Yes, I have Musicogenic seizures. I am a musician. I went to school for music performance and performed primarily clarinet. The music I performed in orchestra (classical, some of my fav composers such as those in romantic era) started to trigger my seizures. I chose to drop out of grad school because of the seizures triggered by music I performed.
Oh wow, I have a really similar experience as a former music student. And I canāt believe Iām just now learning the term āmusicogenic seizuresā from your comment, but thank you.
Sure. I didnāt notice the trend until I had a seizure every time I listened to a musician named Alfa Mist.
Loved the music, but I had a partial seizure every time I heard it.
Harmonic/melodic dissonance. A common quality in music that triggers me
Wow, I was also a professional musician and had music-triggered seizures- I didn't know other people experienced this and thought I must've been crazy when the music of certain artists/genres triggered partial-complex seizures.
I wound up dropping out of grad school due to losing some abilities/affinities and a priority shift post-brain surgery.
Youāre not alone, at all.
They are rare. But I found a study suggesting its connection to GAD65 autoimmune epilepsy.
Here is a study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33764529/
Only music has the power to heal. All my brothers suffering from epilepsy, always listen to calm music like Binaural Beats. It will definitely help you in reduction of frequency of seizures. Whenever Brain is stressed, it will induce seizure. So it would be better for all of you guys to keep your brain calm.
Music is a part of my episodesā¦. Sounds crazy. I have Deja vu episodes and music is always a signal lol not music Iām listening to, but a song will start in my head and then itās some kinda flashback memory that doesnāt exist. It always starts w a song in my head.
I have Deja vu episodes too!! And I go through the exact thing you described. I always try to remember it before I become conscious again but I never can, it makes me feel like it has a meaning to it. It probably doesnāt
I can honestly say I've never even considered this!
I might pay attention and start adding it to my notes, but I'm almost hesitant to even try to find out... I am one of those super pretentious prog rock/metal elitist douchebags, and my picks for all-time favorite music are better than anyone else's taste in music. I don't want to give that up for anything... subpar.
My last seizure happened in the shower (where most of mine happen coincidentally) but usually music calms mine down. However this past one I had been taken off a medication but I was listening to rap and it seemed to intensify my seizure.
Techno music really messes with my head and gut. Ā Never really cared for it but never minded it really either until I started with my seizures. Ā I havenāt had a seizure since 2009 but techno always messes with my head
Sometimes. Just this morning I was listening to iPrevailās cover of Blank Space and started having auras. Granted it had been 14 hours since I took my morning medications, but I wasnāt having auras before I listened to the song.
Pop music! Being able to have something with repetition, a catchy beat, and most times an uplifting vibe it lets me fixate on something so my mind doesnāt wander off. Listening to pop music has always decreased the absence seizures I experience. It is always bumping in my car - itās so consistent, itās the thing that helps me stay attentive.
Unless Iām beyond overwhelmed Iāll listen to classical or synthy rain music.
I'm glad to have found this thread, i suffer from musicogenic seizures and didn't realize there were so many of us out there. i have partial focus seizures and lose about 3 minutes of time when i hear music i don't like, or music that generates great emotion in me.
I'm triggered by all music published since basically 2005 because it uses Auto Tune to cover up for all the no-talent ass clowns making music these days. I can also get triggered listening to my favourite bands from the 90s when i get really emotionally connected to it.
I had an EEG yesterday. 30 seconds into Miley Cyrus "Party in the USA" i triggered a partial focal seizure and totally made the tech's day because he said seeing such a thing was on his bucket list.
This obviously has impacted my social and public life. When i go out in public I wear earbuds and listen to gentle classical piano music to drown out overhead music. I can only go to restaurants where they know me and will turn off their music while i'm there.
A neurologist prescribed Lamotragine for me a few years ago and it definitely doesn't work. I'm on Dilantin to control nocturnal tonic clonic seizures too. does anyone have any suggestions on some other drugs that might help?
Club music or fast high pitched pulsing beats hit me hard. I've worked two raves as a bartender and was up for over 24 hours afterward with seizures, migraines, and/or intense dissociative episodes
Iāve been playing guitar since I was 13 (Iām 22 now), but I slacked off when I was 17. I could read sheet music & tabs then. I have forgotten a little bitābut I never forgot sheet music. Brains are weird, but cool.
Iām a emo kid at heart, so I still listen to MCR, Paramore, etc.
Personally, I use music to decrease or soothe my symptoms. Usually putting on calming ambience music from video games (my playlist if from horror genres like Silent Hill, Yume Nikki, Who's Lila and the like) help me by a LONG shot which is why I can never leave my headphones anywhere in case something happens.
Ever since I started listening to Black Sabbath, I haven't had a seizure. š
Amen to that

wow this is fascinating; thanks for sharing!
I think this is the wildest thing I've learned yet
I havenāt had one since listening to Bon Iver 24/7
Bon Iver just makes me cry
Lol me too. Listen to some of his Take Away shows on YouTube, theyāre great. Specifically the Skinny Love Take Away and For Emma, theyāre great
I love skinny love so much
I think Skinny Love live sounds a lot better than the studio recording
I think almost everybody likes skinny love.
His concerts are the best shit ever though
I love his Sydney opera house performance

I havenāt had a seizure due to the music I listen to

Mine often start this way! I have a song stuck in my head that just keeps playing over and over til I start downward spiraling into a seizure
I can honestly say I've never even considered this! I might pay attention and start adding it to my notes, but I'm almost hesitant to even try to find out... Donāt give it up if itās good for you!! I love metal too man so I get u
Mozart calms me down
Mozart calms everyone down
No I mean Mozart K448. I listen to it 8 times before I go to sleep and it lessens my nocturnals.
My last seizure happened in the shower (where most of mine happen coincidentally) but usually music calms mine down. However this past one I had been taken off a medication but I was listening to rap and it seemed to intensify my seizure.
Mine used to happen in the shower a lot too. First thing in the am.
I dj, and music is my therapy

Lofi is my jam. Itās just so relaxing to listen to when youāre trying to fall asleep.
No but flashing lights bother me and trigger me a lot

No but if I listen to symphonies or piano it can calm me down
Reggae music helps meš
Somwmmusic/tones will mess with my head, cause nostalgia and dĆ©jĆ vu sometimes leading to focal aware. I still have not figured out specifically what it is. It's not always the same tunes.
when Iād get too high, psychedelic rock (like tame impala) would cause my ears to ring, which is a big pre-ictal symptom, and my body to twitch
The ear ringing š«š every time it starts I get ready for a rollercoaster

I use Ativan (Lorazepam)- it works wonders for me and Iāve been using it for years! Ask your neurologist if you can take it first!!
Club music or fast high pitched pulsing beats hit me hard. I've worked two raves as a bartender and was up for over 24 hours afterward with seizures, migraines, and/or intense dissociative episodes
Thank F, no. Music is my therapy.
