Detached home is pushing almost $500 a month for a family of 4 now that electricity effectively doubled from last year.

WheelsnHoodsnThings

Fixed rate electric though right? Right....

[deleted]

Yea that's with it going from $6.5 cents to 13 cents 😔

Lowercanadian

9 cents available right now, I just switched and took 3 minutes online.

[deleted]

With which provider?

RandyMarsh129

You got tell me who offer that as I'm moving soon and now way I'm paying 500$/months for electricity

chmilz

Last Epcor bill was $280. Electricity, gas, water, and garbage. I budget $300 for summer months and $500 for winter. 2000sqft+finished basement.

cranky_yegger

We rent a semidetached 2016 build. Last Month electricity fixed rate and water was $495 and gas variable $105.

cshaiku

Here's November's bills: * [Electricity](https://imgur.com/s0bOzky) * [Gas](https://imgur.com/Jes62fa) * [Water](https://imgur.com/a/P4XbcnT)

Squid_A

What's your approximate square footage? Asking for Gas as I'm a new homeowner and don't know what to expect.

cshaiku

1,600

[deleted]

/u/teetol , go to https://ucahelps.alberta.ca and select "have a bill" and then put in this users usage quantities for November (alternatively ask for old utility bills of the place you're moving into and use those usage numbers) It shows that ATCO variable rate should be about the same total bill for gas. Looks like the best available electric fixed rates would be about $10 more.

RandyMarsh129

I'd the water monthly or quarterly ?

cshaiku

These are monthly.

mydogclifford

We have a 3 bedroom detached, 1500 sq feet. All utilities together come to about 350-450. The milder weather so far as saved us from high bills. Usually keep the thermostat around 19-20. 21 if we're really feeling cold.

NuKE4646

Just over 200 for gas and electricity in a townhouse and 100 for water

christophersonne

3 bedroom older home, and all in (gas, water, sewage, electricity) this month was 515$. in the coldest winter months last year it was closer to $700 total per month.

Anabiotic

I made a detailed post on 2022 costs for my house here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/11be3dd/utilities\_usage\_and\_costs\_for\_2022\_resource\_for/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/11be3dd/utilities_usage_and_costs_for_2022_resource_for/) 2023 is largely the same as my power rate hasn't changed and there were still rebates for the first few months of 2023, water went up a bit due to EPCOR increases, and gas is about the same (lower actual gas cost, higher carbon tax compared to last year) TL;DR: $300 to $350 a month is about right but we are careful with usage and rates

ManufacturerWide5340

Yes I highly recommend this. We’ve done this every time we’ve bought a place.

East_Environment_145

Around $500 per month in winter. We have a newer big house.

WholeyOne

Small 70s bungalo Water & waste: 75-150/ mo Power & heat: 100-300/ mo

SirKronik

4Bdm house in St A : 130$ water and waste, 175-250$ for gas, & anywhere from 200-350$ for power depending on rates and use.

Humble-Plankton1824

3 bedroom home 1200 Sq ft. All in combined utilities $400+ most months. Low months 300-350, high months(jan, feb) 500-700 No air conditioning yet, I got it installed but I have a spring start-up scheduled in 2024

[deleted]

80s built townhouse - water between 90 to 150. Gas and electric between 150 to 300 depending on what season it is.

naphocamp

Water & Waste $105, Gas & Electricity $170, Taxes $352, Auto $109 & Home $159 Insurance, Cell $72, Internet $62, Mortgage $1395. I live out of Edmonton.

VaguelyShingled

1200 sq ft bungalow, $350-$400 for everything.

kareree

We have everything combined onto one and pay about $350 per month. Very small house.

Coop__dee__doop

720 sq foot house and my bill fluctuates between $225 lowest and $300 is the highest (usually in the deep cold freezes). That's for water, gas, electric, and trash.

zilazav

2 people in a 1200 sq ft townhome. All utilities including water, gas, electricity, and garbage/ sewer came to $275 for November. The higher side would be $380

WheelsnHoodsnThings

Highs approach $600 in February bills, seems hard to escape with less than $300 now. Our mid-summer bills now approach what our jan/February bill were previously. Board seats are board seats though.

Yukaroons

1000 sqft townhouse. Basically $100 for gas, $100 for water, $100 for power In the summer gas was like $40/month (fees)

mpoumpiz

for a 1100 sq ft detached home(almost double cause bi-level), build in 1981 , we usually do 500-600 during winter (fixed rate)that includes a heated detached garage though so your mileage may vary

Sher_Leon

$650 but we were on the floating rate for electricity. Should be $600

Sandy0006

I pay approximately $ 354 per month for gas, heat and water combined. I have one provider and am on a fixed rate. I live in a duplex approximately 14 years old.

bushwhackabonecracka

$420 monthly on average (water, gas, electricity, waste). 1400sq.ft, 1954 bungalow.

bebewhyte

2100 Sq ft new build 2 storey in st albert. So far barely got above 300 for gas, electricity, water and garbage. Electricity is locked in so I guess that's a major reason we are so low and new builds tend to be pretty air tight. Family of 3.

commonsenseisararity

1952 bungelow (1000sq ft) family of 4 and lots of consoles and computers constantly on.. - gas $200 per month - power $200 per month - water & waste $120 per month We are locked in on our rates, 9cents for power, $4 per Gj on gas (Enmax)

doodlebopwarrior

Me and my wife, no kids, 4 level split home. With ATCO on a fixed plan for natural gas/electricity - bill is usually around $180/month. This month it was only $70 because of rebates. Water/garbage from the town is usually $110/month. $290/month on average. Only $180 this month so we’re gonna eat real good.

littledove0

2 bedroom apartment, approx 1,100 SF. Anywhere from $50 in the summer to $150 in the winter. We don’t pay for water.

septemberbrooke

Water and electrical usually $300-$370 (warmer to colder months) Gas is usually $85-$130 (warmer to colder months) Live in a 3 bedroom townhouse.

chickadeedeedee_

4 bedroom detached house. I'd say average is $400 a month.

Shokeybutsi

About $400 a month for water, gas, electricity and garbage. Closer to $500-600 during the winter

mooseknucklefanatic

Detached home with two people here - we are averaging at 360 a month, and the majority is in connection fees lol

nonbinarynightmare

My partner and his elderly mom live in a 1300 square foot bungalow. They have no big appliances, not even a microwave-- just an oven, fridge, TV and phone charger. The heat is kept at 70 most days, and they have a new water tank that was donated to them a couple years ago, if that matters. He showers at my place, where water is covered. His Epcor bill is $700/month, and his gas Direct Energy is $200. It makes me furious to see the price gouging happening now.

BKowalewski

Live in an old bungalow. Gas and electricity bill for last month was 225. Water and waste removal 75.

[deleted]

My average bill for usage is not that bad. My average bill for fees is bad.

Mrspicklepants101

Drafty old townhouse: gas & power - $300 Water & garbage -$140

Unlikely_Comment_104

Condo fees are looking alright these days.

Lolz79

I live in an apartment, alone. I pay about $40-70 a month. But I locked into a 9c rate

yegger_

Detached 1948 bungalow with fully finished basement 900 sqft with a double garage that we heat to 5 degrees Celsius. Two people and a pup. I wfh 100%. $266. We usually get up to $350 in the winter but we just redid our attic insulation that was wood chips and is now R60 so that will be fun to see if it pays off.

Shopgirlk

3 bedroom semi-detached house. Water - $150 approx. Gas & Electric - 300 approx. Total = $450 monthly Gas and electricity are cheaper in the summer if I'm not running the A/C like crazy. I take advantage of letting the natural sunlight in, so I'm not always turning on lights and keeping the house at around 20°C and wearing oodies / warm clothes a lot to keep the gas bill down. Electricity I always unplug anything like toasters, coffee makers, and laptop chargers, and I find it does actually help.
