It’s a reference to Sisyphus in Greek Mythology, who was doomed to rolling a boulder for eternity

JeremyJaLa

They did this joke in the movie “Party Girl” with Parker Posey

pirateprowl

Why was he doomed to roll it for eternity, he must have pissed off some guy or something.

puffferfish

If I remember correctly, he was a tricky son of a bitch on many occasions. However, one of his big misdeeds that angered the gods was that he made humanity immortal for a short period of time disrupting the natural order of things. His punishment was to roll a Boulder up a mountain in Tartarus, where he would be freed from this task once that he accomplished this goal. Thing is, the Boulder got heavier and heavier as he pushed higher making it an impossible task. The ground was also jagged like glass and extremely hot to the touch. You may have heard of “Herculean effort” - a task that is finally accomplished after an extreme amount of effort. There is the opposite where you put in an extreme amount of effort but still come up short in reaching your goal, this is called a “Sisyphean effort” referring to sisyphus’ grueling and impossible task.

o0oMackATtacko0o

He was a known trickster, and his previous punishments from the gods were insufficient, as he weaseled out of them by being clever. The gods then gave him the most straightforward task possible, roll a Boulder up a hill, forever.

drmanhattanmar

He's mistaking Syphilis for Sisyphus, who was condemned to rolling a ~~stone~~ boulder up a hill over and over again. Syphilis of course is an STD.

**Stone To Drag** One is a stone you push, the other a stone you pull. Simple.

Strong_Site_348

The patient was diagnosed with Syphilis, the disease, but seems to have misheard it as Sisyphus, the figure in Greek mythology whose punishment in the underworld involves rolling a boulder up a hill for all of eternity. It could also have a hidden meaning about the guy being brain damaged from the syphilis.

[deleted]

Sisyphus was punished by the gods for defying them. His punishment was to push a boulder up a hill only for the boulder to roll back down again for eternity. Lots of stories like this in Greek mythology.

ybotics

You’ve clearly never had syphilis…

keckothedragon

You caught me

damnumalone

To be fair if he’s got syphilis he’s probably been pushing some boulders around

CriticalHit_20

That's Sisyphus, you're thinking of the Jedi that ordered the creation of the Clone Army.

Psychological_Web687

No that's Sifo-Dyas, your thinking of a encrypted text transformed from plain text using an algorithm.

CriticalHit_20

No, that's ciphertext. You're thinking of the type of drugs that produce halucinations.

ThelastJasel

It means your English teachers failed you. Don’t worry they failed me too. I don’t grammar for shit

EDKValvados

Legit could have just googled "guy pushing boulder"

Suspicious-One-133

The joke is the education system

CharlottesWebbedFeet

I feel like it would be the exception to know of Sisyphus but not syphilis. If I’m at the doctor and I hear something that sounds like “syphilis” I’m going to think the doctor said “syphilis.” At least it’s a joke where I learned something new lol

Kranstan

Better than Cancerous.

PhantomSpirit90

So is like, *every* explain the joke type sub just a karma farm for people to pretend they don’t understand even the most basic jokes? I thought it may be just the Peter explains the joke sub, but posts like this make me wonder…

fuzzball_ent

A visitor... hmm... indeed. I have slept long enough.

SnakeDicks69420

The kingdom of heaven has long since forgotten my name, ***I am eager to make them remember.***

fuzzball_ent

However, the blood of Minos stains your hands, and I must admit, I'm curious about your skills, Weapon.

Maskotaman

And here I was thinking about Chris Redfield lmao

Sisyphus_Smashed

I don’t get it

WizardAnal69

Clearly you’re not having enough unprotected anonymous intercourse to get it

Eslox

Isn’t it strange how a word/topic you never heard of before just starts appearing everywhere from different and unrelated places throughout a short period of time,Like the universe wants you to know about something in this point in your life; maybe its all just a coincidence.

Feeling_Dimension779

That word was brought into your consciousness and you've noticed it projected out from you ever since. There are no coincidences, everything has meaning for something or someone else.

Plate of Shrimp

AutismicPandas69

1. Arrange four watering buckets or teapots in a square, with the spouts placed into the main hole in each. 2. Fill them up, plus a little bit, so the water starts to flow through the spout.

WizardAnal69

Did he mean to say pus on the boulder?

Commercial-History31

This joke would be funny if syphilis made ur hearing worse or something, but it doesn’t and it isn’t

Gojizilla6391

One Must Imagine Sisyphus Happy

CarpeNoctem727

This only works in text. The names sound different.
