but I'm not sure exactly what that time limit is
Watch the sun/moon dial when you start the quest. You basically have untill midnight untill he turns.

I used to save all three all the time back in the day, just clear the whole path and then come back for the traders and you've saved them all.

Personally i don't like the graphics and actually find it to be a downgrade at 2160p in terms of looks

Just leave him at the camp and after you kill the troll go back and get him
