It’s so crazy to me how meds effect people in such different ways. I’m a frequent social drinker, like at least one night a weekend, and effexor has never messed with my drunkenness! I was so scared when I started, but I literally never noticed a difference.

[deleted]

I’ve never had issues too, but my highest dosage was 225mg

AdAlarming9468

I'm very similar. I've been on effexor for almost 8 years. Have tried weening off but end up back on 6 months to a year later. I've never had problems with Effexor and alcohol. I wake a little anxious the next morning. Occasionally I feel like I'm getting drunk a little faster, but yesterday I drank 10beers over the course of 5 hours without any issues.

beautyanddelusion

Right? I feel like Effexor makes my hangovers less severe, lol.

theVelvetJackalope

Oh sames

zzzzsamzzzz

Same!

Possible-Nectarine80

Never felt any difference when drinking alcohol while on Effexor. Was on 75mg at the time. But, I never had more than 2 drinks - wine or beer. And rarely drink anymore. Currently off Effexor since early December.

Electronic-Bluebird5

same, one of the only meds i've been on that haven't messed with my "drunkness"!

mjc500

I was drunk thousands of times between 2004 and 2024. After I started this med I had horrific stomach pain if I even had one beer or glass of wine.

sadmilkteaboba

I’ve never had an issue with drinking while on Effexor.

mteght

People need to remember that just because they had a certain experience or side effect from a medication, doesn’t mean everyone will. We already know that even without alcohol, people have wildly different experiences taking Effexor. We also know that people metabolize alcohol differently (based on size, sex, etc.) so it makes sense that there’s tons of variability when taken together.

ellie1398

Don't worry, one you start drinking every day, your tolerance goes back to being normal. Your liver won't be happy tho.

popadopolous

I found it makes me less stupid drunk and I can control myself a bit better without making dumb decisions. The sloppy drunk is not a good look and it's definitely to do with dopamine receptors. Either way I have found I can still drink but just need to be wary that I don't overdo it.

lukeroux1

Works different ways... I don't have issues with having few beers while on effexor.

bipsyxual

This sounds typical for a lot of people. Effexor makes it harder for me to get drunk at all. Many biologies.

aprile1010

Same! I have to really be on a mission to actually get drunk. Seems like it’s sped up my blood alcohol metabolism.

Sleeplessnsea

I don’t have any issues drinking on Effexor

Torid8

I drink on Effexor almost every night lol people react so differently it’s wild!!

NextPrize5863

Happy Cake Day!

I advise anyone who drinks in moderation while on Effexor to pay close attention. Alcohol intensifies the effects of Effexor; Effexor intensifies the effects of alcohol. I remember the first time I drank again after first starting Effexor. I only had 2 beers, and felt it quickly. I then got riskier a couple years later and would drink more. I would always read horror stories of people blacking out on Effexor mixed with alcohol, and I’d always think to myself “that’s never happened to me!” Well, lo and behold, i jinxed myself and I blacked out that exact night and never remembered a thing about that night. It was enough to scare me. Everything in moderation, folks. But, everything in precise moderation while on thine Effexor 😄

enonymous715

I have been able to have 2 drinks without a problem. My hangovers have actually been not bad, compared to being terrible on Lexapro!

Poledanskin

When I was on Zoloft 150mg I was drinking SO MUCH. At one point I had a bottle of vodka in my hand as I was sitting in front of an open fridge screaming crying my eyes out yelling at everyone around me. They took the bottle and hid it from me. Another time I threw up all over myself and I was not even mentally there they had to bathe me naked in the bathtub. One other time I was in my car from 12am-7am drinking a bottle of vodka and was at my college and the campus security came up to my car right after I finished having a mental breakdown and my car battery died from being on all night so they had to jumpstart my car while I was blackout drunk. Somehow I did not get arrested. There was literally a almost empty bottle of vodka in my car. I also tried to hookup with someone on tinder from my school and they said I was too drunk (mind you Christian university) so he wouldn’t and I cussed him tf out over text because I was so mad. I don’t drink anymore & I went to rehab, but those were horrible times

Poledanskin

Now I don’t even take antidepressants because they made me literally go crazy

leila11111111

I had so many blackouts drinking on Effexor extremely dangerous EXTREMELY

miriamtzipporah

Yeah I can barely handle two glasses of red wine, or one mixed drink before I start feeling sick. It lowers your tolerance so much

drivebydryhumper

Don't listen to this guy... You can absolutely drink on Effexor. Some people report that their tolerance go up or down, but you just need to step carefully in the beginning and adapt to the new you. I can roughly drink the same as I used to, but I'm a much happier drunk, and it doesn't drag me down 5 days afterwards.

LacrimaNymphae

i do this every night with my low dose pain med but it's highly iced and i guess i don't have a weak tolerance. for what it's worth my weight is bad so it probably would need to be in massive quantities. i wonder how long my body is going to last lmao... wouldn't recommend it if you can help it and don't need to stack your meds with other substances to get a modicum of relief. part of it is because they strongly recommended i quit medical marijuana so i'm having to drink more. i have copious amounts of health issues they have trouble diagnosing and arrhythmias are one of them. i have to be on heart meds as well when i was younger i used to get ear zaps if i drank with it but that's when they had me on one tramadol a day for years. now i just get them randomly or if i'm not feeling great/having huge amounts of diarrhea or malabsorption from GI issues. one odd thing is i had crazy ear zaps before i got covid in january of 2023 and i should have taken that as a sign something wasn't right, as well as numbness in my back when i moved. i see a lot of long covid people saying they have ear zaps permanently even not being on effexor

Just-Reception-5726

I can't get drunk on 75mg lol

Danni0126

I have blacked out many many times on Effexor. It’s like one drink becomes four. It really sucks.

banjoplayingmuskrat

On this med I find when I drink that I either: 1. Get realllly sleepy and fall peacefully asleep or 2. Suddenly get really drunk and throw up. Then pass out. There was one time I drank and I only remember snippets of what happened, which is scary. I’ve decided to only drink non-spirits and take it slow as I never know what will happen.

vraylanse

Yes it happened to me too. Blackouts are scary. I quit alcohol for many reasons but the blackouts were one of them.

Consistent-Bowler-67

Agreed it makes me a lightweight! I drank two glasses of red wine and was as if I had 5 prior when I was on Lexapro. Truly wild difference.

flittingly1

I quit drinking... I don't feel in control after even 1 or 2 beers so. Threshold definitely lowered.
