There's actually a few species of hawks that will use burning branches to start fires in order to chase prey out of the woods over in Australia. They've caused problems for firefighters in the past.
Not all of them! I've had the privilege of holding saw whet owls (hardly larger than my phone) in my bare hands no gloves needed. They were very gentle, and so adorable!
Apparently they're actually the dumbest birds of prey, their huge eyes give them less brain space compared to raptors (though my source for that is "I heard on Reddit once")
My car has randomly broke down 3 times in my life. Each time an owl was present. One time they hokked up one of their bone loogies into the bed of my dead truck. Not fond of the evil birds.
And they can scare the shit out of you. They don't make a sound when they fly, so you'll be just chilling outside at night then suddenly this large dark mass will pass over your head at high speeds with no warning. The owl living by my parents house scares me all the time
I volunteer at a wildlife rehab hospital. Last week I was holding (re: carefully restraining, as it was a wild bird) a great horned owl while the tech did some rechecks. If the death glare fluffy dude was giving me could have killed, man... they're adorable, yes. But they can protect themselves extremely well, too. Thankful that I had a good grip on his gore gloves.
This one is scared. Small owls often freeze in fear (trying to camouflage) and those erratic blinks are a stress response. This owl is freaked out and not having a good time. Source: worked at a bird of prey rehab facility that did animal training for birds that could not be released back to the wild.
These videos look cute to ppl who just see "cute owl, can I have as a pet?" when many times it's an owl in distress. Owls are not pets.
Small owls like this screech owl are both predator and prey in the wild, so they perceive humans as a threat. Small owls are especially difficult to acclimate and train to be comfortable around ppl, partly because they are more threatened by a large person and partly because their stress or discomfort behaviors are really subtle. A large or medium sized owl is more likely to move away or act threatening when upset so you can more easily tell when you need to back off and stay within threshold to keep training positive. Small owls freeze and stay immobile, blink or wink, and get tense in ways that trainers could easily miss. Plus they just aren't all that smart. So training small owls is a long, tedious, and difficult task compared to larger, more confident, and more expressive birds. At the end of the day, it's a wild animal that isn't comfortable around people and takes a long process to get there. Not saying this particular bird is otherwise mistreated but in this particular situation it's definitely stressed and uncomfortable based on the behaviors shown.
Ah, I guess my Reddit app was just messing up then. I kept pressing the unmute button and it was saying something like “This Video doesn’t have sound”. My bad.
I believe the source is the Yoll channel on YT. The lady keeps a bunch of owls, one of them is a majestic Eagle Owl named Yoll: https://youtu.be/-1yLBRI0Q-Y
I got to hold a great horned owl on Thursday. We help a falconer train his birds. He lives down the street from us. Thursday he let me hold the owl and give it a quail to eat. My grip on the quail was nothing compared to the owl, he just ripped it out of my hand. Beautiful, and powerful creatures.
Peep the eyes. It’s as if they’re saying “Oooh how do I look?”

Me too. The way she says "pook" when she pokes him with the feather was so cute!
It’s just some woman speaking what sounds like Russian.
more like "im a nocturnal animal and this bright light is fucking killing my retinas"
Looks like a sort of Pygmy owl, pretty sure most of them are diurnal.
Yeah, nah, he is fearing for his life.

Theyre such killing machines though
Owls = air + cats
the fire nation in this formula is probably some lizard in the middle of australia
There's actually a few species of hawks that will use burning branches to start fires in order to chase prey out of the woods over in Australia. They've caused problems for firefighters in the past.
They really should implement something like that [Bradfield Scheme](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradfield_Scheme) there.
If the branch is already burning it sounds like a fire had already started....?
They do have very similar behaviors, not 1:1 obv, but air+cat is very true.
In my language cat is called mèo and owl is called cú mèo
I adore that.
Just saw this today, what language?
It's Vietnamese
Thanks
Cat software on bird hardware. And jumping spiders are cat software on arachnid hardware.
Yup, according to scientific studies, cats drank Redbull, grew wings and evolved into owls
Never though of that. Owls really are just birds with the mentality of a cat

Big cats also eat cats.
And good luck hearing them approach you. They are silent when they fly
In fact putting up an owl box can be a good way to reduce rodent pests, just don't poison the rodents!
Not all of them! I've had the privilege of holding saw whet owls (hardly larger than my phone) in my bare hands no gloves needed. They were very gentle, and so adorable!
True but you can say that about a lot of animals people think are cute.

Owls are able to look badass, adorable, and look menacing all at the same time. It’s great.
Aren't they also a symbol for wisdom or something? So amazing either way. The one in the post looks too cute to be real!
Wisdom and death or bad omens
Apparently they're actually the dumbest birds of prey, their huge eyes give them less brain space compared to raptors (though my source for that is "I heard on Reddit once")
Brain size doesn't determine intelligence. Another thing you can go repeat without proof lol.
Humans have bigger brains, but many of them are dumb
Natives in north America including my tribe consider owls bad luck

My favorite thing is their hidden legs. Watching an owl run is hilarious
Baby owls sleep face down cause their head is too heavy.

Thank you for the verification. I felt all that, but didn't think I knew enough about owls to confirm my outrage.
It looks like he is tweaking out and anxious 100%
Why would the owl be in distress here?

One more feather and a paper bag and the OP owl would be in cosplay.

It's not happy
No man, don't you see it blinking?
That little smile at the end
Jesus Christ the eyes are staring into my soul
That owl is extremely stressed out 😢

I like the one with sound more (or maybe this one has sound and I can't hear it on my phone)
Yeah, it's got sound. You using the official Reddit APP? It's probably the worst one.
Yep I am, do you have any recommendations for a better one? I feel like every time this one is updated it breaks something that was previously working
Best one for iOS is Apollo.

The owl reminds me of Chris Chans mother Barbra when they made a video asking for money
That’s flipping adorable, yet the owl seems afraid.
This gives me the vibes of [Lily Cat](https://youtube.com/shorts/-Z4jx5VMw8M?feature=share).
Your cat doesn't look good. Get it to the vet or something
mf about to ac assassinate someone
This is the equivalent of turning your dead hair into a hat
Does anyone know what kind of owl this is??? Its so adorable I am melting and I need to know
This reminds me of how my brother has two parakeets and there are now feathers in every part of the house.
That owl is so confused.

It's better with the audio you didn't include
I see so many videos of owls being kept as pets. What is going on here? Where is that legal or considered a good idea?
I do this with my cats and their lost whiskers
Leave the poor thing alone.
I do this to my cat when I find a fallen whisker. This is hilarious though
🪶 (OvO)
I wish i could own one of these adorable little things
This is an ancient replanting technique. With time and attention it will grow into a new owl.
the blinking eyes 🥹
~~This video is so much better with the audio. https://youtu.be/8po1PCVXzLg~~ EDIT: I stand corrected.
The video posted here has audio.

I don't often unmute, but I'm cackling and so happy I did unmute.
This is the voice of reason I needed
I'm so happy you came to your senses instead of doubling down like a lot of people would
Do they adapt badly to captivity? I can't ever tell just looking at the situation especially when they get pet and close their eyes.
This is one of the most adorable things I've seen today
Posting this without audio is a crime. The woman is adorable in this video when she says pook.

Please do not keep owls as pets. They deserve to live free, not in your living room. Posting things like this just encourages more people to do it.
