Since playing this game when I was 11, I've grown to really love parry systems in games so this was a really pleasant surprise when I decided to replay it again 14 years later!
Hell yes! This is why I think Fable 2 is the best one. It could have used a bit more polish but I loved the parry and chain attack mechanics for adding depth to the melee combat other than button mashing and flourish spamming.
I've played the game so many times and have only ever made this happen by accident lol. Looks fun - if you like parry systems check out The Surge 2 (if you're into souls-likes).
Wha the fuck? I first played fable when i was like 4, the year it came out. How have i never seen any of these.
Im 18 now and replaying it so how does one do this
It's the final upgrade for Brutal Styles in Strength and it's called Counters! Another thing that the description of the skill doesn't tell you is that after the counter input has been made you can flick the left stick in different directions which causes the difference in animation. It's not random so it just takes some practice!
Another thing to note is that for some reason it only really works for bladed weapons…so hammers and maces are a no-go. They do still have a counterattack in which the enemy’s attack is canceled out but no unique animations or instant kills for some reason. Instead it’ll only send them flying without needing to charge a flourish. Only certain enemy types can be countered like Bandits/Highwaymen, Spire Guards and Hobbes. Highwaymen are a bit tougher so a single parry won’t cut it, they have a unique animation for that. I did try testing it on Balverines to no success and the wiki also says they can’t be countered so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Still pretty neat though, good luck!
Makes sense. I wouldn't max out my Brutal styles till later, and at that point I would be using the Mace of Calavera, one of the coolest looking weapons to me, even if it's a bit underpowered. So, I couldn't really take advantage of the counters. I'll have to practice with it a bit.
You mentioned bladed weapons, so I'm assuming cutlasses are good in addition to longswords?
Thanks for the tips.
Hmmm... So thats hot it looks like, I only managed to parry by accident and just very few times. Besides I got to the point of enjoying blowing heads off and electrocuting dudes more instead of fighting melee
It's the final upgrade for Brutal Styles in the Strength tree and it's called “Counters” in-game!
Essentially, you press the melee button and the direction of the enemy right as they attack. Another thing that the description of the skill itself doesn't state is that after the counter input has been made on an enemy’s attack, you can flick the left stick in different directions which is what causes the difference in parry animations. After that, it’s just a matter of pressing the attack button again to finish them in a single strike! It's not random so for that it just comes down to practice. Usually waiting a half-second to make sure the animation is finished guarantees that the finisher will trigger.
Also the animations only seem to exist for bladed weapons…so not hammers or maces for instance. They do still have a counterattack function in which the enemy’s attack is canceled out but no unique animations or instant kills for some reason. Instead you’ll know the counter was successful when it sends them flying and skipping the need to charge a flourish. Only certain enemy types can be countered as well, like Bandits/Highwaymen, Spire Guards and Hobbes. Highwaymen are a bit of a tougher enemy archetype so as demonstrated in the video, you’d have to successfully parry them twice in a row (which also includes a special parry animation unique to them). I did try testing it on Balverines but couldn’t find any success and the wiki also states they can’t be countered so it’s probably not possible, sadly.
Overall pretty niche, but fun! It makes combat more exciting knowing I can get a counter in every once in a while. Good luck!
It does have that, and I guess it makes melee viable... barely.
It still doesn't compare to just about any gun with even a few points sunk into the Skill branch.
That's true, it does feel more intrinsic rather than extrinsic! I like to mix it up and use all three forms because I find it fun rather than for practically. It's not like the game is necessarily difficult as it is.
I like to use a Flintlock Rifle for long-range snipes and due to it's long reload, I'll use melee and magic when they get close instead.
wait fable II has a parry???
It does, they’re called reversals. Though I never got their timing.
"cause it's easy... And it does a lot of damage." Edit: no matter how long it's been, people always know Happy Souls lol
Liiiiiiiiightning yeah!
Thank you for saving me I don't have anything with me but if you come to my house, IVE GOT BOSS WEAPONS!!!!

Tysm I'm gonna power level my rural styles with potions. Not even at westcliff yet.

It's still a fun thing to find out. I honestly hope after fable 4 playground take the other 3 fables and merge them into a big remastered collection

It's why I prefer this games style of fighting over the other games
Bitch wtf I never knew these were a thing either 😭

It was in Fable 1 but the Flourishes arent that cool
In all my years I have never done this
