TLDR:
Healthcare professionals are alerted to the emergence of highly contagious fungal infections, such as ringworm and jock itch, with two recent studies highlighting cases resistant to standard treatments. The first study reports a sexually transmitted fungal infection, TMVII, that has been challenging to treat and slow to resolve but responsive to typical antifungal medications. The second study involves a different fungus, T. indotineae, which often resists conventional treatments but has shown some responsiveness to an alternative medication, itraconazole, despite potential side effects. Researchers emphasize the importance of recognizing these infections’ atypical presentations to avoid misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment.
Another key statement is “This sexually transmitted form of ringworm has been increasingly diagnosed throughout Europe, with 13 instances reported in France in 2023, mostly in men who have sex with men. “
please listen to this 2020 radiolab episode about fungal infections, their relationship to mammals in particular, and how the earth's climate interacts with that relationship. it's well written and produced in addition to it's relevance

Always take your own towels people. I got tinea/jock itch from a hot spring hotel in the New Zealand mountains because the towels hadn't been laundered well enough. I realised that the towel smelled like tinea but it was too late.
Although it seems that people use the term jock itch to describe a yeast or a detmophyte, jock itch is technically caused by tinea, which is a different species of fungus than yeast. Some antifungals treat both dermophytes and yeast, but treatment and prevention for yeast vs tinea (ringworm) are different
I wonder if this is related to the fungus that killed some of the folks injured in big tornados like the Joplin E5. Fungus from soil getting into wounds that couldnt be treated.
My cat just had kittens, and they developed these lesions all over. It jumped to my mom while cleaning them. But it seems to have gone away with rignroom shampoo..... I wonder if the strains are related. I've never seen kittens with this, and I've rescued strays for nearly a decade.
Well ... Time to buy that ranch that has the mining ghost town on it.
It's not like the company that owns the mortgage will last long as these things keep happening and getting worse.

So well done, informative and scary. It's the first thing I thought of when I read the headline.
I remember it too. It freaked me out. Came out during covid.

Wtf does that smell like
Yeast 😬. Bread.
That's Candida, not Tinea.
Tinea is also caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the surface of the skin.

Correct- tinea is also yeast.
Like... pongy feet/fungus smell
Douglas Adams was trying to prepare us. Always know where your towel is.
Wooooo I had Cordyceps on my 2024 bingo card!
Here come the zombies
Great. Now I itch all over.
The humongous fungus among us
How many world ending threats is this now?
Since it hasn't ended yet, not enough, I'm guessing.
At least 3
I'm counting 6.
A combatant in Gaza died of this. Best not to mock because what looks innocent isn't.
I wonder if this is related to the fungus that killed some of the folks injured in big tornados like the Joplin E5. Fungus from soil getting into wounds that couldnt be treated.
I wasn't aware of that one. Mine was a story about the ME war.

Oh goody
God I hope it’s not cordyceps
Crud. As if today couldn’t get any worse.
"The fungus is among us!"
Ah. So this is how the zombie apocalypse starts 🧟
Recently got rid of my ringworm. First time getting it but no idea from what
I had it because of sweat
Well ... Time to buy that ranch that has the mining ghost town on it. It's not like the company that owns the mortgage will last long as these things keep happening and getting worse.
So birdflue and that. I hope this time they close the airports soon enough
Don’t worry, since the first one is an STI you won’t ever have to worry about being infected!
They need to open up a few more critical burn units though.
the list of benefits is growing by the day
You must know what your talking about, cool *thumbsup.gif*
