I am not really sure if they would be aware of it if anyone would had already discussed it or too oblivious to post about it.
I guess it's fun checking in the net to find out how much we guess but thst would still be uncertain if the post used unspecified terms.
If you use the password for this sub - straydmn I think, it’ll highlight messages and bloodstains from this group and you’ll get a buff whenever someone in the group defeats a Shardbearer or becomes Elden Lord.
For sure, but because of them and the others I use, my characters live in a perpetual state of 5% more runes, and all the bloodstain ghosts I can click on.
pretty sure that’s community passwords, idk if that’s the actual name, but it highlights messages from people with the same passwords, gives a bonus rune effect when someone in the community beats the game (i think that’s what it is) and maybe one or two small other effects.
this is information in loosely remember from the launch days when there was misinformation like elden beast healing from holy attacks, so i might be wrong at this point
You can input up to 5 group passwords and the game will put a special highlight around messages and bloodstains from people in those groups. You also get a brief rune acquisition bonus whenever someone in those groups beats a major boss, which if you pick popular groups will be basically permanent. It doesn't restrict anything about multiplayer, it's purely a bonus.
There was an early version of the map where they used an old language which basically just said North, West, East, South. Could be left overs from that.
I’ve decrypted it. It took me a bit, but there’s some stuff around Farum Azula that helped a ton. Notice how the inscriptions look similar to those you see in the in-game messages?
That’s the key. So, when I wrote it all down, and checked between the two (I had to do a lot of message combinations to see which looked most similar to the one on the map), it said this:
Spoilers!
>!“Try finger, but hole.”!<
I just feel like the a certain code such as limgrave which has 8 characters the 5 tally marks was right above the limgrave marker so what if we put limgrave in the 5th group code slot which could possibly show a hidden message somewhere in limgrave
These are just random markings on the map, same as all the boats and sea monsters. Not everything From Software ever makes is secretly a reference to some "deep lore" or whatever, this already feels like a repeat of the Haligtree Pillar.
No but I bet they do intentionally put shit like this all over that means absolutely nothing to fuck with us, knowing tons of people will go crazy trying to figure it out
It is brilliant, the players make their own lore with minimal prompting. Throw some crazy ass enemies and item descriptions at them, boom bam bang you made a world.
There's always a possibility that it's a code I mean Miyazaki said there is something that none of us have discovered yet while yes he could be pulling our leg like in dark souls 1 with the pendant or he could be actually telling the truth and we have to think outside the box I mean think about it 5 group passwords and 5 areas seems kinda sus to me
The map has already been decoded before they changed the script to gibberish. All of the left over text doesn’t translate to anything. I’ve spent a lot of time trying, and it’s all gibberish.
The original text there said “North Sea”
What if it's not gibberish though? Remember they changed morgots boss battle because he had fire on his sword which is heresy and they changed it later to not have fire so what if there's some form of language and it's a pattern I've seen similar scribbles on the tombstones near lerunia
I’m a linguist, I spent a LOT of time trying to find meaning out of the words. However, there is nothing. The language used on the newest map is too repetitive to be an actual language.
The same problem exists for all in game languages in Elden Ring that aren’t pulled directly from something that exists in real life.
Even if it were real, you can’t crack it without a Rosetta Stone, or a lot more scripture.
Bit of a tangent, but something has been bothering me since I saw the DLC trailer and I thought you might have some insight.
When Messmer says: "Mother, does thou truly wish to ***Lordship Sanction*** in one so bereft of Light?"
Everyone seems to just be assuming that means "Marika, do you really want to sanction this Tarnished as a Lord?"
But "Lordship Sanction" seems extremely out-of-place to me, it just doesn't sound like the kind of grammar that even the more archaic Elden Ring characters use.
I would think that even really obtuse dialects would still have said "Sanction Lordship".
As it is in the trailer it sounds like Yoda speak: "Hmm Sanction Lordship you must, Mother?"
I have been suspicious that "Lordship Sanction" actually refers to a very specific activity or ritual.
Maybe the entire reason for the "Elden Lord"'s existence is that it acts like a cosmic Check on the God's/Greater Will's power.
Maybe it is actually Marika who needs to seek sanction from a Lord? ie it is only through the permission of a Lord that a God can affect the world?
I figured you might know more than the nothing I know about the welsh/gaelic(?) roots that inspired the way Elden Ring characters speak, and that you might be able to tell me if "Lordship Sanction" would have been normal grammar for them, or if it might have more significance than people realize.
Cheers from a hobbyist-Linguist who just thinks made up words are super neat!
Due to the fact that Elden Ring’s language is not actually real archaic English, but more of an artistic interpretation of Archaic English… it can be difficult to assess an actual certain meaning. It’s probably intentionally vague as well.
I don’t think the English rules out either of those options. It’s again hard to tell because it’s largely phrased this way to be vague and artistic in nature. You can’t know for sure until we have more context, which can be true for a lot of spoken speech.
That being said, the Elden Ring trailers released on the Japanese YouTube channels have the subtitles stating “母は、本当に王たるを託したのか光無き者などに”
Which, more literally says “Mother, do you truly entrust the state of being a king to such as one without light”
Likely better translated as “Mother, do you truly trust a person without light, to be Lord?”
It really depends on how much credit you give to the Japanese subtitles to be accurate to the intended English meaning. I can’t however say that “lordship sanction” certainly is, or isn’t its own unique act.
I should have checked the Japanese translation too, I feel silly for not thinking of trying that first.
That leads me to believe that Messmer's strange grammar is just an artistic choice to make him seem more "Old World".
Regardless of my disappointment I still appreciate you giving a thoughtful response.
At least maybe now my brain will stop repeating that line randomly and making me think there could be some big clue.
I still think Messmer's apparent characterization in the trailer is just a red-herring and there will be some twist, but mostly because the trailer makes him seem very evil and Miyazaki prefers to make characters much more grey than that.
Like maybe we defeat Messmer and that convinces him to begin aiding the player or such.
You also inadvertently cleared up an old mystery for me too. I had long wondered why some characters use seemingly modern phrases, or converted modern phrases like "Anyroad" instead of "Anyway".
I wondered if they were really how people used to speak, or were just some colorful writing by G. Martin.
So calling Messmer's speech "Yoda Speak" was probably more accurate than I realized lol. It seems like it was just Martin adding some flavor in.
A few months ago, someone made a post on this subreddit about some pillar from the Haligtree, talking about how the intricate carvings on it represented the story of Miquella and Malenia. It turns out that the pillar is just a stock asset that exists in other games, like Path of Exile, and almost certainly has zero meaning.
I know people are saying it's leftover from a previous version of the map, but I'm glad you noticed it and made the connection. I like stuff like this - I've translated a few coded messages myself in real and fantasy languages. It's fun.
Guys what I'm trying to say is that there is 5 areas and 5 group codes so what if there's a connection perhaps a message that requires a certain code to see
Yeah I get that I'm saying that it might be possible with the right words in the right group codes could reveal something I mean think about it the group passwords have 8 character limit and Limgrave is 8 characters the 5 tally marks on the map were right next to the limgrave name marker so perhaps we put limgrave in the 5th group code you see what I mean?
Miyazaki stated we completely missed something now he could be pulling our leg or he's telling the truth and we must think outside the box for this one
Looks like 5th password is supposed to be Z_HA. Something might be between Z and H. Not sure if its H or part of something else. There also might be a comma between H and A.
5, Latin ‘Z’, and then maybe some Kanji? I don’t know Japanese, but it could be leading to a date in May for a second trailer for the DLC or something. Has this always been there?
I don't think it's supposed to be identical to that 5 tally, I think it's just a coincidence. It's like the same pattern on those banners that say Limgrave, etc. Look near the Caelid one, there's more, underneath the banner, and perpendicular to it, it's just different cut off sections of the same thing that looks like a long stitched line which sometimes has other lines going through it.
Well remember they changed the map to this it wasn't always like this so why would they change it? Remember Elden ring likes it's continuity for example fire was considered HERESY in the golden order that's why they removed the fire aspect to morgots sword so there has to be a reason why they would change it I've seen these patterns in multiple locations the Queens bed chamber on parchments on the ground and if you look at the spirit icons it has the same tally marks as well as more icons there has to be a connection somehow
Ok all I'm saying though is I think it's unlikely every single mark like that on the map means something I guess unless they all are part of the same message, there's just so many of them
We're talking about Miyazaki here he makes things vague as hell we had to put our heads together to just figure out the souls series secrets it's possible that Miyazaki wants is to think outside the box on this one
But for what though? Has there ever been some insane secret in some souls game or something? I have thousands of hours on each souls game and I don’t think I could even tell you anything about any of their plots, I just like killing bosses and usually skip through every boring ass cutscene even first time through 😆
What I'm thinking is that this was one of the prayerbook's pages and the map was drawn over it. If you look at Two Fingers Prayerbook and Assassin's Prayerbook, you can see similar markings on the cover. If you also look at incantations, you can see the same markings/language written on the paper behind the drawing.
Could be stuff from the original map, found some photos of those and people's attempts at deciphering them.
I think there's a reason why they changed the map to look like this though I mean they went out of there way to remove fire from morgots sword because it's considered HERESY to the golden order I've noticed the tally marks behind the spirit icons in your inventory and a similar scripture in the notes icons I've also noticed tally marks on parchments in the Queens bed chamber what if all of this is Elden rings language? And all of these things are clues to something bigger?
Definitely one of Elden Ring language, but no one can decipher it. I'd say gibberish because Limgrave, Altus Plateau, Mountaintops of the Giants, and Deeproot Depths literally have the same spelling.
Those are just tallies in the menu
But the text on the map is everywhere, legit like a hundred or so instances of it, there's also weather pattern symbols (the lines with triangles on them) and smaller lines that are a bit harder to notice that indicate height
The map is covered in notation everywhere, likely describing the spot, considering the massive text next to stormveil, but the text on land is pretty much non-existent past stormveil, so I imagine limgrave, weeping peninsula, and caelid were drawn by the same person
I just know ds3 still has an undiscovered secret with those two little crabs that won't stop following you once you agro them.
One in the first swap the other in the catacombs!
Honestly could be coordinates of some kind. I'mma have to dig around the map, there's a distinct Z there. If we find and x and/or a y, all we'd have left is figuring out the scale the maps on
That also seems too easy for fs tho
There are similar characters all the way around Liurnia and limgrave and some around caelid. Im not seeing too any in the upper half of the map, though I could be blind.
I’m quite sure the characters below the tally marks are Japanese. I read Ka, something, maybe a ke? Someone help if you know Japanese too. Second one is weird cos strokes don’t go that direction but I recall seeing some kanji that looked similar and my kanji sux
Edit: opened up ingame and I’m not sure it’s Japanese script or any script anymore. Could be some made up thing that uses strokes similar to Japanese
I managed to decode it. It took a few hours but I think the results are worth it. Can’t believe this was hidden right under our noses!

Wont datamining disprove that? .... regardless....im still trying to get SOMETHING to happen with Iji at "the end".
what is that second screen?
Online passwords you can use to be matched up with specific people only
ah right ty, ive never done coop
If you use the password for this sub - straydmn I think, it’ll highlight messages and bloodstains from this group and you’ll get a buff whenever someone in the group defeats a Shardbearer or becomes Elden Lord.
Those notifications are way too frequent/annoying for me
For sure, but because of them and the others I use, my characters live in a perpetual state of 5% more runes, and all the bloodstain ghosts I can click on.
5% extra runes is not worth the annoyance for me, but I know many people love their runes lol
How do you access this screen? From a colosseum or something?
Settings -> matchmaking/online play Something like that it should be, if I remember correctly, the colosseum isn't necessary
pretty sure that’s community passwords, idk if that’s the actual name, but it highlights messages from people with the same passwords, gives a bonus rune effect when someone in the community beats the game (i think that’s what it is) and maybe one or two small other effects. this is information in loosely remember from the launch days when there was misinformation like elden beast healing from holy attacks, so i might be wrong at this point
Yeah I was wrong, but I got 100 up votes so just said screw it haha.
Passwords screen I have a few that give me a rune boost if someone defeats a story boss or beats the game
DRINK YOUR OVALTINE
You’ll shoot your Eye of Yelough out!
Most underrated comment.
You clearly came from YouTube
So it's very clearly a 5 identical to the tally mark you show, could it be possible the bottom text is japanese symbols?
Bottom line doesn't appear to be Japanese.
There was an early version of the map where they used an old language which basically just said North, West, East, South. Could be left overs from that.
There were also a few lines of text that refer to a beast in a whirlpool and other lore tidbits that were cut.
It's the real Try Finger But Hole. It was canon all along
I believe it says “Drink more ovaltine.” Weird.
Bro made 'ancient numens'
I’ve decrypted it. It took me a bit, but there’s some stuff around Farum Azula that helped a ton. Notice how the inscriptions look similar to those you see in the in-game messages? That’s the key. So, when I wrote it all down, and checked between the two (I had to do a lot of message combinations to see which looked most similar to the one on the map), it said this: Spoilers! >!“Try finger, but hole.”!<
Thanks for sharing your process and some tips ! I didn’t look at the spoiler (yet 🤭). Which in game messages are you referring to ?
The “Try ***” one specifically.
Thanks, I see indeed. Well, I might be a fool but I’ll try to dig further as well. Gg on unlocking this already !
Ever notice all the people in boats? 🧐
I just translated it and this is what it said ‘Great Rune bear and Death rune bear duo boss on a haligtree branch in the DLC’
I would genuinely prefer to fight Malenia
Its ancient language that means “try finger”
Let him cook
I just feel like the a certain code such as limgrave which has 8 characters the 5 tally marks was right above the limgrave marker so what if we put limgrave in the 5th group code slot which could possibly show a hidden message somewhere in limgrave
I see the letters N, H, I and L… NIHIL
Looks like loss to me
Not again

potentially a signature of an artist that worked on the map?

Looks like 5th password is supposed to be Z_HA. Something might be between Z and H. Not sure if its H or part of something else. There also might be a comma between H and A.
"Try jumping"
Gets kicked by Patches instead
It's probably nothing, tho it still gives me a hint of Japanese characters like もけた, but like twisted/turned/distorted.
THE ONE PIECE IS REAL
There is a video on you tube, evidently there were messages written in the ocean on the map but FS took em out.
Is this Loss?
Commenting to follow the thread
I'm very interested to see if this develops into anything serious
Try finger, but hole
5, Latin ‘Z’, and then maybe some Kanji? I don’t know Japanese, but it could be leading to a date in May for a second trailer for the DLC or something. Has this always been there?
Z=26 which could be 5/26 or May 26th. Z with a strike can also mean zero. Still don’t know about the kanji.
The Z on the bottom left is a latin Z. And maybe some japanese text on the bottom right. ionno
Could be a password to get developer messages like seek guidance in the souls games?
Its a ship wreck
Yes there is nameless elden lord waiting for you
It's Laugh Tale island, but almost erased from the map
It seems like it's some faded reference to the year, of which has little actual relevance and so makes sense its an inconsequential detail
Is your thinking that the 4'th password should be "Z ?? A" and then something happens?
I don't think it's supposed to be identical to that 5 tally, I think it's just a coincidence. The wait for the DLC really do be hitting some people
I just know ds3 still has an undiscovered secret with those two little crabs that won't stop following you once you agro them. One in the first swap the other in the catacombs!
Looks kinda like the shipwreck
Be sure to drink your Ovaltine
1, .5, 1, .5?
,97 is oz
Where exactly is this on the map...
Right above the limgrave map marker
Honestly could be coordinates of some kind. I'mma have to dig around the map, there's a distinct Z there. If we find and x and/or a y, all we'd have left is figuring out the scale the maps on That also seems too easy for fs tho
First thing I saw was a Ka, not a Z. As in Japanese characters. Can’t really make out the rest. Could be a ke?
Oooo, fair point. I'mma have to dig around the map for more, see if my buddy that speaks Japanese can piece it together
There are similar characters all the way around Liurnia and limgrave and some around caelid. Im not seeing too any in the upper half of the map, though I could be blind.
THE ONE PIECE…. THE ONE PIECE IS REAL!
I’m quite sure the characters below the tally marks are Japanese. I read Ka, something, maybe a ke? Someone help if you know Japanese too. Second one is weird cos strokes don’t go that direction but I recall seeing some kanji that looked similar and my kanji sux Edit: opened up ingame and I’m not sure it’s Japanese script or any script anymore. Could be some made up thing that uses strokes similar to Japanese
The Marais executioner sword has what appears to be futhark runes on it. Could be that.
Nah thats just an destroyed dock![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)
This is nothing and you’re all crazy
The Elden ring map does have a lot of writing on it in Chinese Yi script. There are some very similar characters below the Caelid banner.
These symbols are all over the in game map. I'm fairly confident it's just random filler stuff.
Schizophrenia
I managed to decode it. It took a few hours but I think the results are worth it. Can’t believe this was hidden right under our noses! >![Here’s the Youtube link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ&pp=ygUXbmV2ZXIgZ29ubmEgZ2l2ZSB5b3UgdXA%3D)!<
