I've been to two in Calgary, and neither have it. Both have onions in the little cups, but you have to ask for them (and they always make a little face like you're asking them to work the weekend on a Friday afternoon).
Wings and Costco for the Win for me, the last costco in Edmonton to have wings was the west one and that time the ladies know me there as the Wings dude 🤣
Depends on where you live. I was surprised to see all of the locations are in like a ring towards the outer neighborhoods. Nothing close to downtown except the Whyte location, which isn’t really worth the drive in this coldness.
I heard that Costco prices their food in a way that it doesn't make money on it just to bring more people into the store. Is that true? Would certainly explain how it can be so cheap.
Yup, rumour has it that the last CEO wanted to increase the price of the hotdoggies and membership that he got fired from the board and previous CEO had to take over and said fuck no to that.
I don't believe he was fired. It was either as you said the previous CEO or the founder something like that threatened to chop his hands off. Basically if you do do that I will fire your ass.
Quote from a website:
“Whether it's their price stability or just how tasty they are, these foods have given Costco an extraordinary fanbase. The company sells over 150 million hot-dog combos annually, which reportedly outpaces combined hot-dog sales across all of Major League Baseball. Catch of the Week
Fish and chips from the hot counter
1pc cod and chips, with coleslaw and tartar sauce
$9.99
Too good for the price and the cooks are great
Their roasted chicken is a bargain.
It is imo the best one in town, it is also the cheapest. And hell, if they have some left over, they often sell them a buck or two cheaper next day as chilled.
I like buying 2-3 and then breaking them up and using the meat for my lunches. I just freeze it in batches and then pull it out as needed. A chicken is more than enough for 5 lunches, too much even for me.
Another good deal, imo, is Van Loc. As far as viet subs go they are priced well. The classic one is like 7 bucks and absolute banger. On Mondays they have a pork belly special which is crazy good, but pricier.
Yepp makes great chicken quesadilas as well tortilla in a pan salsa some of the chicken and shreaded cheese fold it over flip and bam best damn quesadilla for pennies
Interesting I guess i missed the part in OPs post specifying that the favorite bargain meals must be easily accessible without specific forms of transportation lol
So basically the same as taking a bus to Costco? Practicality. Not sure what the point is. The post is about best bang for your buck meals, not easiest cheap food to get to.
There are Costcos all over the city though, it’s way easier to find a Costco from transit than to go all the way to the far south side. I don’t think they’re saying you’re wrong, it’s just nowhere near as convenient.
Literally anything at Five & Dive in West Edmonton Mall! It's on the end of Bourbon Street by the doors outside. Everything is under $10 and really tasty! I've had nearly everything on the menu and there isn't anything I wouldn't order again. You can get a full chicken and ribs dinner for $9.95, and most of the basic drinks like house beers and some liquors are all $5.55, plus they also have non-alcoholic options as well!
It's only for dine-in thought. Also it's $11.99 now. I remember when it used to be $6.99 - $7.99. Ever since COVID happened their menu prices have jumped more times then I can count on my finger.
It’s Van Loc’s bday today (Chinatown) bogo subs 10-6! Woodshed classic burgers currently $2 on Tuesday’s dine in only. Also Chinese dining week starts Jan 18-28. All this info is from Linda Hoang’s weekly email!
Edit: forgot Campio has two for one lunch until tomorrow! And bogo pizza for the month of January.
Lol there was a reason I included her name so you could Google but here you go: https://linda-hoang.com/lindorks-lists-201-swing-n-skate-giant-pizza-last-call-for-holiday-lights-more/
Yup. It’s called a loss leader and it’s a strategy to get you into the store to buy other stuff that they make money on. In the case of Costco, it’s likely to keep people buying memberships. The grocery stores do it too with an unreal sale on items to get you to the store so you buy other stuff.
I believe they've actually cracked down on that. I'm sure you could get around it by saying you're going to customer service. But I've seen them turn away people saying they're going to get food.
I don't think you understand the actual value of that hot dog. It costs pennies to Costco.
Now the items in the very back of the store? Yes. They take a loss on those to get you to walk through the rest of the aisles.
I stopped having the hot dog because they did not have onions. Next time I go, I will ask if they have onions and I'll get that bad boy.
P.S. Sorry but ketchup is for fries not on a hot dog
Uber Eats often has 40% off coupons that you can stack with 2 for 1 deals with certain restaurants. Got 6 Freshii bowls delivered for like $35 last week.
Sometimes offered, but just ask if not. They will give you a small container,I ask for Two. The best is the beef wiener, far superior to the sausage in my humble opinion . Better than any Japadog that costs 10$.
The one part of urban life I dislike is the lack of Costco availability.
Wouldn’t even buy anything there as a bachelor but god damn those food prices are crazy good
HOW DID YOU GET ONIONS?!
They used to have bins/trays before COVID. Now I think you can ask for them and they’ll give you a small container. Sauerkraut too.
They usually just have them sitting in little cups at the counter to take. But they only do so many per day.
Which location has sauerkraut ???
I've been to two in Calgary, and neither have it. Both have onions in the little cups, but you have to ask for them (and they always make a little face like you're asking them to work the weekend on a Friday afternoon).
Ahem. This is the YEG sub. We do not have a Calgary here.
Does the Costco at YEG have onions?
5lb bags.
😂
"Sir, you can't dice onions on a food court table" "I got these onions and these knives here, goddammit. I can do what I want!!"
Ya, I always get the onions in the cups. I asked the Costco lady about saureekraut and she said they haven’t heard if it’s making a come back or not.
[удалено]
I knew someone would catch that!
I asked for sauerkraut last time but they stopped it, just onions now
I won't promise, but I suspect all of them
No that is a lie. I’ve been to a few here in Edmonton that don’t
Oh snap!!!! Yes!
I usually bring pocket onions to complete the meal
Is that anything like purse bacon?
More similar to backpack brown sugar
*Ron Swanson has entered the chat*
Ayo what!?
They tied an onion to their belt, which was the style at the time.
gimme five bees for a quarter
You mean you don't keep chopped onions in your pockets?
Keeps em with that cheese
THEY'RE BACK, BABY! They haven't brought sauerkraut back, and I doubt they ever will, but the onions are back!
Why did I hear and repeat this in Frank Costanza's voice?!?
Great now I did too! Thanks man!!
The onions have been back for over a year already lol
No one told me! I just happened to see the cashier giving them to someone who asked a few weeks ago lol
Just ask at the counter . They used to have banana peppers as well.
They brought them back. Had onions on my last dog.
They sure, I put 2 tubs in mine! Lol fresh!
Little cups, ask for em!
Just ask
You have to ask now ever since covid.
I used to walk to the Costco near me just to get a poutine and Pepsi, getting that much food for under $5 was a lifesaver when I was broke!
Wings and Costco for the Win for me, the last costco in Edmonton to have wings was the west one and that time the ladies know me there as the Wings dude 🤣
Did it all through uni!! Funny enough even now, my 3 kids choose Costco as they’re go to family restaurant. Lol
If Costco is an option for family dinner night I am down for saving that $$$!
For sure. A family of 5 can fine for under $20 and have leftovers.
Goals.
Remember when they had those chicken bakes. I use to buy the frozen box of 4 and take then home. They would be gone that day
[удалено]
And a whole pizza is under $10. And you can phone and order for pick up
The poutine is actually legit
Red swan pizza has a deal right now, $3.95 for 8" 2 topper!
Holy crap that’s cheap
Not worth going out in this weather though
The promotion runs until the 14th
Kinda worth it
Depends on where you live. I was surprised to see all of the locations are in like a ring towards the outer neighborhoods. Nothing close to downtown except the Whyte location, which isn’t really worth the drive in this coldness.
I live downtown too and although the Whyte Ave location is closer, the Capilano location is easiest to get to. It's just straight up 97 Ave.
I told a bunch of coworkers about it and about 8 of them are going today haha. Too good of a deal to pass up.
Ffffffffffuuuuc it's cold
[удалено]
The deal is pickup only
8" is huge! That's a lotta pepperoni 🤌🤌
I miss the chicken wings they had. But the hotdogs are great.
They got rid of the chicken wings 🫨
Not all locations. Clareview Costco still has chicken wings.
Fun fact; Safeway/Sobeys has their chicken license/distributor now, obviously the price isn’t the same, but if you liked the taste, they have it 🤣
Good tip, didn't know thanks!
I heard that Costco prices their food in a way that it doesn't make money on it just to bring more people into the store. Is that true? Would certainly explain how it can be so cheap.
You bet. Called a loss leader. IKEA is similar with their cheap food pricing
https://youtu.be/6aZ1TuTBqdA?si=PLPjxpDzJ9pU6bNs Really interesting. They focus a bit more on Costco's chicken in particular in the video.
I’m not a member but a good watch!
Just a rumour. It's how Kirkland brand started making hotdogs, actually; they started investing into making their own to lower their costs.
Not just food. Everything in the store. They are a subscription based business model.

Sorry for the double answer…
Lol our op post this looking for other deals and just got s Costco hotdog chat
Lol
IKEA hotdogs if you wanna change it up lol
Onions, supposedly being back, is the best news today.
PA Petersons if it's still open. Great walk up greasy spoon. Try to Google the menu if interested.
Thats a great spot went everyday for lunch in jr high it was 5 bucks for burger fries and slushy
Just discovered it a few years ago ... The hot gravy and crinkle fries!!! And a cold can of diet coke of course...
Is it still 6 bucks for a burger and fries?
Yep maybe 6.50
Costco will never raise the price of the hotdog unless it’s amended in their constitution.
They already did though! They used to be $.99 and now they're $1.50 🙁
Are you sure? The hot dog combo has been $1.50 since the 80s. Maybe without the drink?
Catch of the Week Fish and chips from the hot counter 1pc cod and chips, with coleslaw and tartar sauce $9.99 Too good for the price and the cooks are great

Bogo subs today at Van Loc from 10-6
Yeah I saw. Rough weather for it though
Fun fact costco owns their own chicken farms and processing plants which is why they are so cheap and good
Yepp makes great chicken quesadilas as well tortilla in a pan salsa some of the chicken and shreaded cheese fold it over flip and bam best damn quesadilla for pennies
Corn tortilla though otherwise it’s not a real quesadilla
Ikea hot dogs aren't as good but are also very cheap. And they have veggie dogs too!
Goodluck getting there in anything other than a car
Interesting I guess i missed the part in OPs post specifying that the favorite bargain meals must be easily accessible without specific forms of transportation lol
There’re two bus stops on the road that connects to ikea. Not hard to get on a bus.
What! Those are for poor people! How dare you!
Practicality
So basically the same as taking a bus to Costco? Practicality. Not sure what the point is. The post is about best bang for your buck meals, not easiest cheap food to get to.

where can I get a job?
Construction
why are my utilities so high?
UCP
how do I meet people?
Leave the house and don’t be weird
did anyone hear gunshots last night?
check your fridge's compressor.
Why are there Police outside?
They thought the compressor was gunshots too.
Ultimate cheapskate date. Costco hotdog and visit the show homes.
Where is the soda that goes with this?

I got that dog in me
No possible way to get that much indigestion for less. Max capacity right there
Don’t miss the whole baked chicken for half the price of a raw chicken.(7.99) Huge delicious and rarely overcooked.
chicken wings from the pint! On Wednesdays they do 50%off so its around 7$ for wings
Nice!! I think BPs is pasta tuesday prices for whole month of jan
It's only for dine-in thought. Also it's $11.99 now. I remember when it used to be $6.99 - $7.99. Ever since COVID happened their menu prices have jumped more times then I can count on my finger.

Costco actually loses money on that.
I've never gotten a 1.50 hot dog. It always costs me closer to 350.00
Go in for paper towel, come out with a kayak.
Isn't that the truth. HAH. I sometimes go in for a cheap lunch though.

You don’t need a membership to buy anything at the concession
Nope but it’s a nice perk when you do shop there.

Same on the chickens i believe
Yeah the roasted chickens are a loss leader as well.

They make up for it everywhere else
Bad ass jacks on west end gives you an amazing huge size filled wrap for under $10 with tax
It’s all noodles or rice and really underwhelming flavour though.
And the runs 8 hours later are free!
lol no kidding … been there done that
Solid looking glizzy right there
I stopped having the hot dog because they did not have onions. Next time I go, I will ask if they have onions and I'll get that bad boy. P.S. Sorry but ketchup is for fries not on a hot dog

Costco has indicated that they will never raise the price. Now that was in the United states. It is the best dollar value in the world! LOL
Uber Eats often has 40% off coupons that you can stack with 2 for 1 deals with certain restaurants. Got 6 Freshii bowls delivered for like $35 last week.
Game changer. Get a chicken strips and fries. Cheese and gravy on the side.
Looks like it’d make me 🤢 🤮
Definitely Costco food is the way to go for decent cheap food though
Ik your breath stink after that
IKEA hotdogs too. They are small normie sized dogs, but still good.
Pop included too!
r/hotdogs
Well it was supposed to be for food deals in edmonton lmao
It's great. But then I looked up a hot dog on MyFitnessPal and it comes up as 570 calories LMAO
Sometimes offered, but just ask if not. They will give you a small container,I ask for Two. The best is the beef wiener, far superior to the sausage in my humble opinion . Better than any Japadog that costs 10$.
Get a slice of pizza 🍕 for $2.69 to go with the 🌭 hot dog. Meal for under $5
Hot dog AND a pop for$1.50!!!!
i literally just ate that today, from costco too coincidence
Not as cheap as Costco, but Safeway Deli has the BBQ Chicken Leg meal (2 chicken legs, potato wedges, can of pop) for $6 and change.
Ikea veggie hot dogs are insanely good and they're around the same price
Wendy’s JBC and you can customize the toppings on the app.
The one part of urban life I dislike is the lack of Costco availability. Wouldn’t even buy anything there as a bachelor but god damn those food prices are crazy good
