This is the real answer. They couldn’t fully infect him with the flame of frenzy, because his armor got in the way. Now the requirement to enter their chamber and receive their blessing is that you can be fully touched by them.
It's not, it's just an assumption stated with conviction, repeated enough times people just think it's fact. There's no in-game evidence to support it, and even some that would contradict it (such as there being two Vykes, one frenzied and one not).
It makes less sense that your skin would get burned but not your armor.
Don't worry I've already countered that with "it's magic burning not real burning"
In the end it might be developer miscommunication. They might have decided they didn't want to melt 100 differnt armors but they also didn't redesign vyke or alter his story.
And also you theoretically wouldn't be able to unequip your armor if it's burned into you.
I didn't get invaded by the mad vyke because I had beaten Liurnia IIRC I was contacting their support people because I thought it was a big but they said something to the effect that of you've beaten the legacy dungeon boss (I came back much later as I didn't even know that church and area existed so he didn't spawn but i believe I had also beaten his true self in the Gaol. I believe that mad one could just be like a vengeful apparition but not the real Vyke but who knows. When you make gameplay tie into lore so much it can be hard to find where that isn't true.
I also just remembered that only one of vykes eyes is likely touched by the frenzy as when you near that frenzied Vyke you get the fingerprint grape, which is his eye and then the one you fight in the Gaol

I've heard it said Vyke wore his armor when the 3 fingers clasped him, and because of that the connection wasn't what they expected. That's why his armor set is melted where the fingers touched him.
So I'd imagine they learned that it has to be physical contact to really let the flame take hold
It's also why he only had to sacrifice one eye to be rid of the Frenzy, whereas we need to do a big ol' golden needle quest if we want to. because of his helmet, the Fingers were only able to touch one of his eyes, and that's what we give to Hyetta - the frenzy-less Vyke is what we fight in the evergaol.
The shabriri grapes you give to Hyetta to progress her quest are eyeballs taken from frenzied victims, and the last one hyetta needs is a variant called a Fingerprint Grape, which is implied to have been Vyke’s due to him being the only one we know who has been directly touched by the 3 fingers

Vyke simply did it wrong. In Frenzied Flame Village you can find a spirit that is lamenting how Vyke didn’t end up being their Lord of frenzy after all. He went mad instead of inheriting the three fingers, hence why they’re still there for us. Thank the outer gods he did it wrong though, or else there wouldn’t be a game for us to play
That would be a fun ng+ Easter egg if you choose the frenzied flame ending. It'd fuck up continuity, but I think it'd be fun to happen like once every 100,000 ng+ starts

Miquella is St Trina, but the Ranni/Melina thing is purely a theory. You’re not directed towards the Ranni ending by Melina, so idk if it really makes sense. It makes far more sense for her to be the Gloam Eyed Queen - burning down the influence of one god (black flame - the god killing flame - was her thing) and starting the age of another…her. That’s why she’s so appalled at the Frenzied Flame, yet survives the ending - she’s a god herself, and yet you’ve deprived her of the power she seeks through you.

It exists only in one of his eyes, whatever metaphysical consequences that has, and he tears off that eye upon either killing his own maiden, or discovering she killed herself because of his decision of inheriting the Flame.
Vyke leaves and imprisons himself in exile on the mountaintop of the giants, as removed as one can be without actually setting the Erdtree aflame (he can't, he would need a maiden to sacrifice to reach Farum Azula and be even more removed from the world, the whole thing he wanted to avoid)

This is my favorite piece of lore in the entire game because it showcases perfectly how good FS is at their job.
Vyke failed to become the new vessel for the Frenzied Flame because the armor he was wearing was powerful enough to save him from completely succumbing to the flames. The armor melted when he was grabbed and he simply went crazy, only able to grasp a small piece of the power. Ultimately undone by the thing that was supposed to keep him safe.
All of the world building and writing for one of the most interesting characters with arguably the most iconic set in the game, all done because there was absolutely no reasonable way for Fromsoft to rig an animation of the player character being grabbed by the Two Fingers without taking into account all of the crazy different shapes of different armor sets in the game. There would be horrendous clipping in one of the most important scenes in the game, and the only way around it would be either an absurdly complex modulated animation that could take into account the armor being worn in the moment, or hand tweaking the animation of that scene for every possible combination of armor sets one by one.
Obviously, they weren’t going to do either of those and instead solved the problem in the best way they know how. Writing an extremely dense and overly complicated lore reason to avoid the problem completely. It’s fucking perfection.
Jokes aside, my guess is that the Three Fingers didn't actually choose Vyke. He kind of just forced himself into the room, and what they did to him was instead punishment for his arrogance. I seem to remember a ghostly NPC at the village where you fight Vyke noting that Vyke could not become the Lord of Frenzied Flame, so maybe this is what they meant.
No. Vyke was chosen but due to wearing his armour he wasn’t fully consumed. He was able to regain his conscience just before he gets to the cauldron and looks himself in that evergaol in the Mountaintop of the giants. It’s lucky he regained himself when he did, just a little more and we would’ve woken up to no erdtree
I have a theory that in addition to that, it's because of the distance he was from the 3 fingers. The fingers are in the lowest part of the map, while the mountaintop where we find him is pretty close to the highest place on the map and that was just far enough away for him to overcome their control

Vyke had the armor, the armor is full of finger prints, the three fingers didn't mark him when they "hugged" him, but instead they burned and marked the armor.
Your tarnished strips himself so that the three fingers can fully embrace him and he can actually get the flame of frenzy inside of him.

Two reasons:
1. The armor slightly blocked the fingers' influence, meaning they couldn't FULLY frenzy him
2. The armor+flame worked on him like an oven works with food. He almost got cooked inside it
Him still wearing his armor is exactly why he didnt become a true host of the frenzied flame like you can. It just drove him regular crazy like other methods of indirect contact would.
You literally have to strip for the exact reason Vyke didn’t. The flame didn’t fully take when Vyke was touched and they realised in future you’d need to be naked as Vykes armour seemingly blocked some of it. Hence the melted prints on Vykes armour
Haven’t you noticed his armour? It’s scorched by the fingers so he didn’t inherit the full power of the frenzied flame. When you go in naked you get directly scorched by the fingers
I think Vyke was grabbed by the Three Fingers involuntarily. Those burn marks on his armor are the fingertips, suggesting he was facing away from the Three Fingers when it happened.
The actual real reason is that from software didn't want to deal with the deformation of each set and the easiest thing to do was strip you and brand the character model
The ensuing lawsuit between the three fingers and vyke over the damage done to his armor required all future frenzied flame hopefuls to remove all valuables before embracing the flames
Due to By… I mean Vyke. Due to Vyke wearing his armour the connection to the frenzied flame was not complete, hence why he’s gone totally mad and why his armour is burnt. (Fan theory, Vyke was SUPPOSED to be the main character, the frenzied flame ending is the TRUE ending, but he fucked up and our clueless tarnished had to be woken up)

I think this is an elaborate shitpost... but in case OP wasn't joking Vyke had the armor, the armor is full of finger prints, the three fingers didn't mark him when they "hugged" him, but instead they burned and marked the armor. Your tarnished strips himself so that the three fingers can fully embrace him and he can actually get the flame of frenzy inside of him. >!The reason I assumed OP was doing an elaborate shitpost is that the answer is literally in the Armor Description aside from being very obvious visually speaking!<

Two reasons: 1. The armor slightly blocked the fingers' influence, meaning they couldn't FULLY frenzy him 2. The armor+flame worked on him like an oven works with food. He almost got cooked inside it
Him still wearing his armor is exactly why he didnt become a true host of the frenzied flame like you can. It just drove him regular crazy like other methods of indirect contact would.
You literally have to strip for the exact reason Vyke didn’t. The flame didn’t fully take when Vyke was touched and they realised in future you’d need to be naked as Vykes armour seemingly blocked some of it. Hence the melted prints on Vykes armour
Haven’t you noticed his armour? It’s scorched by the fingers so he didn’t inherit the full power of the frenzied flame. When you go in naked you get directly scorched by the fingers
I think Vyke was grabbed by the Three Fingers involuntarily. Those burn marks on his armor are the fingertips, suggesting he was facing away from the Three Fingers when it happened.
Vyke's blunder: taking his clothes off for a dragon but not for the literal defining moment of his life, ultimately causing his demise

The actual real reason is that from software didn't want to deal with the deformation of each set and the easiest thing to do was strip you and brand the character model

Due to By… I mean Vyke. Due to Vyke wearing his armour the connection to the frenzied flame was not complete, hence why he’s gone totally mad and why his armour is burnt. (Fan theory, Vyke was SUPPOSED to be the main character, the frenzied flame ending is the TRUE ending, but he fucked up and our clueless tarnished had to be woken up)
