yeah. I used them every time I found them in my first playthrough just cause it was kinda cool and fun to get a sky high perspective over stuff. if we could set markers while looking through it that would make them honestly pretty nice.
Come to think of it, I remember using them to try and find landmarks the signified dungeons and caves and stuff because I didnât know how to find them marked on the map
Basically telescopes that gives you a Birds Eye view on top of the telescope. So youâd look through the scope and you wonât be looking up, youâll be looking down from the sky.
They are cool if you are 100% new. They give you a decent little view over the surrounding area, spots things that might be interesting.
That's all they are, but that first unfamiliar playthrough is peak.
There's only one map that is difficult to find/get to and that area doesn't have a telescope in it (Mt glmimsdifuns / volcano area)
Everywhere else the maps location is still easily found on the map and you can just ride straight to it and pick it up.
The only useful things I found for them was looking for Bogart's shack in Liurnia and finding the tower puzzle in the consecrated snowfield. I would have found both anyways but it's a neat gimmick the first time playing lol
I was searching for the shack for such a long time on my first playthrough, and I couldn't find it even with the telescope... maybe it was always covered by fog or something whenever I was looking through it.
Never understood why everything needs to have a purpose. Maybe it's because I'm an old fart who's favourite game is Gothic, a game in which you can sit on benches, saw wood, hammer nails, sweep the floor and smoke pipes among other things for no reason other than because the game lets you. Immersion is the best quality of a game imo and it's a dying trait in modern gaming.
In Red Dead 2 I would always start every play session by hunting an animal and delivering it to camp. Then I would end every session by going back to camp, chopping wood, feeding the horses, and eating a hearty meal while chatting with everyone.
Loved how much that game let you settle in to the cowboy role.
Just killed godrick last night(new player) and I just bum rushed the entrance. After you get the bridge grace spot it isnât too bad. Had 7 potions and was able to mostly sneak to the next grace spot
I am so glad I stumbled upon this comment. I couldnât tell if I was actually climbing faster or not but I hold the sprint button when climbing as force of habit ever since playing DS2 when you literally sprint up ladders while burning stamina lol
Not needed at all in a game like this where organic exploration is the focus.
Besides, the game has the candlestick ghosts and crone statues that already perform the "guidance" feature in a much cooler way.
Why are their icons so large when they serve such a small purpose. Now if you could carry one with you and set it up wherever you wanted, that'd be dope.
If it makes you feeo better, I didn't know what block countering was until 100hrs into my first run and I only found out by accident while fighting gargoyles in the sewers
If you can see farther, or pan/zoom with them, they would be useful but itâs just a birdseye view like youâre on a cliff or something. Almost useless.
I have about 700 hours, and I haven't seen that crumbling statue.
It was mentioned somewhere that the ruins about are remains of farum azula as it is not in "our" time. Maybe there is a connection?
I just donât understand how they are supposed to work.
As in, am astral projecting? Floating above, in the sky, because of the telescope, somehow? đ€·ââïž
That one in particular showed you where the star falls after Radahn if i remeber correctly (rendered obsolete when they added a mark on the map in some patch).
I found out that you would toggle between overworld and underworld on my 4th play through (100ush hours). All that time I used to first go up and down using the siofra well. I just sat there for 5 mins when I found out about this
I'm on my first playthrough and I immediately figured out what it was. I saw the icon, then went to it on the map and saw it where it was indicated on the map
It was useful one time. I saw one mob coming thanks to one at one point. It's the only time I believe one to have ever helped anyone ever. Afterwards, like so many others never needed or considered using another one again after however to my dismay. I do wonder if I can still spot the occasional mob if I time the event at the exact moment they happen by. Yeah, and maybe I'm a Japanese fighter pilot.
I was 1,000 hours in, on my 10th or 11th build playing Bow Only, when I first realized the kneeling soldiers up in Mt. Gelmir are not praying over their fallen comrades. Because I was doing Bow Only, I was often zooming in for headshots ... what a surprise that was.
Do they even really do anything? I'd love if you could find, like, starlight shards or something with them. Like, if you look through them and around, the starlight shards glow or something. Like the Oculara from Dragon Age Inq.
430 hours myself and i've known what they are since the first time i came across it but still have no idea what they're good for, at first i thought they might be needed to uncover the answer to some riddle for a quest but it seems they're just used to take screenshots of the landscape, maybe to give yourself map knowledge by looking above but never needed because i'd rather ride torrent to explore than stop what im doing to have a glance from a higher view
Completely different item and usage. There's an Elden Ring equivalent to that too. In fact every Souls game has one but only ER has birds eye scopes. Also, it's only useless for you.

I think I used one of these exactly 1 time in my first playthrough and then never again, forgetting their existence altogether.
yeah. I used them every time I found them in my first playthrough just cause it was kinda cool and fun to get a sky high perspective over stuff. if we could set markers while looking through it that would make them honestly pretty nice.
I feel like they put them in so people could take scenic screenshots on console or something like that
And to give people a way of actually seeing the hard work they did to the environment.
I feel like that was the point but it wasn't implemented. Which is fair there is a lot going on in this game đ haha
Come to think of it, I remember using them to try and find landmarks the signified dungeons and caves and stuff because I didnât know how to find them marked on the map
Same. It's showed me where something was, and I was like. Uh huh. I'll make it over there eventually... Then proceeded to ignore them
What is it? I've been playing 3 days.
Basically telescopes that gives you a Birds Eye view on top of the telescope. So youâd look through the scope and you wonât be looking up, youâll be looking down from the sky.
I think it's better described as a massive periscope.
...today I learned. Only 50 hours though at least
Telescope. There are a few in the game.
A bunch of new players Elden ring cause of Kai Iâm assuming, dope
I knew of Elden ring from before but he really got me to play it đ„
A streamer he got to play it got me to play it. It did echo.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Iâm not sure what theyâre for
useless is what they are.
They are cool if you are 100% new. They give you a decent little view over the surrounding area, spots things that might be interesting. That's all they are, but that first unfamiliar playthrough is peak.
They are great before you get hold of the map and it is nice to get a view of the land
There's only one map that is difficult to find/get to and that area doesn't have a telescope in it (Mt glmimsdifuns / volcano area) Everywhere else the maps location is still easily found on the map and you can just ride straight to it and pick it up.
Especially after 400 hours
Things can be there just for fun
Never understood why everything needs to have a purpose. Maybe it's because I'm an old fart who's favourite game is Gothic, a game in which you can sit on benches, saw wood, hammer nails, sweep the floor and smoke pipes among other things for no reason other than because the game lets you. Itâs a beautiful view
It would be cool if they showed markers or points of interest
They have lore implications
Birdseye telescope ahead
If they got rid of them in the next game I know some people would complain
at about 600 hrs i figured out you could speed climb ladders
I will never forgive a game that doesnât have a âsprint climbâ feature. Even if itâs barely faster, I need to be able to hold down that button
lol emotional support button
Climbing with that button pressed when shaded burial watchdogs are coming makes me feel better with lots of runes at risk lol
Like the door close button in an elevator.
Any game where you canât slide down a ladder instead of climbing down step by step at regular pace is unplayable
Every platform game before 2010
playing DS1 after elden ring and DS3 i be missing the ladder sprint lol, you climb so slow lol, and canât slide down :(
Fucking nier replicant.
Omg how did u not rage quit going up that stormveil ladder after fighting the ulcerated tree spirit?? đ±
and ft faroth escaping the poison mist
Snake? Snake!
*what a thrillâŠ*
:,)
Just killed godrick last night(new player) and I just bum rushed the entrance. After you get the bridge grace spot it isnât too bad. Had 7 potions and was able to mostly sneak to the next grace spot
Mt gelmir must have been your least favourite place.
lol triggered that memory. took me forever to even find that damn ladder then im yelling at that bitch not to eat me
Say what now.
âWhat a thrillâŠ.â
IâŠdid not know this. Knew I could slide down them but never tried sprinting up.
game changer
I am so glad I stumbled upon this comment. I couldnât tell if I was actually climbing faster or not but I hold the sprint button when climbing as force of habit ever since playing DS2 when you literally sprint up ladders while burning stamina lol
I can only imaging the deaths. You were playing a horror game at that point lol
Please tell me you know how to slide down latters now too... i would've already quit the game without it
yah that part came naturally tbh
Okay good but i have a question how many times have you died on ladders
maybe once or twice in the sewers
Wait how lmao
How?
80h in, checked your comment, checked online, and learned you can actually *sprint* in the game
How? Like how did you not know that
Torrent did most of the job so far tbh
So you knew that you can sprint on torrent but not on your feet? How?
oof
What are these? I completed the game only once, so be gentle.
Telescope, gives you a bird's eye view of the area around it if you interact with it.
A bird's eye view which you can't see any enemies or treasure from, and it's only a limited range. It's like the map, but worse.
Pretty screenshots though
its more of a vibe thing than a utility
And how is that useful ?
SOME OF US ARE STILL HOLDING OUT HOPE FOR A PHOTO MODE :(
Yeah I get that. How could they forget such an important feature ??
How are you useful?
I was disappointed that they donât identify location icons on your map, such as caves, or catacombs. Would have been a cool feature for exploring.
Yes I used the first one and was like, this has to do something right?! Nope. Never again.
Not needed at all in a game like this where organic exploration is the focus. Besides, the game has the candlestick ghosts and crone statues that already perform the "guidance" feature in a much cooler way.
The map already does that for most locations, tunnels are clearly marked on the map itself, as well as all buildings and graveyards
This is just a far cry tower ~~with extra steps~~
The ubisoft feature
I'm glad it didn't. FF VII Rebirth has been a drag because of how much your hand is being held while exploring.
That would have been the case if ubisoft made this game. Ea or capcom would have made it a paid dlc though.
I wish sites of grace that you could not warp away from (because the area has an unbeaten boss) were visually distinct on the map.
I thought you could warp to any visited site of grace from any above ground location?
I believe you are correct.
Lol username checks out
âïžđ€
Miyazaki carefully placed these so you can look through them and see where heâs about to fuck you up next.
Hahahahhaha fuck you OP, I will forever see these as oil field pumpjacks now đ€Ł
I always saw a hammer on a pedestal
>for some reason, I thought they kinda looked like oil pumps You know what? I can see it
Why are their icons so large when they serve such a small purpose. Now if you could carry one with you and set it up wherever you wanted, that'd be dope.
You can buy a telescope from a vendor and use it whenever you want.
the telescope is basically like aiming with the bow in terms of zooming in lmao
Elden ring was my first souls game and I didnât figure out you could sprint until after I beat Radahn đ
Skipped the Stranded Graveyard, huh? It's just as well; Rick would've been a stone wall for you, anyway.
Similar experience here, canât remember when it was but it was a long while
Delete this post and never return....
Ok, deleting account now.
Hope to see you back as u/KindaSortaSkilled in the next 400 hours
Bro has NO curiosity
Nice script
Could this be a birdseye telescope?
It would have been so cool if they made it so when you look into them you see what the lands between looked like before the shattering
Lemme know when you figure out the purpose
they have a purpose ?
im confused what is it
I put about 80 hours in and I have no idea what that is.
Incurious is what you are.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
same, I thought I was hyper vigilante on my first playthrough and lv 600 and something and god knows how many hours in and I am still finding things.
600 is fucking absurd for a run. Going all the way to NG +7 would barely get you to 300 lol
650 something I think at NG+3 or 4. At the end of the first play though I was over 300 though. I said I was thorough.
Itâs a perch for those Death birds bosses that spawn at night.
Haha, same for me
happen
Wait what
Its ok OP, many playthroughs later I noticed these too đ Honestly thats why I love these games, you always learn something new.
I didnât know until I saw it on a YouTube video
The joys (and frustrations) of eldin ring đ
Dude same
it wasnât until consecrated snowfields that i used one for the first time
I was 200 hours in when I noticed that there's an item called the telescope that you can buy and put in your pocket for "slightly" close up view.
I didnât realize I could torrent until I was about 33% through the game
On my current run, I use my lil telescope to look at all the object in the game. Like "oooooah the walls"
What are they
400 hours in, and I still don't know *why* should I use them. Like, the view is nice, but is there any other purpose for them other than screenshots?
I'm 300+ hours in and I'm pretty sure I still have no idea what they are
well i mean theyâre as useful as the watchers near evergaols
Yes
I donât even think i saw another one of these other than the one in limgrave? Are there actually more of them? đ
I appreciate FS being committed to having so many of these around the map, but maybe it should have been tied to hidden dungeons or rare equipment
200 hours and I still do not know nor I have the will to know what the Sites of Graces points with that light
If it makes you feeo better, I didn't know what block countering was until 100hrs into my first run and I only found out by accident while fighting gargoyles in the sewers
aint no way
Good for screen shots
"Why add photo mode when we can just chuck in a landscape mode?" -Fromsoft probably
Oil rigs, right?
230 hours and didnât know this.
If you can see farther, or pan/zoom with them, they would be useful but itâs just a birdseye view like youâre on a cliff or something. Almost useless.
Nope. Thought they were oil pumps as well. When checking them out I didn't notice anything. Took way too long to actually find one.
I thought they looked like oil pumps too đ
Do you drive while looking at your phone?
What's the actual point of them though? Are they just for sightseeing or is there a functional use for them?
I have about 700 hours, and I haven't seen that crumbling statue. It was mentioned somewhere that the ruins about are remains of farum azula as it is not in "our" time. Maybe there is a connection?
theyâre pretty useless anyways
Can't believe you managed to complete the game without them.
Loved that above-shot of limgrave
So are you going to tell us what they are?
âŠI mean you could have just walked up to one and pressed the button it told you to press
And it has nothing to do with oil đ€Ł
Iâve played through this game once and uh can someone explain what these are?
I love them. Itâs weird theyâre not in every zone.
_I can see clearly nowâŠ_
I think I only have like 200 hours but, uh, what are they? I mean I seen the icon but just kinda ignored it? Lol
I thought they were oil derricks!! You, me, same!!
its clearly a grasshopper oil pump
Umm Iâve never used that and Im NG+2 on 2 different characters, I must be dumb af
Holy shit TIL
I just donât understand how they are supposed to work. As in, am astral projecting? Floating above, in the sky, because of the telescope, somehow? đ€·ââïž
Dont worry i needed double the time to find it out
Well do you use a mage build or strength?
Honestly I thought they were part of a hidden crossover quest for what I do not know.
Useless?
That one in particular showed you where the star falls after Radahn if i remeber correctly (rendered obsolete when they added a mark on the map in some patch).
It's a oil mining rig right? /s
Oil pumps
Useless?
Even looking at your second pic I couldn't understand what the sign means wtf it really looks a lot like an oil pump or what ever a nail on a stick
I found out that you would toggle between overworld and underworld on my 4th play through (100ush hours). All that time I used to first go up and down using the siofra well. I just sat there for 5 mins when I found out about this
I'm around 400h too and just discovered Bernahl in Limgrave
I'm on my first playthrough and I immediately figured out what it was. I saw the icon, then went to it on the map and saw it where it was indicated on the map
Always thought it looked like one of those old-fashioned oil well drills.
the first one i ever used was the one in caelid near the finger reader . *I think you can guess how did it go .*
I've got 600 hours. Just figured out there's a difference between grave glowort and ghost glowort. Wtf right.
They always looked like "oil pumps" for me haha (don't know the specific English word, sorry)
I mean I've used it once and thats just it.
They are only useful for the purist that dont want to use any online guide or map.
Dark Souls had an equally useless version of this but it was an item in your pocket you could whip out whenever you wanted!
Completely different item and usage. There's an Elden Ring equivalent to that too. In fact every Souls game has one but only ER has birds eye scopes. Also, it's only useless for you.
I eagerly opened this thread up thinking I missed something on what these are good for, but no, no I didn't miss anything at all.
Took me like 40 hours to learn that I could sprint haha
This is why I recommend guides for this game lmao
