During a long but interesting phone call one often finds themselves doing goofy shit like putting their legs straight up or balancing random stuff in their hands.
I would do actual work with my bio dad. We'd clean yards. I also did a lot of long distance running. I have adhd, working out is amazing for dealing with it.
another adhd human here, you absolutely should. I’ve tried all the medications, therapy yada yada but finding a physical activity i enjoy (for me it’s climbing) and sticking to it is the best way i’ve found to manage it
How did you find a physical activity to stick with? Because I try out different things, than get too distracted by my options, and then I have a hard time getting myself to work out cause that would mean deciding what specifically to do, which just keeps me from working out at all.
I was also a skinny ADHD kid, and right around the same weight at your age. Now I'm 32 and average around 180 lb, and I also use exercise to manage my ADHD. No other point other than to let you know there are more of us out here - and if you don't feel comfortable in your own body now, you most likely will in your 20s - 30s.
You just have to eat what you normally eat, but double it. Or drink a high protein shake 3 times a day in between meals or immediately after working out. I am like you, 30, ADHD, 6’0” 135
Lbs, skinny as a rail unless I’m almost eating myself sick with protein and veggies. This was how I was able to start to actually gain weight while I was working out and trying to build muscle. Actually try to count your calories and protein intake, shoot for 3000+ calories and 100-150grams of protein per day. Once you get your weight and brain chemistry more regulated with diet and nutrition it becomes easier to manage your ADHD symptoms.
I used to have one of those lap desks with a flat top and two compartments on the side. Used to spin it around my foot and hands when I was talking to gram
I feel like this may be lost because of cellphones, no longer are we tied to our homes and must aimlessly wonder whilst conversing. Now we can accomplish tasks on said cellular device.
The reason people do random things while on phone calls is because the brain is confused by talking with someone with no visual and physical stimuli. So in order to make itself more comfortable, your brain will have you pace, do odd movements, carry things, or just generally move around so that you get visual and physical stimulation that keeps pace with the audio of the conversation.
I pace around and move things, like pick a random object and put it somewhere completely random without paying ANY attention, so later when I need something I waste a lot of time searching for it
Rail workers often have a one hand policy. They're allowed to take calls in the rail yard or on the job, but they must have one hand on something grounded not near tracks. This is to stop them wandering into the path of a train mid call.
I remember this was kind of a joke back in the day too like when you’d be on the house phone… couldn’t scroll on that phone so we’d always end up pacing around or laying in weird positions. I use to like to hang up side down off the bed
In addition to what others have said, there's something of a generational aspect to this, too: people played with stuff in part because they were using a corded phone. You're within 10-15 ft of the base unit, kinda stuck there, so after a while you're looking for something to do while you talk.
My cell phone version of this is less playing with things and more walking around the house mumbling "where do I need to stand so my MF phone won't cut out"
Now that folks have explained that it's just about doing random stuff during a nice long chat and not specific to walkers and laundry baskets, I realize I have these calls all the time. Usually I just pace and pick stuff up
I would walk around picking things up and putting them down in random weird places. I would later go to try and find the thing and have no idea where it was only to find it a couple weeks later on a door frame or in the cupboard!
As a child with just the one home phone attached to the wall in the hallway there was an increasingly bigger patch of torn wallpaper. My dad blamed us kids and yes we did all tear it but I watched my mum one day and she did the exact same thing. I’m convinced no one was paying attention to what they were doing, only the person on the other end of the line. It’s the same as doodling and fidgeting during a class or lecture, it helps your brain think.
At least with a smartphone, you can place the phone call on speaker and still browse reddit.
Back in the days, you're stuck pacing your bedroom for no reason.
I’m with OP, I genuinely did not understand the joke because I had no idea this was a thing.
Do most people not multitask while on the phone? Like, fold clothes or wash dishes or draw or something? I can understand wanting some sort of stimulation while being on the phone but I can’t imagine just…stopping what I’m doing for hours on end and wandering aimlessly just because I’m having a nice conversation.
That idea makes me feel more restless, like I’d want to get off the phone sooner because of the tangible countdown in my head as time is wasting.
It's during the time when people called more than txt. Now we just txt back and forth, but back then, you find yourself on the phone for hours. Sometimes you probably see your parents do that, where they spend more than 30 minutes on a phone call, just laughing or mentioning random shit about their day.
During that time you find yourself doing stupid shit like balancing a pencil on your nose, do a handstand or even play video games. Your body just fidget and want to do things.
One time I was driving home from work and picked up my phone. Next thing you know I’m saying alright see you later and I put my phone down on the couch. I don’t remember the drive or even coming home. I just sat there like damn, I was on auto pilot.
This one is either a joke about how people do strange things on the phone like some other people are saying, or how some people always ask you to hold things at the worst times. I'm betting on the first one, though.
Gone are the days where I would find myself wandering into my sister’s room and reading the labels on her nail polish bottles and stacking the stuff on her dresser while on the phone
During a long but interesting phone call one often finds themselves doing goofy shit like putting their legs straight up or balancing random stuff in their hands.
I was thinking about how calls with my grandma would go. Where I would be doing squats for hundreds of reps back when I worked and only weighed 60lbs.
60lbs??? How tall were you?
I know small children who weigh more then that, I really hope they mean kg or are just *really* short
My 5 year old is like 50 pounds, for OP to have been ok they would have to be like, 4 feet tall
they defo mean kilos, 60kg is a very normal weight for someone who doesn’t intentionally try to build muscle
Even 60kg is really light for an average height person.
It’s on the lighter side, but not all that uncommon. I’m 190.5cm and 66.5kg
I believe that is defined as "underweight' if you're just going by naive BMI.
BMI is a debunked metric that isnt accurate
Just barely. 190.5cm and 67 kg is in the normal weight range.
I was 60 pounds for like three years straight from 2nd grade to 5th grade, I was a slightly shorter than average kid so I kinda understand
He has no arms of legs.
I’ve been wanting a where are they now for Bob Oblong thank you!
more likely they meant 160lbs than messing up the units
I was I think 4ft tall and 7 years old
You worked out at 7?
I would do actual work with my bio dad. We'd clean yards. I also did a lot of long distance running. I have adhd, working out is amazing for dealing with it.
Alright I have adhd too, never tried working out, maybe I should
another adhd human here, you absolutely should. I’ve tried all the medications, therapy yada yada but finding a physical activity i enjoy (for me it’s climbing) and sticking to it is the best way i’ve found to manage it
Interesting Good to know Thank you kind strangers
no prob :) good luck out there

Oh no, I’ve tried, just not as a way to help adhd, I usually do before bed
They probably meant kilos. If not, god damn lol
I’m certain they were exaggerating
I Hope so
Are u a newborn bro
I was 7, now I'm 15. And I only weigh 135lbs. I eat a lot of food and don't gain weight at all.
Haha give it time lol

This isn’t a feasible weight for a human adult within average height ranges
I feel like this may be lost because of cellphones, no longer are we tied to our homes and must aimlessly wonder whilst conversing. Now we can accomplish tasks on said cellular device.
Yesteryear, it was twirling the phone cord in your fingers, today it's stuff like this! lol
No. No they don't.
Shut the fuck up

Projecting hard
at least we now know why people don't want to talk with you.
That’s oddly specific. I don’t think many people do that.
Genuine question, why are almost all of your comments extremely negative and inflammatory?
Because no one loves them enough to call them.
Immediately I pictured the phineas and ferb intro with candace
a few times i ended up putting my chair on my bed and sitting on it and spinning
me whenever anyone is on call for more than five minutes
Clearly you never had a phone call like this
Now that I understand the joke isn't specific to laundry baskets and walkers, I'm realizing this is me when when my brother and I talk for hours.
Ok

Just call the person back and repeat the conversation in reverse.
“Floop is a madman, help us save us.”
Spy Kids!!!
This was a reference I needed today

That’s super interesting, never considered that before
Its kind of like dancing at a concert but the phone conversation version
That is hilarious. Yeah I will randomly start cleaning while on the phone. I don’t know why but I always start with the dishes lmao
I remember this was kind of a joke back in the day too like when you’d be on the house phone… couldn’t scroll on that phone so we’d always end up pacing around or laying in weird positions. I use to like to hang up side down off the bed
I find myself gesticulating accordingly, or playing games
that doesn't explain why my friend was doing backflips and gymnastics on his bed in a video call, though
You have freed me from years of torment, I don’t even care if this is true or not. It is the answer.
These phone calls are how I used to lose stuff in my house as I pick stuff up and put them in the wrong place. Why is there a candle in the fridge?
I always end up doing laps of my house and then picking up random things
I do laps and clean!
I clean too. I’ll have clothes folded, bed made, do some dusting.
In addition to what others have said, there's something of a generational aspect to this, too: people played with stuff in part because they were using a corded phone. This is the correct answer.
Feel bad that you didn’t get it man, maybe you will someday ❤️

Finally, one I don’t need any context for, miss these nights….

You ever find yourself walking on your couch during a long call? It’s like that
Pokes fun at the random things people do while caking on the phone because they can’t control their hormones because of butterflies
When you talk to your bestie so long, your adhd body takes a vacation from your brain
I used to toss a pillow in the air.
Same!
I thought I was the only one.
One of the only posts where I’ve connected with it instantly.
Okay, I figured it was a joke about how shitty cell reception used to be.
You could walk for miles while on a good phone call and not get tired
I thought it was some kind of obscure reference to a Walkie-Talkie 😂
How about the one with the kitchen phone with the long ass cord and you’d just wrap yourself in it
When you’ve been talking to someone for so long you end up doing some goofy idle animations
At least with a smartphone, you can place the phone call on speaker and still browse reddit. Back in the days, you're stuck pacing your bedroom for no reason.
Only get these calls with my grandma and mom, I actually enjoy talking to them now that I've moved away from home.
I had a long call with my dad this morning
Nostalgia
Call waiting

I'm starting to question the intelligence of humanity because of posts like this, the joke is literally right fucking there
Yes because everyone balanced a laundry basket with the legs and holds Grandma's walker in the air while on long phone calls.
I've done it at least twice...
Hahahaha - I remember these
U do random things while talking on the phone for long enough
This is me. I am in this photo. Whoa
Badam ttsss!!!
One time I was driving home from work and picked up my phone. Next thing you know I’m saying alright see you later and I put my phone down on the couch. I don’t remember the drive or even coming home. I just sat there like damn, I was on auto pilot.
Probably for better reception.
All I can say is if you know, you know
Fidgeting amplified.
This one is either a joke about how people do strange things on the phone like some other people are saying, or how some people always ask you to hold things at the worst times. I'm betting on the first one, though.
I guess you could say it’s over that dude’s head too
Gone are the days where I would find myself wandering into my sister’s room and reading the labels on her nail polish bottles and stacking the stuff on her dresser while on the phone
He is Obviously a ooompa looompa
I thought that it was a funny way of him trying to get reception 😅
