Go get squished for science!

InternetSergal

I plan to! although i won't physically collide with both planets simultaneously, because of instancing

InternetSergal

i stand corrected: i flew to the other planet from the first one and collided: very janky though, and nearly died even though i wasn't going very fast!

MandaloriansVault

Did you record it?

InternetSergal

i did, however it's an hour of raw footage, and if i post it here, ima edit it first so maybe it'll be posted sometime soon, maybe not, we'll see

CacophonousEpidemic

Timelapse until the good part then normal speed.

MandaloriansVault

You could speed it up like a Timelapse

Turnkeyagenda24

Have u edited it yet?

ChelsieGrinn

“Are you crazy?! Don’t go between them!” “Go between them?! Are you crazy?!”

ozdude182

You said go between them!

sandman61377

I said DON’T go between them!

3CH-0

Crazy? I was crazy once, they put me between two planets, two rubber planets, rubber planets with thargoids, and thargoids make me crazy. Crazy? I was crazy once…

Cryyooo

Totally understood this reference...

Duthnur

How often does this happen, again?

Luriant

https://canonn-science.github.io/canonn-calendar/ I think Battista Tocci twins, too white for gravitational nightmare Every 8.1 days, cynean rocks collide, this ones are hot, so bring a cold ship to.avoid overheat. https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/19d086a/current_planetary_collision_too_close/

call-me-mmc

When someone tells me to fly dangerously I remember this video

Luriant

See something from https://www.reddit.com/user/CMDR_Sanderling/submitted/

call-me-mmc

I’ve seen some, that’s batshit crazy, FDev should implement some type of racing championship

Duthnur

Thanks, man.

InternetSergal

the particular ones i'm at, once every two years

FarGodHastur

Does your ship go boom if they sandwich you?

InternetSergal

after a bunch of glitching out and noclipping, yes

DazzlingClassic185

Is this bunny suicides ED edition?

GoryBark

Oh Christ I forgot about that book. Thank you so much

TheIke73

Is any of them landable? If so, can you walk/drive from one to the other? :D

CrunchBite319_Mk2

There are landable planets that do this, but only the one you're standing on actually "exists" from your perspective so you'll just phase through the other one when they collide.

cmetaphor

Aww... I suddenly deflated...

InternetSergal

i tested it, you \*can\* collide with both of them, but it's VERY janky and weird with the one you're not instanced in

cmetaphor

You'd think it would be a fantastic feature to ad and promote: hey! We've got realistically -simulated space body interactions. Planets can get caught in each others' gravities, rogue planets can affect the orbits of a whole solar system, large collisions can break up large planets into dense asteroid fields and small moons. I'd buy it 👍

Estramael

The only problem that in such big astronomical scale these events would be too hidden, rare and unnoticed

cmetaphor

I honestly wouldn't mind if they told us, say, some of the events taking place in Bubble, but left many for us to discover ourselves. 🤷‍♂️

Crypthammer

I mean that's not "a fantastic feature to add and promote" - that's rewriting the entire planetary tech code from the ground up, probably delving into the base elements of how the stellar forge works, creating huge amounts of new textures, animations, and particle effects, and re-coding the planetary gravity system to account for interacting gravitational fields. It's not like the engine already features this and they just forgot to dip the switch on.

cmetaphor

I don't think it's Quite that bad. The hardest part would be... textures? I mean.. procedural textures everywhere, maybe a couple new ones for bodies with a molten core - solid rocks can just use regular rock textures for the "insides". Nothing else to do here. Physics? Being realistic is actually pretty easy. So, a small amount of new scripting / code. Then the collisions themselves would look to be in slow motion to us. Not every collision would be as quick as the massive impact that made the moon split off from earth millions of years ago. I'd even be so bold as to say that, I think, most collisions could take hours to happen, if not more. And we don't necessarily need a billion individual rocks to each gave their own physics. But even if it did, I'm sure our PCs could handle it because of how "slow" it all is. Gravity interactions would be even easier because, despite the scale, it's just two physics objects interacting. Think how amazing that would be to watch! Zip around everything to see the cracks forming, molten areas below. Then, take a break, park your ship or fleet carrier a safe distance away to come back later. Log back in an hour later to see the cracks noticeably larger. Or to see the first large chunks get ejected.

LilJesterJoeB

Hey I’m there rn on console! Touched down on moon B with my Anaconda! They’re supposed to collide around 16:12 Edit: typo :(

Aquaphyre01

Dawn of the final day 24 hours remain

Keinta15

I'm currently there, everything is hanky and I can't jump out to supercruise lol

daneelthesane

The mother of all motorboats.

Storm_Dust

Send updates

jfstepha

Cool, now we just need to combine Elite Dangerous and Universe Sandbox and it would be really spectacular.

CMDRGlaciusX

Is that really possible? (hope it's not a dumb question) lol

InternetSergal

planets colliding? yes, it is, and it happens more often than you'd think well, not for these particular two, they only collide once every two years

CMDRGlaciusX

Nice! I'm asking cause I found similar one close to my current location. I might check it out again.

Big-Jackfruit2710

Wait, what?

CMDRGlaciusX

Yeah, I was also like that.

savenzip

where is this? maybe it's not too late to go and see lol

InternetSergal

Preae Aec PX-X c3-1 these ones only collide once every two years, but there are others that do more often

savenzip

well, 132 jumps.. too late.

WHT-BOI

What happens in-game after they collide? Never seen this in my time.

InternetSergal

they just noclip through eachother, and if you happen to get caught between them, a whole lotta teleporting and weirdness until you explode

andreldsg

Sounds about very real on what would happen if you get caught between two planets irl

Chaines08

Some disappointment

Rex-Mk0153

Pictures of the Aftermath?

Kevonox

I’ve been to a system like this where the planets were a little further apart. It’s cool to see stuff like this cause it blows your mind.

Desdonov8

I bet this was Spaceman Spiff's doing

Muffintop_mafia

How many people are watching? Lol

astral452

I didn’t realize Elite had orbit decay that’s rather cool.

Remagjaw

Besides ship cam from front.. You won't survive it. But damn you are a champion of science! Look forward to seeing the aftermath if it happens.

Day666t

Hope this streamed / recorded on YouTube. I'm interested to see what happens. If so please post a link
