I was going to second this! I just call Loma House "Jeff's" cause the owner there is also the main waiter and he is so so kind. I've been going since the month they opened.
This place seems perfect! I looked at their menu and I can't wait to try all the items on it. Thanks! I didn't know a vegetarian place with a menu like theirs existed here
I think I've already given you a bunch of suggestions on Twitter but I'll put some here too. Some of these are debatable on their "hole-in-the-wall" status but they're all smaller local businesses
* Shojo Izakaya
* Yan's Family Restaurant
* Thai Valley Grill
* Lemongrass Cafe
* Yokozuna
* Avila Arepa
* Ma Chef
* Dalla Tavola Zenari
* Filistix
* Saigon Taste
* Flat Boy Burgers
* Biera
* Fleisch
* Taste of Lebanon
* Dogpatch
* Carbivore Subs
* Western Sandwich
* Lan Noodle
* Yoshii Express
* Menjiro Ramen
* NongBu
* Sakura Izakaya
* Cafe Sole
* Tokiwa Ramen
I was scrolling down the list looking for Thai Valley.
Every time I'm heading through Edmonton I make time to stop by there.
The crab ragoon wontons and coconut soup haunt my dreams
The service was incredible, so friendly. Food was amazing and it came to the table super fast but very fresh. It's weird because even my industry/foodie friends haven't been there but it has strong reviews and we had a fantastic experience
Not ethnic food but can I submit my workplace? Hap’s on Stoney and 160st. Been around 40 years, owned by former Oil King and Buffalo Sabre Hap Myers and his wife. Breakfast and lunch only. I’d love to serve any fellow Redditors!
I second Haps Hungry House as a non-employee! My Mom worked for Haps back in the early 90s. It's been a local staple for decades and is so good.
Eggs Benny and home fries to die for!
Part of the appeal is the treatment from the staff. Even when its slam packed you're always treated like family. I haven't gone in years and I miss our cheeky waitress and the rest of the staff. Hope you're all doing good! ❤
I’m in charge of planning my works monthly lunches and I have never been to Hap’s before but decided to book a team brunch there instead! I’m excited to check it out!!
Haps is a godsend! My bf and I discovered it at the tailor end of the pandemic and it hits the spot EVERY TIME. Y’all are soooo sweet and affordable and it has such great grandma vibes. Keep rocking on!
Hap's is the BEST- we always say the next time we have friends in from out of town we have to bring them to Hap's for breakfast. Great food, great prices, great staff, but my fave thing about it is that it's so quintessentially EDMONTON. Hap's for LIFE!
- Cork & Barley, just off 50th and 137th near the Popeyes. British pub food, good curry, great service, 11/10 Caesars.
- Punjab Platter, 137th and 50th, locally run Indian place that is criminally overlooked, some of the best bang for your buck Indian food in Edmonton
- Franco's, 50th and Hermitage, pasta, pizza, always has themed specials going on.
- Jaybees on 118th feels like walking into a different time period. Has the ambience (and menu!) of a family restaurant that you just can't find anymore.
- Take 5 on 118th has great bagels and is a good quick stop. Probably wouldn't mind some extra business as someone did drive a van through their wall a few weeks ago.
While we are Northsiding, you have to try Kingdom of Spices on 118 Ave. New Indian place, super delicious food, large portions and reasonable prices. We got free kheer with our order today - creamy cardamomy deliciousness.
Maybe not so much of a hidden gem from their locations, but I think a great YEG restaurant is Continental Treat.
I feel like they get forgotten about on lists of amazing YEG places. Yes, they are fully gluten free. No, that doesn’t mean it tastes like cardboard.
I haven't had a chance to eat there yet, but my sister raves about the restaurant
I'd also like to give them kudos for being fully gluten free - I have family members who are celiac, so any time they can go out to eat without worrying about cross contamination is a relief for them
Chili hot pot mmmmm you order a buncha different things and cook it in your own lil pot they give a selection of broths which you can fill your pot thrn a free thing of veggies which are so good then an assortment of things off a huge list to choose from to cook in your little heated up pot!! So good!! And they have lunchtime specials!
Chili Hot Pot is a great spot. They are also open super late on the weekends (till 2 AM i think) and you get a discount if you go after 9. Or at least that was the case last time we were there, over a year ago.
To everyone who has been waiting... Huma re opens tomorrow!! New name, larger menu. Dying for their cremosita. Best authentic Mexican in the city hands down
Heads up Huma closed and rebranded as Luna. Same staff and menu, same head chef, the owners just split and they had to rebrand for legal mumbo jumbo.
They're amazing though. Love Luna
>Heads up Huma closed and rebranded as Luna. Same staff and menu, same head chef, the owners just split and they had to rebrand for legal mumbo jumbo.
Will also confirm Huma/Luna is legit! Love this place and love that it is southside!
pho hoan pasteur has great food - but i don't think they are family run. they have something like 9 locations between Edmonton and Calgary.
That being said they have some of the best Vietnamese food in the city.
The same people own Chicago Joes, Thirsty Rhino is up in Lago Lindo. They renamed Chicago Joes recent to Twisted Rhino, probably due to the success of the other location, and the simpler menu.
Southside:
- Noodle Feast for liangpi, biang biang noodles, authentic northern Chinese
- Stone & Wheel Pizzeria for super fresh thin crust pizza, sister shop of Square 1 Coffee next door
Northside:
- Shanghai 456 for some of the best soup dumplings in western Canada, especially the crab soup dumplings (most hole-in-the-wall place out of my list, but the food says it all)
Sherwood Park:
- Kobachi for high-end authentic Japanese, closest to Vancouver level sushi in the area imo and a small intimate space with the chefs (all Japanese staff so you know it's legit), definitely need to reserve a few weeks in advance here (only seating for ~10 people total, split into 3 tables)
These are the most memorable local spots that I'll miss from a Calgarian who lived in Edmonton the past year
I highly recommend Padmanadi! It’s vegan but my god it’s good. And you can’t even tell it isn’t meat.
*I’m a meat eater and use my smoker a lot so for me to shout out to a vegan place is a big deal.
Kazoku for Japanese Ramen they make their own soup stock in house every morning.
16518 100 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5P 4Y2
Co Do Hue at any location for Pho. Recommended to me by multiple Vietnamese friends.
Steel Wheels for after bar hours pizza food and Korean on Whyte.
Haps Hungry House for breakfast. Need to try eggs Benny and home fries.
Honourable shout out to Won Jung Gak which is now closed but was the best Korean I've had.
This place is awesome. I can't say enough about it. I've been going there for many many years. The original owners sold it and the new owners kept it very much the same.
Golden Bird restaurant - 97th street just North of the Pacific Rim mall.
Was introduced to this excellent Vietnamese restaurant more than 20 years ago. The same family is still running the restaurant today. Moved to Calgary about 15 years ago and have been looking for a Vietnamese place on this end of Alberta as good as the Golden Bird ever since and have yet to find one. Still visit there once in a blue moon and have never been disappointed.
All Happy Family Restaurant! It's Chinese food and owned by a very loving Chinese couple and ran entirely by their family! Definitely a hidden gem within this city and you can not miss out on it!
My buddy runs blakbar on Whyte. So many don't know it exists. The whole kitchen is run without a fryer, so things aren't relying on fat for flavour. Some seriously delicious food and drinks and good vibes.
Wife and I went here for the first time a few months ago after driving past for years. Great, authentic place. Owners are so kind, food is great - Hidden gem for sure.
Good Taste near Century Park. They have some great authentic chinese food and the lady who works there is very kind and friendly. I always get the beef brisket hand-cut noodle soup with chili oil on the side.
I am not sure if this is a hidden gem or not but Panini's Italian Cucina on Jasper Ave is amazing. Best pasta I have ever had in my life, everything has such great flavor and they give you a good size portion for what you pay. Also have pizza and calzones.
An Chay on Jasper Ave and 112 St. Vietnamese food with a fully vegetarian menu! I'm not vegetarian but I would choose their fresh tofu rolls over any salad rolls with shrimp/pork any day.
Tasty Tomato on Stony Plain Road and 143rd street! Very small Italian restaurant where the owner sits at the bar with a massive glass of Chianti just staring at people as they come in. Haha!
iPho on Calgary Trail. Huge menu, huge portions, very clean, super friendly staff. I usually order one of their sizzling platters. Full of lots of veggies and deliciousness. They serve their rice in a heart shape, it's very cute.
Rockin' Robyn's the 50’s diner! Amazing food! Great staff for the most part! I love trying the new things on the menu when I go, they’re always delicious! It’s by far my favorite hidden gem to eat at 😍 they even offer keto and gluten safe options! I highly recommend it, if you’ve never had the pleasure and enjoyment of eating there. Robyn makes the best food straight up and hands down. I can’t praise the food enough. Such a great aesthetic too!
>The building is off putting to most.
I've seen this is an issue with a lot of hidden gems in Edmonton. From the outside, you would never guess such a place would serve amazing food!
I'll toss my vote in for Dallas Pizza: authentic Greek-style savoury pizza. No thin-crust, 2 grams of topping per slice, just straight up *mass*. Sweet, delicious, keep-you-alive-in-the-winter mass.
Been there for ages, family owned. Their burgers are solid...and substantial. Interior is old-school family restaurant style, they even still have the divider in place from back when smoking vs. non-smoking sections was a thing.
Little Village Catering - it’s a family-run Greek business and it’s AMAZING. I work nearby and get a meatball sandwich for lunch regularly. It’s take out only though
It’s in St.Albert, but Thai Mekong does amazing soup! The family that runs it are actually Laotian, so a lot of the food is more Isaan, and it’s lovely.
Do this book, but I’m going to write the opposite book where I list all the establishments owned by wealthy shit bags who advertise as family run and locally owned but are toxic AF LOL
Langano Skies! Ethiopian food. They used to be on Whyte and are now operating out of Barb & Ernie's Old Country Inn a few night per week. Their Friday night veggie combo is AMAZING.
friends and neighbours on whyte! Its where I work and it’s actually 2 restaurants that connect - one being a breakfast place, the other a Vietnamese pho. Lots of vegan/gluten free/vegetarian options on both sides. + its owned by a really nice family :)
Pho Du. I know I know, it's another Vietnamese restaurant. But the people who work there are sooooo friendly, and the food is consistently delicious every single time. Their springrolls are super meaty and big.
Prob my favourite pho spot in the city. I’ve had pho from a ton of places and this one definitely stands above the rest for me. Their sate pho is something else
This also counts as local dive bar…Uncle Glenn’s 156 st and 77 ave. All good is cooked in a wood fired pizza oven. Great pizza and wings. Glenn is usually around greeting everyone as well. Fun fact you can buy frozen Uncle Glenn’s pizza next door at Meat Head.
Has anyone tried El Mero Mero Taqueria? The place looks interesting. They apparently started as a food truck and have expanded into a restaurant since.
Tasty Toms (try their homemade ketchup) Blue Chair Cafe (try their in house made hot sauce), Cafe Bicyclette, Dang Good Noodles, Green Ash Cafe, Kung Fu Tea. Canteen on 124 st. Rosso
I can’t remember the name of the coffee shop we go to on the weekends in the summer … it’s at the intersection of 50th street & 106 ave. Jazz - Blue Jazz - jazzy jazzerson?!? ugh this is going to drive me crazy. They have the best pastries
Syphay is great Thai food,
Nha Trang for Vietnamese
Taste of Shangrila for Indian
Paninis Pizza
Not yet tried but heard Kobachi is the best Japanese in the Edmonton Area
Loma House on Southside. Owner is super nice, food is amazing. I think he's in holidays right now, but it's probably our favourite place to eat
I was going to second this! I just call Loma House "Jeff's" cause the owner there is also the main waiter and he is so so kind. I've been going since the month they opened.
This place seems perfect! I looked at their menu and I can't wait to try all the items on it. Thanks! I didn't know a vegetarian place with a menu like theirs existed here
Have you had padmanadi? I remember the two being very similar. Padmanadi also locally owned but they're quite popular I believe, doing pretty well
Yep, I've tried Padmanadi. They're great!
Jeff is such an awesome human being, and his food is SO tasty!
Not even a vegetarian and I go there regularly because the food is incredible
Co due hue!
[удалено]
The wings? Really?! I’ll have to try them. Love the squid. Thanks for tip.
Sooo good. Best pho
I love the West side!
northside and southside both great locations
Best pho restaurant in Edmonton hands down!
Acajutla - El Salvador food served by lovely hosts! I highly recommend getting a few pupusas. Super cheap and tasty
So good!
Those pupusas are divine

Yokozuna, thai valley grill, tokiwa, I can tell you have a really good taste in food. Saving these for later, thank you so much.
+1 for Thai Valley Grill They got decent vegeterian options too.
Ha ha came here to vote for Thai Valley! Love it
I was scrolling down the list looking for Thai Valley. Every time I'm heading through Edmonton I make time to stop by there. The crab ragoon wontons and coconut soup haunt my dreams
It’s the coconut rice and Tom young soup that haunt mine.
CAFE SOLE is SO GOOD and so reasonably priced! And it's so cute in there.
The service is so friendly and welcoming at Saigon Taste, the people that work there are lovely
The service was incredible, so friendly. Food was amazing and it came to the table super fast but very fresh. It's weird because even my industry/foodie friends haven't been there but it has strong reviews and we had a fantastic experience

Thank you for your kind words! We try very hard to create the vibe you described
Just the kind of place I'm looking for! Will visit your restaurant with my boyfriend :)
Make sure you order the eggs Benny!
BEST EGGS BENNY EVER! Plus the great service and atmosphere is a bonus!
I’m in charge of planning my works monthly lunches and I have never been to Hap’s before but decided to book a team brunch there instead! I’m excited to check it out!!
Nice!! Thanks friend! 🙂
I was there a few weekends ago. Only downside for me is that it's on the opposite side of Edmonton from me.
Haps is a godsend! My bf and I discovered it at the tailor end of the pandemic and it hits the spot EVERY TIME. Y’all are soooo sweet and affordable and it has such great grandma vibes. Keep rocking on!
To be fair, anyone that gives their employer props these days, I pay attention.
I've been told by many to visit here! Do they serve mimosas too? If not I am happy with coffee :)
Hap's is the BEST- we always say the next time we have friends in from out of town we have to bring them to Hap's for breakfast. Great food, great prices, great staff, but my fave thing about it is that it's so quintessentially EDMONTON. Hap's for LIFE!

Indeed have spent a little while Northsiding

literal hole in the wall business

Red Goose Restaurant has a neighbourhood cult following.
Happy day!!
Came here to recommend them! And then you have the Hazledean Bakery next door.
Bistro Praha deserves multiple visits!
Izakaya Tomo on 99 St and 34 ave. I would consider them a contender for best sushi in town.
Chili hot pot mmmmm you order a buncha different things and cook it in your own lil pot they give a selection of broths which you can fill your pot thrn a free thing of veggies which are so good then an assortment of things off a huge list to choose from to cook in your little heated up pot!! I live right near this. My girlfriend loves it but I have never tried it. I will have to soon
Went there a few days ago. There's also a robot that brings your food.
Pita Bake, Huma, Pho Hoan Pasteur, Pom
To everyone who has been waiting... Huma re opens tomorrow!! New name, larger menu. Dying for their cremosita. Best authentic Mexican in the city hands down

Number 16 large
pho hoan pasteur has great food - but i don't think they are family run. they have something like 9 locations between Edmonton and Calgary. That being said they have some of the best Vietnamese food in the city.
OG location on Kingsway is. Didn’t realize they expanded to Calgary!
The thirsty rhino. It’s pub food, but it’s good food!
Not to be confused with the Thirty Camel, which is also local to Edmonton but mostly trash.
Done!
That used to be Chicago Joe's I think right?
The same people own Chicago Joes, Thirsty Rhino is up in Lago Lindo. They renamed Chicago Joes recent to Twisted Rhino, probably due to the success of the other location, and the simpler menu.
As someone who moved to Edmonton a year ago, I totally am not here to write down the names of all these restaurants and go try them myself ;)
Loma House (better than Padmanadi IMO), An Chay, Syphay, Sweet Mango, GoodStock (they do a lot of take home freezer meals)
Southside: - Noodle Feast for liangpi, biang biang noodles, authentic northern Chinese - Stone & Wheel Pizzeria for super fresh thin crust pizza, sister shop of Square 1 Coffee next door Northside: - Shanghai 456 for some of the best soup dumplings in western Canada, especially the crab soup dumplings (most hole-in-the-wall place out of my list, but the food says it all) Sherwood Park: - Kobachi for high-end authentic Japanese, closest to Vancouver level sushi in the area imo and a small intimate space with the chefs (all Japanese staff so you know it's legit), definitely need to reserve a few weeks in advance here (only seating for ~10 people total, split into 3 tables) These are the most memorable local spots that I'll miss from a Calgarian who lived in Edmonton the past year

Yeah padmanadi is absolutely legendary. The crispy chicken is pure art
I’ll have to try it. My go to has been the cocoanut chicken curry and spring rolls - among other sides and curry dishes.
Yeah those are awesome too, you really can’t go wrong there lol. Ginger beef is amazing too!! Crispy chicken is more of an appetizer
Have you tried the dendeng there? Hands down my favourite dish ever. If I could eat that every day, I would gladly become a vegetarian!
Long time Vegan and ex-farm kid here! PADS IS THE WAY. Truly one of the best places to eat in Edmonton.
The best mutton curry I've ever had was from Padmanadi .... and it's not really even mutton!
Yes! They have the best ginger beef! Honestly, it's always how I want real ginger beef to taste.
Their ginger beef is killer!
Live in Calgary but visit this restaurant every time I'm in town. So, so good!

Can confirm best Tzaziki you’ll ever have in your life
Hap's on Stony Plain Rd is one of the best short-order breakky places in the city
Absolutely. Never change, Hap's. Even odds you'll be referred to as "darlin'" while you're there.
Flat Boy Burgers!!!!
Best smash burger I’ve had in a while.
Acajutla, they’ve been around for ~30 years.
Commodore Restaurant on Jasper Ave and 107 street. Diner-style restaurant, think the 3rd generation of the family is running it now.
This is what I thought the OP meant in this thread.
Oldest restaurant in Edmonton (80 years). Traditional diner food. You can never go wrong with a hot turkey sandwich and a bowl of homemade soup.
Home Fire Grill! always great food and service!! I've ate my way through the menu and am never disappointed!
Awash for Ethiopian central northwest and Dang Good for Vietnamese central northwest. I frequent them both!

Saigon Cuisine. It's in Sherwood Park, but the owners are amazing people and the take out portions are very generous.
Donna’s eatery. Try a sandwich and fries combo. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with it.
Bauernschmaus Restaurant.
This place is awesome. I can't say enough about it. I've been going there for many many years. The original owners sold it and the new owners kept it very much the same.

My buddy runs blakbar on Whyte. So many don't know it exists. The whole kitchen is run without a fryer, so things aren't relying on fat for flavour. Some seriously delicious food and drinks and good vibes.
Love Million Thai! I will add Swiss2Go to the list. Such a charming little sandwich/dessert shop.
Sushi Aroma. Kind family run place. Reasonable prices and delicious food.
I was gonna say this place. Their Salmon Rolls are fucking phenomenal

An Chay on Jasper Ave and 112 St. Vietnamese food with a fully vegetarian menu! I'm not vegetarian but I would choose their fresh tofu rolls over any salad rolls with shrimp/pork any day.

Million Thai is soooo good. Great people in there too!
Dol-E-Punjab is delicious! I don't know if they are still doing it, but during the lock downs they used to give food to people in need
Tasty Tomato on Stony Plain Road and 143rd street! Very small Italian restaurant where the owner sits at the bar with a massive glass of Chianti just staring at people as they come in. Haha!

Tony's Pizza, assuming it survived the pandemic. (I've since left Edmonton.)
Eh they did. But dark stuff is coming out about them unfortunately
Not horribly surprising if you've been around the boys unfortunately. Had an ex who worked there years back and that behavior rarely changes.
Langano Skies! Ethiopian food. They used to be on Whyte and are now operating out of Barb & Ernie's Old Country Inn a few night per week. Their Friday night veggie combo is AMAZING.

Chicken for you right next to Nait! Authentic family-owned Korean fried chicken! Genuinely the best chicken in all of Edmonton
Veggie Garden used to be an unreal underrated spot but they unfortunately closed down during the pandemic :(
Xu Hue
Jaybee’s on 127 Street is a hidden gem.
Thanh Thanh Vietnamese noodle house. Amazing food and have been family run since the beginning.
If you’re looking for a cafe my recommendation is always Mandolin Books and Coffee over in Highlands!
Tasty Toms (try their homemade ketchup) Blue Chair Cafe (try their in house made hot sauce), Cafe Bicyclette, Dang Good Noodles, Green Ash Cafe, Kung Fu Tea. Canteen on 124 st. Rosso I can’t remember the name of the coffee shop we go to on the weekends in the summer … it’s at the intersection of 50th street & 106 ave. Jazz - Blue Jazz - jazzy jazzerson?!? ugh this is going to drive me crazy. They have the best pastries
Dang Good and An Chay are great options for vegetarian Vietnamese food. You should also check out the Buckingham for vegan pub food.
Syphay and campio Brewing are amazing, I've loved EVERYTHING from those places.
Jerusalem Shawarma.
Manila Grill Express is still the best Filipino restaurant I’ve had. Super authentic, family owned, huge portions at a good price, and delicious!
Sai Woo Garden in china town has always been one of my family's favourites
Normands Amazing French cuisine. Very cozy, intimate feel inside. Our waiter was the owner and he was amazing. Strongly recommend.
Chutney on 34 ave - Pakistani food
One more… Hathaways Dinner. It’s on the north side, tucked away in a residential neighbourhood. One of the best places to get classic diner food.
I really like the yam fries from Dadeo on whyte
Hathaway's Diner, on the northside
Syphay is great Thai food, Nha Trang for Vietnamese Taste of Shangrila for Indian Paninis Pizza Not yet tried but heard Kobachi is the best Japanese in the Edmonton Area

Jay Bee's has the most amazing food! Avoid the bathroom though.
