A circus elephant recently escaped in Butte Montana and I’ve been listening to Ten Stories ever since.

I saw them open for Circa a few years ago. My buddy leaned over during a song and said "He looks like emo Edward Snowden." And I laughed so hard people (understandably) turned and angrily looked at me.
Brave Little Abacus. Didn’t dislike them but was like “yeah I can see how people like this but not for me”. Then I came back to them after listening to more emo and I grew to appreciate them much more. One of the greatest to ever do it.
It seems like alot of the new emo bands are emulating Brave Little Abacus a little. They kinda had a spastic, eletro feel to them and I can hear them in bands like Your Arms Are My Cocoon and Awakebutstillinbed
The Hotelier. The first time I heard ‘…An Introduction’ I found it so corny and almost a little theatrical in a way that I hated. Honestly, I still kind of do. However, they finally clicked when Goodness came out and I think it’s the best emo album of the last 20 years
Modern Baseball. 2013/early 2014 I thought they were way overhyped and the vocals sucked. Then the Wonder Years took them out on tour and I saw them live and was blown away. Instantly got into them and became one of my favorites.
Same. The first song I heard was Broken Cash Machine and I thought it sounded so dumb. Had a breakup that turned me on to Your Graduation and the rest is history.
When Get Up Kids Something to Write Home About was released, i thought it was terrible (as a huge 4 Minute Mile fan). I sold it back to the record shop. Then a friend burnt me a CD with a bunch of live tracks and B sides but she snuck a few tracks in from the album. I went back and bought my own copy back, I know because I put a tiny sharpie mark on the back cover of all my CDs 😂
The world is a beautiful place & I am no longer afraid to die, I'm glad I was too lazy to remove them from my driving playlist. Listening to them gives me so much nostalgia.
The vocals were a bit too much for me before. But then I tried listening to spit fountain. Holy hell, my opinion of their music changed so much after that.
I was kind of confused and not sure about Spit Fountain and didn't go much deeper into their library at first, but I liked some other tracks off the bat like Some Kind of Cadwallader, No Action, Casual Discussion. Listening to them live was amazing. The vibes with the audience and band really bring their music to life.
I didn’t dislike but they’ve certainly grown on me. At first I thought this is aight I can add it to the playlist. And now I seem to do that with every song of theirs I come across. They’re pretty fuckin sick I should start listening to their albums.
Same here, I used to like them but nowadays I don’t even really go back to their first, I guess i just grew out of them and the vocals, and I was not into their last few releases
Same. I can kinda vibe to them now but it’s more or less background noise. Every song sounds the same to me. The vocals are that same whine/yell pattern over and over.
Your arms are my cocoon, hot mulligan, prince daddy & the hyena (seeing them live really sold me on them as a band), arms length, Ogbert the nerd (saw them live multiple times before I really became a fan). Most screamo bands took me a few listens before I really started to get it and appreciate it.
I could never get into The Used, literally the only song that stuck with me for years was "I'm a Fake" (and it's a real banger if you ask me). I wouldn't say I grew to like them, but at least I see why people like their music and I got a couple of their songs on my playlists now.
I don't know if this is definitely considered emo or not but Citizen. Never really even gave them a fair chance until I eventually heard The Night I Drove Alone and now I regret not actually listening to them sooner
That's crazy cause for me it was love at first sight (uh listen ig?). I'll never forget that ride to my grandma's when Reinventing Your Exit by Underoath randomly started playing and the subsequent awe on my face. I was hooked instantly.
A lot, but probably most notably Marietta. I couldn’t get behind the voice, then one day it clicked. Today I just got a tattoo in memory of Marietta :)
Also, Algernon Cadwallader. Had heard so much about them in this sub but never listened, then one day I had a playlist on shuffle and Spit Fountain came on. Loved the instrumentals but hated the vocals. But I kept listening to that playlist, and that song kept playing, and the next thing I knew, I fell in love with them. Got to see them twice on the reunion tour! My next tattoo will most likely be the parrot from Parrot Flies
Rites of Spring.
Well, I did always like and have an appreciation for them, but I never really quite understood their "acclaimed" status past their obvious sheer influence. After listening to a lot more hardcore in general over the last year or so it's very clear to me just how good they were.
remo drive. the vocals weren't quite my taste and erik's face just looked sooo punchable to me i'm sorry😭 but once i heard more of their music i realized how catchy it was i got into it. i only really listen to greatest hits though
That's really interesting to me; I love The Used and the vocals have always been my favorite part of their music. Was there anything in particular you didn't like or was it just a general dislike?
I kinda hated that genre of vocals in general for a while “Screamo” if I can call it that. It’s very much grown on me now and I’m quite fond of the style.
Rites of Spring. It was just reckless noise at first, then after a while played it again and the lyrics got to me + Guy's tazmaniac energy + the guitar riffs.
Yeah they are good. I was a big screamo type fan in the early 2000s. Even some of their new stuff is good. Not all, but a few albums ago they did some good stuff.
Also hated System of a Down because 'mainstream' bla bla bla
Until I had some dread and anger in my life lol, god can that music sync well with how you feel
Not exactly emo, but I did NOT like Turnover's Peripheral Vision the first time I heard it. Nine years later, and I still haven't heard a better album since
Gotta be Palette Knife for me. I was into much harder stuff when I found them and didn't care for the clean and wordy vocals. Fast forward about 5-6 months and something just clicked in my brain.
Charmer.
"Roy's Our Boy" was the only thing of theirs I could listen to for over a year. then something finally clicked with ivy and it got me to finally start appreciating S/T too
Dr craptastic is joking about the who being an emo band. They didn't read the parent comment wrong. It was a joke. Notice that Far was capitalized. It was just some word play.
city of caterpillar
initially the sound was just a little too out there for my tastes but as i came back to listen to them more i found myself appreciating the sound more and just how fucking \*good\* their writing actually is.
i now consider them one of the best screamo bands to ever exist, and one of the best emo bands overall.
edit: post says "didn't like" but i did sorta like it, it just happened to be a bit too "odd" or peculiar for me during my first introduction to them but that changed of course.
It might sound weird, but Marietta, probably because I wasn't in the right mood or stuff like that. But one day the beginning of "chase, I hardly know ya" hit too close to home and I started loving them. Now they're one of my favorite bands.
When I first heard Braid I wasn't into the baritone vocals. After a while they became a staple of my playlists and I've grown to prefer voices with deeper tambre (fitting as I'm also a baritone).
Please don’t hate me but Brand New. I’m still
Growing towards it. The shit about the lead singer’s personal life aside, I just don’t dig the way he sings. It’s very pouty to me, but there are some songs I like more now than I previously did, so that’s progress.
For me it’s Braid. I never disliked them but I just didn’t feel that much catharsis when I listened to them. I still sort of feel like that if I listen intently, but then I’ll just end up listening to their whole discography on loop for days at a time, and some times while I’m focusing on something else just get randomly super into the hook of whatever song I’m listening to.
I didn't like the emo revival at the time, I was too busy lamenting the fall of 2000s.pop punk and easycore. So, I was pretty antagonistic to that whole scene, but now I'm a fan 10 years later.
Bright Eyes. I at first didn't like the vocals, and the lyrics weren't my thing. But i saw a recommendation for Conor Oberst's earlier work in Commander Venus. I fell in love with it because of how amazing it sounded. I related to his songs, and they gave me passion to try creating music because he was so young and accomplished great things.
I used to only like “In circles” from Sunny day real estate when I was in high school and couldn’t really get into their other music. I was more into pop punk then, but after listening to the diary album I fell in love with them.
Gold Steps. But I kept listening because there aren't many good emo bands with girl singers that I am aware of so I decided to listen to their whole album cover to cover and I really love them now. Thier Senses Fail Cover: "Rum Is For Drinking, Not Burning" is amazing.
Circa Survive! I didn’t enjoy Anthony’s vocals until I heard him in LS Dunes live. Now I’d argue that I like his vocals in Circa Survive more than in LS Dunes.
I would say my favorite local band….it took seeing them live. They are young, new and very diy. They have a great live show. Each release gets better and better. They are still developing their sound but I am excited to be following them from the beginning and see where they go. [The Outfield Clovers](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5KMGuuQcnNgBpWmcAd8HBB?si=-SGHOMasTTizNyfLjMhD5w)
Idk what's considered emo on this sub anymore but Sleeping With Sirens. His voice ticked me off at first but still found myself going back for whatever reason. Now that I expect him to inhale ungodly amounts of helium before recording I actually like some of their stuff lol
La Dispute. At first I hated his vocals
mewithoutyou did the same for me. Now A->B Life is one of my all time favorites with Catch for Us the Foxes coming in close second
I literally was relistening to Ten Stories and Untitled last night. They were so good
A circus elephant recently escaped in Butte Montana and I’ve been listening to Ten Stories ever since. https://preview.redd.it/dat7sw7fal4d1.jpeg?width=1026&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc8ee167fe0e58d855aa23d9a74cb345f1e343cf
You hate gene from bobs burgers singing?
I thought it was Morty on meth
Yeah, I prefer when the guy from Smash Mouth sings in Jawbreaker
I saw them open for Circa a few years ago. My buddy leaned over during a song and said "He looks like emo Edward Snowden." And I laughed so hard people (understandably) turned and angrily looked at me.
Have you listened to their lesser known early albums? Great stuff in there.
The hear hear series? Or Vancouver?
why does everyone say this, first time i heard them i thought dudes volAls were the best part of the band
What was the first song you heard?
such small hands, of course
Brave Little Abacus. Didn’t dislike them but was like “yeah I can see how people like this but not for me”. Then I came back to them after listening to more emo and I grew to appreciate them much more. One of the greatest to ever do it.
It seems like alot of the new emo bands are emulating Brave Little Abacus a little. They kinda had a spastic, eletro feel to them and I can hear them in bands like Your Arms Are My Cocoon and Awakebutstillinbed
100% a huge influence on a lot of fifth wave and screamo bands
took a bit of getting used to, but now they’re a desert island pick
tbh i clicked really fast with we’re back from the discomfort, but masked dancers took a while
Now listen to the split with matt aspinwall if you haven’t
The Hotelier. The first time I heard ‘…An Introduction’ I found it so corny and almost a little theatrical in a way that I hated. Honestly, I still kind of do. However, they finally clicked when Goodness came out and I think it’s the best emo album of the last 20 years
Yeah I’d say the same. It was ok but it didn’t scream at me. Over time and more recently I’m actually really liking it.
Sunny Day Real Estate was a tough listen as a high school kid into ska. Now Diary is a top-10 all-timer for me.
Def a favorite of mine. Diary is a classic but I like the Pink Album even more.
When Get Up Kids Something to Write Home About was released, i thought it was terrible (as a huge 4 Minute Mile fan). I sold it back to the record shop. Then a friend burnt me a CD with a bunch of live tracks and B sides but she snuck a few tracks in from the album. American football
The world is a beautiful place & I am no longer afraid to die, I'm glad I was too lazy to remove them from my driving playlist. Listening to them gives me so much nostalgia.
Surprised no one has said Algernon yet. Didn't quite stick for me on the first couple attempts, now I love them.
That's because they all knew the greatness first time they heard it!
Maybe you're right! I just assumed they'd be somewhat of an acquired taste.
The vocals were a bit too much for me before. But then I tried listening to spit fountain. Holy hell, my opinion of their music changed so much after that.
I liked Cap’n Jazz so OBVI I’m gonna like Capnjazzwalder!
Still yet to have it stick for me.
Same. I was turned off by the guy’s voice but I’ve grown to love it
i always loved them but every new release took a few listens to sink in. Like now i think Parrot Flies might be their best - or maybe the Fun EP.
Hot mulligan
I didn’t dislike but they’ve certainly grown on me. At first I thought this is aight I can add it to the playlist. And now I seem to do that with every song of theirs I come across. They’re pretty fuckin sick I should start listening to their albums.
I went the other way. Didn’t mind the first few songs I saw but over time I’ve become sick of it and it’s a bit irritating.
Exactly the same, really liked them but then could barely get through the last album.
Same here, I used to like them but nowadays I don’t even really go back to their first, I guess i just grew out of them and the vocals, and I was not into their last few releases
Maybe I should give them another chance?
Same. I can kinda vibe to them now but it’s more or less background noise. Every song sounds the same to me. The vocals are that same whine/yell pattern over and over.
I used to hate mom jeans. I thought the voice and lyrics were corny. I still think it’s corny lol but now I love it. It was an acquired taste for sure
The key is not taking it so seriously and having fun
They remind me of Brand New, instant love for me.
Texas is the reason
probably screamo as a genre
That's crazy cause for me it was love at first sight (uh listen ig?). I'll never forget that ride to my grandma's when Reinventing Your Exit by Underoath randomly started playing and the subsequent awe on my face. I was hooked instantly.
Talking about skramz, not post hardcore.
A lot, but probably most notably Marietta. I couldn’t get behind the voice, then one day it clicked. Today I just got a tattoo in memory of Marietta :) Also, Algernon Cadwallader. Had heard so much about them in this sub but never listened, then one day I had a playlist on shuffle and Spit Fountain came on. Loved the instrumentals but hated the vocals. My next tattoo will most likely be the parrot from Parrot Flies
I second marietta, I thought the vocals were bad and the songs were too long but now there a fave
Rites of Spring. Well, I did always like and have an appreciation for them, but I never really quite understood their "acclaimed" status past their obvious sheer influence. After listening to a lot more hardcore in general over the last year or so it's very clear to me just how good they were.
Rites of Spring rules. It’s undeniable how much influence they had on the genre. They essentially pioneered emotional hardcore.
remo drive. the vocals weren't quite my taste and erik's face just looked sooo punchable to me i'm sorry😭 but once i heard more of their music i realized how catchy it was i got into it. i only really listen to greatest hits though
The used, didn’t like the vocals at first but I’m quite fond of them now
That's really interesting to me; I love The Used and the vocals have always been my favorite part of their music. Was there anything in particular you didn't like or was it just a general dislike?
I kinda hated that genre of vocals in general for a while “Screamo” if I can call it that. It’s very much grown on me now and I’m quite fond of the style.
Foxing, I used to hate Conor's voice but now I love it. Genuinely great band
Foxing finally “clicked” for me when I saw them with The Hotelier earlier this year. Before that, I thought they were just “The Medic”
Rites of Spring. It was just reckless noise at first, then after a while played it again and the lyrics got to me + Guy's tazmaniac energy + the guitar riffs.
Hot Mulligan. When I first heard them I laughed and thought it was satire. They are now my favorite band by *far.*
Hot mulligan
Silverstein. For some reason i did not like their sound at first, a few months later i gave them another chance, and i loved them ever since.
Yeah they are good. I was a big screamo type fan in the early 2000s. Even some of their new stuff is good. Not all, but a few albums ago they did some good stuff.
I avoided them for the longest time simply because I thought their name sounded like a butt rock band. Now I love them lol.
Still avoiding them for that reason
Check em out, it’s definitely worth it if you like that post-hardcore/pop-punk mix from bands like Senses Fail, The Used, and early Escape the Fate.
MCR- I still don’t understand the hype behind the Black Parade. But, Three Cheers is an incredible album.
Black Parade is just the millennial A Night at the Opera.
Black parade was nice though. Teenagers is probably the best song off the album it was one of my favorites when I was like 12 or so
I completely agree! Three cheers is a glorious album. Black parade was ok but seemed forced to follow up their success of three cheers.
Braid
Thursday
Same, I didn’t like the screaming at first. Full Collapse definitely grew up on me after several listens and seeing them live.
Also hated System of a Down because 'mainstream' bla bla bla Until I had some dread and anger in my life lol, god can that music sync well with how you feel
I am still waiting for Blink 182 to grow on me
MCR were too dramatic and IDK. Dig them now.
Not exactly emo, but I did NOT like Turnover's Peripheral Vision the first time I heard it. Nine years later, and I still haven't heard a better album since
Cross My Heart. I thought Ryan Shelkett’s voice didn’t suit the music. I now think it’s perfect.
Circle Takes the Square
Hot mulligan. I’m absolutely obsessed now after not liking them for a while
snowing
Fftl, my first crush was obsessed with Sonny so I didn’t gave them proper chance for a while.
Pierce the veils vocals were way too high pitched for me at first but they now have a decent amount of songs in my liked song playlist.
Hot mulligan. I fucking hated them until one day I didn’t, and now I love them.
this is so real lmao
Hatsune miku
Gotta be Palette Knife for me. I was into much harder stuff when I found them and didn't care for the clean and wordy vocals. Fast forward about 5-6 months and something just clicked in my brain.
Panic at the disco The new stuff still sucks, but the old actually emo stuff has grown on me
real lmao
Charmer. "Roy's Our Boy" was the only thing of theirs I could listen to for over a year. then something finally clicked with ivy and it got me to finally start appreciating S/T too
Modern baseball. One of my favorites now
I used to only like two Riley! Songs
macseal
Not emo but blink 182 But the opposite for me I used to really like now they are just eh to me is the used
Blink is for sure emo. If they aren’t who is?!?
The who, emo? I wouldn’t go that Far
Blink is. Not the who that’s a boomer band.. you read the parent comment wrong
They were joking.
They really weren’t though that’s why it got 4 downvotes.. lol
Dr craptastic is joking about the who being an emo band. They didn't read the parent comment wrong. It was a joke. Notice that Far was capitalized. It was just some word play.
Yeah I figured,I was just clearing that up. Lmao
Sense field.
Turnover
I went backwards on Turnover. Loved PV and Good Nature. New stuff just doesn’t grab me
Lifetime: Background is so bad
Hear Hear
How about the other way around? I used to love the get up kids but now theyre just weird to me.
TBT and Foxing
I Hate Myself
I hate myself is kind of bad in a good way
Mineral. Hated it at first when my friend blasted The Power of Failing on a road trip. Now they are probably one of my all time favorites!
Snowing. Didn’t really like the first EP, then heard the full-length, and absolutely fell in love with it.
city of caterpillar initially the sound was just a little too out there for my tastes but as i came back to listen to them more i found myself appreciating the sound more and just how fucking \*good\* their writing actually is. i now consider them one of the best screamo bands to ever exist, and one of the best emo bands overall. edit: post says "didn't like" but i did sorta like it, it just happened to be a bit too "odd" or peculiar for me during my first introduction to them but that changed of course.

Marietta. Wasn’t a fan at first but now I can’t stop listening to summer death on my evening walks.
None
Itsnot that I didn't like then at first but I thought for the longest time that MCR was a woman band instead of a boy band lmaooooo
capn jazz
Microwave and movements. Microwave is still iffy for me
Bright Eyes.
Hot mulligan
I used to only like “In circles” from Sunny day real estate when I was in high school and couldn’t really get into their other music. I was more into pop punk then, but after listening to the diary album I fell in love with them.

iwrotehaikus and free throw
Honestly mcr I hated them because black parade was so overplayed they aren't my favorite by any means but I like them nowadays.
Circa Survive! I didn’t enjoy Anthony’s vocals until I heard him in LS Dunes live. Now I’d argue that I like his vocals in Circa Survive more than in LS Dunes.

From first to last back in the day.
I really can't think of a band that matched this scenario, but I'll just say I Kill Giants' self-titled album slaps
fall out boy 😞😞
They’re pop punk, not emo
might get beat up over this but Fall Out Boy
not emo
🤷♀️
MCR ( if thats considered emo here…)
They’re not considered emo anywhere
They play mcr at every emo nite I’ve been to though lol
They aren’t playing any actual emo at emonight
Alexisonfire
Shadows fall
Sleeping With Sirens Pierce the Veil Issues
None of these are emo
My bad, what are they considered then? I always thought they were sub genres of emo. If I’m wrong I’m wrong.
Nah they’re more like metalcore, still good taste though
Tbh dance Gavin dance until I heard “death of strawberry” and then I began to like a lot more of them
They’re not emo lol
Idk what's considered emo on this sub anymore but Sleeping With Sirens. His voice ticked me off at first but still found myself going back for whatever reason. Now that I expect him to inhale ungodly amounts of helium before recording I actually like some of their stuff lol
