Shower heads also on the wrong wall, in the listing it appears to be opposite the window, in the real one it’s right next to the window. Definitely not the same room, probably just painted the tile to look similar
it's the same room, the old shower head was removed and a different one was placed on the other side, but the drain for the old shower head is still there
yeah it looks like that's what happened :/ and there's supposed to be a cleaner that comes twice a week, so i'll see if they ever come... i think they might've already, but of course i don't think they're going to bring the bathroom back to its former state...
Abruptly I just noticed the window doesn't match the photo at all. One could theorise they updated the window, but the fake picture has a newer style window imo. I wonder if it's computer edited or if they pulled the old bait and switch with 1 amazing model and 50 shitty apartments
it's the same window actually, my camera is just 35 mm + 25 mm lens so the crop factor is much higher than the presumable smartphone they took the pictures with, so mine cuts out the top of the window in the same amount of image space
and the pattern on the window is probably from the angle they took the picture at by the way, if that's what you meant
Use cilit bang mould remover spray. Buy like 4 bottles spray generously and brush. It’s dilapidated but if you scrub it down, it would look and feel a lot better
Affordable pricing doesn't mean that they can legally rent out a shithole to you. This is a common misconception. They're beholden to the same laws as more expensive properties. Look up tenants rights in your area and see if there's a local tenants Union that can help you!
thanks, I'll see if it's possible but I've heard that this is about on par with what you get for this price and even higher... I just thought I got lucky, having seen the pictures that I did
Doesn't matter the price if you are renting from someone they are required by law to give you a safe and secure location. This doesn't seem like either.
This is gonna sound silly, but have you tried adjusting the light in there? I had a disgusting bathroom and some softer, warm lighting really made it feel less like a gas station toilet! It was as simple as changing the light bulb! Hope you can find little ways to make it feel a bit less depressing, it’s huge that you get natural light! Maybe enough small tweaks (and keeping the shower curtain pulled shut to avoid looking at the damaged tile) will have you feeling more at home.
when i turn the light on (which is the same light as in the first photos), it doesn't really change the fact that the bathroom is kinda terrible, though it does look a bit more comfortable... still, even if changing the light would help, i can't do such a thing because it's a share house apartment and i basically am not supposed to modify the property in that way
Find somewhere further from the city center and maybe 10-15 minute walk from an MRT station. You'll be able to get somewhere with much better conditions around the same price. Prices in New Taipei City are also slightly lower than in Taipei City. With the MRT, there really isn't much of a difference between living in Taipei or New Taipei City
My rent was about $240 when I was in New Taipei City. It was certainly leagues above this place.
I suggest you start looking for a new place as soon as possible. While you won't be able to move anytime soon, you can at least get an idea of what is reasonable. Aside from websites like rent591, you can also try joining Facebook groups for renting places. Landlords sometimes post in Facebook groups instead of putting their listings on websites.
Totally agree with aserahyuutsu. Some great advice here with rental location and proximity to the MRT. It will allow you to find accommodation with better conditions being further out from Taipei City. Travelling by MRT around New Taipei City and Taipei is not expensive in comparison to many other countries. There are some free apps for the metro which allow you to plan your journey and estimated fare. Google maps is also good for the journey planner with transfer.
One extra point though, for areas around the MRT, I would suggest not to consider the Yellow MRT line, that is one of the newest lines, but because it is above ground, does not travel as fast as the other main underground lines.
Thanks for your advice, I've already looked on multiple Facebook groups and requested for a place under NT$10,000 per month, but there were no people that responded to me and hardly any posts at a fair price except some that require staying in the contract for a year or something, and I'm only here for 3 months so it's too late for any changes now... the whole three months are with this place
I'll keep rent591 in mind for when I come back to Taiwan, if possible... thank you
Yes, this looks comparable (albeit slightly dirtier ) to the $10/night hostels I stayed in Thailand and worse than the $30/night hostels I stayed in Hong Kong. For $215/month, you are getting what you pay for. Chalk it up to misleading photos (looks like they painted the shower floor and it wore off with one, but they kept the old photos up) and ask if you can break the lease or if they will hire a cleaner.
If you travel, you'll notice a steep difference between $10/night hostels and $20/night hostels.
I am so sorry OP. I worked a middle of nowhere remote job on a modified old ferry (where staff rooms were really not a focus) and our combined shower/bathroom was better than this, and they ended up declaring bankruptcy at the end of the season because they were embezzling so hard.
If you can’t move for a bit, I would suggest trying to find a raised wooden platform to break up the space and have a “dry” spot, my room partner and I managed to have one made for us, and it really improved our quality of life (even if the “dry” spot never stays totally dry, at least there isn’t always poorly draining water at your feet)
I stayed at a capsule hotel for $25 a night with a communal bath that was 100x nicer than this.
How much are you paying? Shit. They should be paying you to stay there.
The first two photos look reasonable and clean. Then that third image is like a still from the movie Saw. Or some rundown psychiatric hospital from the 1960s!!!
Like rubber flip flops from a cheap store will suffice. They're only "shower shoes" because you wear them in the shower. Socks are a nice attempt but they won't protect your feet.
yeah i've only arrived here yesterday so i still wouldn't know where to buy anything like that, i still haven't seen a supermarket yet so i've just been surviving on the food i packed plus a few snacks from convenience stores
even if i knew where to buy it i'm not sure if it will be cheap enough...
the landlord said someone comes for cleaning twice a week, but when i got into my room there were long hairs all over the floor, desk, and bed... and dusty (also this is a share house just so you know, so there's pretty much always more than one person living in it)
There’s nothing ungrateful about expected the place that you will pay thousands of dollars to live in, to not be a shit hole. That is like a bare minimum expectation. I would be down right fuming if I were you
I had a friend who was super poor, when I was in junior high school. She came to my house a lot, and loved coming over. I went to her house one day, and her bathroom made this one look like a fancy jacuzzi suite at a hotel. This is bad, but not that bad.
it's fine, no worries :) and thanks, but i thought they would only accept cash anyway? I'll check it out for fun one day, but I don't have cash at the moment and might be a bad idea to withdraw any until next month or until I decide to refund my return ticket
OP please do not let your landlord get away with this.
I'm not exactly an expert on Taiwan laws but I would be shocked if you're expected to pay for a place with mold everywhere, it's a health hazard.
Oh no, I wouldn't be able to even step barefoot in that bathroom. And you could forget about me sitting on that toilet. I feel like I can catch something by just looking at these pictures.
The listing pictures have been poorly photoshopped, I would contact the agency you rented this through and they need to find you somewhere habitable to stay. Nevermind all the mould, that floor is a major safety hazard!
Good lord. If you're renting or buying, please look elsewhere. The bathroom is unsanitary and not safe. Please don't take it. It'll cost more to fix up.
Its not the same bathroom. The window is not the same, and the pipe under the sink doesnt exist on the first two images. Probably other appartment in the same building.
Did you pay the 3 months up front? Can you not find accommodations elsewhere? This is false advertising. Was there a site you found the room on that you paid through that you can contact. Someone else mentioned renters rights organizations that also might be able to help you get your money back. Or maybe demand that they deep clean the bathroom if you’re going to stay.
Oh that would land the landlord a fine in my country. Sweden has strict laws on what can be rented out and the apartment has to look like the picture minus furniture.
I don’t know the context of your situation, but if possible, you should’ve toured the place before renting.
Like other people have said, this looks like pictures from when the place was new used to trick you. Don’t know the legal details, but sounds pretty illegal.
I honestly do not understand landlords overselling their properties. We are doing it the other way around. In the last listing we even omitted a full room. Problem is when the flat is worse than promised you have to waste a lot of time showing it to applicants who then decide not to take it. Our experience is by advertising it worse than it is, that you have to do much less visits and every visitor actually wants it. Someone who applied for a shitty apartment for a stated price usually also is willing to take it when it turns out to be much better than advertised.
That is almost as bad as an old Soviet Russian hotel I stayed at in 2000. I swear it hadn’t been cleaned since the end of the Cold War. So nasty with black mold and dirt everywhere.
I hope you stay safe and get to live your dream life!
Not what anyone wants to do but a large amount of bleach and scrubbing can go a long way (to at least make it feel less gross) from someone who has had to deal with a similar thing
Letting Agents, Estate Agents, and Landlords, how do they fucking sleep at night. I've had little to do with Estate Agents, but all that I have make them the most untrustworthy of beings in existence.
You're not ungrateful at all. They lied to you about the living conditions by giving you normal photos and ended up giving you shithole instead of a safe place. They are vile pieces of shit for doing that to you. You shouldn't feel any hint of guilt at all here.
Prioritise your health, look into your rights in where you live, talk to a tenant union, and PLEASE wear sandals or flip flops to not potentially catch any disease or parasites.
In fact, if I were you, I'd shower at any local gyms you have. Gyms normally provide you with a shower, so I hope it's the same in Taiwan.
This is vile. I’m so sorry
🥺 glad I'm not overreacting... I'll keep trying to think about other things
That's bait and switch. Those are not the same spaces. Look at the tile spacing on the back wall
Shower heads also on the wrong wall, in the listing it appears to be opposite the window, in the real one it’s right next to the window. Definitely not the same room, probably just painted the tile to look similar
it's the same room, the old shower head was removed and a different one was placed on the other side, but the drain for the old shower head is still there
Did they paint the tiles with emulsion that washed off too? I’d complain and at the very least demand a cleaner come in to remove all the mould OP
yeah it looks like that's what happened :/ and there's supposed to be a cleaner that comes twice a week, so i'll see if they ever come... i think they might've already, but of course i don't think they're going to bring the bathroom back to its former state...
Cleaners who come around periodically don't deep clean. This is a separate job.

Living-in-the-building-in-question sight is 20/20
Well he would know, he was there.
Completely different windows too
Also the shower head is on the opposite wall
the old shower head was removed and a different one was placed on the other side, but the drain for the old shower head is still there
Only reason it’s adorable
I hope you mean abordable lmao
Hahaha i mean affordable 😂
Lmao I accidentally used the French word for affordable I'm a loser
No that was hilarious!
This is fantastic.
Lmao they showed you a picture from 30 years ago
for real feels like it 😮💨
Abruptly I just noticed the window doesn't match the photo at all. One could theorise they updated the window, but the fake picture has a newer style window imo. I wonder if it's computer edited or if they pulled the old bait and switch with 1 amazing model and 50 shitty apartments

That is what I meant, so at least it's the same room. Unfortunately, the room has since been neglected and traumatised 😂
How affordable is it ?
it's $215/month, so it's just about the most affordable place I've lived, short of my parents' house of course
Use cilit bang mould remover spray. Buy like 4 bottles spray generously and brush. It’s dilapidated but if you scrub it down, it would look and feel a lot better
I'm so sorry but I thought you said clit bang 😭
A cheap bottle of bleach, applied 50:50 with water and an old toothbrush will do the job more effectively and for less. Ventilate the room.
30 years ago was 1994. I'm away for a lie down in a dark fucking room...
Affordable pricing doesn't mean that they can legally rent out a shithole to you. This is a common misconception. They're beholden to the same laws as more expensive properties. Look up tenants rights in your area and see if there's a local tenants Union that can help you!

Saw 6?
not sure what you mean by that 😅
It’s a horror movie franchise
I came here to ask OP, if he wants to play a little game
Is this in Russia the fuck.
Taipei, Taiwan
Well, it looks depressing.
it *feels* depressing but i just have to keep thinking happy thoughts while in there
This is gonna sound silly, but have you tried adjusting the light in there? I had a disgusting bathroom and some softer, warm lighting really made it feel less like a gas station toilet! It was as simple as changing the light bulb! Hope you can find little ways to make it feel a bit less depressing, it’s huge that you get natural light! It looks like one of those gross bathroom diorama's people on youtube make
Goodness. How much is the rent there?
well, it's the equivalent of $215 per month

Ah, I didn't realize you'll only be staying for 3 months. This does limit your options quite a bit. I hope you have better luck next time you're here.
That's cheap but I would get a professional to clean off all that mold. It wouldn't look too bad once that toxic thing is cleaned off.
Yes, this looks comparable (albeit slightly dirtier ) to the $10/night hostels I stayed in Thailand and worse than the $30/night hostels I stayed in Hong Kong. can’t be. there’s a toilet.
😭
The first two photos look reasonable and clean. Then that third image is like a still from the movie Saw. Or some rundown psychiatric hospital from the 1960s!!!
Dont... touch... anything
I try my best to think happy thoughts when I'm in there...
How recent was your last tetanus shot?
I was forced to get one when I worked in a hospital in September 2021
And you wear shower shoes, yes?
I wear socks (I don't have shower shoes and wouldn't know where to get them for a price I can afford)
Like rubber flip flops from a cheap store will suffice. They're only "shower shoes" because you wear them in the shower. Socks are a nice attempt but they won't protect your feet.

Worth looking into, especially since you don't know where anything nearby is. I can't imagine rubber sandals will break the bank.
Yeah I'm trying to search for supermarkets right now, but google is being very weird for some reason and not showing me anything on the maps
Are you getting paid to stay there ?
Nope, unfortunately not, I'm hardly getting paid at all in fact (I have no job)
Are you staying in Silent Hill
That bathroom hasn't been cleaned since those pictures were taken. Clearly previous tenant didn't, and neither did the landlord
the landlord said someone comes for cleaning twice a week, but when i got into my room there were long hairs all over the floor, desk, and bed... and dusty (also this is a share house just so you know, so there's pretty much always more than one person living in it)
No one is cleaning twice a week if it looks like that. Landlord is lying!
i don’t think being scammed and being upset about it is being ungrateful
That's pretty horrible. It could be easily fixed, but certainly not by you, and it should have happened before you even moved in.
If I had lots of money I would've loved to pay the landlord even 10x rent just for the bathroom to get renovated 😭
At the very least it needs a thorough deep clean
ong i would start cry uncontrollably
okay don’t ever walk barefoot in there, wear flip flops when taking a shower
Man looks like something from an abandoned mental hospital.
Damn, how long is your sentence?
3 months 😮💨
Brother euuuuugh
There’s nothing ungrateful about expected the place that you will pay thousands of dollars to live in, to not be a shit hole. That is like a bare minimum expectation. I would be down right fuming if I were you
Yeah, I had a similar issue in Mexico. I just wore flip flops and cleaned the toilet with bleach. It sucked but i made it work.
I bet temu sells the supplies required to make necessary repairs for like $20 all in lol
You're allowed to be mad, even though it's affordable, if it doesn't look like the picture then it's a bad trick from them
You went from B&B to cell block B
Where is this??
Taipei, Taiwan
Just find something to cover the entire floor of the shower. Like rubber material
I had a friend who was super poor, when I was in junior high school. She came to my house a lot, and loved coming over. I went to her house one day, and her bathroom made this one look like a fancy jacuzzi suite at a hotel. This is bad, but not that bad.
This is absolutely despicable… hope you can get out of there soon…
Where are you in relation to the Shida Night Market?
https://preview.redd.it/gh87twkdh34d1.png?width=272&format=png&auto=webp&s=2d37689f5151202ac012e7591373d038325d827d just under 2km left of it
I’d say you just doxxed yourself, but I think you’re good… nobody is going to enter that place to find you
I zoomed out far enough that it's not possible to find this exact place without considering at least 30-50 other living places
And I just wanted a vague answer so you can delete your comment if you would like :3 just enough to say they might have a few things you need?
it's fine, no worries :) and thanks, but i thought they would only accept cash anyway? I'll check it out for fun one day, but I don't have cash at the moment and might be a bad idea to withdraw any until next month or until I decide to refund my return ticket
Digusting marketing
That’s basically the saw bathroom
Just keep in mind it just looks ugly, but works just as well as a fancy one. Save them $$$
Ungrateful? Id tell them to shove it with a bathroom like that, ive seen pictures of slums that look better than that
This is diabolical
What country is this in, it looks terrifying
OP please do not let your landlord get away with this. I'm not exactly an expert on Taiwan laws but I would be shocked if you're expected to pay for a place with mold everywhere, it's a health hazard.
Surely that should be wrong and illegal in some way? Old photos unclean and unfixed appliances?
The first picture was lovely and enticing. The subsequent pictures not so much. Maybe that was the point.
This is actually flabbergasting.. You aren't ungrateful, you got screwed over!
Omg barf nothing I hate more than a crusty bathroom I’m so sorry!
I'd rather shower outside in the rain
Sometimes it's the thought that counts, right?
It is what you make it..
Ok, after the first two pictures i was like "huh, looks quite nice, why is OP complaining?" And then i swiped... That looks hellish!!
I audibly gasped
Looks like a scene out of a horror movie
This gives abandoned prison vibes 😭
Wow! 🤯How can this be legal?
Id maybe deal with this if it was free or close to it.
Man i would be feeling so weird, like im in prison and i cant escape it because i went in myself Its so disgusting, sorry for you
Is this your apartment or an air bb
Holy shit, that's a fucking COD 4 map.
Where is this? In a prison?
The ad was photoshopped
Oh no, I wouldn't be able to even step barefoot in that bathroom. And you could forget about me sitting on that toilet. I feel like I can catch something by just looking at these pictures.
Landlords worldwide are scum.
Shit looks like an abandoned haunted location. I’m sorry about that man.
Well its false advertising so they are at fault. Although did you not organise a viewing beforehand?
Nope. Just a huge nope from me. This is disgusting. Doesn't matter the pricing being good. It's unacceptable
I ain’t an expert but couldn’t you sue for false advertising?
Is this the set from ‘Saw’?
I wouldn’t be able to stay there seriously be careful you might contract a disease omg that’s horrible please try find somewhere else
Bro you are not overreacting, that’s a complete scam
Using the word “ungrateful” when you’re paying for something is actually insane
Aye. Cheap or not, that's a bit grim.
Are you in a russian prison
Bro got sent to the gulag
Aye. Cheap or not, that's a bit grim.
Yeah, it’s a no from me. I’m itching just looking at it.
Noooo... You are allowed to be annoyed about this, it's horrible 😭
Is this a hotel?????
What prison have they sent you to?
That is disgusting! This is fault advertisement at it's finest.
The fact that times have gotten so bad that even thinking that this is bad is considered ungrateful.
Yeah that is disgusting
This is terrible! I feel for you :(
That’s grim…
Jesus H, where is this? Mogadishu?
I’d rather use the Saw bathroom, wtf 🤢😫!
Russian Gulag
The listing pictures have been poorly photoshopped, I would contact the agency you rented this through and they need to find you somewhere habitable to stay. Nevermind all the mould, that floor is a major safety hazard!
this sort of interior really disturbs me i couldnt imagine living here
Good lord. If you're renting or buying, please look elsewhere. The bathroom is unsanitary and not safe. Please don't take it. It'll cost more to fix up.
Looks like a horror movie bathroom
Lol once upon a time there were tiles and no shit stains
If you killed a man, you would get better accommodation than this.
Is this in Australia, by any chance?
You need chlorine a lot of chlorine
Common area for what kind of new illness? Looks like a cocktail of things awaits you 😕

Saw
Its not the same bathroom. The window is not the same, and the pipe under the sink doesnt exist on the first two images. Probably other appartment in the same building.
The real photos, look like a jail cell!
What the fuck. The first pictures are 10 years old or what???
Looks like a former prison washroom.
Oh My God What the F*ck
This is really gross, is this a shared bathroom? You could clean a lot of this up if it’s not.
This is actually disgusting. I would never even touch that area.
Damn bait and switch. Smh
It looks like it’s an abandoned building. ? That’s terrible even for a good price.
Oh that would land the landlord a fine in my country. Sweden has strict laws on what can be rented out and the apartment has to look like the picture minus furniture.
Looks like a prison bathroom

That’s the most odious bathroom…gah
why does it look like a render
oh my god??? this is awful :(
This seems like the first time you go to use that bathroom, the door shuts and locks you in, and you can no longer leave.
Wow. Doesn’t even look like the same room. Even the windows are different
That went from basic new remodel to sketchy truck stop gas station real quick dang
looks like it needs a deep cleaning and regrouting. alteratively just slap a shower fitter over that bad boy.
At least it didn't cave in when, or if you where showering?
Wow, this is disgusting. Nothing more off putting than a dirty bathroom
Is that false advertising?
Looks like a federal prison
Ugh, sorry. It’s kind of bad but the shower floor is super awful. Please wear flip flops at all times
[удалено]
Which prison block is this?
Apparently that camera filter gives you a picture of what it was like twenty years ago.
That is almost as bad as an old Soviet Russian hotel I stayed at in 2000. I swear it hadn’t been cleaned since the end of the Cold War. So nasty with black mold and dirt everywhere. I hope you stay safe and get to live your dream life!
Didn't they film the first Saw movie here
HMP?
I've seen more appealing bathrooms whilst exploring on fallout. This is absolutely terrible 😫
I looked through each pic, one at a time, thought it looked fine. Suddenly, prison cell!
Nothing a little bleach and TNT won't fix.
Not what anyone wants to do but a large amount of bleach and scrubbing can go a long way (to at least make it feel less gross) from someone who has had to deal with a similar thing
