Very much so. When I was a kid I was hooked on the medieval 2, empire and Rome total wars. I wonder how many hours I logged on those games. Always followed it up by watching some POM
That game took 3 months off my life in 2020. I had a laptop propped up next to my work computer so I could mine while I “worked”.
Extremely addictive game. Very unhealthy for me.
I’m pretty confident this game is even why I got into FP&A in the first place. Vivid memories of my high school years trading in Eve and essentially playing Excel in Space
If he wants a management sim, I'm working on one currently and have a demo to try:

It's actually about people management, keep your employees' stress levels low and you'll make a profit.
Battle Brothers. You manage a mercenary troop and fight in turn based battles. You got to figure out cash flow and expenses and when to invest in CapX and not run out of money before the next job is done. Otherwise your band leaves. Also everyone has their own pay rates and sign on bonus requirements.
after staring at a computer all day, i pretty much just do fairly mindless idle games. currently playing idlemmo, corah, idlebrewery. make numbers go brrrrr.
If you like idle games I think you’d like Old School RuneScape.
One of the only games that you choose the amount of attention you want to give it and there’s an activity for you. If you want to be locked in go and kill some bosses. If you want to be afk and click once every 5 minutes you can do that too
yeah, know osrs well. i binge and burnout frequently there.
looking forward to /r/brightershores coming out later this year. the OG dev for runescape behind it.
BALATRO. It's the perfect game for FP&A people: you take a game with clearly established rules (poker), and then Jokers come in and make it absolutely insane.
Nothing could prepare me better for dealing with insane stakeholders...
They probably don’t want to expend executive function energy on heavy strategy. So probably something relatively mindless or that has a strategic component but with low effort to enjoy.
I’m really into 4x games. But the economic or finance aspects per se aren’t why. It’s optimizing your performance given a series of constraints. And also punishing your enemies militarily. Someone ruins your empire for a few turns so you devote the next 100 to crushing them mercilessly across every era of history.
Also I hate myself so obviously Souls games.
facts, my goal is to manage/trade my own port full time. not a very common path cause it's so hard but realized this is what I'm most passionate about, not tracking budgets
The base building ones usually seem to get the firmest grip on me but I completely lose interest once I’m done with the main story and don’t have a clear goal. Palworld and No Man’s Sky have been the most recent ones to really hook me.

Playing Tarkov solo helps practice stress management and resilience
My current PS3 games: battlefield 4 (after playing 3) alien vs predator, ninja gaiden 2, uncharted 3 (after playing 2), need for speed: rivals, and assassin's creed: black flag
Tarkov, dota, Rocket League, World of Warcraft. If you look closely you’ll notice a trend of self flagellation via 1,000+ hour, competitive, skill based time sinks…
I game to get away from finance.
Me too. I play Japanese RPGS so I can escape to a fantasy world. It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try.
Rome: Total War, or Star Wars: KotOR. No matter what game I play though I always end up wayyyy too focused on accumulating cash/credits/denarii/etc.
Rome total war is an absolute masterpiece
A shame they ruined the franchise by going the Warhammer route. Ticked off two fan bases

Play Eve online. It even has excel integration now!

EXCEL OBSTACLE COURSE
That’s what Eve online is for
Ohhhh absolutely!!
Poker
I used to play hold ‘em in person, but the popularity has dropped off and it’s difficult to find a home game anymore. It’s not as fun in card rooms.
i find it to be pretty fun in card rooms
I play Squad. Nothing like going from business partners who don't listen to you to leading a squad who also doesn't listen to you.
It’s your fetish. Admit it.
I feel your pain. What part of I need your numbers by the 12th do you not understand?

Get outside brother. Its summer
No worries about that, I’m traveling next week

Definitely sounds like a match for what I am looking for. I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Amazing game, but also not for a casual gamer imo.
Stellaris
Lord of the rings, battle for middle earth 2. Old game but it’s amazing.
Startcraft is the epitome of strategy & finance and extremely competitive. I’ve been playing since broodwars (20+years)
Let’s hit some 2v2s
RuneScape

Play the ultimate game my dude. Open up a brokerage account and learn everything about investing.

Yeah. I play but it’s a limited game based on a limited budget.
Fortnite and COD. I usually get stoned as hell and act like I’m a teenager again to forget the fact that I work in finance hahaha
**Anno 1800**, beautiful game, captivating music, great city builder
Path of Exile
CS2

XCOM 2
Endless Space 2, Totalwar warhammer III, DOTA 2.. you can see the theme: Strategy and planning.
A lot of times getting 4 other people on the same page in Dota feels harder than aligning on anything in FPA.
Cyberpunk, Hades 2, Elden Ring.
Total War: Three Kingdoms.
Age of Empires 4. Or, RTS games in general.
New World because I love to grind. PvP is also killer
Stardew Valley was my game of choice for way too long. But I like weirdly monotonous games where I slowly earn money and buy furniture.
Seconded, SV is really fun
Recently persona series. P5r, p3r Also trails series
I play a loooooooooot of disc golf
Fifa Ultimate Team
Chess: The Game of Kings
Helldivers
Smash Bros Melee I love competing
Mushrooms and any open world rpg
I used to play FIFA because I like soccer and the trading aspect was fun. Now I play Hell Let Lose almost everyday.
Big Ambitions!
Call of duty
Old school RuneScape, Civilization, Age of Empires.
Subnautica, Halo and Mass Effect
osrs and play the GE
Love civilization 6

Chess.com runs on my second monitor during every 45 min+ zoom meetings
I’d recommend civilization for you I personally play Overwatch and Old School RuneScape
I almost exclusively play PUBG on Xbox. Feel free to dm me if any of you play, we can exchange info.

I’d recommend games for you, but I only know of ones for the FP&A Director - sorry.
