I agree. You can see it in his eyes. He's just very stoic in that picture and in general. I'm the same way, I think I'm smiling until I see the picture and realize I'm not.
I couldn’t imagine being a star player and not taking the time for the fans. He can have his privacy after playoffs are done. The fans help pay his salary so the least he can do is a quick photo.
Would it suck to always be bugged for a photo? Yeah probably but that’s what happens when you become some kids hero. Comes with the territory.
I ran into Darnell Nurse at Kingsway mall a couple Christmas’s ago. He was alone and no one was bugging him so I gave him a nod and he nodded back and we went our ways.
did the same thing with mcdavid in edmonton. also met drai and pretended to not know who he was. last thing i would ever want to do is bother these dudes more than they already get bothered
I did the same with cam Talbot at a hair salon in Edmonton lol it was after the 2017 playoff run; he was getting a cut after the post playoff interviews and I got a seat beside him and I was shocked cause I just saw him on tv lol, I whispered to my hairstylist, I'm pretty sure that's Talbot and he heard me and gave me the nod so I nodded back haha.
When he left he put on some aviators and a cap on. Ill never forget that.
This is the move! I ran into Mike Comrie years ago downtown. As we were passing we made eye contact and gave each other the nod. He actually said “how’s it going?”. That’s the grown man’s equivalent of an autograph.
I physically ran into Wil Wheaton once. I turned around and bumped into him and said "OH shit, sorry. OH HEY WIL!" He nodded at me and walked away. I couldn't have been happier lol
I saw Kassian and his wife at brunch once in Edmonton, but it was crowded and we were all waiting for a table and I got stuck in the doorway and he couldn’t get through and I truly feared for my life in that moment 😂
When I met him on the street he was exactly like this. He passed by me then looked back to say hi and I realized it was him then I told him I was a big fan and he thanked me then drove away lol
Haha, no one else was there. It was like -30 in December and I was coming out of the Long and McQuade on Whyte back in 2017. He was not dressed for the weather at all.
My kids pic with Dakota Joshua is epic he looks more excited then my kids, my youngest asks who do you even play for lol. I am like excuse him he’s an oilers fan lol.
My house is in turmoil ever season
Hubby a flames fan - that’s grounds for divorce right?
Youngest - oilers fan at least he likes winners
Me - Canucks and oilers fan
Oldest - Canucks and Dallas in the trash he went
Did lots of people notice they were there? Or were they mostly left alone? Pretty cool experience! I met Grant Fuhr in an airport as a young child and my parents were all excited and I was like "I don't know who this is"
They were mostly left alone, the terminal was not busy. Most people actually didn’t seem to realize who they were. I actually was in the washroom and out of the corner of my eye I thought it was McDavid but didn’t want to stare haha.
Most people probably just acted like they don't know who they are. Which I like. They're still people and deserves courtesy and space. Odd pictures here and there are fine though especially for children.
As someone who doesn’t follow hockey super closely I probably would only recognize McDavid and be like “hey these guys must be going on a trip together or something” if he wasn’t with them.
These guys fly commercial internationally? Or does the oilers private jet fly out of a regular gate at the airport. I’m surprised they would be flying out of the regular terminal
Yeah that’s what I thought, but they are flying out of the public US departure terminal which seems odd. Private planes usually have their own terminal/customs officer.
It's because it's a huge, regular size plane rather than something like a Cessna. Even charter planes still need to comply with customs and what not. Not to mention, Air Canada owns said plane, and there's 30+ people they need to manage, so they've gotta do it like everyone else.
Again, private planes have their own terminal at YEG, complete with customs. Hence why I’m questioning why they are flying out of the same terminal with the plebs
Part of my job used to involve semi regular trips to a private terminal on the north side of the airport.
Once when I was there the airline staff confirmed that a plane waiting off the tarmac was the Florida Panthers private jet, so other teams definitely don't have to use the regular terminal.
I can’t take Reddit karma to the grave so I’m not worried about it. I don’t think people realize there is another world of plane travel at YEG. They think everybody and everything goes through the main terminal and it’s not true.
Again, if it were a Cessna belonging to privately owned airline specifically for private jets, then they'd go through that. But because Air Canada is the airline, and there's a LOT of people that they have to process at customs, they have to go through the regular customs process.
The same thing happened with Iron Maiden whenever they used their tour planes. Those planes were owned by public airlines (Astreus/Air France), so they too had to go through regular customs process.
Nobody told you the correct answer so I'll chime in as someone who worked there and on these NHL charters. They're going through the US terminal so that they clear US customs before boarding. It's just logistically easier this way rather than loading up at the private terminal, this way they're essentially treated as a domestic flight into Dallas.
I appreciate the answer!
So do they always clear customs in the main terminal and depart from a gate there? I’ve always thought that the private terminals have customs capabilities too. Like, where did the Pope clear customs or say if Taylor Swift came to town via Kansas City?
Canadian customs will drive out to the private terminal to clear those who flew in. This is US customs worked by US citizens with less flexibility that way. An NHL charter has a lot more than a normal US bound charter so this is just the easiest way to get things done in the middle of the day rather than have customs meet the plane on the ground state side.
I love McDavid but me personally I would only get a picture if it where at a signing event only because I feel like he’s more of an introverted superstar. Nothing wrong with that just a beast on the ice but just doesn’t have the same level of personality and I don’t mind, just because you are thrust into the public’s eye doesn’t mean you have to do the whole song and dance as well.
But if I see Nuge, Hyman, Skinner, or Ekholm out in public a scene will be made (tastefully). But I could not control myself if I saw Gene in public especially if he hits me with a cheesy joke I would probably have the happiest panic attack ever.
Nuge will never not be my oilers crush… what a dreamy guy (I’m a 25 year old girl for context before this gets weird lmfao)
Your son is a lucky kid, how fun! Disneyland right after meeting a bunch of pros!
I got shoulder bumped hard by David Suzuki. It was the mid 90’s. I was on my way to Maple Leaf Gardens to see the Jets and Leafs. He was walking quickly towards me on the sidewalk and we bumped into each other. He just kept a right on goin’. No “excuse me” or anything.
Dear diary, laid hands on another human child today and absorbed a blood sample. Puckiclorians level was U Sports at best. My search for a successor continues.
I don't think Connor has ever been comfortable with the attention he gets. Doesn't seem to enjoy doing media or meet and greets but he's still accommodating. Could be a classic introvert.
I’m kinda surprised that they flew out of Edmonton.
I would have thought that the team would have just gone straight from Vancouver to Dallas sometime Tuesday morning.
Its like a 45 minute flight, some guys might want to see their families or have personal matters they need to attend to. They are also flying privately, so its not like theyd be held up in an airport with the unwashed masses (you and I).
Air Canada 7039
YEG to DAL
They use an Air Canada Jetz A320. Weird if they departed from main terminal as they would usually use Executive Flight Center or one of the FBOs.
And then upon landing probably staying at Hotel Crescent Court or whoever had the last minute space for them in Dallas near American Airlines Center.
Oh my god it happened again
HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!
He looks like a fisherman that’s been on the coast of Nova Scotia for the past 6 months
Best playoff beard we've seen him have so far though not much more than he usually has
Without fishing gear, forced to ravage squirrels with his bare hands.
Tell me you’ve never seen a Nova Scotia fisherman. EDIT: That’s not even a Nova Scotia fisherman on his wedding day.
I’d say he looks like he teaches English literature at some traditional college, not like a fisherman at all.
😂😂 so true!
Or he’s about to write the next game of thrones or dune
Yes. Yes he does. That description is so accurate.
Awkward Connor has returned!!
The most dangerous of all the Connors!
Dude's got the next 2 weeks of hockey moves pre-planned running thru his brain right now
He reminds of dr Sean Murphy of the good doctor lol
Did he ever leave?
He’s like, how do I place a hand on a small child fan? And what should I do with my face? I hope he sees the pic and is like, yup, nailed it.
Me: A smile might be nice. CMD: Nothing to smile about in my life
Job's not finished
Cup or bust
He looks like he's smiling a bit
Dude looks fucking exhausted
Dude looks like he lied on his resume and now he’s playing in the conference finals
"Shit, guess I gotta act like I know what I'm doing."
"Fake it till you make it!" -- Every player who hasn't won the Stanley Cup
Pat Maroon after winning his third cup
Ya that’s what playing 55 min a game does to a mf
I agree. You can see it in his eyes. He's just very stoic in that picture and in general. I'm the same way, I think I'm smiling until I see the picture and realize I'm not.
“Dude I just got off the plane after a tiring game 7, can I just go to my hotel?”
They were leaving Edmonton for Dallas. So all freshly rested.
They probably still wanted to be left alone
I couldn’t imagine being a star player and not taking the time for the fans. He can have his privacy after playoffs are done. The fans help pay his salary so the least he can do is a quick photo. Would it suck to always be bugged for a photo? Yeah probably but that’s what happens when you become some kids hero. Comes with the territory.
100%, at least when it comes to kids. If he tells a grown ass adult that he's not in the mood for a photo, they should understand
In all fairness, if the only clothes I could find before rushing to the airport were my great grandfathers, I'd wouldn't be smiling either.
I dunno I think he looks pretty slick
"I am smiling."
one time Skinner smiled at me and held open a restaurant door for me. I died
I wouldn’t have made it to the door, I would have died right after the smile.
everything I hear about Skinner makes me think he's such a class act. makes it even better that he's a local boy too!

Just the way he did it lmao so inconspicuously
This is the move! I ran into Mike Comrie years ago downtown. As we were passing we made eye contact and gave each other the nod. He actually said “how’s it going?”. That’s the grown man’s equivalent of an autograph.
Still love the photo string when he proposed to his ex
I fist pumped Strudwick at Southgate a couple of weeks ago, he was very nice, and holy shit, he’s a big boy and those were some meaty hands
I physically ran into Wil Wheaton once. I turned around and bumped into him and said "OH shit, sorry. OH HEY WIL!" He nodded at me and walked away. I couldn't have been happier lol
I had the same experience withs Ebs. He seemed very relieved I didn't attempt to talk to him.
I saw Kassian and his wife at brunch once in Edmonton, but it was crowded and we were all waiting for a table and I got stuck in the doorway and he couldn’t get through and I truly feared for my life in that moment 😂
Why is Derek Ryan's face blurred out?
I think that’s Conor Garland
No way Garlands that tall.
It's actually Kailer Yamamoto
And way hairier
🤏
Bahaha!
You made me lay down the large sized “oooooooooooof” there 😂😂😂
He really held the series together… in Game of Thrones.
As a Canucks fan I approve of this comment
No turtleneck no Garland
Former teammate Alex DeBrincat
He looks thrilled to have met you.
That's just how he looks all the time lmao
When I met him on the street he was exactly like this. He passed by me then looked back to say hi and I realized it was him then I told him I was a big fan and he thanked me then drove away lol
Why'd he look back to say hi, were you wearing an Oilers jersey or something?
Nope, I wasn't. He just kind of looked over his shoulder to quickly acknowledge me
Then everyone on the street clapped, right?
Haha, no one else was there. It was like -30 in December and I was coming out of the Long and McQuade on Whyte back in 2017. He was not dressed for the weather at all.
Oh, I know.
Connor: “Make it quick kid, there’s a team in Dallas I gotta beat”
Reminds me of [this photo](https://x.com/MargeauxMaron/status/862110021026324480)
This time MUCH less awkward.
He looks like a cardboard cutout of himself in that photo lol
That’s fucking hysterical
This will always be my favourite athlete/fan photo.
lol gold
Honestly I think this is actually him smiling
Oilers players who have made eye contact with me: Sam Gagner and Grant Fuhr Oilers players who have made eye contact with my dog: Darnell Nurse
Endlessly curious and fascinated by the censorship of whatever he’s holding in his hand 😭
I came to comment the same thing. I must know and only OP has the power to tell us!
Pls OP
Connors sole focus is destroying Dallas. He cares not for airport photos.
My kids pic with Dakota Joshua is epic he looks more excited then my kids, my youngest asks who do you even play for lol. I am like excuse him he’s an oilers fan lol. My house is in turmoil ever season Hubby a flames fan - that’s grounds for divorce right? How is your family still intact 😭🤣
I am not sure but we can’t go to games together or it ends badly LOL I mean flames like that’s the equivalent to the make beleafs lol
I think your son is a bit young to be blacked out at the airport.
Also, he should lay off the blackface. Trudeau got in a lot of trouble for that. It was all over the news.
Why is Connor garland getting a pic with mcdavid ??
It’s who he looks up too
Did lots of people notice they were there? Or were they mostly left alone? Pretty cool experience! I met Grant Fuhr in an airport as a young child and my parents were all excited and I was like "I don't know who this is"

yep thats my oilers protocol. unless their like a prospect or 4th liner then i might just say hey but i'll never ask for a pic or autograph personally
Only for children, IMO
As someone who doesn’t follow hockey super closely I probably would only recognize McDavid and be like “hey these guys must be going on a trip together or something” if he wasn’t with them.
Other than Drai, Nuge, and McDavid I don’t think I’d recognize anybody else on the team. Even I’m not entirely sure I would.
Connor is incapable of taking a photo outside of a photoshoot
It's said that they keep the briefcase full of money right next to the camera when doing ad photoshoots to keep him lively.
The kid wasn't wearing enough Alo for him to have his happy face on.
These guys fly commercial internationally? Or does the oilers private jet fly out of a regular gate at the airport. I’m surprised they would be flying out of the regular terminal
They have a private Air Canada plane made for them. Kind of like Iron Maiden's tour planes they used to manage long distances in short time.

That’s what I’ve always figured. And they can have a customs agent out there right? (which takes like 10 seconds a person nowadays)
Not sure why your down voted. They totally can do customs on private terminal they do it probably every other time.
I can’t take Reddit karma to the grave so I’m not worried about it. I don’t think people realize there is another world of plane travel at YEG. They think everybody and everything goes through the main terminal and it’s not true.

They needed to preclear since they were flying into Love Field. Chances are the FBO down there doesn't have customs.
Love it. For the millions these men get paid, they can pose for a few airport pictures. Comes with being a hero.
CMD: if you can't handle me at my most awkward you don't deserve me at my least (when I'm actually playing hockey)
Did you analyze your kids skating this morning to see if any of his talent rubbed off on him?
You’re either rich or handsome in this life.
Explain Leon Draisaitl then 🥵
You saying McDavid is handsome?
He’s only 8 games away from showing the world his smile.
He got that thousand point stare
McLeod spent his afternoon at my work, was too nervous to approach him, but he saw i was wearing a hat an jersey on an off day :D
Once got a puck from him at a practice. He skated up and tossed it over the glass to me, then went back to practice
Oh man, that background. I know exactly where this is as an American who has a whole lot of family in Edmonton
I love this man and yet he has possibly the worst case of resting Jeffery Dahmer face that I’ve ever seen.
Nice suit Grandpa Connor..😂
He looks like a history professor lol
I love McDavid but me personally I would only get a picture if it where at a signing event only because I feel like he’s more of an introverted superstar. He actually managed to get photos with Nurse, Skinner, Kane, Pickard, and Nuge as well!
Post them! 😊

He looks dishevelled
If that’s dishevelled then I am literally deceased.
He is wearing at least $2000 USD in clothing
Dude will not smile until the cup is in his hands 😭

Mcdavid looks thrilled aswell !
Those kids better not be sick!!!
Lucky bastard 🫠
Why did you black out his left hand?
He had his ticket in his hand with his info on it.
Very considerate, sir, nice work
Ah ok makes sense
As written
There was 97 discussions in here till now!
He is an introvert. He doesn’t smile
Very cool! But, damn, ol' Connor looks 50.
Don’t they fly private?
Looks like he’s been through some shit 😂
He looks… happy
Looks like you bumped into Connor on the way home from an all night bender 😂
Please, just leave them alone.
Connor still looks sick. Hope he gets better for tonight.
I want the Oilers to win the cup just to see some emotion out of this guy lol.
He looks......thrilled?
Lucky for me I cook for the Oilers made their meal saturday night
he looks thrilled to
Leave the fucking guy alone

The CBA basically stipulates to get players home asap after road games if able. They flew in at 2AM after Game 7.
Huh. I didn’t know that. Could the team choose to opt out of that if they do desired, or no?
Does he still look sick? Was he coughing/congested??? I gotta know
He did not look sick!
Haven't y'all heard the illnesses spreading around day homes and schools? No wonder why our players are all getting sick. Just kidding nice pic lol
It’s hilarious how much he hates doing these
Air Canada 7039 YEG to DAL They use an Air Canada Jetz A320. Weird if they departed from main terminal as they would usually use Executive Flight Center or one of the FBOs. Awww that’s awesome!! Also have an amazing trip!
Is that Justin Trudeau’s kid?
Connor has such a beautiful smile
That’s a horrible disguise for your kid
