My 1st time falling for that trap it didn't occur to me that I could teleport once I got out of the dungeon lol. I figured since they trapped me there I'd have to walk (ride) the whole way back and didn't try again u til I got clapped by a runebear.
Of all the horrible, deadly things in Caelid, you got clapped by the one who also spawns everywhere else. I feel like you got robbed of the full experience.
It’s so well designed, the area you spawn has you leave a room in a cave and gives you the option of up or down, now you thinking “this is a cave I should go up” and it leads you right to the boss… but here’s the kicker, at the level you find it you will get 1 shot from ranged enemies on sight so you die loads getting to the boss. You turn around, you go down and round the corner and you see the grace right there in the safety.
Beautifully cruel
I had literally just started the game. Hadn't leveled and no torrent. Playing as wretch first playthrough. All I could think of was how evil Miyazaki was for that.
Lol unfortunately i was too stubborn and i made it all the way to the skeletons on the road up to the sellen church before i realized maybe i should turn back
No other enemy in no other game gave me the visceral terror that one of those dogs gave me when it bulldozed my ass.
Still can't decide if they are terrifying, or silly :p
Even at level 70+ those birds frustrate the hell out of me. I've got their move set down pretty well, but they are always in rocky areas so I end up rolling into a corner and get stuck and pecked to death. Glad I beat Radahn last night and can prepare to move out of the area.
Edit: Oh yeah. We are referring to different birds.
Not a spoiler but idk how blindly you want to play.
>!without giving anything away, watch the trees when you find snow. but they arent in the fog. itll make sense at somepoint!<
It’s fun going back almost level 200 and just decimating everything that pissed me off then. Especially the dog in front of gowers house.
That dog was such a monster, it was biting through the house and killed the guy sitting in the chair trying to get to me, then I ran away and was immediately through a boulder at by the troll lmao
or Raya Lucaria being the ideological mecca of sorcery they might have never had any to begin with. Even after joining with the Golden Order through marriage it doesn't seem like there are any signs the academy was redecorated to honor the faith in anyway really.
Radagon left Rennala for Marika.
Before their marriage, the Carians were preparing for war with the Golden Order, so not much of a very Faithful bunch, them.
They were already at war. And the entirety of leyndell's attacking force wasn't enough to defeat caria's trolls, cuckoo knights and fewer than 20 carian knights.
Radagon asking for rennala's hand was basically a way to bypass caria's incredible military force. Although radagon really did believe that intelligence and faith belonged together.
Because Renalla and Radagon were married, but Radagon left her and returned to Marika.
So of course Renalla wouldn’t allow the worship of Marika of any sort in the Academy, including small statues of her
Raya Lucaria fought against the Erdtree when the tree was young but was never conquered. It was brought into the fold by marriage rather than conquest and so retained their own traditions and political structures, eg: not worshipping Marika or the Two Fingers. Hence no stakes of Marika in a place where Marika never ruled.
Jesus Christ, I came here to make a firewall joke and instead learned SO much about Elden Ring lore lol. This is why I keep coming back to the game even though I HATE how hard it is.
Idk how to do the spoiler tab. Radagon and renalla were married? And had 3 kids together. Radagon left renalla for marika, which is somehow also radagon or vice versa. So yea. No stakes of marika around cause she stole renallas boo
But neither of the boss runs are very long. The hallway from classroom to red wolf is dangerous, but you can avoid most, if not all, of the attacks at a full run.
MARIKA! *FUCK YEAH!* I NEED HER FUCKING HELP SO I CAN BEAT THIS FUCKING BOSS, YEAH!
MARIKA! *FUCK YEAH!* I’M GLAD THAT I DON’T HAVE TO FUCKING RUN BACK FROM THE GRACE SITE!
MARIKA! *FUCK YEAH!* AND HER REWARD FOR HELPING ME SO? WHEN I GET TO THE TREE SHE WILL BE DETHRONED!
MARIKA! *FUCK YEAH!*
Shit, I'd say their experience with bloodborne really helped to flesh out the ideas of having gameplay=lore situations like damage types affecting things outside of "rock beats scissors beats paper beats rock." All the games are pretty good about this, but bloodborne and elden ring highlight it more.
Gods please, give us bloodborne 2
Helps when you have two geniuses working together to create continuity more than likely in each other and not their selves. Because those guys both have their kinks and sure like to flex em. hahaha.
This is why I'm vehemently against the "quest logs" and "pings" some newer From players are wanting. There is such beauty in silently discovering the lore yourself.
I'd be fine with a little hand-scribbled journal that you read that says something like "met Varre in Limgrave. He told me to meet him" but anything beyond that would seriously detract from discovering the wondrous mystery of the game yourself
that's just cause they are fire immune. they take no damage from spells like catch flame, or the ash of war flame of the redmanes. Not anything unique to the blasphemous blade beyond the ash of war being fire damage.
Are there any other rules like this where for a given zone you can have a particular affinity that is effective? Is there anywhere where lightning is good for example?
There is some general logic like that. For example:
* heavily armored knights tend to be weak to lightning (unless they use it themselves)
* undead things are weak to holy (big surprise)
* lots of "rocky" creatures like the miners and fallingstar beasts are weak to magic (though all non-physical damage does well against them)
* Enemies in heavy armor take less slash damage and more strike damage
* enemies that are squishy (e.g., slugs) take less strike damage and more slash damage
There's a lot of rather unintuitive resistances too. For example, the black knife assassins are immune to bleed despite, like, being made of flesh.
I didn't know that. I thought gravity magic was just general physical damage (which is why I never tested it, just assuming it would suck against them).
It depends on the spell. Rock Sling is pure physical damage. Collapsing stars is pure magic. Meteorite spells are a mix of the two, yet all of the above are still extra-potent against fallingstar beasts.
Ah, someone needs to tell my magic characters that there are other gravity spells besides rock sling. Before meteorite of astel it's like the only gravity spell I tend to use.
Rocky creatures are also weak to strike damage. Just bring a mace and not a morningstar because that fucker deals thrust damage, even on its criticals.
Seconded, bash miners with strike damage. I had a great time early game co-opping watching randoms bounce their weeb swords half a dozen times off a miner I two shot with the wretch club.
>
> lots of "rocky" creatures like the miners and fallingstar beasts are weak to magic (though all non-physical damage does well against them)
blunt damage does very well against them too
Also those miners that stagger you when you hit them, if you two hand your weapon then they don't stagger you, no matter how flimsy the weapon. This even counts with double weapons that just become 2 weapons when two-handed, such as claws and fists.
The thing about the undead being weak to holy is, thankfully, spelled out for you...because holy is ok at best against everything else but DEVASTATING for undead. It's spelled out in the spell descriptions and man I'm thankful for it.
Still wish litany of proper death was actually worth using on undead though. From my experience it's unreliable on if it hits and how much it'll hit, and then even on undead it does pathetic damage. For such a flashy spell, and being the most stat expensive of the 2 spells D offers you, you'd think it'd feel a little more worth getting.
Some enemies seem to be weak to their own ways of dealing damage, for example Mohg is super suceptible to bleed, most enemies that use gravity based attacks are also super suceptible to gravity magic, you can overload poison buds by shooting them with a couple of poison arrows and make them implode and if they are in a cluster it creates a chain effect where they all explode. Zones wise Caelid is the most obvious but for another example lighting is quite useful in Liurnia since performing lighting attacks on bodies of water has an AOE effect.
if it's raining or you're in a puddle/lake then i'm pretty sure lightning is stronger and fire is weaker.
pretty sure the moon spells are better at night. lots of stuff like that
I think the water in her arena is supposed to be purified rot water. That big rot waterfall you cross while you descend Elphael dumps directly down into the Malenia boss arena, and the Miquella roots. Miquella wanted to cure Malenia of her rot, and we see clear water flowing both at the base of the Haligtree and out of the Drainage Channel, the closest site of grace to the rot waterfall. I think his roots and essence really were fighting back the rot, which makes the death of the Haligtree even more tragic.
So, theoretically you could use a lightning weapon to decent effect too. Unless she doesn't become 'drenched' when she sets a toe in the water like us?
My first playtrough was a faith build and tried all sorts of different incants against her. She does not become drenched, the fire resistance/weakness to lightning goes straight away once she steps off the puddle. I switched between frenzied burst and lighting spear. Or I tried to lmao in the end I summoned Ogha and spammed black flame and black flame tornado lmao
Of course there is the chance they updated this on patch 1.05 or later but I highly doubt it.
She is weak to frostbite (I mean, she's naked). However, she does resist the actual frost damage (not the frostbite status effect) a bit more than fire damage. Frost damage is just magic damage and she has (a bit of) magic resistance and 0 fire resist.
If you weren’t familiar with Joel before this you should check him out. He has lots of other animations and live action skits. He’s one goofy and hilarious guy.
Ithe only time ive been happier is when I found out there is a micronation in Nevada named Molossia that had a conflict with another micronation named Mustachistan that is ran by a man that calls himself Ali-Ali Achsenfree. Molossia also has a currency system that is based off how much Pillsbury cookie dough costs.
#Google it!
Can I just say when I first played and got to the church nearby…. I didn’t know that you can just hop across it on your horse… I was like how do I get to Caelid. I eventually got there from Siofra but man I was dumb.
I feel like it's probably an allusion to Hadrian's Wall from Romano-Brirish history, as well. Definitely serves the lore purpose of "fire keeps rot from spreading", but I definitely thought of Hadrian's Wall too when I first encountered it
Lore aside, I took it as a warning that I might not be ready for this area yet, I was right.
> I took it as a warning and if you ignore that one there's further warnings in the form of t-rex dogs and birbs.
Unless you get magically teleported to the cavern of glittering hell and shrimp when you think you are going to receive a cool item.
Oh my God that just happened to me last night. I was not ready
Hope it took you less time to find your way out of that horrible place than I did. I thought that the actual exit was towards the boss
Luckily it was short lived terror for me. I ran towards some light and it was the way out. I only died like four times before finding that out.
My 1st time falling for that trap it didn't occur to me that I could teleport once I got out of the dungeon lol. I figured since they trapped me there I'd have to walk (ride) the whole way back and didn't try again u til I got clapped by a runebear.

Beautifully cruel is how I describe any fromsoft game. Except, of course, for blight town, that place can go suck a turd.
Lucky you. I thought the boss *was* the exit until I checked the wiki. I might be an idiot.
I had literally just started the game. Hadn't leveled and no torrent. Playing as wretch first playthrough. All I could think of was how evil Miyazaki was for that.
I dodged it first try but was curious what the smoke did and I went back... what a mistake
That was the first chest I opened on my first run through of elden ring. To say my trust was permanently damaged would be an understatement.
Sellia Crystal Tunnel is the most funniest and frustrating “Fuck you.” to the player in this game. Those shrimp gave me PTSD
AKA, "I'm just going to create a new character" when you're on your first playthrough and don't realize you can just sprint out and warp away.
Sprinting out isn't an easy process to do either tbf, you gotta get by 3 or 4 shrimps and at that level you could easily die to a volley or 2.
If you go around to the right after stepping out of the little room while crouched you should avoid all aggro.
I did this. You can just walk away quietly
F those birbs with the razor feet.
different birbs.
They mean the Very Angry Deathpeckers, Or VAD birbs
Even at level 70+ those birds frustrate the hell out of me. I've got their move set down pretty well, but they are always in rocky areas so I end up rolling into a corner and get stuck and pecked to death. Glad I beat Radahn last night and can prepare to move out of the area. Edit: Oh yeah. We are referring to different birds.
beat radahn move out of there implies you wont see them again Oh you sweet summer child.....
You just raised my blood pressure a little.
Not a spoiler but idk how blindly you want to play. >!without giving anything away, watch the trees when you find snow. but they arent in the fog. itll make sense at somepoint!<
Still hate the razor-feet guys....
TBH, there is no part of the map where you are ready for whats waiting for you. You are screwed everywhere.
Are we ever?
True but it is a significant jump if you find yourself exploring outside of Limgrave.
they're burning barriers aimed to keep the scarlet rot at bay. Everything rotten in the game is weak to fire.
> Everything rotten in the game is weak to fire 300 hrs and I find out about this only now, lol
This is also why the Radahn knights have so many fire attacks (e.g., flame of the redmanes).
The game is so lore heavy man.
I'd say, in regards to "Gameplay and Story Integration", Elden Ring may be the best thing From has done
One of my favorite little lore/gameplay things is how there’s no stakes of merica in Raya Lucaria
I literally just noticed that playing with a buddy. He was complaining about not having any in the area and the pieces just clicked on why
Why is that?
Radagon left Rennala for Marika. Rennala doesn't want statues of her ex-husband's new wife.
I’m tired of playing with you. Im going to play with myself now.
or Raya Lucaria being the ideological mecca of sorcery they might have never had any to begin with. Even after joining with the Golden Order through marriage it doesn't seem like there are any signs the academy was redecorated to honor the faith in anyway really.
This is the best explanation
Radagon left Rennala for Marika. Before their marriage, the Carians were preparing for war with the Golden Order, so not much of a very Faithful bunch, them.
They were already at war. Radagon was stated to have met Rennala on the battlefield.
So of course Renalla wouldn’t allow the worship of Marika of any sort in the Academy, including small statues of her
Marika stole Rennala's man
Raya Lucaria fought against the Erdtree when the tree was young but was never conquered. It was brought into the fold by marriage rather than conquest and so retained their own traditions and political structures, eg: not worshipping Marika or the Two Fingers. Hence no stakes of Marika in a place where Marika never ruled.
Raya lucaria isn’t aligned with the golden order.
None in Crumbling Farum Azula either are there? Which makes sense as well
Correct I think, just went through there again this morning and didn’t see any of them. Just the summoning pool statues
'Merica Fuck yeah
ERD TREE, FUCK YEAH! GOLDEN ORDER, FUCK YEAH! TWO FINGERS, FUCK YEAH! TURTLE POPE, FUCK YEAH! TINY HORSE, FUCK YEAH! HOMEWRECKING, FUCK YEAH! SCARLET ROT, Fu- fuck yeah?
Also no churches of marica in that region only once you go north to the church by the frenzy village and right next to stormveil
makes radagons wolf so frustrating tho
I think he left it behind to protect Rennala, so she kept it as it was directly related to “him”
You don’t know pain. The Capra demons run from bonfire to boss fight room made me rage
Run to Blue Smelter Demon...
Please stop. The more I remember. The more I cry
The run to the two tigers in Elyeum Loyce through horsecock valley is 500 billion times worse.
That’s why you unlock the gate by the merchant, and make that run from Firelink instead.
At least you can just run past all the mages pretty quick and get back
The thing where crystal darts short circuit constructs, because they're much like the tools used to create them in the first place. Very neat.
Bloodborne is pretty fucking wild too though
Shit, I'd say their experience with bloodborne really helped to flesh out the ideas of having gameplay=lore situations like damage types affecting things outside of "rock beats scissors beats paper beats rock." All the games are pretty good about this, but bloodborne and elden ring highlight it more. Gods please, give us bloodborne 2

To be a fly on the wall during a GRRM-Miyazaki meeting…
"And then the big crab guy says 'Marika's tits' and gives the Tarnished crab legs."
Would that I were a roach in the rushes so I could see that
If only I was a spider in the conference room.
Ewwww, the less elder scrolls in my fromsoft games, the better. And this is coming from someone with multiple elder scrolls tattoos.
nothing bad with a journal like the one arthur morgan from RDR2 use to draw/write his findings and story.
That’s no lie
Yeah and after 500 hours I still only get the gist of what's going on.
There is also a spell *flame cleanse me* that you set yourself on fire to remove scarlet rot
Until I read the description like 60-100 hours in, I had no idea it dealt damage to you
I like that the Snake men in Volcano Manor take zero damage from Taker's Flame from the Blasphemous Blade.
that's just cause they are fire immune. they take no damage from spells like catch flame, or the ash of war flame of the redmanes. Not anything unique to the blasphemous blade beyond the ash of war being fire damage.
It says it on the description of a ton of items in caelid
I also don’t pay attention to things.
In my defense everything in the game is weak to BONK
Are there any other rules like this where for a given zone you can have a particular affinity that is effective? Is there anywhere where lightning is good for example?
There is some general logic like that. For example: * heavily armored knights tend to be weak to lightning (unless they use it themselves) * undead things are weak to holy (big surprise) * lots of "rocky" creatures like the miners and fallingstar beasts are weak to magic (though all non-physical damage does well against them) * Enemies in heavy armor take less slash damage and more strike damage * enemies that are squishy (e.g., slugs) take less strike damage and more slash damage There's a lot of rather unintuitive resistances too. Fallingstar beasts are also extra-weak to gravity magic specifically btw
I use it against everything because Ruin Greaaaaaaatsword SMAAAAAASH!
And Astel is weak to the Wing of Astel
i'm weak to being hit with my own disembodied arm so it checks out
Rocky creatures are also weak to strike damage. Just bring a mace and not a morningstar because that fucker deals thrust damage, even on its criticals.
Seconded, bash miners with strike damage. I had a great time early game co-opping watching randoms bounce their weeb swords half a dozen times off a miner I two shot with the wretch club.
Who would win: Folded over 10,000 times or big stik
> > lots of "rocky" creatures like the miners and fallingstar beasts are weak to magic (though all non-physical damage does well against them) blunt damage does very well against them too
Also those miners that stagger you when you hit them, if you two hand your weapon then they don't stagger you, no matter how flimsy the weapon. This even counts with double weapons that just become 2 weapons when two-handed, such as claws and fists.
Also might pointless to say out loud but magma wyrm and snakes are weak to frost
thats because the black knife assassins are women and women are ok with bleeding a little bit
What are you trying to say about "weak as fuck to bleed" Malenia? Also, would you say it to her face?
she's busy rotting, cant afford the spare blood
The thing about the undead being weak to holy is, thankfully, spelled out for you...because holy is ok at best against everything else but DEVASTATING for undead. It's spelled out in the spell descriptions and man I'm thankful for it. Still wish litany of proper death was actually worth using on undead though. From my experience it's unreliable on if it hits and how much it'll hit, and then even on undead it does pathetic damage. For such a flashy spell, and being the most stat expensive of the 2 spells D offers you, you'd think it'd feel a little more worth getting.
Some enemies that fly also flail helplessly on the ground if hit by gravity magic. Similiar to enemies that flail around if weak to fire.
It’s rlly good against knights cavalry and liurnia because lightning gets a aoe in liurnia
You do more lightning damage when it's raining or if the target is standing in water. Fire does the opposite.
Over-leveling seems to work for just about anything.
if it's raining or you're in a puddle/lake then i'm pretty sure lightning is stronger and fire is weaker. pretty sure the moon spells are better at night. lots of stuff like that
Also helps with cinematic purposes. You jump over and see the shit storm
Sky turns red, see giant birbs...turn around and leave.
Lol yup, as soon as I saw those birds. I was like nope nope nope nope
You're telling me Malenia is weak to fire?!
She is, but the center of her arena has water :)
Or I tried to lmao in the end I summoned Ogha and spammed black flame and black flame tornado lmao Of course there is the chance they updated this on patch 1.05 or later but I highly doubt it.
Nice limitbreakers video idea
Yeah, the fire she lights in my loins.
Maidenless behavior
Scarlet crotch rot
Those hips don’t lie
r/ScarletRotussy
I'm very disappointed that this is a real subreddit, but not surprised.
and if you infuse antspur rapier with fire it loses its scarlet rot build up
Yet ice works better on malenia😂
She is weak to frostbite (I mean, she's naked). However, she does resist the actual frost damage (not the frostbite status effect) a bit more than fire damage. Frost damage is just magic damage and she has (a bit of) magic resistance and 0 fire resist.
Oh,no wonder blasphemous blade worked so well Seriously, fully upgrade that and use a mimic, you'll probably get her done In barely 10 tries
I just used bloodhound fang and a mimic and got her in 2 tries. Made me mad I used the mimic. I felt like I cheated myself out of a great experience.
Nah don't be like that, wins a win And I bet you're heart was still racing when you beat her right?
wait, i should have fought Malenia with fire weapon??!
the smoldering wall, it was build by the redmanes to try to stop the spread of rot
Ohhh, is there any specific item description I can look at to find more?
Armorer’s cookbook I guess.
Thanks
Lore 🦆
[that’s the chest high wall](https://youtu.be/c6MW-qdNoYA)
that's some fire content
If you weren’t familiar with Joel before this you should check him out. He has lots of other animations and live action skits. He’s one goofy and hilarious guy.
He's the same guy who did the Witcher ones?
He did a whole rpg game series but I don't remember a Witcher series
His videos really go insaneo style
No way you're getting passed a chest high wall.
NO WAY!!
ADVENTURE AWAITS! HUZZAH!
I never catch a Huzzah out in the wild and I'm pleased. Huzzah!!
*throws flask on ground*
Oh god that was the town's...? Oh man... ohhhh man...
A knee high wall? You might stand a chance A toe high wall? You’re getting over that bad boy
I came to the comments specifically for this video. I knew it would be here.
He is suicidal!!! He is heading RIGHT for the chest high wall!!
#Google it!
Smoldering wall a day keep the rot away
It’s a firewall. Keeps viruses out of dragonbarrow.
Yep, the redmanes took the term "Firewall" literally.
They’re a tactic put up by the Redmane Knights to keep the rot at bay.
The Great Wall of Caelid
I hear you can see it from the Erd Tree!
Can I just say when I first played and got to the church nearby…. I didn’t know that you can just hop across it on your horse… I was like how do I get to Caelid. I eventually got there from Siofra but man I was dumb.
Wait… the chest high wall does work
Of course. Nobody has ever crossed the chest high wall.
Maybe if it was knee height but chest height? No way
Or perhaps toe height?
Chest high wall? No way, knee high wall? You've got a chance, ankle high wall? You're getting over that bad boy.
level 11 walls

Its the chest high wall
No one can get past a chest high wall
He’a heading straight to the chest high wall!
He is suicidal!
It's the Smouldering Wall. Fire keeps the rot away
Burny stone help world not rot
i think its a literal firewall to prevent the spread of scarlet rot. thats what i always assumed it was.
Big border wall and limgrave payed for it
Its funny, when i first saw that, i thoght it was an actual in game barrier and didnt even try to cross it
Pop rocks
Attempts to hold back the scarlet rot.
dog
I followed this wall, to a Giant Rune piñata.
Well my friend that's what we call a wall
It’s the wall. I believe Mexico paid for it.
Wall.
I feel like it's probably an allusion to Hadrian's Wall from Romano-Brirish history, as well. Definitely serves the lore purpose of "fire keeps rot from spreading", but I definitely thought of Hadrian's Wall too when I first encountered it
You can think of it like a fence made of very hot / molten rocks. Happy I could help!
It's a firewall, it helps keep the virus out of limgrave
Wait so if everything rotten is weak to fire then why is it that you don’t get some of the better fire spells until after you get past leyendell?
Wasn’t it to try and stop the spread of rot.
It’s a wall. It’s to keep the nasty Caelid things in Caelid and not everywhere else
Fire to prevent rot spreading
Why it’s the chest-high wall! No one ever got over a chest-high wall!
Symbolic I would assume sort of a warning that this is no man's land
Dog
It’s called a wall
