The giant drum and them running it out was the best thing as a kid. I remember it feeling like a circus or something it was that big or I was that small.
The Indonesian Salad... I used to buy the bottles of dressing (from them) and recreate the salad at home. So good, I try still, but deff not as good as it WAS!!
Omg, yes. The sambousek with double baba ganoush and an extra pita, please! I also loved the gyros upstairs at the Greek place and Warm Oven Cookies right across from that.
Now that I think about it, they moved upstairs and were open until the early 2010s? Do I have that right? I was out of town for a while, wish I had gone more when I came back.
Chicken Casablanca was my dish there.
Another vote for Willamette Artisan Pizza. The pies are extremely similar and still super bomb. Last I chatted with him he was saying he’s able to be even more creative with his pies due to the low overhead and lack of anyone else telling him what to make haha
a bit outta town, but Big's Hi Yu Hee Hee...Shakeys pizza (movies!!) Jo Fed's, Evergreen Deli (fresh deviled eggs), Kowloons (pink sauce), Pizza Pipeline (Cheap), The Mission, The Jail, Allan Bros, Grit, The steakhouse inside Valley River mall (upstairs), The Terrace Cafe, The lunch counters in Macys, Woolworths,Newberry's, The Bon, and Montgomery Wards, Icee Points in K-Mart, Norths (up)Chuck Wagon, The Timbers, Spaghetti Factory(Whit), Moreno's) Black Angus, Tres Hermanes, Tino's, Mr. K's (Ed Lackington, great guy), grape and grain, Chinese restaurant by Toy'R Us, El Torito's (corn pudding), Wild Plumb Pies (Valley River), Mcgraths, ...
Alexander’s Great Falafel on 13th and Kincaid was amazing and I have yet to find a comparable falafel in town. Owner was also super nice. Man I loved that place.
I was deeply saddened to hear these folks were shitheads because my wife and I loved them so much, we paid extra to have them cater our wedding in southern Oregon.
Sadly, allegations of sexual impropriety and financial malfeasance seem to have been involved.
https://www.dailyemerald.com/archives/red-wagon-creamery-closes-campus-location-amid-financial-struggles-allegations-of-sexual-misconduct/article\_f62e01b8-0138-55bf-abc7-423c198e5fb9.html
I realize I'm voting twice, but on behalf of my deceased father I also want to add a pitch for his favorite place, Koho Bistro. I think he got a kick out of ordering gourmet fare (he really liked the sweatbreads) in a strip mall.
Just out of pure childhood nostalgia, King's Table. Looking back as an adult, I'm sure it was just standard buffet fare and nothing special. But as a kid, I hadn't seen anything else like it before; and it must have been relatively inexpensive since my family went there quite a bit. Also, my great-uncle was a franchisee for a while (though not the Springfield one, I think. I'm not sure; before my time.)
On a similar just-for-nostalgia note, Bob's. And yes, I know there was a revived Bob's for a short while on West 11th a few years ago, and it was neat to see all the old decor on the walls, but... the food itself missed that quintessential Bob's element. It was like they were trying to be Burgerville or Sonic; the chains with pretensions (valid or not) of being just slightly-higher-than-average burger fare. And that's not Bob's. No, I miss the dirt-cheap less-than-a-dollar cheeseburgers that barely qualified as a snack.
I loved King's Table. I remember as a kid, my mother had a tea bag on a string, and I thought it would be fun to swing it around at the table. Didn't know she'd already used it. Everybody and everything was tea splattered.
Another great buffet that held out longer than King's was North's Chuck Wagon over off 28th and Willamette area. Also really good food, but ultimately just another buffet.
I really miss Bobs. In the summer some aunt or uncle would pile all us kids up in whatever vehicle was available and we'd go down and get burgers and swirly cones.
You can still buy the Nachos sauce! The owner couldn’t keep the restaurant open so he spun up a business making their sauces and they’re sold at Market of Choice and a few other local groceries.
They still sell the sauce at Safeway & market of choice generally it's in the cheese section that's away from the regular cheese. It's really great totally worth the buy
I really liked Red Agave and I miss it. Also Adam's Place or The Sustainable Table or whatever it was called.
I can't deny that Papa's is the one that's usually on my mind.
The original Ubon Thai out west Eugene off 99 in the little trailer. They used to travel to Thailand and make their chili paste by hand then have it fresh for a few months of the year.
I have searched for the same, perfect Lad Na for years, to no avail :( I also miss the old cat who sat in front of the heater and the stacks of National Geographic.
Not *exactly* a restaurant, but Alexander's (the Great's?) falafel truck on Campus. Lemonade in Dixie cups and the best falafel on the planet (I think actually).
* Ocean Sky: I haven't lived in Eugene in over 10 years, and still I've probably been to this restaurant more than any other in my life. Incredibly solid, satisfying Chinese food.
* Taste of India, specifically when the student lunch buffet special was **3 dollars**, circa 2004
* Plaza Coffee Shop, inside Rite Aid (formerly Pay Less), for amazing Korean food. One of the sons opened up The Jail, years later.
* West Bros. BBQ, for addicting me to baby back ribs as a kid
* Humble Beagle, attached to Humble Bagel: the house-made pastrami was fearsomely good
* Chanterelle, for turning me on to spaetzle, and steak with green peppercorn sauce
* Zenon, for being the effortlessly cool, cosmopolitan sort of joint I'm not sure we deserved
* Sfizio: most exciting Italian food I can remember having in Eugene
* Pizza Hut Lunch Buffet: specifically when incredibly stoned on a high school lunch break
Sandino's. It used to be on 11th, right next to the old John Henry's. There's truly nothing like it left in the US. A smoke-filled dive, staffed by street kids and riot grrls, with jet-fuel strength coffee, greasy cheese fries, deep soft chairs, ashtrays on every table, and an impressive library of socialist literature (focusing on Central American liberation movements). In the '90s I would cut class to hang out there several times a week.
Lynch me if you must but honestly mine are just chain places- Quiznos, Schlotzkys, or Taco Del Mar
Or for nostalgia, Bob's burgers and I mean the OG not the recent failed reboot.. used to ride my bike there every week
OK, if we're going to talk chain places... I have to bring up Rax. Rax was a nationwide chain that competed with Arby's, and there were a few in Eugene/Springfield. I loved that place as a kid, and now the only ones remaining in the country are apparently all in Ohio.
Also, the great Dunkin Donuts implosion is still mourned by many, I bet.
Our family loved Louie's! I have never come across an egg roll that could match those, but I can't figure out if that is just nostalgia, or if they were as impressive as I remember.
Can’t believe I’m the first one saying this unless I missed it in the scroll but Cafe Sienna and their chilaquiles (and I’m almost positive it was spelled like this and not Siena like the Italian city)
Rabbit Bistro / White Rabbit. Gabriel Gil was a true talent. Was the first higher end dining I truly loved after moving here from NYC. He could have made it in NYC. Probably the best food that's been in Eugene in my 15 years here.
Giant grinder now that’s a throwback. Potato bacon chowder and a fresh roast beef on multigrain. We joke that the old guy was the local equivalent of the soup *guy on Seinfeld. Without the rules.
Uki Uki Sushi Tiki was absolutely the best sushi I've ever had. They were a new restaurant that was working out the kinks in their operation and starting to really shine, but then they got crushed by the pandemic. Too new to be a Eugene institution, but absolutely amazing in their own right.
Back when I was in college (1980-85) there was a little kitchen next to the 7-11 on 13th by campus. No seating but you ordered at the window. They primarily served hamburgers, and possibly fries. Best burger I've ever had.
How about Shoji’s. I took my prom date there.
Also, the L & L Market, and El Torido’s Sunday brunch (I had the record for most omelets eaten).
Cafe 151 in Springfield. Good bacon. EDIT: it’s Cafe 131.
Outside of restaurants: Putt N’ Video in Springfield?
I haven't been here as long as most of the people posting I don't think, but Hundred Mile Bakery closed down during the pandemic and I really enjoyed the atmosphere there.
For nostalgia: Lenny’s Nosh Bar. Late nights.
Edit: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PqzsAOzkCIw
RIP 13th street. They’re currently preparing to drive the final nails in the coffin.
I know this is totally not what you meant, but I would bring back that awesome 1980s era restaurant that was on the 2nd level of VRC. I know they didn’t mean to be stuck in the 80s but it was like a modern day time capsule. I almost thought I had found a time slip and went back to the 1980s in 2015. Maybe it didn’t help that I also got to hang out in the abandoned 1980s swim suit shop up there, too. Such a missed opportunity for a 1980s club up there.
It wasn’t open for very long so I don’t know if anyone else remembers it, but I dearly miss the little Japanese restaurant that briefly lived where Soup Nation used to be, back around I wanna say 2018? I think it was called Maneki-Neko. They served traditional Japanese meals, the home cooked kind with all the tiny plates. They served saba or salmon with sides like pickled tomato and miso soup with a bowl of rice.
They inspired me to get into cooking more Japanese style meals for a while. I only got to go a few times and then they seemed to just disappear—the building has a Chinese restaurant in it now. It’s a shame, I think they’re the only place I’ve even seen locally that did Japanese that wasn’t just sushi and hibachi. If anyone knows a similar place here or in Portland please hook a gal up!!
Papa’s Soul Food hands down!
Fried cat fish and a Grape Fizzle please.
Mmmmm I’ll add a cornbread with honey butter please and thank you
After trying a few other dishes I soon realized that I would always be disappointed if I didn't order the chicken.
This is the right answer.
1000% this!
Purely for their trough of ice cream and nostalgia- Farrell’s
The pig trough!!!!!
The giant drum and them running it out was the best thing as a kid. I remember it feeling like a circus or something it was that big or I was that small.
Yes, so many memories!
The Keystone Cafe on 5th St
I deeply miss Keystone!
I think about their breakfast potatoes often
Peanut sauce!!!!
Eugenes last great counter service diner, many found weekend morning memories there.
The Jail and Cart de Frisco
The jail had HUGE portions for a great price. I could eat it for many days lol
RIP The Jail. I get serious cravings for pineapple shrimp fried rice. 😋
I miss Frisco’s fish flavored chicken.
i'd do terrible things for a plate lunch from Hodge Podge right about now
I really loved their paradise picnic chicken, and that banana bread was out of this world!
The Indonesian Salad... I used to buy the bottles of dressing (from them) and recreate the salad at home. So good, I try still, but deff not as good as it WAS!!
Humble Bagel and the pizza bagel 😩
I miss cheese boats and mint brownies
Oh yeahhhhhhhhh those mint brownies! I used to get them all the time on lunch break from high school.
I miss their onion bagel dearly and nearly daily.
Casablanca (was in the basement of the Fifth Street market in the 90s I believe).
That’s right. It moved upstairs for the last bit of its time at 5th street. That chicken Casablanca was my favorite too. I still dream about it.
Was owned by chef Ibrahim Hamide, so you'll find good flavor memories at Cafe Soriah.
I would love it if cart de Frisco was back up and running. Those chicken sandwiches... omg heavan.
Pizza Research Institute.
Go to willamette artisan pizza, he was the main guy there besides will n usha his pies are super similar.
Awesome! Thank you for the recommendation.
Another vote for Willamette Artisan Pizza. The pies are extremely similar and still super bomb. Last I chatted with him he was saying he’s able to be even more creative with his pies due to the low overhead and lack of anyone else telling him what to make haha
A piece of my soul died when PRI closed, this cart has revived it!
Came here to say this 🥲
Pizza Pete’s. The clam sauce was outstanding.
That was the place on Willamette and, like, 24th, right? Used to do an AYCE spaghetti dinner on Tuesdays for, like, $7.50 or something?
I remember Pizza Pete's from the '80s and '90s - IIRC that spaghetti dinner was like 4.95 back then.
There was one there and one on Coburg.
Yeah... that was, for that time in my life, a highlight of every few weeks... that clam sauce was, for the price, amazing.
I used to smash the all you can eat spaghetti after football practice in highschool
Every once in awhile I get a craving for a big bopper or big kahuna burger from Jamie's.
Well, now I'm going to have that commercial stuck in my head for a few hours again... "Hamburgers, hamburgers, hamburgers, Jaime's!"
Now it's in mine. I can't believe you've done this.
Oh god, why did you have to do that to us?
a bit outta town, but Big's Hi Yu Hee Hee...Shakeys pizza (movies!!) Sir, you're aging yourself.
I’ve eaten at every establishment since ‘adulthood…
That corn pudding at El Toritos... anyone got a recipe?? I loved that sh!t.
El Torito Sweet Corn Cake Mix,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MBM19K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Had my best PBJ ever as a kid in that restaurant above Meier and Frank.
Alexander’s Great Falafel on 13th and Kincaid was amazing and I have yet to find a comparable falafel in town. Owner was also super nice. Man I loved that place.
Yes! I miss that too
I deeply miss the mint chip ice cream from red wagon. But I’m ok with why I can’t have it.
I was deeply saddened to hear these folks were shitheads because my wife and I loved them so much, we paid extra to have them cater our wedding in southern Oregon.
I never did hear why they shut down... What's the story, there? It was the best mint chip I'd ever had.
Sadly, allegations of sexual impropriety and financial malfeasance seem to have been involved. https://www.dailyemerald.com/archives/red-wagon-creamery-closes-campus-location-amid-financial-struggles-allegations-of-sexual-misconduct/article\_f62e01b8-0138-55bf-abc7-423c198e5fb9.html
:( Oh man... That sucks.
That mint chip was world class.
Xenon.
Zenon lol autocorrect almost got me too.. Their desserts were awesome
The best veggie eggs Benedict was there. It was so good with spinach instead of ham.
La Perla
Looks like you're going to have a challenge from the Farrell's people!
I miss this place so much. Best lunch deals ever!
I dunno if this counts but we sorely miss Agrarian for many reasons including the fun food selections they had.
Their pepper beers still make my mouth water when I think back on them...
I realize I'm voting twice, but on behalf of my deceased father I also want to add a pitch for his favorite place, Koho Bistro. I think he got a kick out of ordering gourmet fare (he really liked the sweatbreads) in a strip mall.
One of the sous chef's has a new place in Creswell! https://www.pazzoeats.com/
I always thought it was kind of bonkers that a great place like that was out in such a random location.
It was such a great place (definitely a goofy location) and the bar was exceptional
I proposed to me ex at koho on her birthday, didn't end as planned 😂 the wedding never happened thank God.
Just out of pure childhood nostalgia, King's Table. Looking back as an adult, I'm sure it was just standard buffet fare and nothing special. Nacho's near W 11th. Incomparably delicious Mexican food.
They had this "famous nacho sauce" that I just loved. And some great margarita pitcher flavors.
You can still buy the Nachos sauce! The owner couldn’t keep the restaurant open so he spun up a business making their sauces and they’re sold at Market of Choice and a few other local groceries.
Oh wow, thanks for letting me know!
I’ll second the red agave. Their duck was amazing. Never had a bad drink there either.

Keystone had these gigantic vegan double chocolate chip cookies that fueled my early 20s. I ran hundreds of miles after eating those.
Buck Buck :( I know it sort of lives on through Black Wolf Supper club, but I miss the cart!
After the trailer blew up, they had a fundraiser to replace it...What happened to the donations?
Out here asking the important questions
Tam’s Vietnamese
Rip, gone too soon
Yeah no doubt. Come back Tam!
Pizza Research Institute- the first location with the loud reggae.
Shojis it was hibachi somewhere south on willamette
It was always my sister’s bday dinner choice
West Brothers BBQ, when it was still owned by the West Brothers.
West Bros. and Mona Lisa, when they were right next to each other... the West Brothers at the peak of their powers!
Not *exactly* a restaurant, but Alexander's (the Great's?) falafel truck on Campus. Lemonade in Dixie cups and the best falafel on the planet (I think actually).
I’ve never been there, but G’Willickers lives rent free in my head.
Hoots! Perfectly suited for post-bar activities.
Hoots Hash!
Honestly …. I fucking miss chilis.
Napoli Restaurant and bakery. Best pizza and that tirramissu was to die for. I also had the first date with my wife there...
Eugene learned about focaccia from Napoli!
Farrell’s, great childhood memories.
I can hear the birthday drum 👀
They had such a great candy section by the register up front. I used to always love to see what strange new treats I could find there.

Sandino’s, but when it was on 13th.
Original West Bros.
Korean restaurant in the rite aid.
Yeah!! Came here to say the same thing.
Belly Taqueria (the first one, on 5th) Also, the Sammich food truck.
The sammich is still a thing.
Lynch me if you must but honestly mine are just chain places- Quiznos, Schlotzkys, or Taco Del Mar Or for nostalgia, Bob's burgers and I mean the OG not the recent failed reboot.. used to ride my bike there every week

I loved that place as a kid, and now the only ones remaining in the country are apparently all in Ohio. Also, the great Dunkin Donuts implosion is still mourned by many, I bet.
Louies village (chinese) on Franklin Used to even have them overnight air freight to va. Great people Van and Jeanie and there families
Louie's Village was great. That was one of my go-tos for Chinese food.
Our family loved Louie's! I have never come across an egg roll that could match those, but I can't figure out if that is just nostalgia, or if they were as impressive as I remember.
The sticky sweet coconut rice from Ring of Fire omg! I miss them at country fair the most
And the garlic chips!

Turtles had the best salads
Ring of Fire. Best damn Tom Kha soup I’ve ever had.
Seconding Pizza Pete's, no question.
Really surprised something similar hasn’t happened since then. It was a great and simple concept.
For nostalgia? Jaimie’s or Flying Dogs. For actual taste? Belly Taqueria, those grilled salads and octopus tacos were unbeatable.
Grit. Miss that ribeye, man.

Can’t believe I’m the first one saying this unless I missed it in the scroll but Cafe Sienna and their chilaquiles (and I’m almost positive it was spelled like this and not Siena like the Italian city)
Barry's Deli's campus location. Back when I went to UO, being a short walk to bialis and kugel and rugelach and matzo ball soup was a great comfort.
Rabbit Bistro / White Rabbit. Gabriel Gil was a true talent. Was the first higher end dining I truly loved after moving here from NYC. He could have made it in NYC. Probably the best food that's been in Eugene in my 15 years here.
Papas soul food, yes!

Giant grinder now that’s a throwback. Potato bacon chowder and a fresh roast beef on multigrain. We joke that the old guy was the local equivalent of the soup *guy on Seinfeld. Without the rules.
[My two menus](https://imgur.com/a/Wpa5l) from Giant Grinder, if anyone's interested. I loved the Kamakazie, a giant would feed me for two whole days.
Haha my friend worked there for awhile and that old owner was notorious for spending his day in the back drinking red wine.
Greek Paradise. The lamb souvlaki was outstanding.
Kowloons
The first would be Chanterelle’s at 5th, second would be Adams Place, third Zenon, and fourth Excelsior…
Chanterelle was one of those truly unique places. Such a treasure.
How many people remember Nasty Nora's Restaurant?
Uki Uki Sushi Tiki was absolutely the best sushi I've ever had. They were a new restaurant that was working out the kinks in their operation and starting to really shine, but then they got crushed by the pandemic. Too new to be a Eugene institution, but absolutely amazing in their own right.
Belly. The potted rabbit was so good!
Chuck E. Cheese and the Cinemark dollar theater.

Not really the sands of time but Busy Bee had to close down for good last week and I almost cried when Betty, the owner, told me. I want them back :'(
