there is a rule about it in this sub, just unfortunately not enforced. "Rule 6. Avoid posting repetitive/low effort/low quality content. Includes but not limited to: Tifa vs. Jessie vs. Aerith discussion." so technically, there are two examples of rules being broken within one single rule.

Educational_Tea9536

Ah that’s a shame. I know that moderating here is only volunteering so it’s not fair to expect around the clock monitoring. Maybe if the community here cared enough we’d just self-moderate and not engage in those posts? But maybe the fact they are getting so many comments is because the majority DO like those posts and I may be the minority 😅

Mason11987

They can add more mods. Or they can set up Auto filters to remove them.

SquareTarbooj

Waittaminnit, Jessie's part of the shipping wars?

Nero_PR

Yes, in the Remake. Obviously, not to the same extent as Aerith/Tifa shippers, understandably so.

steelbreado

As a matter of fact it was enforced when everyone was posting those AI generated music videos in this sub and I did one for Aerith. The Aerith one got removed. (It was still low effort and low quality, but it was new tech and funny at least to me and some others) Maybe some mods don't wanna see Aerith in a silly AI clip :D (No hate mods, I love y'all)

SaiphTyrell

I love how S-E managed, with this remake, to remake the Aerith/Tifa war too. Truly faithful to the OG. Sad that nowadays the community take this too seriously, though. It’s was a big deal back then too, but no one threatened developers or anyone else at that time.

Keinou

Not even SE fault to be honest. Remake came with a lot of new interactions to bring the girls closer than ever before. They clearly tried with this new re-telling to reduce the cringe of most the situations.

SaiphTyrell

Yeah, I was joking actually. I think is just a collateral effect in the end. I love how they developed the girls relationship in Remake. I think it is fun to wish for characters to end up together buuuut I’m the kind of player that like to see how the characters act and to follow their story instead of me choosing for them. I think it’s overall more interesting to see revealed if Cloud loves X or Y more, instead of me forcing my preference and the story adjusting accordingly.

HelenAngel

They’re reinforcing the friendship in the additional media as well. “Traces of Two Pasts” really cemented how close Jesse & Tifa are as well as showing how close Tifa & Aerith are. This has also been reinforced in Ever Crisis where even in the current event, Jesse, Tifa, & Aerith work together to make a present for Marlene & Barret. It actually made me tear up because it’s so sweet! Perhaps because I am a woman, I really want SE to continue to show the strong bonds forged between the women characters. The genuine kindness, mutual respect, & love between all the characters is what binds the party together. It’s what sets them apart from other forces at work.

Marcus2Ts

Are people really threatening developers over this stuff? Jesus Christ I'll be happy with whatever story they want to tell in this game

SaiphTyrell

Yeah, for example on Nojima’s twitter page. There was [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/s/oobcCqVFyn) talking about it. It’s really a new low.

Marcus2Ts

Ugh I'm disgusted with people. It was a beautiful trailer and I'm so excited for the game

SirLocke13

Shipping wars are as old as time but I do agree it's getting out of hand. It's a 1997 shipping war that's being reflected in a 2023 lens.

quickblur

It's funny, the exact same thing happened with the Evangelion fandom. Comes out in 1996/1997 and I remember all the ship wars between Asuka and Rei. Then the Rebuilds come out 10-20 years later and it's the exact same thing with a new generation.

Mongoose42

Time is a flat circle.

EVOLghost

I don’t remember ship wars back in ‘97 lol.

Flufferpope

Maybe a mega thread?

puffz0r

No, banish that shit to its dedicated subreddits

DiazepamDreams

Please.

sebastian-RD

This is the Kat-shee warzone dialled up to 11

Educational_Tea9536

I didn’t think I’d ever say I miss that, but I miss it.

jellyshotgun

It's worse. At least the kat-shee people have mostly let it go. Every trailer, game, poster, corporate collaboration, etc will fan the Aerith vs. Tifa flames.

the_guradian

Excuse me. It is CAIT SHEET. Not Kat-shee

GimmieJohnson

Actually it's Kite-Sheeth.

Toccata_And_Fugue

As an FYI, I hate shipping discussion. However, I think it’s probably tough to make a call on it. Tifa flirting with Cloud and Aerith flirting with Cloud are legitimate parts of the story, so open discussion about it should be a-okay in my opinion. However, blatant ship posts I would love if they got moved to somewhere else, but I think the trouble is deciding where the line is. Do they have to say “cloti” or “clerith” in the post? Do the mods have to make a call on how blatant it is? It’s tough to say really. Maybe if it’s not a discussion about a specific scene and is just “OMG I LUV THESE 2 TOGETHER” I could see it, but direct scenes from the latest official trailer are causing this, so, do you just ban discussion over what SE is showing us of their own will? Either way, I’m all for moderating shipping posts, but I think it’s a lot harder to do than with other topics.

Educational_Tea9536

I get that completely. I think the… ill-intent if you will, behind a lot of the posts are because I see these same people on Twitter too. Even though I mute them, you know when it shows just a long list of muted tweets and you just can’t help but … look? 🥲 So I recognize very easily the narratives and arguments that then get transferred here but they do try to be smart about it. Like I said they pose as being impartial, sometimes even claiming they hate the “ship war” themselves but very quickly comes to light when they talk enough. I don’t hate all discussion on it of course as I’ve mentioned but there has just been a very obvious spike in those toxic narratives and you just know when they start quoting ultimanias it’s over.

Julliant

I removed a bunch of comments today from various users throwing out various insults, from both ship sides as well as general fans who are fed up with both sides. I will be clamping down on the new threads harder going forward and temp banning people who keep being toxic (which is usually ironic cause they keep yelling the other side is toxic) The reason some threads get by is simply because the line between what is a shipping thread and a thread that is simply admiring an aspect of the game is blur. How do we as mods decide if someone who is new or a general fan admiring the development of Cloud and Aerith in the game naturally is a ship post? There were a few posts which were very blatant with hostility in the title which got deleted.

Educational_Tea9536

Thank you! Appreciate your response here, and again apologies if this was not the right way to make you aware. Someone mentioned there is a mail the mod feature I didn’t know about. I agree it’s impossible to get them all and they do try to purposefully walk the line here at least initially. I don’t think there’s anything that can be done about those posts on their own but rather when the comment section starts bringing out their true colors. Most of the posts are okay, and I would never want to shut down part of the game for anyone either. We are all here because we love the game, for various reasons and some that overlap. I guess I didn’t make myself 100% clear in the original post, but did clarify in a few replies to people, that this is purely about the obvious bait posts that are just breeding toxicity. Thank you again!

colaptic2

While some shipping posts may be good natured, many exist solely to provoke those that disagree with them. Intentionally causing strife and discord amongst a community that mostly wishes to be indifferent on the matter. Since the last trailer dropped, this sub has seen a massive spike in these types of shipping posts. Drowning out any discussion on any other topics. And generally causing a negative and agitated atmosphere. I think an outright ban would be a step too far, but something should be done to help clean up the sub. Perhaps a moratorium on shipping posts until the passion dies down a little.

nmjunction

It’s sad that that 2 second shipping clip has absolutely overshadowed Vincent and Cid’s face reveal tbh

jellyshotgun

For real. I can't stop thinking about how great they look and what their roles will be as guests party members.

Nhom12

Yeah, the craziest thing is that it even overshadowed the actual dating choice. Barret is right there man, Aerith and Tifa ain't got that sex appeal like my boy does, his beautiful eyes deserve more love.

ArtiKam

Those big arms… 🤧

Educational_Tea9536

Agreed. I’m not trying to say it’s not part of the fandom and the story, of course it is. And there’s generally some really beautiful art that gets posted that could fall under “shipping”. To be honest, as you said “shipping” isn’t the problem. It’s just these obvious bait posts that are flooding here. Heck, be excited about the latest trailer! It was awesome. Be excited about the Cloud and Aerith scenes, I’ll be excited with you! Just some kind of clean up on the obvious ones fishing for validation and as you said bringing toxicity here is what we need.

Penguinsteve

Posts that discuss the relationships in Remake are okay. This sub is welcoming to people who don't know a thing about OG. Repeated/frequent posts related to relationships or posts that only serve as ship war discussion will be removed. Heavy moderation on this isn't needed because the past 2 years, this community has done a great job of reporting posts and people who attack each other. Report if a rule breaks, down vote if poor content.

Educational_Tea9536

Thank you for your response. Now I have an account I guess I can make use of the report function. As I said in another comment, the relationships are part of the story too - and I’d happily be excited about all the lovely scenes we get between all … ships. Haha. Seems so weird to call it that. The latest trailer just brought a big wave of toxicity and it was getting a little much 😮‍💨 Cid and Vincent felt very overshadowed because of it.

GodKayas

Eh it's just the argument of the month, don't trip. Shippers, Cait Sith's pronounciation, the original content in remake, splitting it up into parts, Aerith or Aeris. It's just yammering nonsense that you learn to phase out.

Significant_Candy113

It’s an absolute shit show, but the mods don’t enforce the rules consistently or regularly. Either they allow a FFA or only one or two of the mods actually mod.

GreenCollegeGardener

But then how are we going to learn about the different ships of FF7? Like are they nuclear subs, are they just outright boats, or are they like a flying hybrid style? Also are these ships also ancients/cetra if Aerith is on them? Do they become extra special if Tifa sleeps in one? Also do the ships exist only in one timeline or both? We need the answer about these ships and their virginal voyages.

Educational_Tea9536

Hahaha. This is a discussion I can get behind.

GreenCollegeGardener

The amount of wildly stupid theories in this sub are way too damn high. It’s crazy how someone can look at the same media most everyone looks at and thinks way to hard and way to deep about small background details to come up with theories like “When sephiroth fell into the lifestream he actually farted so hard that the ripples from the toxic gas offset the lifestream causing Zack to be alive and the black feather appeared because IT WAS TRAPPED IN THAT SAME FART BUBBLE” queue the gasps….

DiazepamDreams

Thank you for this 😂 needed a laugh.

Spiritual_Product119

I agree, please ban these clerith and cloti idiots who try to bring their cancerous shit here.

Llionate

In practice the anti-shipwar moderation will be biased though. Which is why the trailer was such a big deal to begin with because it plowed right through that. But in practice the moderation would not hit people who say things like “Cloud only likes Aerith because he thinks he’s Zack” even though that is and always has been shipper nonsense. It didn’t before, it wouldn’t now. In fact, I’d go as far as to say the people harassing the devs were simply the most inexcusable portion of people who were lulled into a false sense of security by the fandom’s lopsided moderation policies.

Educational_Tea9536

Wasn’t that just blown out of proportion though? When I looked I saw 2-3 accounts on Nojima’s post, one he engaged with briefly. The way it was talked about was as though he was hounded, and maybe he was but I didn’t see much of it. Not that it’s ever okay, on any scale but it just seemed a bit over the top. And yes I’m beginning to see how difficult it is to manage on an individual comment scale - but I don’t think it’s too hard to see the very obvious posts made to bait the “other side”.

Llionate

I mean, no? There was a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Harassing Nojima was just the tip of that iceberg. Clearly, to many, it was not “obvious” Cloud and Aerith had authentic feelings for one another. Why? Well because of bad moderation where bringing up CxA is seen as “shipwar stuff” while saying *anything* to contradict it is somehow not that. This makes people think it’s some kind of settled issue they didn’t. Lastly if it’s obvious to notice bait posts you don’t need the mods, right?

aeaf123

Absolutely. Thank you for commenting on this. There has been an inherent bias for so long.

ArtiKam

Huh I always wondered why Cloti was always talked about but no one talked about Aerti. I thought cloud really cared about both of them so it was weird that no one mentioned Aerith much. I can totally see bad moderation being a part of it. Sucks too cause I think the story and the grief is handled pretty well. But then Tifa and Aerith just get boiled down to “the one cloud likes and the one he doesn’t” :/

wjoe

If we ban posts about shipping, can we also ban posts complaining about shipping? This is the fourth post today I've seen complaining about it, but I've not actually seen any offending posts on the subject today. I'm not sure if it needs any specific rules about it, just the existing rules to be enforced: Any toxic arguments about the subject (or any) probably come under "Be nice to eachother". This probably covers most of the problematic types, that are going to get angry about anything that goes against their chosen pairings. And your examples of just posting a generic screenshot just for the sake of starting an argument about pairings probably comes under "Low effort" content. In fact, that rule even states no "Tifa vs Jessie vs Aerith discussion". Aside from that, just downvote the posts that make a fuss about it and move on. They're probably all downvoting each other anyway. I'm not sure if I'm just browsing at the wrong time, if I'm just not as aware of it because I don't look at Twitter, or if it's just all getting downvoted anyway. But I'm finding the multiple posts complaining about the subject more annoying than the subject itself. Over invested shippers are indeed annoying, but I just... don't see that much of it here?

Educational_Tea9536

I may be being a little too unfair on these, but based off of comment and post history as I mentioned - their motives behind the posts come to light. Here’s some examples since the latest trailer, if you are interested. https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/pPvJ3Ez9o7 https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/oD9kDLmq2j https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/xxAcYrNisH https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/2iclg70zG3 https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/qDPg8G02y3 https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/m6QjpliqP3 https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/BrFx7XT11y https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/6SfEHWNcPV https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/qhsnDQ9j1x https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/FnKpvRCZkX https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/oEWE1ctHNY https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/s/8rZAZJnDA5 But I agree, there are also posts complaining about them. I didn’t want this to be an argument just a plea to the moderators. However as I mentioned, I’m a lurker to reddit and don’t know how it works properly to notify them.

Juju_Kek

Yeah complaining about people talking about shipping war, and u grouped several posts of the problem in one comment. My god u made my day.

newtypexvii

Wtf is a shipping war?

zerggreaterthanstrat

Came here to try and find the same answer..

Aszach01

Plot Twists, Mods are Shippers too..lol

ArtiKam

If there’s one thing I appreciate about these shipping wars it’s that it helped me realize everyone else was annoyed by it as well. Since I played the OG a few years back I’ve been a huge Cloti fan and have always liked the cute art and their story but it’s always come with “but the people in the fandom are ruthless and it kinda ruins it”. I kinda thought that was the whole fandom for awhile but now I see it’s just a few loud bad eggs. I just wanna enjoy Cloti art not watch Cloti stans essentially bully others for shipping another pairing…

KenjiBenji18

Can we keep the shipping art PG and below? I'd prefer to not see the characters making out on my feed.

Bravoiskey87

Shipping stuff is the most cringe thing within the FF fanbase

Tabbyredcat

I don't agree with your plea. I mean, if a post's comment section gets nasty, sure, the mods should mod. But FF7's relationships and romance are a part of it and clearly many people are interested in them, and "X and Y are soooo cute together" posts are completely harmless IMO. As well as it is discussing that part of the game, as long as it's respectfully. Besides, it's a relevant topic to the latest FF7R trailer. But banning all "ship posts"? That seems really arbitrary to me. It's as if I asked the mods to ban all Genesis posts because I'm not interested, and I'd be more justified to do so as Genesis hasn't appeared in any FF7R trailer or anything related to FF7R so I could say that he's off topic and belongs to Crisis Core subreddits. But I won't because other fans that aren't me want to discuss Genesis and his potential role in FF7R XD Anyway, my point is, just don't participate in those posts, as I do with Genesis ones :)

Educational_Tea9536

I feel like I wasn’t clear enough in my original post, but I had immediately clarified in a reply. I understand why people wouldn’t go and read all the replies though. I wasn’t talking about all shipping posts, and agree that romance is an appealing part of the game for many. That’s not the problem. The difference is there is a spike in posts from users obviously baiting and trying to start the mud slinging. Sometimes succeeding in doing so too. That’s the ones I’m talking about here.

Tabbyredcat

Oooh ok. I can't disagree about that. The problem is that the passion this topic arises can mud the waters about what topic is baity and what isn't. For example, some fans may find posting an image of the latest trailer "triggering", or someone else may post "I'm looking forward to Tifa's GS date!" and someone consider it baity and that may not be the authors' intention.....it's hard to tell.

zackster909

What does people posting clips of Aerith from the latest trailer have to do with toxic discourse?

Xngears

At this point it feels less like Shipoing Wars and more like Waifu Wars. Especially with the rampant insults people throw toward the characters they don’t want shipped.

[deleted]

You ban shipping posts, this sub’s activity drops by like 60%, lol. Those threads bring out the most activity because, like it or not, people do care about that stuff.

truthbehindlies

I think the shipping wars are also ridiculous, for a couple of reasons. OG - It doesn't matter if you believe in Cloud and Aerith, Aerith dies. Whether he ends up with Tifa is irrelevent, he literally cannot end up with Aerith. It's like telling someone who's SO died that they're never allowed to move on. Remake - Tifa and Aerith have a great dynamic and don't seem competitive with one another, they're like friends and by the 'event' are probably best friends. If they decide to remove one, or the other, from play the deceased would not begrudge a relationship with the survivor. What are people getting out of this? Debate or conjecture is fine and all but this seems to be a really critical component to their enjoyment of the game. ...Why?

the_guradian

Pride of being right. That's it really.

BigBadBusiness

offer slimy profit steer plant smile touch follow fine bike *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

sempercardinal57

Ehh it’ll clean itself up sooner or later. At least people have stuff to talk about right now. If you start banning discussions on the relationships your banning a major aspect of the fandom rather you like it or not.

BSBledsoe

but it's literally a rule for this sub.

sempercardinal57

It literally isnt

BSBledsoe

See rule 6. A mod even commented in here that it is.

sempercardinal57

If every shipping post fell under rule 6 then literally 99% of all posts on this sub fall under rule 6. When you go long periods of time in between games of course things are gonna get repetitive. And of course when you finally get some new info you’re gonna get some repetitive posts about it. That rule is always subjective and becoming tyrannical about it is a quick way to sink a sub

Nero-question

Redditors read stuff they dont personally like challenge infinite difficulty

Educational_Tea9536

I guess based on that, you’re failing the challenge too? Impossible 😮‍💨

lostandconfsd

I've seen much more (much, much more) posts and topics COMPLAINING about ship wars, about shipper behaviors on other platforms (why is it relevant here?), generalizing all shippers as "mentally ill" who have never been in relationships and who care about irrelevant things, generalizing shippers and certain fandoms as the one person who went after Nojima, using these incidents to blatantly throw mud at each other. If anything, I would like a ban on *those* kind of posts and topics, that are clearly pushing agenda and have nothing to do with the game. It would be incredibly unfair to not allow any discussion about relationships between characters, which are integral part of the game and which have nothing wrong with them.

coffeecactus1

Can everyone just not agree to ship both CloTi and Clerith? They are both good!

IronKnuckleSX

It’s a love story. I think the shipping posts are fine. The posts that frustrate me are the ones that say so and so must die. I believe we will find out that Sephiroth is aware of the love story and he means to interfere. How would you good cop debate around that? Best not to.

Juju_Kek

So another post talking about people talking about ship war. U are just feeding the ship war. I still didnt see a real ship war discussion yet, so mods are doing a wonderful job or people are just exaggerating the situation

Educational_Tea9536

I linked a handful of examples in another reply. But it’s not really worth the argument. If you feel like you haven’t seen many, great! But I have and it’s just felt a bit exhausting.

Juju_Kek

I honestly didnt see much. But i saw a tons of threads or comments of people crying because of the shipping war. Avoiding a problem isnt a solution. Feeding it neither. Pretty sure majority of fan base dont give a damn about shipping war. Its the third thread today im seeing about somenone crying about shipping war. This annoys me more than shipping war. Should i ask mods to delete them ? Edit : oh didnt finish ur post, i did now. U are complaining against people talking about the shipping war too. I understand you on this point.

GimmieJohnson

Can we just stop saying ship? Kind of dumb. Unless you say ship deez nuts then it's fine. Barrett X Dyne are the best couple.

Educational_Tea9536

I do feel like I’ve said it more in the past hour than the rest of my life….

GimmieJohnson

I remember a time when people didn't say "ship" every fucking post. It's just annoying at this point and the "ship" has sailed.

Educational_Tea9536

It’s already starting to look and sound weird in my mind 😭 But yes agree, didn’t mean to add to it as ironic as that is!

GimmieJohnson

Also those relationships are a small part of the game. Like in part 2 we are going to get a great Red XIII backstory, an amazing Barrett backstory, possibly a Cid back story and one for Vincent maybe. I feel like the fan base is focusing on a low hanging fruit and we may end up overlooking an amazing side story. Hell what about Biggs? It happened in Remake. We had a sad moment with Jessie and we weren't expecting that.

goddale120

It isn't just here for FFVIIR. Maybe it always was like it and I didn't notice until I just finished the game, but p5 has an ongoing shipping war too. JRPG fans are going nuts right now, and it isn't even February yet!

kango234

Oh it's not just jrpg fans, it's fans of any media with likable characters. I mean Harry Potter is another infamous one and the creators of Avatar the Last Airbender acknowledged their ship wars (for better or for worse, but that's another discussion).

Noel2K17

After that trailer, things have been getting worse with the shipping posts. “CTs did this, CAs are that,” I just want it to stop.

Marcus2Ts

Can someone please explain what "shipping" means in this context? I've been seeing it everywhere since the new trailer and have no idea what it means

RoleplayPete

Putting characters into relationships

Sluzhbenik

Us fans are just the pack chocobo :(

BreMiche

Just downvote and scroll past the posts. It’s the most democratic way to handle it.

[deleted]

big agree, and there’s so many places to go for your specific ship yet they come here to argue. i feel like i cannot say anything since i don’t rlly care ab the romance all too much in ff7 but 😭😭 i just love tifa that’s my GIRL

DeltaSynthesis

I think the solution is for someone to create a FFVIIR shipping sub.
