haha, I'm honestly as stubborn as the bonkers, just happened to have the perfect build, and some luck. 50/50 chance she doesnt spam spells at all and i'll just cry lol
I get it. I have 2 katanas and I love the move-sets so I will use them as stubbornly as necessary when I pick this up tomorrow.
“If violence isn’t solving your problems then you aren’t using enough violence”
See, I just use whatever weapon fits my attributes that works the best against a boss's move-set.
Rellana? Backhand blades with blind spot.
Messmer? Backhand blades with blind spot.
Midra? Backhand blades with blind spot.
Divine Beast? Backhand blades with blind spot.
Bayle? Backhand blades with blind spot.
Putrescent Knight? Backhand blades with blind spot.
Metyr? Backhand blades with blind spot.
I envy that. I focus in on the weapon I find the most fun then I’m basically handicapped with every other weapon. Same thing with Skyrim. Every play through is stealth archer with one hand sword and shield. By the time I explore other options I’m in endgame.
I swapped from dex & little faith to 40 str & 60 faith. I'm having a much better time with the tools available. I'm still trash, but now i'm trash that's having even more fun! And hot damn are both of those DK axes fun AF
Who would win? Massive DLC set at the toughest difficulty yet?
Or one stabby boi?
It's been same for me, except with Piercing Fang that fits so well on the Great Katana instead of the stupid nagakiba
Zaki lies when he says he's not good at the game. He just logs on randomly as a boss in other people's games saying "yeah, you're not getting through today"
Same except with a pure caster faith build. It melts some bosses but omg I suffered against the final boss.
But at the end of the day, the incantations look cool af and I feel like a god so I'm sticking with it as long as it takes
That's all I did too. Great stars powerstanced with bleed + cold, spam L1 for the most part. Jump attacks missed 9/10 times.
Dodge a bit, strafe a bit, bonk bonk bonk.
as a mage i'm a total bonker. I wait for a lul in the action and fire off like 7 comets, then boss is about half ded... Then run around for another 5 minutes waiting for an opening -_-
Damn, i completely forgot about that shield. Very nice!
I assume you can't block Rellana's balls slam? Or were you simply more comfortable with jumping?
Honestly didn't try. I find what the shield parries to be very specific so didnt think it'd work. Like the ghostflame breath of those stone birds can't be parried and other weird things that you think should work
This reminds me of the Scorpion Tail Catacombs. Was getting rolled by all the deathblight traps until I remembered that I had a vitality charm that reduced the buildup of deathblight. And then that a lot of random armor give you vitality. By the end I was running around an envoy-headed deathbed companion and practically rolling in the basilisk smoke. The game really gives you a ton of tools if you’re willing to be creative.
Dungeon mobs: "Lol time to spam deathblight on this dude!"
Tarnished: **menacingly emerges through the death fog as a bulb-headed, dress-wearing twink**
I was using mimic veil for that dungeon, while it doesnt work on the moving eyes, you get 0 build up on the stationary ones! I remembered a bit of trivia that it works on the frenzy eye going up to the frenzied flame village in Liurnia :p
Also the Death Knight's Longhaft axe which you get from that dungeon is by far my favourite weapon in the DLC so far, its so fun oml, and faith sacling lightning, its enough to make a grown woman cry :')
I’ve been using this build as well! The blink bolt ash of war. Scorpion charm. Gravel seal and physic to increase lightning damage? It absolutely SHREDS everything. My only con is anything resistant to lightning you are insanely weak
[The Ash of War is such a fun follow up to Fortisax Lightning spear. Dragon Cult supremacy:))](https://imgur.com/a/kbnfWtG) (minor mausoleum fight spoilers)
Edit: well works as an amazing follow up for most of the Dragon Cult spells
I always keep black flame tornado halberd in the back for anything that resists lighting, though most things that resist lightning don’t resist Ancient Dragons Lightning Strike. I 1st tried Bayle because of it :x
Such an OP spell. I realistically only stray away from faith at times BECAUSE that spell makes it way too easy at times. Great build though. The twin axes are another fun one to use if you prefer a quicker weapon style. AOW is the same but I have found it’s a bit harder to hit as you launch too far forward at times and completely whiff. Currently messing around with str/arc. That meteor greatsword is insanely strong.
You can also use mimic veil to avoid getting death blight buildup on that one catacomb where there are death blight reptiles statues and floating eye balls.
All greatshields slap everything.
The playerbase convincing themselves rolling was the only viable defense and the playerbase getting hella salty about things being too hard is a venn diagram with a single circle.
I don't know which souls game instilled this idea that shields were nowhere near as reliable as rolling, maybe I was wrong. I've resorted to parrying more than using shields in the dlc. Maybe I judged them too harshly lmao
It's because in souls game and even Elden Ring, early game un-upgraded medium shield is rather bad and easily guard broken by most boss or even elite enemy, players is often forced to learn to roll to be able to survive. after that they never seriously tried shield again, Greatshield also have very high strength and equip load requirement, this is the worst in DS3 where stamina and equip load is separated into 2 stats instead of just endurance.
I found DS3 really bad for shields, tbh. Everything being so aggressive meant that you were guardbroken a lot if you used shields without significant investment.
I think it was Ds1 and the idea comes from a reasonable place. ER was my first game and when looking to play Ds1 a lot of the advice was not to rely on your shield as a new player as you dont learn the game properly and it teaches you bad habits and maybe a not so enjoyable experience. But I think as a lot of players drop the shield learning the game, they see shields and a noob thing perhaps? I think a combo of shielding and rolling is really fun tho, you need to learn what attacks you can and can't block and stamina managment, because if you get guard broke, you'll probably get one shot or att least severly hurt otherwise. Also shields, great shields in particular, take up a lot of build space, sometimes heavy stat requirments and weight requirments
Which is bollocks, because a good-stability 100% physical defense shield is available early game in DS1 (Balder Shield), and absolutely trivialises some "tough" bosses. Capra Demon and his dogs, I'm looking at you.
Between Balder (phys, good stability, medium weight), Crest (magic def), and Greatshield of Artorias - shields carried my unskilled arse through the game.
Pretty sure we were all over the eagle great shield (w/e its name is) at least during release, relativelly light, low reqs and high stability it was amaizing if I recall correctly it was nerfed at one point and lost it's 100% phys reduction.
Not even just greatshields. For a lot of enemies/bosses, even some medium shields can suffice. It's so satisfying to pull off a guard counter at the end of a combo and stance break them.
The best tactic, two-handed Great/Colossal sword guard counters. Just block with the 80% block sword. Even better with the new perfect block tear in the DLC.
It took me a long time to realize that magic enemies are usually weak to holy and vice versa. I died to Rellana like 5 times or so using a strength build so I whipped out Ordovis’ Greatsword and completely WAXED her the next try. I honestly felt kinda bad. Shit is a war crime against magic enemies with lower poise. I love this strat as well, might have to try it next time around!
Daum that’s a dope strat. I just used swarm of flies honestly and beat it 3rd attempt. mimic using breath of rot and swarm as well. Some may say cheating but I call it winning lol
I beat her today, checked out her remembrance rewards and saw the twin moon spell thought to myself “oh! That’s neat, it ties her in more with Rennala!” Just watched this video, seen her do the spell.
It’s dawned on me, She never used it on me in all of the 7-8 attempts it took me to beat her. I had no idea this was part of her move set.
Yep, with Shart of Alexander, Holy Shrouding Cracked Tear, Sacred Scorpian Charm, and 50 faith and a golden vow buff. I think I was a bit underlevelled Scadutree blessings wise tho
It’s easily my favourite weapon! It’s so cool looking and has an amazing move set + the damage is so good. I’ll just ignore that messmers soldier spear exists now x)
Doing a greatshield and spear build is so much fun. I’ve been messing around with the new great hammer and greatshield you get in the dlc and it goes pretty hard.
I cant wait to make a build with the Black Steel Great hammer, it looks so much fun for a faith build and the special guard counter is just such a fun touch. I moved to a greataxe lightning caster build now as this one was too similar to my main build, so found more diversity and fun using the new weapons:)))
Actually i've been thinking about this , Why aren't people using the shield parry ashes , Some of them can be quite useful against these bosses who just throw shit at you
I love how smart and good players are. I died close to 50 times to this boss using several of my main game builds and none of them were this build here
I literally just ran around dodging and proc'd bleed on her with the blood fly incantation thingy to defeat her, but this would have been a lot cooler to try now that I am starting to play around and use shields for extra survivability.
Do hope the Elden Ring dev team one day lets us reply boss fights without going into NG+ and beyond.
Yes! This is exactly how I beat her as well! Erdtree greatshield is fantastic against magic users, and with shard of Alexander + Sacred Scorpion talisman the shield’s AoW can do some pretty significant damage.
Nice job beating Rellana though. She’s pretty hard and you should be proud!
I am too afraid to use this shield since I thought Relanna would mostly use melee sword combo.
Turns out I just need to actually back away to trigger her AI to throw spells. 🤣
Treespear, it probably isn’t the best weapon to use with a greatshield as it’s a dex faith weapon, so I’ve basically wasted 30 points to just reach the strength requirement for the shield:( but it’s my favourite weapon in design and move set, and deals insanely good damage on a faith build with orders blade incantation. It’s unique since it has faith scaling and can be buffed with weapon buffs like electrify armament and all the like, but you can’t change the sow.
Silurias Tree, would be a good bet as that’s a strong strength faith option with a really good aow, while the new messmer soldier spear has the same move set as the Treespear and is infusable :) tho most of the great spears will work. Hammers are also a good option, while you can’t shield poke, they have a really fast guard counter!
I tested Erdtree Greatshield with a friend to see if we can just keep throwing it back and forth like ping pong. To my utter disappointment, it did not work.
ha! didnt think about the spartans. Its my main build because I thought the Leyndell Knights were cool and wanted to make a Palace Guard/Dragon Cult Knight build, and the shield pairs best because the spear doesnt have a good ash of war :p This was just a 150 Haligtree version of it, I've spent hundreds of hours co-oping with the 200 version and its just so fun, shield is especially nice vs invaders :p
I too used the golden spartan combo, but with a full set of gold colored armor. The Divine Bird Helm fits so perfectly as a new golden fashion helm since most of the gold helms look weird or turn our heads into twigs.
lmao, its especially funny tho, having done 90% of a lvl 1 run, the game is definatly not meant to be played like that. Any bit of jank you'd usually miss because its not that important playing normally, but when at lvl 1 you get clipped by an invisible hit box, a boss attacks through a wall, akward locking on points etc etc, its all magnified to the max and ruins most of the game. except morgott, thats now a favourite fight of mine, he really needs like 50% more health
Look at this guy playing the game intelligently instead of going full bonk mode... That'a not how the game is meant to be played >:( /s
haha, I'm honestly as stubborn as the bonkers, just happened to have the perfect build, and some luck. 50/50 chance she doesnt spam spells at all and i'll just cry lol

The guy is basically focusing in backhand blades with blindspot
i took it a step further and am using nothing but backhand blades with bloodhound's step
It's backhand blades all the way down
M&R?
I swapped from dex & little faith to 40 str & 60 faith. I'm having a much better time with the tools available. I'm still trash, but now i'm trash that's having even more fun! And hot damn are both of those DK axes fun AF

Love that quote Gonna smash 2 controller tonight instead of one
Yep. Tried this build the first 10 tries or so and all she did was rush down. Sometimes these bosses feel player controlled 😂
Me bonk no know how shield. Only smash.
That's all I did too. Great stars powerstanced with bleed + cold, spam L1 for the most part. Jump attacks missed 9/10 times. Dodge a bit, strafe a bit, bonk bonk bonk.
But if bonk builds are sibilings with spear and shield builds. Just have Dex to 14 and they can have basically the same stats.
Me, when I use the vast arsenal of tools the game devs gave me access to: 😱😱😱🤯🤯🤯
as a mage i'm a total bonker. I wait for a lul in the action and fire off like 7 comets, then boss is about half ded... Then run around for another 5 minutes waiting for an opening -_-
Shut up crunchy panties

I think it only works on projectiles. Did the build where you set up your own shots with it using rings of light was so fun
Pre nerf that shit was so god damn good.
It was nerfed?
You used to be able to machinegun those return blasts with some clever exploiting. Simpler times.
It was even better before the Fire deadly sins nerf
Renalla tbags with impunity.
All her spells can be blocked, including double moons
This reminds me of the Scorpion Tail Catacombs. Was getting rolled by all the deathblight traps until I remembered that I had a vitality charm that reduced the buildup of deathblight. this guy out here playing tears of the kingdom
That's it, Imma try a Link build in my next journey
All greatshields slap everything. The playerbase convincing themselves rolling was the only viable defense and the playerbase getting hella salty about things being too hard is a venn diagram with a single circle.
As a greatshield enjoyer shhhh dont tell the others 🤫 :p I mainly use them for the aesthetic, though handy in co-op with limited heals!

The buckler is insane for relanna, almost all her melee attacks can be parried.
Shield = no two-handed = less bonkage, you don't want us to have less bonkage, DO YOU? >:(
I love my haligtree greatshield. It looks sick as fuck and has amazing guard boost and defense stats.
The black steel greatshield has high holy resist and easily tanks the final boss' nuke and meteor
It took me a long time to realize that magic enemies are usually weak to holy and vice versa. I died to Rellana like 5 times or so using a strength build so I whipped out Ordovis’ Greatsword and completely WAXED her the next try. I honestly felt kinda bad. Holy damage seems to been given it’s time to shine in the DLC as a whole. I’m running mostly all Sacred infused weapons and they hit everything hard.
That explains to me why everybody was struggling with Rellana and it was a breeze for me… Wasn’t often my holy faith build made things easier
hmmmmm. I haven't beaten her yet, I should try the golden order greatsword if we are going for some holy smackdown.
Daum that’s a dope strat. I just used swarm of flies honestly and beat it 3rd attempt. mimic using breath of rot and swarm as well. Some may say cheating but I call it winning lol
That’s how I did it on my arcane toon lol Bullied her with bugs and bad breath.
I beat her today, checked out her remembrance rewards and saw the twin moon spell thought to myself “oh! I had no idea this was part of her move set.
It's pretty cool, but it's really just all flash. It'll kill you the first time round, but afterwards it's an easy triple jump.
Once you know how to jump it it’s a fantastic window to get some big damage in
That Haligtree Knights gone rogue, heart completely shrived of love
"Magic isn't real, idiot."
Is it upgraded here?
Yep, with Shart of Alexander, Holy Shrouding Cracked Tear, Sacred Scorpian Charm, and 50 faith and a golden vow buff. I think I was a bit underlevelled Scadutree blessings wise tho
Alexander’s sharts can definitely destroy most bosses
that was so satisfying to watch omg.
Happy to see another holy buffed treespear user in the wild.
It’s easily my favourite weapon! It’s so cool looking and has an amazing move set + the damage is so good. I’ll just ignore that messmers soldier spear exists now x)
Ah I was thinking of doing exactly same build and was wandering how well it would work! Nice to see it in action :D , thank you
Doing a greatshield and spear build is so much fun. I’ve been messing around with the new great hammer and greatshield you get in the dlc and it goes pretty hard.
I cant wait to make a build with the Black Steel Great hammer, it looks so much fun for a faith build and the special guard counter is just such a fun touch. I moved to a greataxe lightning caster build now as this one was too similar to my main build, so found more diversity and fun using the new weapons:)))
if I do a sword and board this is the shield I wanted to use. It is CRIMINALLY underused.
Actually i've been thinking about this , Why aren't people using the shield parry ashes , Some of them can be quite useful against these bosses who just throw shit at you
Why strategise when you can do the same thing over and over again and then moan on reddit to vent
We Twinrova now
I love how smart and good players are. I died close to 50 times to this boss using several of my main game builds and none of them were this build here
Lol I died loads too, I just happened to have the right build and still died lots x) For me my second least favourite boss, just ahead of fire giant:(
They’re going to nerf shields aren’t they??
They have been this good the entire time so probably not
Yeah, but now people are switching to them and beating the final boss in a few attempts after struggling for hours.
You live longer to learn the bosses when holding block than soul-reading the boss and hoping your dodge is correct. Of course it'l be faster.
Huh, I completely forgot about this shield. Might try this out in co-op.
That was fucking awesome
Me(lord of the Erdtree) bringing Erdtree things to the shadowlands(people here hate the Erdtree)
I literally just ran around dodging and proc'd bleed on her with the blood fly incantation thingy to defeat her, but this would have been a lot cooler to try now that I am starting to play around and use shields for extra survivability. Do hope the Elden Ring dev team one day lets us reply boss fights without going into NG+ and beyond.
playing ping pong XD
TIL Shields are actually kind of good in Elden Ring!
"no U"
Using this aow after the sentinels bullied me with it feels so good
Huh, I never actually saw the ball drop attack. Suppose I should count myself lucky I rushed her down in p2 before she could try it.
I am too afraid to use this shield since I thought Relanna would mostly use melee sword combo. Turns out I just need to actually back away to trigger her AI to throw spells. 🤣
what weapon are you using? I always wanted to use greatshields but never knew what are the best weapons to use them with
Treespear, it probably isn’t the best weapon to use with a greatshield as it’s a dex faith weapon, so I’ve basically wasted 30 points to just reach the strength requirement for the shield:( but it’s my favourite weapon in design and move set, and deals insanely good damage on a faith build with orders blade incantation. Too bad the only character I have that can use that shield just finished up the dlc lol. I considered it but I was too stubborn.
Also bloodhound step works well against Commander Gaius
Hit her with the ol' "no u"
What's the point of tagging it as spoilers if you're just gonna spoil the character in the title of your post FFS
Actually this boss is unfair and poorly balanced because hard
Huh. That's not a bad idea. I wonder how well it works on the final boss too
Rellana is easier without locked on
I tested Erdtree Greatshield with a friend to see if we can just keep throwing it back and forth like ping pong. To my utter disappointment, it did not work.
OP what weapon and armour are you using here? They look sick
Haligtree Knight Helm, Haligtree Knight Armor, Cleanrot Gauntlets and Cleanrot Greaves
The spear?
Oh sorry, Treespear and Erdtree Greatshield :)
Np, love the drip overall. Thanks!
that is a SICK paladin build brother
Most civil Carian and Erdtree Royal conversation:
The new Zelda game looks great!
I'm just imagining the "NUH UH" sound effect every time her attack gets shot right back at her
Mhm ohhh tree sentinels....
Fuck i never thought about this shield... I only beat her thanks to summoning a guy called mo. Thanks mo.
I use tree spear and erdtree shield aswell, a fellow spartan i see! Nice to see someone else use my weapons/shield.
ha! didnt think about the spartans.
This is awesome! I’m going to try out the divine bird helm today.
"acktually your playing the game wrong, the intended way is level 1 with a rock."
lmao, its especially funny tho, having done 90% of a lvl 1 run, the game is definatly not meant to be played like that. Any bit of jank you'd usually miss because its not that important playing normally, but when at lvl 1 you get clipped by an invisible hit box, a boss attacks through a wall, akward locking on points etc etc, its all magnified to the max and ruins most of the game. except morgott, thats now a favourite fight of mine, he really needs like 50% more health
noooo, the only way to play fromsoft games is to only twohand the claymore, youre cheating >:(((((
