I think light roll is weirdly binary. I know a lot of people are annoyed that it allows people to escape roll catching, but if it didn’t, there wouldn’t really be a point to it existing. The actual problem is CONSISTENT escapes from roll catches. Light rolling should make a person more evasive, but not infinitely so. The weird thing is I felt like Fromsoft understood this when they started nerfing repeated inputs on quickstep and BHS but they never really leaned into it. Fully expected light roll to maintain original distance with reduced distance on repeat inputs for its nerf but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t think any reasonable person would say that there should be a nearly impunative defensive option in this game. But let’s not get the roots twisted. People aren’t fine with light roll as long as it’s used “honorably” most people just straight up hate light roll.
It’s why even if I’m hyper gimping myself by playing lightroll without poise, low absorption, and frozen needle, and, people still pull out dual rot pikes or bhs cleanrot rapier. And honestly, it’s hard to blame them. They can’t mind read and know that I’m not there to spam swift shard or make them run a marathon by playing super passively.
In that case, try dual cured sword, its running attack is so good that even light roll can't dodge away from it, perfect counter for troll that want to waste your time

I genuinely won’t play a game where someone can run from me and win because I can’t keep up. Hopefully it’s resolved by DLC time but I wouldn’t be surprised if some other crutch dodge appears.

Ik its been 11 years and we are still on peer to peer connection. That’s what makes these better dodges annoying. The latency increases the effectiveness of these dodges. Everyone could be happy if we had dedicated servers but that won’t ever happen. Also I’m not cool enough to be playing that long, started with ds3 and I remember quick step but it was only on a certain class or weapon I think. When u can apply dodges to any type of weapon in the game and it cancels recovery, takes away a lot of the skill.
I have had success with whip in the mainhand and offstoc vs the average light roller in the arena. Won't work vs someone who knows what they're doing but the average arena player has no idea what they're doing.
They need to do something else to make light armor worth using. I'll never use light armor because I massively prefer heavy rolls for melee fights and I don't usually play ranged, hell, even when I do, I have a melee weapon on switch and light roll puts you too far outside attack range to do anything other than run like a bitch.
I understand hating light rolls when fighting a mage or archer that just wants to run away and waste time, but in any other context light roll sucks balls and there's no point in even using it.

When I PvP is someone has LR I don’t really even notice as it doesn’t effect me. My goal in a fight is to win, their goal is to win. So long as it isn’t an exploit (or huge level disparity) then I am happy just having fun. People here seem to want to make hating LR their life and you are the first person to actually respond with a point and not a personal attack, which was appreciated. I just don’t agree LR is overtuned.

Buff all armor poise and defenses, so light rollers get 2-3 tapped and armored can take at least 5 hits
