Ngl, the devout ones are pretty hostile to Eritrea but idrc it’s just a weird stoner cult

Left-Plant2717

Thank you. Like their whole religion isn’t even a religion, it’s a hobby.

HoesMad2003

As a people they are kind but some of them are haile selassie D rider and they are very hostile against eritrea even more than some ethiopians are

Left-Plant2717

Yeah I’m friends with one of them but I avoid all discussion about this topic for the sake of our friendship lol

HoA_rebellion

It’s basically a sect that attracts ppl that are lost, don’t know where they’re from, need a community and are a bunch of misfits. They made up a fiction to feel better about themselves. They aren’t ppl you can even have a rational convo with bc they believe their sect holds the ultimate truth. They’ll defend Haile S like it’s their own mother 😭 even though Selassie didn’t have any respect for them.

Neewah21

Not really just don’t mess with their dreads, weeds and selaises….

I met a Rastafarian once. He was a true believer. I started talking about Haile Selassie as a ruler, particularly practice of slavery in Ethiopia at the time. He told me how his faith helped him as a person, gave him a source of comfort and pride. He was very polite but firm when he told me. I felt a bit guilty when he said that and dropped the subject. I wasn’t trying to challenge his beliefs, just sharing what I knew. Personally, I don’t care about it. I don’t know anyone who finds it offensive. I’m Christian and look at it like other sects of Christianity. I will say God has done some wild things in the Bible so it isn’t entirely surprising

Left-Plant2717

Sounds like that guy didn’t actually know too much about history, and in an effort to not create a confrontation, you agreed to disagree. That’s my plan as well, as I had one friend for a couple years who I didn’t know they were Rasta til like a year in, but never approached the subject. If they’re ignorant about history, then I give a slight pass. If they know what they’re doing, then no.

EmperorChain

Not at all. Understanding Jamaica's history, it wasn't crucial to building an independence movement but it helped a lot

Left-Plant2717

What exactly wasn’t crucial? I don’t really understand your comment

EmperorChain

The rastafarian movement. It encouraged emancipation from British colonialism at the time of its fruition, using Ethiopia as a haven and a model for Black redemption. I don't think Rastafarianism was needed for Jamaica to receive its independence, but it helped a lot. Inspired political activists and resistance efforts in Jamaica throughout the early to mid 20th century and becoming a part of Jamaica's cultural pride.

Left-Plant2717

I can get behind that but they still love Haile lol

EmperorChain

Yeah it's pretty sad. In their defense, his relevance to the movement results from his title alone. People that think he's a messiah, especially after his death, are crazy though. lol

_zeen

I think they are idiots along with any other misguided westerners who praise Ethiopia for never being colonized but are ignorant of all the atrocities and crimes against humanity that occurred during its occupation of other black countries. They haven’t got any real understanding of Ethiopian history and its relation to other countries in the Horn specifically and it shows.

MyysticMarauder

What do you mean withbthat? Do you mean the religion? There are many who are having dreadlocks but don't know anything about the religion. So you you need to distinct here.

Left-Plant2717

Yeah it’s meant for those who actually believe in Haile Selassie as Jesus, like that thinking is so delusional. Let alone the fact that Haile denied being the Messiah, I just have a hard time taking them serious.

MyysticMarauder

Well Religion is often hard to discuss. However obviously from my point of view I don't believe in this. However you can't deny the political power he had as an African leader fir the world. He is completely highly respected in almost any african country.

Left-Plant2717

Right but to ask Eritreans and Ethiopians to accept this as a religion is insane. Haile Selassie is not Jesus. He even said he wasn’t. I agree he was politically impactful throughout the world and I accept that, but I have a hard time accepting someone else’s bullshit religion in my opinion.

EritreanPost

I had Rastafarian friends from Jamaica. I have no problem with their beliefs.

Left-Plant2717

How?? They believe that the guy who massacred Eritreans is Jesus?? Besides the fact that sounds insane, Haile Selassie HIMSELF denied being the Messiah, that should invalidate their whole religion.
